Last night, in 90 degree heat, and with the help of a few friends and Crazy Eddie’s truck and trailer I put up my 200 bales of hay for the winter. Then I had just enough energy to freshen up the duck water and feed the horses some apples.

My run was slow today because I spent my Saturday helping Daughter in her garden. Today was such a beautiful day I just had to get out in my garden after lunch. It all needed a good weed and tidy up. I cut back the Dahlia's and a few other plants that were done for the summer. I worked so hard I wore a hole in my gardening gloves. It took several hours to knock the garden into shape and it looked great when I was done. I had hoped to repot some of my indoor plants but I ran out of time. I had some laundry to sort before tea so it took priority. Weekends are not long enough.

for all the girlies who may be using radiator/prewar apartment heating for the first time this is your warning: don’t be me. don’t sleep next to the radiator. it’s so tempting to have a warm bed and warm blankets. but I woke up one night because I heard a sizzling sound and it was my leg hairs burning off bc i had rolled onto the radiator in my sleep. give the radiator her own space.

A Day on The Farm During and Preparing for A Winter Storm
A winter storm for us can mean several days of temperatures in the teens or single digits, can mean a day or four of rain, sleet and snow, can mean 30+ mph winds for 2-4 days, can mean one, two, four inches of snow for several days or an accumulation of all of the above. We don’t travel much at all especially with any of these weather events but farming means working on the farm during these…

Garden Report 22.09.03
This isn’t the garden report you are looking for ... there really isn’t anything here.
Earlier in the week, in the wee hours when most people would be blissfully sleeping, I am listening to the rolling and rampaging of the night creatures. Across the roof. Into the trees. Then, through the brambles, onto the old bamboo cane holding the biggest load of hops there came the sounds of shredding foliage, shrill screams and the sounds of things cracking, splintering, breaking and falling to the ground. The piercing screams stay near my head ... and its not me who is vocalizing! I peer outside and see the massive amount of hops have been torn loose from their supports / their supports training them up the house have been broken. I tap on the window pane, hoping the screamer would stop but it gets louder. I scratch at the corner wall only to have the volume ratchet up. I’‘m now worrying I’ve caught something too large for my traps and either the neighbors are going to get involved or they will just call the police ... I settle back to try to hatch a plan but the noise slowly fades and I fall asleep trying to decide what I should do.
At dawn I go out. No creature needing to be dispatched; my trap still waiting. But my hops ... they need about two more weeks. I get some bamboo and do a makeshift lift across the clothes line. Now the garden is blocked with a thick curtain of hops. No watering ... and the autumn raspberries are just starting to ripen!
No, the winter garden did not get put in. With the night marauders there is no sane reason to do so.
The Asian pear is just about ripe. If the rat-so & company have left any potatoes, there should be enough for hopefully one meal for the family. The blackberries would be harvesting about now but birds and other critters have been making a mess as they feast. The elderberry is still in perpetual bloom; I am hoping to get a couple of ripen berry bracts off for a tincture.
I’ve done a bit of red cabbage sauerkraut for the pantry and a little pickled beets. All the produce has to be purchased / barter/ traded. I have been able to do some trading (my signs/art labor for produce). There seems to be a carrot shortage (and lettuce) commercially and local gardens/allotments. Peas haven’t done much in the area but the green beans are starting to come in late. The apple and pear crops are fair to middling. It will definitely be an interesting year. The electricity cost has tripled so I am careful with what I dehydrate. I did get some roma tomatoes, some boar’s heart toms in at a local sale. A small batch of kale and a few summer squash also went into the drier. I’ve had to weight time and space (which I have little of) verses electrical cost of a drying session. If the produce is cheap enough, its a slight win. If not, I hope I am hedging my bets against a longer winter before I can get a new garden in and harvest over the rising food cost. Gardening is taking on a whole new approach and too much strategies!
The hens are doing good but we both miss our times together. I have been out so much its like morning out of the coop, feed them, evening quick ration of mealworms before bed while I eat then put them up.
The vermiworms need attention in winter prep. I’m hoping to do that this weekend as that there is a good nip in the mornings. Not quite frost but definitely need to get the jumpers and other woolies out for a good air washing.... but after the hops are done using the line! We are close to trying our hand at brewing but of course, that could very easily change! Such is the winds these days of uncertainties.

First of all I hope you are doing well and I love your game and Mychael 💗 you are amazing. And my question is: does Mychael happen to be intolerant of the cold? You mentioned that when he is sick he seeks warmth, I was curious to know if he, even when he is healthy, has any sensitivity to the cold or the temperatures drop? And what does he do about it in the winter seasons in the forest? Sorry if I don't make myself understood 🙏 I'm using the translator, but have time to answer my question I love you 💗
He's not intolerant, but he definitely prefers warmth, like a "do you like summer or winter" kind of thing. Back during his days of being a nomad, he's had plenty of nights sleeping outside in the cold, so he cherishes being warm and cozy now that he has a proper home.

Autumn and winter is a RUBBISH time for my love of solarpunk to be rekindled, because so much of what I can act on is guerrilla gardening. Alas, here I am, getting back to my solarpunk roots.
Do you have any suggestions for solarpunk activities we can work on in the cold months?
God I feel for this!!! Winter always feels like such a festering time to be in love with solarpunk. Not to mention how starved we are for winter content for solarpunk and lunarpunk in general. But yeah!! Here's some ideas to do in winter!!!
Out and about:
There are a lot more social clubs in your city then you'd expect! I know 2 different community associations in my city that have social clubs that go in adult field trips (like to farms and cafes ans boardgame places!!)! And have crafting clubs! And the best part is if their in your community, it's within a decent walk of you but it's almost always walkable!
Using a library!! For anything! Everything! In my provenance we got a saying "Use it or they
Graffiti- leaving kind messages or fun stickers all over the place isn't really a weather restricted activity for the most part. I know someone who made a Playlist filled with union songs and rebellion songs and put a code for it and links to how to unionize on stickers and did that.
Adopt a stop- more cities have these then you might think! But adopt a stop programs basically let you take care of a certain bus stop and this lets you add things (like good benches, shoveling and removing ice, asking the city to add heaters, etc..) you become the advocate for that bus stop. If your city doesn't have a program like it yet you can ask your city or community to start one since it saves a bunch of money on maitance costs!
At home:
Archiving and pirating - highly recommend doing it in a physical sense if you can afford it. Bc then you can give them out as gifts!
Create!! - Sewing, sewing for friends, knitting gloves/scarfs for ppl who might need it, make art to inspire others via writing or drawing or other mediums! Gift economies require gifts after all so make some!
Learn! - learning a new skill, like canning or how to install solarpanels. Researching in general, but also keeping up to date with local politics and what you can do on the ground there. Building up knowledge is such as useful even if it doesn't feel like your doing anything.
Connect! - Shoveling neighbors walkways, or in general connecting with the ppl in your immediate surroundings! They can help you out in ways you couldn't imagine, someone didn't bake often so they gave me 15lbs of flour!! And their extra pair of snow boots, I hadn't had snow boots since I was 12 years old and it meant the world to me. The pizza I taught her daughter to make and a cheap meal for them meant the world for them. These small acts really are what tie each other together.
Plan! - plan for next year, what kind of equipment can you gather? What do you wanna accomplish next growing season? Seed swaps are also a fun thing I know ppl will do in winter as they start preserving food!

Heads up east coast
They are calling for a bad winter, almost if not just as bad as what happened to Texas a few years ago.
So start stocking up. I recommend starting with these:
Toilet paper (not all at once! Maybe just an additional small pack every time you get more. Flushable wipes are also good)
Period products
Canned goods
Gallons of water (Aldis has some for about $0.85
A small tent (if you can. Check Walmart.) If the power goes out, popping a small tent inside can help keep you a little warmer. If I remember correctly, inside the tent can be about 10° warmer.
A cold weather sleeping bag. (I got one for 30° weather from Walmart for under $25) if it's too big, stuff blankets at the bottom
Socks, socks, socks
At least 3 sources of fire (matches, lighters, etc)
Solar powered charging blocks
Batteries
Candles
Possibly a small camping stove (if you use this inside be careful.
If you have a fire place, make sure that shit is cleaned now. (I also encourage you to start collecting lint from the dryer as a fire starter
Tape cellophane over the windows to help with drafts.
Try to get boots or water proof your boots
Salt for the ground
Jarred goods
Find your local food pantries if you are worried about running out of food.
When it gets to freezing Temps, let your taps run a bit at night so they down explode. This can happen even while the power is on, I believe.
And if you can, donate to your local food pantry. Especially diapers. Donate coats. Don't forget the homeless and low income who are going to be in extreme danger.
Anyone else have anything I might have missed?

Busy times. We tacked some annual leave days on to the end of our Easter break and have been busy. We started with some much needed pruning in the garden. We dug out the summer garden and took a very full trailer of green waste to the dump. We stopped off and got a couple of scoops of ready grow on the way home. The plan was to dig over the flower beds and add the ready grow the next day but the rain arrived. When it rained Hubby headed into his workshop and worked on the Cortina restoration and I headed into my sewing room and worked on the baby quilt. Today we went to visit Mum, she had an op to remove cancerous lesions on her nose yesterday. It all went well and she is back at her place and receiving visitors. We went to the mall and got new running shoes first so Mum could have her post lunch snooze. She was in fine form so Hubby snoozed while we chatted. Once home more quilt making happened and some puzzle smashing. We are getting new carpet throughout the house so everything in the carpeted areas of the house has to be moved into the garage or onto one of the decks, weather permitting. Big job which will happen soon so we have started to slowly declutter The puzzles are being broken up and packed away. All of this is not making for a very restful taper week before the Christchurch Marathon on Sunday but by the sound of the rain on the roof now tomorrow will be a sewing room day.

By the time Winter came, each day was starting to bleed into the next. As they got closer to the holidays, Dawn was putting together multiple events and working late into the night.
Tumblr media
Often, she’d crawl into bed long after Phoenix had fallen asleep.
Tumblr media
Due to her late nights, she’d start her mornings later, and Phoenix would be up early, doing his best to get ready quietly so as not to wake her.
Tumblr media
For him, work had become so busy that he rarely got a day off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, they both finally got a break over Winterfest. It felt like it had been months since getting to spend a day together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And with no obligations aside from their annual dinner at Julian’s, they spent every possible minute in bed, knowing they'd be back to their busy schedules the next day.

First Canning of the Year
Tenderette green beans were ready, and I was afraid as wet as it is they might rot. I pulled on my big girl boots and waded in the mud and picked enough for three canners. We knew there would be at least two more canners by the weekend. By the time I got to complete this post the second batch was ready to pick, and we did. We pulled up the vines this time and picked them clean. I canned a total…
