“When I die, my epitaph should be: I died a thousand deaths. That was the story of my film career. Most of the time I played in mystery and intrigue stories. They didn’t know what to do with me at the end, so they killed me off.” — Anna May Wong

A lot of tcomc adaptations I've seen have ended the story by having Edmond get his revenge and then happily reunite with Mercédés and leave the story like that, and here's why that does NOT fly with me.
The Count of Monte Cristo is NOT a love story about Edmond and Mercédés, though it starts that way. A lot of adaptations tend to do this, as in zero in on the romance (and leave Haydée out if the plot, wtf???) But the romance, although an accessory of the tragedy, is NOT central to the tragedy! Mondego, Danglars, Caderousse, and Villefort didn't JUST steal Edmond away from Mercédés, they also a) left his father to starve to death, b) took advantage of Mercédés' misery to marry her when she had no one left, c) abandoned Edmond to suffer in prison presumably for the rest of his life, and d) did all of that other insane shit that didn't affect Edmond personally.
But the point of the original ending is that there is too much time lost between Edmond and Mercédés, too much loneliness between them, and they have changed too much apart from each other for things to go back to how they were. Although Mercédés can see past the Counts callousness to find his old humanity, Edmond HAS changed, he's not the same bright-eyed young man who had so much in life to do. Mercédés isn't the same untroubled, poor woman Edmond fell for, and that's okay! They still love each other, though they have different paths in life and different responsibilities! It just seems, maybe cheap is the right word, to give Edmond the traditional "happy ending" by having him "get the girl back" in the end, as if that were the point of his efforts. They've earned their peace!
#the count of monte cristo#mercedes herrera#edmond dantes#while I do agree that the book in a way gave her a VERY sad ending (esp when she said she is 'now between two graves'#symbolizing her mourning the two men she lost in her life)#and I do wish she at least had Albert by her side#I honestly don't think the alternative of her and Edmond getting back together is ever really a solution?#unless you were to alter A TON of the story beforehand#I just feel like the added company of Edmond to her life now wouldn't really offer any consolidation to what she's lost when#a) he's directly responsible for her losing her place in society after Fernand was exposed#b) he's NOT the same Edmond she mourns! that's the whole point!#her final words of crying over him aren't really for the same Edmond that we now know as the Count#she mourns the old him and the life they could have had while Edmond tried to destroy everyone who robbed him of that#also; none of these adaptations ever take into account the question of how Albert would handle that when we know Mercedes loves him SO MUCH#she loves him enough to go against the man she loved and mourned who agreed to possibly kill her son in a duel#another thing to add but I also think that Mercedes' book ending; while obviously not great#is also the point for Edmond;#she suffers as a result of his plans; regardless of how he would've approached ruining Fernand he would then by extension completely alter#Mercedes' life; she literally foreshadows this when she warns Edmond to not see Fernand as an enemy when they first meet#his plans end up altering the course of her life AND ending another; and he WILL have to live with this#that's also why I don't consider his ending with Haydee to be some sort of 'oh so he gets the girl and the happy ending'#he's like 5 seconds away from ending his life before Haydee's words change his mind#and his confession is then him literally saying 'maybe your love can help me forget that which I do not wish to remember'#meaning the destruction he caused in his quest for revenge#it's not a fully happy ending for him; but it IS the only thing he can really do

What do you think of the "revenge bad" tropes frequently found
it actually pisses me off sooooo much when characters are like “ohhh but if i hurt or kill the bastard who made my life and others’ a living hell i’m just as bad as they are!” like grow up and shoot him what are you catholic
