Hidden under the artichokes are these balls of sunshine. No vegetable garden should ever be without marigolds. They support the ecosystem naturally and very effectively. They repel aphids, mosquitoes and evidently rabbits too. Being such a bright gold colour the bees will no doubt be drawn to them too. The colour is glorious. It is the kind of colour that brings cheer on a cloudy day reminding you that the sun still shines even if you can’t see it. A wonderful colour for the home even if it is just one bright cushion or picture on the wall. The Chapel Folly doorway framing a view of the pond beyond. This is a part of the ruined chapel that we built in the garden with stone reclaimed from a building that was taken down some years ago. It’s design to create romantic views for photographs and just enjoy while sitting out in the garden. Today it’s making more scrubs washbags for care workers and nhs staff. The local initiative to support our front line key-workers has been incredibly inspiring and moving. We have donated some fabric and Georgina has donated buttons for them to make up into scrubs, headbands and mask extenders as we are limited with what we can do ourselves. With all of our staff furloughed it is down to just us. That said converting old bedding into something useful is incredibly satisfying as it clears out the cupboards. Onward with the factory work. Hand painting fabric in new ways is definitely on the agenda. This morning we have been talking about doing more painting to not only evolve our skills but to explore different ways to achieve different effects. Whether we show you our daubs is another thing. But who knows .... This is a piece we did sometime ago using #silkscreen printing to create the gold pattern then hand painting (within the lines) using essentially a dye paste to confine the colours to the areas applied. We might be in lockdown but the vegetable garden is taking shape nicely. Peas, beans, broad beans, chard/spinach, salsify, potatoes, broccoli, leeks, welsh garlic or is that welsh onions, cardoons all flourishing in the early spring warmth. more in the greenhouse waiting to be planted in the beds. The sunshine has been glorious. Thank goodness for that. I dread to think think how much worse things could have been if the weather had been dire. Of course we think that every business including fashion businesses should have a vegetable garden. Now more than ever I don’t think that we can ever be so divorced from nature as many have been in the last century or so. It’s vital for our mental and emotional well being as well as the well being of the planet. Gardening provides Food for the body and the soul whilst offering inspiration for our creativity. This was a cape that was originally designed for #barbrastreisand whose hero status has been renewed in my eyes through her latest album Walls.
