So at my workplace, we fund a Food Is Free shelf. It's the basics: take what you need, give what you can - our town has a high level of poverty, there's a cost of living crisis, be the good you want to see in the world etc etc.
Today we had a guy knock on the door and ask if we had a plastic bag he could use to carry a few things - I said sure, got him a plastic bag, and he started packing up his 2 rolls of toilet paper, his 3 or 4 foodstuff items. He said he'd been to a funeral out of town (1500 kms away) and spent his paycheck on fuel - he was only broke till Friday, he said.
And I said, well I'm glad we could help, it's why we have the shelf. We want the community to use it.
And he said:
But people ABUSE it! I've seen people take heaps of stuff from it - and they don't even have kids or anything. And it's fair enough, some people are struggling until the next paycheck, but other people just ABUSE it. You need a sign that says TAKE ONE ITEM ONLY or something. I've taken something from here maybe twice, but I've seen people coming round every week! I've even put stuff on the shelf! Yeah, you need CAMERAS or something. People abuse it.
So here is a man who is actively utilising a public resource that we created to support our local community...And yet he is so brainwashed by capitalism into thinking that people don't deserve basic needs - if they're not working hard, or maybe they're struggling but they don't have it As Bad as others, or they're using a FREE RESOURCE more often than HE thinks is acceptable. He thinks that we should use security cameras to crack down on people "STEALING" from the Food is FREE shelf. Like he's more worthy, like he's a better person, because he doesn't need as much help as others might.
Sometimes, when something is free, people might abuse it. But isn't it better to offer the support to people who need it? To offer an opportunity for people to get back on their feet (even if they're only broke till Friday)? To provide help, no questions asked and no conditions needed?
So what if people abuse it - isn't it worth it if helps someone?

Donations to Food Banks
source
Everyone donates Kraft Mac and Cheese in the box. They can rarely use it because it needs milk and butter which is hard to get from regular food banks.
Boxed milk is a treasure, as kids need it for cereal which they also get a lot of.
Everyone donates pasta sauce and spaghetti noodles.
They cannot eat all the awesome canned veggies and soup unless you put a can opener in too or buy pop tops.
Oil is a luxury but needed for Rice a-Roni which they also get a lot of.
Spices or salt and pepper would be a real Christmas gift.
Tea bags and coffee make them feel like you care.
Sugar and flour are treats.
They fawn over fresh produce donated by farmers and grocery stores.
Seeds are cool in Spring and Summer because growing can be easy for some.
They rarely get fresh meat.
Tuna and crackers make a good lunch.
Hamburger Helper goes nowhere without ground beef.
They get lots of peanut butter and jelly but usually not sandwich bread.
Butter or margarine is nice too.
Eggs are a real commodity.
Cake mix and frosting makes it possible to make a child’s birthday cake.
Dishwashing detergent is very expensive and is always appreciated.
Feminine hygiene products are a luxury and women will cry over that.
Everyone loves Stove Top Stuffing.
Check with your local food bank that they accept fresh produce/meat.

PLEASE SHARE!!
Making this post for Illinois residents:
I got a flyer in the mail from University of Illinois & Find Food IL for a website that has a map resource of everywhere that accepts SNAP benefits.
This includes grocery stores, food pantries, schools, meal sites, senior food resources, government offices, and the most exciting to me, farmers markets!!! I've never been to a farmers market before because I didn't think they accepted food stamps.
You can look up your city/town & any other surrounding cities/towns that might be accessible to you. Theres a button that I've circled in red that will show a list of all resources in the area you've chosen. You can also search by resource by clicking on one of these icons I've circled in blue (scroll horizontally for more.)
I'm using the mobile site, so on a computer this might look slightly different.
Tumblr media
I would appreciate if, even if you don't live in Illinois, you could share this information. I'm not sure if everyone is aware of it, or if everyone got a flyer for it; I certainly had NO idea and it's really an exciting & life-changing kind of thing to think about being able to get fresh, locally grown food with SNAP.
Obviously, I've yet to actually go & check out my local options, so I'm not sure what the process will be like yet or if there are any limitations. Plus, naturally, everywhere is probably different. However, just to KNOW this exists is important enough to share the information.

Buffalo - Little Food Pantries List
Buffalo – Little Food Pantries List
During the beginning of the pandemic, Little Food Pantries popped up all over western new york. Originally the concept was based on the Little Free Libraries (mailboxes full of free books). Local churches and schools especially in Western New York saw a need for food during the pandemic, especially in winter. How Does a Little Food Pantry Work? Individuals pick up or drop off pantry items.…

Shame
I write this blog because it helps me sort out my feelings, my thoughts about my life, and to share my experiences with some folks who either can relate or those who care about me. I do not ask for anything but a few minutes of your time if you are so inclined. But my last post brought gifts from some of you. You read my piece and felt for me and my family’s current situation. Your generosity and…

I say this as someone who works at a nonprofit: the attitude “someone who has nothing will be grateful for anything” is harmful and dehumanizing when it’s used to justify donating something ripped, stained, or expired to someone less fortunate.
Homeless people deserve clothing with good structural integrity. Victims of house fires deserve linens that are free of stains. No one should have to eat expired food. It’s disrespectful to give people scraps when they’re already hurting.
Please, out of respect for your fellow humans, check the dates on your food donations before you drop them off.

Amazon Packages
Like, bath stool, film to cover windows to get rid of flies, got my new top bug zapper for like $40 up in my kitchen been zapping all night.
I have to return like $300 of stuff, hopefully soon. I have to walk down my neighborhood etc. and some of the street and print out labels and put them in the post office, already with packaging. I need a refund for extra laundry money, working funny, maybe I can call, didn't get the e-mail back earlier today, Monday. I may take the bus down the street and chose some okay shoes, maybe even get dressed up which is what I need to do as I've done some laundry, already. So, I don't have good enough running sneakers. I just got house shoes, winter books, and dance sneakers with flat toes for exercise such as balancing also maybe for things like regular things like Pilates or even yoga so. I guess if I returned not much worth it when there's "food pantries" at churches floating around and I have a bus pass. I may get 3 or 4 Every Plate kits. Is anyone also in Cleveland just interested in why I have a new jacket?

Sharing the Surplus: AmpleHarvest.org
Are you awash in garden zucchini or tomatoes? Neighbors decline zucchini and what are you to do with it? Or at other times of the year in SoCal what do you do with the extra oranges or peaches?
Here’s your solution. Share your garden harvest with a local food pantry through AmpleHarvest.org AmpleHarvest.org is a free, opt-in, nationwide registry that enables gardeners who’ve grown too much food to easily find food pantries in their area. They use technology to enable home and community gardeners to share their surplus harvests instead of letting them go to waste.
Here’s how it works: (From their website) Food Pantries tell AmpleHarvest.org the days and times they want to receive fresh food. Most food pantries find that gardeners’ produce is quickly taken by their clients — often with hours of delivery. Refrigerated storage is rarely an issue. Gardeners find pantries on AmpleHarvest.org, and bring their surplus of locally grown, fresh food. The best part? The food comes without packaging and isn’t trucked across the country, which is better for the environment. People in need have healthier food options available to them. Eating fresh lowers the risk of diet related illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity.
From the AmpleHarvest.org website:
Our Vision AmpleHarvest.org envisions an America where millions of gardeners eliminate wasted food, malnutrition and hunger in their own community.
The ultimate goal of AmpleHarvest.org: To end food waste and hunger, reduce malnutrition and help the environment in America.
What is AmpleHarvest.org? AmpleHarvest.org is a nationwide non-profit that uses technology to educate and enable the estimated 61 million (up from 42 million in pre-COVID19 world) Americans who grow food in home and community gardens to easily donate their surplus harvest to one of 8,159 registered local food pantries spread across all 50 states. These food pantries help nourish the one out of six Americans (including a quarter of all kids under six) that rely on these pantries.
The ultimate goal of AmpleHarvest.org: To end food waste and hunger, reduce malnutrition and help the environment in America.
Content for this blog post is taken primarily from the AmpleHarvest.org website.
