After being late for DMB's birthday, I had to make sure I posted on time for these guys!! I would've made a more detailed piece but it's been crazy busy today for me, agh!! A doodle will have to do for now. Also, I have straight up never drawn Nightmare before to my recollection, so learning how to draw him was a pretty wild experience. Anyway, happy bday to the goobers!

Hi! Really odd question but I just adore your art style and how it closely resembles the Kirby anime while still standing out as unique to you- it's so clean and polished! Could I ask what your general process is when it comes to the digital art you post on this blog? Just kinda the basics-

Hello! I always love talking about art, I don't mind at all! Took me over a week to answer though, so thanks for being patient with me hahah

For the drawings I make for this blog, I use the program Autodesk Sketchbook on my samsung tablet. It's a bit of a hassle since it's a simple and free app with very limited options, but it's the one that suits me the most with the brushes it offers.

So first off I sketch the character(s) and foreground with the 6B pencil brush.

Then I do the line art with the technical pencil in a dark colour, either dark blue or dark purple, I very rarely use a solid black on my line art.

For the line art on the background, I mostly just wing it. I know I should be doing proper perspective drawing, but where's the fun in that? XD I just have some references open on the side, and make stuff up

I try to keep the lines as thin as possible. I have a bit of a shaky hand, so I turn on brush stabiliser when doing the outlines. But I keep the sensitivity waaay down, since I don't feel like I have a lot of control, it often over-corrects my lines so I use it as little as possible, and turn it off completely for detail work

I have every part divided into layers (each shade of grey is its own layer) so I can lock the transparency and blend colours without worrying about smudging the parts I've already done.

The anime has such interesting colours, very bold colour combinations, and I like that a lot. I think one of the reasons I manage to make my drawings look close is because I have a similar style of colouring, using a cooler, darker version of the base colour for shading, and a warmer, lighter version for highlights.

I will then colour the background roughly with the fountain pen, both light and dark, then blend it all together with the smudge pen.

When I do the shading on the characters, I use the fountain pen. It has a very crisp edge, so it gives the shading a very clean look. The shading on the characters in the anime is a bit more blurred, so when I've wanted to make it look more like the anime, I use the cashmere eraser on the visible edges. I've only done that a couple of times though, crisp edges are more my taste.

I absolutely love backgrounds that look "painted" with a lot of texture, so I use texture brushes to add detail to the background. These are the ones I use on a regular basis:

One of the last things I do on the art program is add extra lighting for a little bit of a glow effect. Here I just play around with layer blending modes, I switch between overlay, glow, soft light, and screen, and dab on some parts where the light would hit, and blend those. I prefer a subtle glow, so I turn the opacity down to around 7-20%. I also have a layer above all the others with a solid colour (pink on this drawing), with the blending mode set to overlay, and opacity below 10%. I often do this to just tie all the colours together a bit

I like to add is a very subtle rimlight. I use the technical pencil and draw thin lines next to the line art (where there's no shading). I set the layer to screen, and use whatever colour is underneath, that way it won't be too noticable, just giving the drawing a little more pop

My last (and favourite) little touch I like to add is a tiny bit of chromatic abberration, done in Photoshop. Not enough to be easily noticable (you really have to zoom in like I've done on the picture above to even see it properly), but just enough to give the drawing some extra flair. I'm obsessed with the VHS/CRT screen look, so if I go all out I add scan lines and some other extra editing as well. I also blur the background, and the very corners of the foreground.

The moment I saw this post, I immediately knew I had to get it. It just arrived a couple days ago and I love it so much!! Very beautiful and eye-catching. Feels very sturdy and durable too! If you’re thinking about getting it, definitely go for it.

This is actually my very first redraw ever, of something I did… about four years ago now? It’s really cool to see how much I’ve improved.

These borbs mean so much to me and I’ve been getting back into Kirby lately so I thought it would be fun to draw them again. I think this is the most amount of effort I’ve ever put into a piece lol, and the quality (at least compared to my other stuff) definitely reflects it.

I also tried to throw in some poetry, but I’ve literally never written anything like it before and I stink at coming up with elegant wording so… yeah. But hope it reflects at least a little bit of what was going through my mind as I worked on this piece haha.

I feel obligated to say YES. Just.. yes. Headcanon accepted.

I headcanon that during Star Allies, Meta Knight was called 'borb' a whole bunch. Like, literally a whole bunch. It was basically a meme.

Practically all the dream friends called him 'borb' because they thought it was funny. Dedede was the one that initiated it, and everyone else just kinda followed suit as they made it a trending joke during the adventure. Some of them had a blast doing it.

Meta Knight doesn't like being called borb, really. He supposes he did maybe find it amusing the first few times, but it got repetitive and annoying real quick. He gave no reaction a lot of the time when people called him borb, but there was the occasion he'd snap and be like "Stop. I am no borb." to make it crystal clear that he did not enjoy it.

After Star Allies, everyone eventually stopped calling him borb. Well, except for one person. Marx still does it even to this day. Because of course he would. No surprise it's that clown still calling him that.

Meta Knight already considered Marx to be a wretched pain in the rear long before that, though. It's par for the course, really.

Although what makes this situation funnier is that Dark Meta Knight was often being called 'edgy borb' at around the same time Meta was constantly called borb. DMK was more vehement about opposing his nickname by comparison. Meta Knight however thought it was hilarious and delightful that his counterpart was given that nickname.

Meta Knight and Galaxia: An Observation (and maybe a theory)

Earlier today, I was watching a playthrough of Kirby’s Return to Dreamland, and as the group was fighting Magolor Soul EX, I noticed something peculiar: 

In his EX form, he uses Galaxia. Huh! I never knew about that! It’s gotten my theory brain going a little, I’ll admit. How did he get that? Why is there more than one of it to begin with?

If the Master Crown can summon Galaxia, is there some kind of connection between the two relics?

Well. Let’s see.

Before the games officially started using the name “Galaxia” (a name that first appeared in the Kirby anime) for the legendary blade, the fan community had a different name for it: the Master Sword. What looks like a tongue-in-cheek reference to Legend of Zelda at first glance actually has some canon basis - in Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, Meta Knight entrusts his sacred sword to Kirby for the final battle. The copy ability Kirby receives thereupon is simply called the “Master ability”; so the sword he got it from must consequently be called the Master Sword, right?

(Granted, the sword’s design has changed quite a bit since then, but it’s presumably still the same weapon that is known as Galaxia nowadays. The in-game spritework also has that golden energy dance around the blade in ways that strongly resemble Galaxia’s familiar prongs.)

So if Galaxia is the Master Sword, and the relic known as the Master Crown can summon alternate versions of it… Perhaps these two artifacts aren’t so dissimilar. 👀 I wonder if a similar power to Crowned Magolor could be unleashed through it, if Meta Knight wanted to. Why doesn’t he, then?

I’ve got a few thoughts about that, as well.

As you know, the Master Crown had a guardian, one who was protecting it fiercely without ever tapping into its true power - the dragon Landia.

Perhaps Meta Knight’s role is a similar one. Not just a wielder of the Master Sword Galaxia, but its guardian. Someone who can be trusted with such immense power. He does share one more similarity with Landia, after all…

I’ve compared Meta Knight’s and Dragon Fire Kirby’s wings in the past, delighted by the similarities, and pointed out that Meta Knight’s wings seem a lot more draconic than bat-like to me, what with the talons and all… So perhaps, in a roundabout way, he too could be likened to a dragon protecting its hoard, just like Landia.

Perhaps relic guardians (if indeed there is an official role like that) were selected specifically for their draconic qualities - after all, in many cultures, dragons are thought of as wise and long-lived protectors. Who better to entrust a relic with god-like powers to for safekeeping?

There’s also the fact that Meta Knight seems so utterly unsurprised by anything happening in the RtD finale, outside of perhaps Magolor’s betrayal itself - where everyone else is acting surprised and confused, he just takes it all in stride, like he knows what’s going on and what to do about it. Like none of this is new to him. He even uses Galaxia to deflect some of Crowned!Magolor’s attacks - how did he know that he’d be able to do that, unless he was a lot more familiar with this type of relic than he lets on?

I just have a lot of thoughts about Meta Knight’s role in the Kirby series. I doubt HAL will ever actually confirm anything, because being “a mysterious Knight” is kind of just his Thing now, but if you look into things just a little bit, there are a lot of vague implications that hang around him.

Maybe none of this means anything, and it’s all just conjecture. But it’s fun to think about, in any case. It could make for some interesting headcanons, if nothing else.

(There’s also the fact that Void Termina summons the Master Crown for one of its attacks, so what does that mean for the Master Sword? And Meta Knight’s own implied relationship with Void? The rabbit hole just keeps going and going!)
