Dark Academia Aesthetic Tips for your daily life
i. write with a black pen, always
ii. drink tea, coffee, less milk, no sugar
iii. read the classics in your free time
iv. use roman numerals
v. wear plaid skirts and basic, beige colored turtlenecks, boyfriend jeans with a maroon sweater
vi. quote random historical facts and philosophical facts to your friends—throw them off their rhythm.
vii. maintain a journal, document your most mundane activities, make your writing sound as prolific and verbose and pretentious as possible.
viii. learn a new word every day, know its usage, write it at the back your books to remember it
ix. make an effort to read the newspaper—nothing sexier than a person who can quote both Plato and the latest political drama on the front page.
x. bookmark your pages with dried flowers ;)
stay safe, loves,
rae.

shakespeare: encouraging depressed dark academics to be dramatic & extra, to pretend to be avenging the death of a loved one at any given instant, to fall in love and be too stupid to think of the repercussions, to be gay, to commit treason, to be ready to scream into the abyss at all times since c. 1600

types of dark academics
classic dark academic: thrifts old books, drinks coffee, writes poetry when bored, visits museums, reads a lot, loves documentaries, loves languages, the teacher’s favourite.
nature-inspired dark academic: lots of plants in their room, pressed flowers, probably vegan, has a cat, wears glasses, loves tea, obsessed with biology, has a tight group of friends.
music-obsessed dark academic: always has their earphones with them, goes to concerts a lot, studies with music on, loves wearing a T-shirt+blazer combo, plays the piano or violin.
casual dark academic: wears regular jeans most of the time, loves studying, reads a lot of reference, probably is a youtuber, into science, loves thrifting, writes essays, good at art.

"The observer's eye was arrested, not by his face as a picture, but by his face as a page; not by what it was, but by what it recorded. His features were attractive in the light of symbols, as sounds intrinsically common become attractive in language, and as shapes intrinsically simple become interesting in writing."
—Thomas Hardy, The Return of the Native

Romantic Academia
types of dark academia
classic academia: beige trench coats, wool sweaters. plaid skirts. think femme fatale, but educated. sobbing in bed late at night over the secret history or dead poets society. tea with milk and sugar. subsequent tea stains.
darkest academia: running through the rain, dimly lit by streetlights. brown tweed jackets, dress shoes. cold fingers and colder gazes. french-pressed black coffee, piping hot. dark, candlelit rooms with ancient wood floors/walls.
light academia: white cable-knit sweaters, sparkly eyes and foggy glasses. going to art museums and falling in love with every portrait, every sculpture. caressing the petals of a rose, hearing the crinkle of leaves underfoot.
witchy academia: burning candles while reading or doing homework. black turtlenecks, velvet skirts. walking through the forest in autumn. passing a graveyard and feeling a greyish presence. waiting anxiously for samhain.
romantic academia: writing flowery poetry about someone you’ll never speak to (guilty oops). a cozy alizarin sweater, pleated skirts. slow dancing around your room to the beatles. curling up with warm, pallid cups of tea and a book.
scholarly academia: impeccable notes in class. leather bound bags crammed with textbooks and pens. lots of coffee with scones, and even more late nights. a wide vocabulary (that people constantly comment on). lives in the library.
theatre academia: shakespeare, all the time - quoting, reading, praying for a school production of a midsummer nights dream. or the crucible. memorizing lines in the wings. taking on your character’s traits, even outside the theater.

books?? amazing. paperbacks?? soft, cozy, may fit in your pocket, cheap so you don’t feel bad for taking notes in them. hardcovers??? beautiful, pristine, ground you into the world they hold by making you grip them tighter, the stars of every bookshelf. ebooks?? convenient, cheap, always with you, a vast library that you can hold in your palm. new books?? crisp, the smell of wood, ideas waiting to imprint themselves upon the world. old books?? objects transcending history, sweet smelling, enriched by the hands that stroked their pages. books.

Since when did it become acceptable and encouragable to substitute greatness with mediocrity? Since when did we start thinking that settling is a replacement for exploring, and that stepping out is a risk too big to take for the sake of comfort? At what point in millennial history did people think that the text they send you when they’re alone at 2 AM became the new romantic gesture? When did being the mistress and the side and the in between and the bridge become the new aesthetic for modern love? When did love even become that? Tell me when did we start thinking that an afternoon spent with someone else start holding more beauty than a night spent in a field full of stars? Seven miles your west lays an entire cave full of fireflies and you tell me it’s too dark in your mind? There are literally footprints on the moon, and you tell me you’re willing to settle in the dirt that doesn’t even grow your favorite roses? You tell me you’re too thirsty for love, too deprived of the fantasy, that you satiate your desire of it with half-hearted promises and pretentiously crafted texts, when there is literally, an entire universe next door that doesn’t compromise your idea of beauty and love for comfort and settlement.
Don’t settle. Just live.
Just live.

academia type things to do during quarantine
- write letters to your long lost lover
- pretend you’ve been locked away in a castle with no company but your own and your favourite books
- gaze longingly out the window at the stars
- daydream about a pretty gal/guy/whatever rescuing you from the prison cell that is your home
- sent your friends heartfelt notes
- redecorate your room with random things around your house
- if you have a garden: pick flowers and frame them on your wall
- if you don’t: you may still be able to pick some from your local park
- write the next greatest piece of literature
- get through your to-read list
- practice a skill you’ve been wanting to learn. embroidery, perhaps?
- fake your death. murder is always a good way to go
- pretend you’re a character in a classic novel
- design your own clothes (or whatever!)
- create impeccable spotify playlists (or you could add to this one)
- eavesdrop on your neighbours and make notes…unless it’s something you shouldn’t be hearing
- people-watch from your balcony
feel free to add more! remember to take care of yourself and your family during this time. and don’t forget, looking after your mental and physical health is really important right now. i love you all. stay safe! <3
