Hiring Out A Fencing Job
Our “backfield” had an entire section of fencing that trailed up a very steep hill and limestone ledge and was probably more than 50 years old. It was rusted and attached to rotten posts and trees and was several layers of different types of fencing. The fence bordered a neighbor, and they had several trees that had blown down on the fence. We cut most of those trees up for firewood and stacked…

New Visitor To Backyard
I love that we have so much wildlife near and around us. Deer, bear, raccoons, wild rabbits, turkeys, it’s all here. This month we’ve had a very special guest playing in the back yard. It’s a fox squirrel that half black and half red/gray. He’s beautiful!! When I first saw it out my kitchen window, I panicked thinking it was a skunk. He’s eating sunflower seeds I put out for the birds. They…

Half A Hog
Fresh ground sausage On January 12th, Eddie spent the day with some friends near us and helped butcher hogs. They had three 450–500-pound hogs and it was done on of the coldest day in January. They started preparing the fire and scalding pans before daylight. There were 6-7 guys including Eddie and it took all day. It had been several years since he had helped friends or family scald and scrape…

Lovin' Lemon
Do you have a lemon tree in your home? Have you ever raised a lemon tree? I had one several years ago but had to give it up when we moved here. There was just too much to care for here and not enough room or light for one to survive here. We down-sized majorly!!! Lemon trees make beautiful potted plants with shiny dark green leaves and when they are large enough to bear fruit, the flowers smell…

Before the Calves Arrive
Our calving season was supposed to start on February 28th and some of the 42 cows in this herd started to show signs (called springing) a week prior to that date. All of this herd has had at least one calf, so they know what to expect. It’s actually two herds of 22 and 20 in fields side by side. They’re split to help keep count of who is calving and not quite there yet. This time of year, is…

Firewood for 2024-25 In Progress
Hubby started on next winters firewood supply this week. He’s trying to cut down all of the wild cherry trees that are in a field that the cattle will be in. When we have windstorms there are always limbs, if not, entire trees that come down on the property. Wild cherry are particularly hazardous to livestock. When the sap comes up in these trees it causes noxious poison in the leaves and buds.…

That Time of Year Again
In the fall of 2023, we harvested six bushels of Yukon Gold and six bushels of Kennebec potatoes. They are wonderful and big and tooooo many!!! Crates and crates of potatoes and I’ve been canning them too. The bin in the floor is full of white Kennebec potatoes. I’ve been canning and freezing them! There are twelve milk crates in the floor stacked full of the Yukon Gold. We’ll use some of both…

Update on New Bulls
They’re growing!! They will follow Eddie anywhere! We haven’t named them yet mainly because they look so much alike and all they do is eat!!! They did get introduced to one of the big bulls yesterday. The big bull was pulled from the fall herd after being in there for three months and two days. I sure hope they’re ready for breeding come June. They are grained every day and they get a 4×5…

Deer in a Jar
Do you have recipes that call for beef tips or ask to cut large pieces of meat into one-inch cubes? I do too!! Ground venison! How much ground hamburger do you buy every month? This is one reason why I can my venison in wide-mouth jars. Venison is a staple at our house and it’s better for your health. You can add so many different things to the meat when you can it. I always add a teaspoon of…

Who Doesn't Love Maple Syrup
It’s That Time of Year Again This post is an excerpt from several posts on my old blog, countrygirllifeonthefarm, but it’s the right time of year to show up again.  If you have a maple tree in your back yard you can make your own maple syrup just like we do (in a condensed version)!  It takes 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup or 20 gallons makes two quarts.  You could cook it off on…

A Day on The Farm During and Preparing for A Winter Storm
A winter storm for us can mean several days of temperatures in the teens or single digits, can mean a day or four of rain, sleet and snow, can mean 30+ mph winds for 2-4 days, can mean one, two, four inches of snow for several days or an accumulation of all of the above. We don’t travel much at all especially with any of these weather events but farming means working on the farm during these…

Canned Tomatoes To Pasta Sauce
Summer 2022 was not as productive in our garden as we would have liked due to late frosts and freezes and draught late. We planted about twenty different tomato plants, Mr. Stripey, San Marazano and some Virginia sweets. They didn’t produce like they normally do but I did get enough to can 15 jars of Mr. Stripey. They are normally a very large yellow with red streaks and very little acid. Neither…

Saving Apple Seeds
A few years ago, I saved some seeds from our favorite apples. I planted those seeds the first year we had the greenhouse and I was truly surprised that they sprouted within two weeks and grew all summer.  Apple seeds to be sown in spring 2024. Three of my first from seed. I think I planted about 20 that year. I know that growing from seed won’t give us the “true tree” the seed came from, but…

Cooking Journey With A Oster Air Fryer Oven
My husband bought me an Oster Air Fryer Oven for Christmas. It’s the size of a large microwave. The Oster is a warmer, air fryer, broiler, baking oven and convection oven all in one. It uses 110 voltage and hopefully will cut back on electricity use once I learn how to use it. It has easy to read directional knob. It’s been a challenge learning how to cook with it. I’ve got the hang of baking…

Indoor Green House Growth
My indoor plant room is full of houseplants and getting out of hand. This end of the room has an east facing window and most of the houseplants grow really well. The 12 x 14 room is upstairs in the northeast end of the house. I need to decide which plants need to take priority before I add anymore. I will be sharing some of the duplicate plants with friends and several of them need some extra…
