Different Types of Elves, I

I sort of split this answer up, as I had multiple people ask about it, and it’s a really long answer. In this post I’ll explain what the different groups of elves are, and how they came to be. See this post for an explanation of the characteristics of and differences between the various groups.

There are various different kinds of elves. Many of the groups do have cultural differences, but some are separated only by history, while others have been fundamentally different from the beginning.

When the elves first woke up they were already separated into three different tribes: the Vanyar, the Noldor, and the Teleri. As all three groups lived together, there weren’t many differences between them for some time.

When the Valar discovered the elves in Middle Earth and invited them to come live in Valinor, the First Sundering of the Elves occurred. While most of the elves agreed to travel to Valinor, some of them refused (either for love of Middle Earth or distrust of the Valar.) These elves became known as the Avari (the “unwilling”.) We don’t meet any of the Avari in Tolkien’s writing, but it’s said that they wandered Middle Earth, and were the first to come into contact with Men when they later awoke.

The rest of the elves, known as the Eldar (“people of the stars”), travelled west towards the coast, and Valinor. However when they reached the western border of the Greenwood (now Mirkwood), and saw the Misty Mountains, some of the Teleri elves refused to go any further. This was the Second Sundering of the Elves. The elves that remained in the Greenwood were known as the Nandor (“the valley people”.)

Eventually the rest of the Eldar reached the coast, and the Valar began preparing a way to transport the elves across the sea to Valinor. While they were waiting the elves settled and began exploring Beleriand (the western region of Middle Earth in the First Age.) The leader of the Teleri, Thingol (then called Elwe) was wandering one day when he came upon Melian, one of the Maiar. When their gazes locked the two froze (and stayed that way for years and years and years.) When the Valar finally found a way to transport the elves to Valinor, some of the Teleri (lead by Cirdan) decided to remain behind, since their Thingol, their leader, hadn’t reappeared. The Teleri that stayed in Beleriand became known as the Sindar (“grey-elves”). This was the Third Sundering of the Elves.

Later during the First Age some of the Nandor travelled to Beleriand, and were then called the Laiquendi (“green-elves”). Most of the remaining Nandor mixed with Avari and became known as Silvan elves (wood elves).
