First order of business: I'd like to thank @thewholelemon's Larger Lemon for this brand new banner! You better believe I'm going to use it for everything.
Now, for a small wing update. Last time, I sewed up the wing sleeve. The next instructions were to cut up the wing pattern along these dashed lines to get the shapes for the fingers. I didn't want to cut up the pattern because I want to use it again and don't want to have to go through the whole pattern-assembly process over and over again.
Instead, I put sheets of paper over the parts I needed, taped them together, and traced to get this monster-looking piece.
Tumblr media
I placed the cut out finger patterns on top of my wing sleeve and...
Tumblr media
Huh? It doesn't quite match up....
I put my sleeve over the pattern (left) and the wing frame over that (right), and that all seems to match up fine. So... wtf happened to the fingers?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I forgot a pic, but the fingers do match the pattern. But if the sleeve matches the pattern and the fingers match the pattern... why don't the fingers match the sleeve?
I'm going to trust the process, I guess? I should be able to use the finger pattern as a guide to get the right shapes onto the sleeve, so I think it'll be fine, but I am incredibly confused.
That's all for now!

I got to see my work on the big screen yesterday. It was the very first screening of the short film "Angelman", directed by Sacha Picard, for which I made some props (including the yellow robot on the poster!)
Tumblr media
It was definitely an incredible experience to watch it in a cinema for the first time.

The final look at the Chicago Steampunk Expo- wings, staff, and corset. Alas, the convention center was generally too bright to see the staff glowing. Still cool though.

thinking abt how azi was truly crowley's sunlight through the millenniums. like, here's this demon who didn't mean to fall, who just asked questions and deep down he was still so good. and he is alone, he's the literally the emboidement of the first sin, and NOT by his own choosing. he's so alone and afraid and just wants a real conversation w someone, even if its an angel who'll most likely hate him. and here's the guardian of eden, who gave away his sword, that GOD gave to him, without asking a single question, to help the humans under his charge and he's kind to crowley and crowley is utterly fascinated. zira is basically the first protector, not only to adam and eve BUT CROWLEY TOO. he protects crowley from the first rain bc he's so fundamentally good and kind and crowley can't help seeking him out over the years. when they meet in rome, c is obviously far more withdrawn and angry bc of the things he's seen and was forced to do and there's az again, so happy to see him and even inviting him to dinner. everytime they met, even when crowley was saving azira, he also saved crowley by the simple act of being his friend.

the WINGS THE WINGS THE WINGS tell me more about. the wings
👏 👏 OKAY SO THE WINGS
I’m still hashing out the finer details on this AU and I’d love to write something for it one of these days but the long and short of it goes like this:
Tumblr media
The people of Xerxies are descendants of an ancient minor deity/eldritch being, and the people of Xerxies through bloodline inherit a pair of wings. The wings exist in a pocket-dimension and can be manifested or banished as their person wills.
Edward and Alphonse, being half-Xerxien, were born with a set of Xerxian wings. It takes time to learn how to manifest/banish the wings in and out of the pocket-dimension, so they just sort of let the wings do whatever they wanted for most of their early childhood. Hohenheim kept his wings to himself while the two of them were growing up because the memories of his people were too much to bear. Once he left, Edward and Alphonse started keeping their wings to themselves more often too.
Tumblr media
Since Edward and Alphonse are only half-Xerxien, their wings do require the occasional maintenance (preening) and sometimes Edward struggles to control whether they appear or disappear (reservations against Hohenheim, wings responding to his emotional state/impulsiveness, etc). He’s more torn on his wings, but tolerates them because it’s something he has in common with Alphonse and Alphonse loves their wings.
Then their mother died. Then they tried to bring her back. Alphonse lost his body; Edward lost his arm and his leg. Edward refused to bring out his wings after that, no matter how many times Alphonse urged him. What did it matter, anyway? Alphonse’s wings were taken along with his body. Hohenheim was never coming back and neither was Mom.
For years, Edward lived as a grounded Icarus.
Then there was the ‘incident.’ Edward reacted without thinking, because a moment’s hesitation meant life or death, and his wings manifested before he could think. But something was wrong. He kicked off the pavement, his arm outstretched, only to come slamming back down. That was when he realized the Gate was cruel beyond coincidence.
It’d taken one of his wings—just one—to make sure he never forgets that he used to be able to fly.
Tumblr media
(This marked the first time Mustang and his team saw Edward’s wings. Edward had never so much as mentioned them before, but Mustang heard stories of the ancient civilization that flew on wings made of comet tails and stars.)
(It was supposed to be a myth. It isn’t.)
Tumblr media
— Aaaand that’s what I’ve got on this AU so far. TL;DR Edward somehow needs even more hugs

I never shared the end result of this enormous build, so here you have it: Valkyrie Gondul from God of War!
This costume was probably three month’s worth of solid work, the helmet being one of the pieces I worked on the longest. Every feather is hand-carved EVA foam with wood burned designs. The helmet is also EVA with foam clay sculptured details and carvings. The wing span is roughly 10ft and each wing is powered by its own motor allowing them to flex and collapse. The base of the wings were built based on a blueprint by Warhawk Studios (@war_hawk_studios_llc on IG), but the feathers, rigging, and adjusted motors and wiring were done by yours truly. They weigh about 30lbs.
I loved getting to wear this build! I’m really excited to continue to improve her, build her hammer, and do a real shoot. 🤘

Crafting Wings
I finally remembered today that tumblr is a blog, and that in addition to whatever fandom nonsense I reblog, I can also post bloggy things on it. Obvious, right?
I am making a set of dragon wings for an event coming up in mid-June. They are of course inspired by Simon Snow and will be red dragon wings (though the pattern I bought from them is technically for a wyvern). I'm hoping that posting progress updates here will help me stick to it and actually get it done in time. I'm breaking it down into teeny tiny easy peasy steps and only looking at the very next step to try to keep the overwhelm and executive dysfunction at bay. This is likely to lead me down a path of "If I'd thought about it earlier, I could have..." But you know what? I always end up there anyway.
So first, I spent a long long long long long (long long long...) time trying to decide how to make these wings. I really wanted articulated wings, bonus if I could move them without obviously pushing or pulling or something. But looking at how people had made that happen was overwhelming. They require so much time and skill and I am prone to procrastination and crying and quitting when I mess up. I finally settled on this DIY Mechanical Wing kit by Chimera Wings. That would give me the frame for the wings, but they also have a sewing pattern (with printed AND video instructions) to make the covers for them!
This is what the contents of the kit looked like when I got it:
Tumblr media
And this is the completed build! I almost didn't post this because I don't like the way I look, but you know what? Fuck that. I built something cool (using very simple, easy-to-follow instructions, sure) and I don't want to have to find a better fancier more flattering way to film that, so. I'm getting over it.
You can tell that I kinda struggle with the wing on my right side. I clearly need to stretch my arms out before wearing these. Truly. I tried it after I stretched and it's no big deal. Or maybe I'll add some sort of pulley after all. (HAH. Like I'll have time for that.)
Otherwise, the kit and wings are fantastic. It was so easy to put together and they feel very cool to wear. I should probably go write them a review...
I didn't actually takes pics of the next step, but I printed out the pattern on regular 8.5x11 paper and taped it together. It... was not very well done, but I'm hoping I got it close enough to not have messed up the pattern dimensions. After taping and then cutting out the completed pattern, I could move on to working with actual fabric!
I'm making a mock-up out of old sheets first because I have never once done any sewing project successfully the first time. I decided to mock-up only one wing instead of both, so this will surely be my downfall when I move onto the real deal.
The next two pictures are the front and back pieces for a single wing. I decided to cut them separately instead of at the same time by folding the fabric in half because every time I do more than one layer at a time, at least one of the layers comes out real fucked up. I blame being a lefty in a right-handed world. Scissors are of the devil.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next step was to make buttonholes that are actually strap holes. I have a little baby basic machine, and it has some limitations. I discovered one of these limitations during my buttonhole test runs. As you can see, the machine-provided "buttonhole" stitches are just... lacking. I messed with a screw that controls the length of these stitches, but for some reason it can only be used to balance out the stitch lengths, not make them overall longer or shorter. I have no control for generally change stitch length. I only have the options presented to me on my stitch chooser knob. Alas, I have less than optimal buttonholes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured above: (Left) One very sad buttonhole test. (Right) A second buttonhole test in which one side is almost respectable and the other should be ashamed to call itself a buttonhole stitch.
Finally, I gave up and balanced the stitch lengths and just went with it. When I do the real deal, I will likely go use my friend's much fancier machine. For the mock-up, this is sufficient. The next three pictures show, with increasing zoom and blurriness, the completed buttonholes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am intentionally using very bright, contrasting thread so that when I inevitably fuck up, I can hopefully see the point of fuck up more clearly so as to rectify it on my next attempt.
And that brings us up to speed! Next Step: Pin the pieces together. That's it. That's the whole step. How many days will it take to overcome executive dysfunction and do it? Only time will tell.
As long as I can remember to update regularly, future posts should be quite short.

These wings are VERY cool, but they are just too big. They fold up way further out to the side than I had originally planned. I think I can solve that easily enough by removing or shortening the longest primary feather though.

PLEASE tell us about the blaze and winter parallels 👀
it's about being the weakest sibling of 3, the disappointing one. regarded as a failure when you're barely a toddler, no matter what you do, while being mocked for your interests. it's about the deep care for others, even if they hurt you. even if you loose them. even if you end up dying for them. you can't help it, despite it all.
