I just remembered how back in 4th grade, like seven years ago, me and my friends were all obsessed with warrior cats and I always used to say, that if I was a clan cat, I'd wanna be a healer because I wouldn't want to fight battles and my friends always asked me wether I wouldn't miss to not have a mate and kits and I never cared about that.

Why I’m not a pro-shipper.

I often crosspost my shorter Tumblr posts to r/theowlhouse and my latest (involving Lilith and Steve) was no exception. With almost every post I make involving Lilith Clawthorne, I also add a disclaimer something along the lines of this.

“THIS IS NOT A SHIP POST. THIS IS AN ANTI-SHIP POST. LILITH CLAWTHORNE IS AROMANTIC AND WE DO NOT INVALIDATE CHARACTERS’ CANON SEXUALITIES ON THIS BLOG.”

Now the person pictured in the screenshots above (usernames obviously blurred) disagreed with that take and wanted me to “chill out” because they didn’t think it was wrong to ship outside of the canon sexual/romantic orientation- aka, the concept known as pro-shipping.

Now I didn’t start an internet argument. I did my absolute best to keep my tone respectful and civil. However, I just want this to be clear.

Pro-shipping, when used in this way, is absolutely disrespectful, both to the character and the communities they represent. Full stop.

Let me reiterate. Invalidating a character’s sexuality invalidates the community they represent, especially when it’s such an underrepresented community as the aro/ace spectrums. This, I refuse to argue with people. And I’m putting this out there so no one gets the wrong idea about me. Feel free to block me if you disagree.

But Lyn, what about straight characters who people ship as LGBTQ+?! Why is that ok?!

It’s not. If a character explicitly states that they’re a heterosexual, definitively and not as comic relief, then we should hold our community to the exact same standards.

However, there’s a difference between being straight and being straight passing. The thing about heterosexuality is that it’s assumed to be the norm, so every character in existence is automatically assumed to be straight until further notice. However, we have no idea if that character may actually be bisexual. Or pansexual. Or asexual. Just because we assume a character is heterosexual, doesn’t mean they are, and vice versa for the LGBTQ+. TL;DR: it’s ok to HC whatever sexual orientation you want for a character until they tell you otherwise. Then, respect it.

But Lyn! Why would you go after pro-shippers like this?! Pro-shipping is just allowing everyone to ship what they want, how can it be bad?!

It isn’t until it is. Are you against incestuous shipping? Or pedophilic shipping? Congratulations, you’re not a pro-shipper.

Pro-shipping is a wide spectrum and can be an amazing thing within a fandom. However, there are hard limits drawn on what we think is ok as people, not as shippers, and I think it’s important that we as a fandom draw those lines. Once it becomes toxic, disrespectful, borderline NSFL (looking at you, Lilith x Hooty shippers)…it’s no longer a good thing.

IN SHORT, I refuse to ignore Lilith’s canon sexuality and romantic identity just because I think ‘Lilith x (blank)’ would be a cute ship. I respect the asexual community and I respect that there are boundaries we have to draw in order to keep fandoms from becoming toxic. If you don’t…well, maybe read this post one more time.

hate how “platonic” is a term that people laugh at

like it’s typically used in a setting to contrast romance vs what’s “lesser” or “just” something else

like if i say i love someone very much platonically, most would take it as a denial of romantic attraction as opposed to. yknow. me just expressing the way i love somebody that has Zero association with romance.

idk man, i don’t need people to laugh at me when i say i love how i connect with someone platonically because apparently we only say that when we’re secretly romantically attracted to them and just totally denying it.

i want to say “aww this is so platonic, i love it!” the same way people say “aww this is so romantic, i love it!” but y’all know i’ll be laughed at lmao

can they just. actually recognize platonic love and platonic attraction please. it’s not a step down or a step up from anything and it is certainly not solely an absence of romantic (or sexual) feelings.

platonic is beautiful. platonic is lovely. and i will celebrate it however i please.
