I’ve had fun over the past few months cutting up geological reports and maps and re-assembling them into geological features. This is a horst and graben. 🤓 . A graben is a collapsed or down-dropped block of rock that is bordered on its long sides by faults. Grabens are normally associated with horsts, which are the up-thrown blocks of rock in between. This is the work of Orra White Hitchcock (1796-1863), a huge inspiration of mine. She made boldly coloured, large scale drawings of the Earth’s crust. Orra was one of America’s earliest botanical and scientific illustrators and is best known for producing wall charts that illustrated the scientific work of her husband, geologist Edward Hitchcock. I can’t imagine not wanting to learn about geology in a classroom lined with Orra’s charts! 😍 Only 4 more days until my show, ‘Mass Movement’.
