Garden Report & Frugal Living 23.12.02

I peeked out the back window. All the garden chores were still out there waiting for me. It looks like they invited friends and are having a party.

The winter birds have arrived from out of town. Some of these guest will just rest up and carry on while others will settle in for the season. I should put up the suet racks soon but first to move out the ROUS gang (rodents of unusual size) to make the accommodations a bit more safer for the feathered one. Still dealing with woman next door and her cat.

Winter time leaves the hens looking anemic and forlorn like little ghost floating under the coop in their sand box. Yesterday I gave them this summer's strawberry that had been thawed. I love that little noise they make when they find something good to eat. They all huddled around their dish making little satisfied hen humming noises while they gobbled up their treat.

I really haven't been out in the garden due to circumstances. I can see (and hear) it from inside, the cheery red rose hips, the glistening camilla leaves, the happy chatter of little birds. I'm satisfied for now to just be looking at it instead of in it -- like watching from the sidelines.

Coming down to the last of pantry preps from the garden harvest. I hopefully will get some help sorting apples and then designating some to the dehydrator.

Frugal tip for the day: I love cake and muffins and perogies and all those type of baked goods but stuff them up with extra goodness. Cakes can accommodate fruit (fresh or dried) and jams as can muffins. Got an apple that is still good but past prime then chop and dice to pop in in the batter. Stuff up those periogies, quesadillas, wonton wrappers etcetc with left overs! You can even reinvent your casseroles this way. If you can make pizza dough, go ahead with those left overs and add then on your dough to leave flat or roll up like a jelly roll, slice and bake. Just get creative and enjoy!

The house you grew up in had secret passages?? 👀

technically only one was truly a secret passage, but I like to count the easily visible trapdoor-accessible loft anyway because unlike a typical trapdoor-accessible attic the loft was two parts on two sides of the house and the only way to the second half was an honest-to-god indoor wooden bridge.

The true secret passage was actually the door to the only bathroom, which was a sliding bookcase. It was a tiny house and when it was being built the options were "will we use this space for a bookcase, or a bathroom door?" and the answer was "yes"

#I grew up in a very strange and mildly illegal (nobody told the city it was being built) house #in later years everyone claimed it had been on the property since before the family bought it in the early 70s #in the winter we'd wrap the porch in canvas and use space heaters to turn it into another room #to host family banquets #we had a 26 person thanksgiving on that porch once #the backdoor of the house was also in the bathroom but we didn't use it because it was a straight four foot drop into stinging nettles #and the stairs has been removed years prior #the whole house was wood-heated #I have a lot of nostalgia for that house even though it was much too small for our family #and it was best we got a place with more than one bathroom #and that didn't have the bathtub in the pantry #ask #okayto

#part of the problem is that anyone could engage me in psychological warfare and win right now. they're not special #but also we have no money and having to throw out like half our non-perishables has reduced me to tears multiple times now #and they've chewed new holes to get past all the ones we blocked up last winter and aren't taking the bait from any of our traps #at this point i really don't know what to do to get rid of them #other than 'not have food' which is looking more and more tempting by the day #seeing as i can't enter the pantry without wanting to cry #sorry all............ i am a wreck of a person these days

Underrated getting to know you question is what someone's favorite feral gremlin meals are (by this I mean the things you feed yourself when you have no energy/motivation, requiring max like 10 minutes of prep and 3-4 ingredients, often-though-not-necessarily in odd combinations but always with pantry staples or at least things you are basically guaranteed to have on hand)

#like technically 'cereal for dinner' sort of fills this niche but the spirit of it is more like. it does require SOME effort #in that you decided to combine things in a way that may be sort of odd and/or stark but that you personally find satisfying #however that is ALL the effort it requires and also you've done it enough times that it's sort of mindless #mine is some kind of flatbread/pita/naan (i always have this in the freezer 'cause i make it with sourdough discard) #+ greek yogurt + chile crisp. Turn the oven to 450 to defrost/toast the bread. drizzle chile oil over yogurt. scoop and eat. #light enough for summer but cozy enough for winter and you have to wash exactly 1 dish + 1 spoon #(or zero dishes if it happens to be the end of the yogurt container) #also lbr i just want to try everyone's strangely satisfying lazy pantry meals #culinary adventures #my posts

#speculation nation #i really said 'im going to speedrun this game as fast as possible and im gonna do it NOW' #im midway through fall. i am probably the richest i have ever been in a stardew valley game by this point #regularly making like 5-10k a day... #ive been going for elliott in this game and i had him at 3 hearts at the start of fall #bc ive largely been ignoring social stuff in favor of deep diving in the mines lol #but i have the horse now (got it in summer) and so talking is easier #and i gave him a gift he loved for his bday and got him up to 7 hearts right there #and i was just like.... Wait a Sec. I Can Do This. #so i am AGGRESSIVELY romancing him so i can marry him before winter comes. so i dont have to wait for spring lol #ive gotten him up to 9 hearts. and it is the 12th of fall. i can totally do this #got the house upgrade so that's dealt with. got a silver quality duck feather im gonna give him once the week resets #ive got ONE HUNDRED AND TWELVE (112!!!) pumpkins planted in addition to all my normal crops #any day now and im gonna have an EXPLOSION of money #i have a coop and barn. both of which have been upgraded once each. #all my skills are at like 8-9 range #and yes of Course i have reached the bottom of the mines. #i started up this game again just a few days ago. on the 26th. & the game was on day 11 of spring then #so in 3 days ive progressed 2 months and raised hundreds of thousands of gold. lmfao. #i have also completed much of the community center. boiler room Done. pantry just needs a large goat milk and a pumpkin #i still need winter foraging items & then the craft room will be done #fishing just needs specialty fish. which r annoying lol i totally missed the pufferfish. hoping to find it for sale in the cart #the vault is completely not done but i probably will start putting money into that once i get my pumpkin harvest #all my money has been going towards back to back buildings and expansions. robin has been BUSY lmfao #oh also the animals. 2 chickens 2 ducks 2 cows 2 goats. i could have twice that amount but im waiting on that #there keep being signs of new content everywhere and i dont know what to do about it #caught this like shadow salmon in the forest lake and i was just like. what the Fuck are you. #+ them saying pufferfish is available year round at the island but i cant go there until i get a pufferfish </3 heartbreaking #anyways yea thats why ive been so absent. ive just been spending every waking moment that i can dedicated to this game #sometimes stardew valley is a casual game of exploration and love. & sometimes. it's whatever intensely driven thing im doing here lol

If only there were a cranberry bog near me, I could probably go there and be like "listen... I actively like spiders... you should hire me", and then maybe I could get a nice job with the benefit of working collaboratively with spiders if I understand things correctly

#given one time I was taking a spider out and didn't feel like grabbing a cup #and they scurried off the paper and on to my hand and I literally didn't care #was more worried about how they jumped ship on the stairs rather than in the pantry where I was taking them #I feel like I can officially say I'm not scared of spiders #unless they're really venomous; I don't got a problem with them; and even there it's more about my cats #if it were just me in the house; yeah I'd give em a wide berth just to be safe #but I'm not sure if I'd bother tossing out something venomous #and I certainly don't think I'd kill em (which I probably would do if I saw one since the cats are here) #far less of a fan of hornets; though out here at least they're chill #you just cautiously cup em and toss em out; and if it's winter they're dying and hardly want to move #(sometimes I just put em in the basement; last one I saw I put next to the tree outside) #(they're already as good as dead; just gotta find em some place comfortable) #wasps are chiller out here than in the city; but they still just won't fucking sit still and... Like, bath stool, film to cover windows to get rid of flies, got my new top bug zapper for like $40 up in my kitchen been zapping all night.

I have to return like $300 of stuff, hopefully soon. I have to walk down my neighborhood etc. and some of the street and print out labels and put them in the post office, already with packaging. I need a refund for extra laundry money, working funny, maybe I can call, didn't get the e-mail back earlier today, Monday. I may take the bus down the street and chose some okay shoes, maybe even get dressed up which is what I need to do as I've done some laundry, already. So, I don't have good enough running sneakers. I just got house shoes, winter books, and dance sneakers with flat toes for exercise such as balancing also maybe for things like regular things like Pilates or even yoga so. I guess if I returned not much worth it when there's "food pantries" at churches floating around and I have a bus pass. I may get 3 or 4 Every Plate kits. Is anyone also in Cleveland just interested in why I have a new jacket?
