Via @bipocwhoskate from Jan 2019 • Since we started this page back in January, we’ve received numerous messages from folx who shared their experience in our community. A theme we’ve noticed is that a lot of people are afraid to speak up because they think or they’ve been told that it will be considered drama. We’re here to remind the community that speaking up about racism, inequality, queer issues, or any other issue where someone is being emotionally or physically harmed should not be be brushed off as drama. Yes, every story and local community has nuances, but we should try our best to listen and learn in order to be the best community we can be for the greatest number of people. We’ve also received messages from high level sponsored skaters sharing that they are afraid their sponsors will see them speaking up as being negative and revoke their sponsorships. The act of sharing your story and asking your community to do better is a radical one that should not be punished. We should uplift and support the folx who do speak up because they seek to make our community a more positive and safe space. If you can’t or won’t speak up for other reasons, it’s ok. If you’re reading this and you need support, reach out, we are here for you. If this is not something you’ll ever personally experience because of your race, gender, sexuality, etc. ask yourself how you can do better for marginalized skaters in our community. A message from Taco Bruiseday and Ratchet-Face, owners and founders of Bout Betties: We stand with those peacefully protesting the death of George Floyd and all the countless others who have been needlessly killed just for being black and out in the world. As owners of Bout Betties who are both Black and Indigenous and being part of the BIPOC community of skaters, now felt like the time to help bring awareness to the Black Lives Matter movement in a way that isn't meant to stir up the derby community. We try to be a positive and happy place on the internet most days. But when something affects our black skaters in a real and harmful way, the conversation needs to be opened to help everyone understand that things are (still) not ok. Please reach out to any black skaters, refs, photographers, NSOs, etc to see if they're ok. This is a situation that is both physically and emotionally exhausting to have to see happen over and over on the news and social media feeds. Outright racism and low-key racism affect Black skaters, their friends, family and teammates daily, this isn't anything new. All we can ask is please be respectful to your Black skaters, even more than usual. They're hurting and need to feel that their skate crews & leagues are there for them, even if that means just check in with them. Be an ally. The derby and skating community can be amazing, let's show them the support is there. With this time off, look inward at your leagues to make sure everyone in leadership positions and teammates are Allies and aren't detrimental to growing the diversity on the teams. We want EVERYONE to be there ready to return to derby once the dust settles. We're donating our May donation to @bipocwhoskate, who will be donating it to the Navajo Nation COVID-19 fund @navajohopicovid19relief. This means a lot to us both, going towards helping our people. The full May Bout Betties pack was a "choose your own adventure". Our subscribers got to choose exactly what they wanted from our exclusive bottoms designs. We loved seeing people picking our Lead Siren mermaid shorts, or the Halloween leggings (gonna be ready early this year!), or most exciting was all the skater skirts that we sent out! Do to Covid circumstances we have to pivot and adapt, but this solution was a really fun one! Also included were two bottles of hand sanitizer that say "Not today Rona! I just want to play derby"! Our sentiments exactly... but it's the least we can do to help provide people with hand sanitizer. Lastly Ratchet drew a clear sticker of a sad little helmet waiting for derby to start up again.
