I say this as someone who works at a nonprofit: the attitude “someone who has nothing will be grateful for anything” is harmful and dehumanizing when it’s used to justify donating something ripped, stained, or expired to someone less fortunate.
Homeless people deserve clothing with good structural integrity. Victims of house fires deserve linens that are free of stains. No one should have to eat expired food. It’s disrespectful to give people scraps when they’re already hurting.
Please, out of respect for your fellow humans, check the dates on your food donations before you drop them off.

In 2021, while struggling with my disability, I came across a post on Facebook. The post was about a person speaking about how they made scarves for the unhoused.
This post sparked something in me, and as of 2023, I have been doing just that for 2 years. With some help from my mom I taught myself how to crochet scarves. Over the past 2 years, crocheting scarves has become my favorite hobby, and become a great way to cope with my disability.
Though I know this project won't end homelessness, it will provide one more layer of warmth for those struggling during the cold months. I'm glad to know that I am able to do something to help my fellow humans, and at the same time it's something that helps me as well.
This year alone, I have created 12 scarves.
If you'd like to support me and what I do, consider commissioning a scarf from me. I currently offer single and two tone scarves for $54 and $66 respectively.
Every commission furthers my charitable work. Each one allows me to make at least two scarves for those in need in addition to the commissioned piece. For every piece you purchase, two scarves will be donated to this year's chosen charities. Any earnings will go towards additional charitable work. They will allow me to purchase more yarn for scarves and to donate items such as crayons, colored pencils, coloring books and other items that patients can enjoy to Brylin hospital.
This year (2023) I am donating to Friends of the Night People, a charitable organization here in Buffalo NY, and the VA in Cleveland OH.
Please email me at: [email protected]
Edit 10/23/2023:
I have created a log to track whether I am open for commission!

Hi friends! So my mom had been really wanting to volunteer with pro autism/disabled living charities and like... she's a mom? So I'm worried she might end up doing autism speaks or something gross like that? And we don't want that! No we do not! She is 100% ready willing and able to give her time and energy to a charity (local, national, or global, but she's been struggling to find them) that caters ideally to autistic or disabled kids. I was hoping anyone here in the Tumblr soup might be able to point me (and by proxy her) in a decent direction
TLDR: mom wants to volunteer for autism (or at least similar) charity. I don't want it to be autism speaks (obviously). Suggestions please?

This clarifies things a bit in respect that it addresses prevention and the lack of housing. But ... William and Catherine's jobs are to be UK public servants. Their extra projects are nice, and are making a difference, but they get money to do bread and butter engagements. They can't sacrifice those to do this. Many people balance day jobs, family and making a difference.

The English actor Henry Cavill, in the lead role of the war, drama and history movie, conquered hearts in our country, where he came for the first time. The world-famous actor, who attracted great attention with his humble attitude in the hotel he stayed in Belek, did not remain indifferent to the earthquake disaster..
It has been learned that Henry Cavill personally donated 1 million dollars to the earthquake victims and sent food, shelter and animal food to the region..

I am sooooo close to being done with this scarf for the unhoused!
The most lovely part about this scarf is I did the majority of the work at a loved ones house. He made me feel so safe and loved I was able to crochet freely all day long and it is thanks to him that I made so much progress in such a short time.

PSA: If you’re donating things to a nonprofit, please ask yourself:
Do any of the things I’m dropping off belong in the trash?
Contrary to popular belief, people whose houses have burned to the ground deserve to have nice things too and it’s kinda shitty to say things like “if they have nothing, they’ll appreciate anything.” It’s super dehumanizing to receive a stained shirt with holes in it when you’ve just lost all your possessions. So please get rid of that harmful mentality if that’s something you’ve been led to believe. Homeless people are not animals, they’re people. Treat them with respect and dignity.
If your old things you want to get rid of are stained or ripped, do not donate them unless it’s to a recycling center.
