Six sketch sunday
Thanks so much for tagging me @thewholelemon
I actually have something pretty exciting to share if i do say so myself!
In november 2022 i did a master study of romeo and juliet by frank bernard dicksee. I was very happy with it. But over time I’ve become less and less happy with it, specifically how baz looks :((
This is due to the fact that i traced A LOT in late 2022 (I was 15 ok, I’m sure we’ve all had one of those phases😭) I traced the whole painting, but baz was hard bc the original painting featured a woman, and her whole figure was covered by a white loose dress. 2022 me did their best interpreting the shapes and forming a new body for baz, but honestly they didn’t do it very well. Ive hated Baz’s face and body for a while now, but still loved simon and the painting in general. Which is why I came to the conclusion that for me to be at peace and happy with it again, I have to remaster it!
And again I’ve had this on my mind for a while now, mulling it over, because it’s quite a big project. But 7 days ago i finalized my decision and started looking at references and whatnot. It took me so long to find references bc I was confused of the angle of Juliet’s head in the original painting (so I’ve changed the angle whoops) and i needed to make sense of it all. Before i knew it i had spent 5 hours (according to procreates tracker) drawing, and literally nothing had changed.. but then i spent like 2 hours more and THAT did it. It was like digging a whole in the ground searching for water. You dig a little and nothing happens, and when you finally dig deep enough the water reveals itself like a goldmine.
Anyways, i haven’t gotten around to do any recoloring yet, so ill show you the sketch (ahem, traced) of my 2022 version versus what I have now
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The one on the left is the 2022 version. The one on the right is the current sketch.
I’m trying to incorporate a lot more body language from baz this time around. I think the old sketch of baz was very rigid. His torso is very short 💀 my biggest issue was his face though. It was far too feminine. The bone structure wasn’t exactly giving baz, in fact the whole face didn’t look like baz to me. The expression also bothered me, it was too superficial. Like it’s exactly the predictable expression you expect him to have. I tried to spice it up in the new version by making him appear a bit more anguished. It’s romeo and juliet after all.
Im currently looking at references to what clothes he should be wearing (don’t worry, i wont cover up his sleeves. Even if it’s more time period accurate) so if y’all have any inspo or suggestions, feel free to share them with me!
While baz is the inly thing getting completely redone, I’m also touching up some other thins. Just giving it a more refined, finished look overall. The plants in the original were really messily done, so i’m gonna work a lot on those. 2022 me also slacked on the curtains, so I’m repainting those to match the original frank bernard painting.
Once I’m done with it all i think i might sell some prints. Ive gotten requests to sell prints of this one before, but never really got around to do more than research. If i do make prints, I’m a bit worried they’ll all go to waste bc they’ll have to be shipped from denmark, and shipping in expensive :(( (I’ve tried to set up middlemen and it didn’t work for me. Red bubble wont even allow me to add a credit card😬) but if y’all are still interested in prints, do let me know! Ill definitely put in more of an effort to make it happen if i know it wont be in vain :))
Thats all from me for today :3 see ya next time

“It’s a memory book,” he says. “They used to give them out at Watford before the Mage took over. At your leavers ball. It’s got class pictures from every year and little stories…” He holds the book open to a page full of photos. It makes me wish I had something like it—I don’t have any pictures of myself or my friends.
Or, fulfilling Simon’s wish (and mine tbh).

I hurt myself thinking of Simon and Baz adopting a kid. Simon’s nervous, maybe it’s sort of spur of the moment. They’ve been planning for awhile (Baz has sooo many books; he’s reading them with Penny whereas Simon likes to sits with Daphne and Lady Ruth to hear their firsthand experience) but when the call comes you’re never prepared. Penny’s got a checklist and she’s calling out items while Simon packs the car. Meanwhile Baz is updating the group chat and yelling, “You don’t need seven sandwiches, Simon! It’s only a thirty minute car ride!” And Simon and Penny echo back, “It’s on the list, Baz!” But they eventually manage to get packed and on the road, waving back at Penny who’s going to the market to pick up essentials on their other checklist.
Simon drives to where they’re meant to pick up their child, steady hands under pressure and all that, and Baz drums his fingers on his thigh until Simon reaches over and threads their hands together. “It’s going to be fine,” he says, and Baz wants to argue that Simon looks like he’s five seconds from shitting his pants. Baz squeezes Simon’s hand instead.
They do eventually make the handover, sign the paperwork, and then it’s the two of them, packing their child into the car seat (Simon wrangles while Baz calls out instructions). “Gentle, gentle!” Baz reminds Simon and Simon wants to bang a fist against his own head in frustration but then he hears that word again. Gentle. And he gives that to himself as well.
It’s a quiet ride home. “Calm before the storm,” Baz jokes, his eyes ever on the precious bundle strapped in behind him, and Simon swallows his lips in a strained smile.
“I’ll take first watch,” Simon says, after they’ve managed food, diapers, and a strangely quiet child given all the change and emotional upheaval circling around them.
There’s something twitchy about Simon’s offer but Baz chalks it up to new fatherhood jitters. He should argue; maybe he should stay up first given his experience babysitting his siblings, but he’s exhausted and sticky. Besides, these days Simon babysits as often as Baz. He trusts Simon, and displaying that trust goes a long way toward Simon feeling it for himself. So he kisses their child on the forehead, then Simon, then his child again, then, “Stop, stop,” Simon laughs, swatting away Baz’s insistent lips, “we’ll be fine. I’ll call you on the monitor if we need anything.”
“Okay,” Baz frowns, and then he subjects his family to another round of kisses, just in case.
It’s three in the morning when Baz hears it: a stifled sob over the monitor, distinctly adult in nature.
Simon.
Baz walks softly to the nursery. He finds Simon in the rocking chair, their child pressed to his bare chest. Tears stream down Simon’s face.
“Love, what’s—”
“I just got her,” Simon says. “Less than twelve hours ago. I just got her.”
Baz reaches out his arms, a move Simon misinterprets. He holds the baby tighter to his chest.
“No, no. Don’t you see? I just got her. And I can’t,” Simon hiccups, “I can’t imagine giving her up.” He looks up at Baz. “I love her. I just got her and I love her and she’s mine and I can’t, I can’t…”
This time, when Baz stretches out his arms Simon moves to give up the baby but Baz clicks his tongue and pulls them both in his arms. “It’s okay, little puff,” he says, kissing Simon’s cheek before the baby’s. “I’ve got you, now.”

MOCKUP COMPLETE???? (Mostly).
Last time, I was in a tizzy because the pattern for the fingers didn't seem to fit the mockup, but it did fit the wing pattern, and the mockup fit the wing pattern, so...????
I still don't know what that's about, but I persisted! The next thing I did was pin down the pattern and trace it with a yellow Frixion pen so that the line would hopefully be visible, but not obvious if it didn't fully go away. Apparently, I didn't take pics of this step. Oops.
Then I pinned along the traced lines to hold the fabric together but also because the lines were a little too hard to see (should've used the pink marker!). See below my pinned nonsense.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, I just had to sew along the lines! These are probably some of the best seams I've ever sewn, tbh. I t was hard to see the traced line sometimes, but I took it slow and checked that I was still on track pretty often and it paid off!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did have a brief period where I couldn't stop thinking about the apple danish sitting behind me. I had fallen into the trap of promising myself I could have it as a reward when I finished sewing all the finger channels, but that just made me obsess over it and start to rush. I could actually feel the anxiety building up as it went on and I realized how much sewing I still had to do.
I've been attributing this kind of behavior to ADHD, but maybe that's just because I only noticed the pattern after I was diagnosed with ADHD. Maybe someone here can tell me if it's an ADHD thing. Anyway, my brain does NOT work that way. Reward must come before or during activity, not after, if I want the work to be done well. So I took a bite of the danish after I finished each line, and that worked out a lot better.
And with that, I have a wing!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had to hold the un-sleeved wing because adding this fabric added enough weight to make them very crooked. The wings are held in closed position via magnets, and this fabric is so heavy that the wing doesn't stay closed! It opens when I lean over!
This means I'm probably going to have to scrap my original idea for the fabric, which was going to be something suede-like for the "lambs ear" touch on the inside and something a little more leather-like for the outside. I'll need something heckin light for these magnets to hold, and that's probably the only downside to this setup so far.
I didn't put wire in the finger channels because I don't have any yet, and I want to figure out what to do about the spike on top because I want it to be black in the final product, like Simon's. But for all intents and purposes, the mockup is done and I am ready to buy fabric and start on the real deal!

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

First order of business: I'd like to thank @thewholelemon's Larger Lemon for this brand new banner! You better believe I'm going to use it for everything.
Now, for a small wing update. Last time, I sewed up the wing sleeve. The next instructions were to cut up the wing pattern along these dashed lines to get the shapes for the fingers. I didn't want to cut up the pattern because I want to use it again and don't want to have to go through the whole pattern-assembly process over and over again.
Instead, I put sheets of paper over the parts I needed, taped them together, and traced to get this monster-looking piece.
Tumblr media
I placed the cut out finger patterns on top of my wing sleeve and...
Tumblr media
Huh? It doesn't quite match up....
I put my sleeve over the pattern (left) and the wing frame over that (right), and that all seems to match up fine. So... wtf happened to the fingers?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I forgot a pic, but the fingers do match the pattern. But if the sleeve matches the pattern and the fingers match the pattern... why don't the fingers match the sleeve?
I'm going to trust the process, I guess? I should be able to use the finger pattern as a guide to get the right shapes onto the sleeve, so I think it'll be fine, but I am incredibly confused.
That's all for now!
