howdy to whoever sees this.
i’m going to take a break off of studyblr. i kind of died inside mentally today and i think it’s centered around the concept of too much responsibility. now, studyblr, is something i lowkey see as a responsibility. i’m going to give it up for the sake of my own stress levels, lol, so i can go focus on the things i value more-- my writing, my actual studying, my music. may occasionally post things, we’ll see,  definitely no commitment on my part. but, uh, goodbye and thanks for all the notes. studyblr made me happy, while it lasted.
y’all’s truly,

I’m just going to be blunt here: the dark academia aesthetic is extremely white-centered, euro-centric, and romanticized. as students, it is essential that we are showing up for our BIPOC siblings (specifically our Black friends) in every single aspect of our lives including our online spaces. as a part of the studyblr community, our tendency to be consumers is pretty inevitable- whether we’re shopping for cute stickers to decorate our planners or looking for the next novel to read, it is time that we acknowledge the importance of where that money is going towards. I URGE YOU TO STOP BUYING ON AMAZON! here is a non-comprehensive list I’ve put together of BIPOC small and/or independent businesses!
please feel free to reblog this and add onto this list (obviously keeping in mind the criteria I’ve previously mentioned) to spread the support for our BIPOC creatives and business owners. (the ones in *starred italics* are my personal favorites, but you should really check every business out!)

Quote
One can never read too little of bad books, or too much of good books: bad books are intellectual poison; they destroy the mind.
Arthur Schopenhauer, “On Books and Reading”, Parerga and Paralipomena (via philosophybits)
ok lowkey i kind of have to respectfully disagree. feel free to debate me (respectfully) on this tho bc i wanna know y’all’s thoughts. i say all this from the perspective of a young novelist who has spent a large portion of her life reading books and thinking about things.
1. it’s impossible to never read a “bad” book because “good” and “bad” are so subjective. A piece of literature with, say, weak characters, can have masterful world-building. Someone who loves reading books about characters may hate that book. However, someone else may fall in love with the world-building. And that’s okay; everybody has different tastes, we just have to recognize both the flaws and the strengths. For the rest of this lil informal essay, though, I’m just going to say good = well thought-out,  and bad = domb and not well thought-out (although theres still a gray line there. eh). yes i am aware that the quote does not say that reading bad books is illegal, however i figured it was worth mentioning bc either way schopenhauer presents a case kinda vehemently against bad books.
2. “Bad books” will not destroy a strong, critically thinking mind. Of course, it is always good to strengthen one’s thinking and beliefs with good literature that explores conflict and morality well. Someone who dissects the messages in a bad piece of literature, however, will be able to find the flaws. Their mind will not be poisoned, although I will say that if someone’s reading mind is young and in need of quality nurturing, then they should be reading good (but easier) books. You do not feed bad food to baby readers. Once they’ve been built up, their mind strong and discerning, they will be capable of understanding good, complex, content, and criticizing the bad.
3. People should read good books, because they need to know what works in literature. However. People, especially authors, also need to know what doesn’t work in literature. You need to know both sides of an argument to mount a capable defense. Similarly, you need to know how, and how not to execute something, and bad books can provide good examples for the latter. For example, I have noticed bad writing style in many, many books. I have taken personal notes to not use awkward gerunds and the word “get” from works by Wilde and Sanderson, and I’ve learned much more from the flaws in Chris Colfer’s writing. I can dissect his awkward dialogue to figure out what he did wrong, and I notice the clunky adverbs. His poor writing has helped mine become better (thanks, Chris.)
4. Bad works can be fun to laugh at. I just watched the first season of Jessie with my brother. The cinematography was terrible, the jokes awful. The characters were walking stereotypes. And we had a great time. I kept looking at my brother after an unfunny quip, and we sang along to the theme song-- he couldn’t hit the oOoOoh’s and I made fun of him. We roasted the portrayal of every single character. We’d get bored and go on Instagram every now and then because the plot was boring. We had a great time, and it was good for me because I’ve been stressed lately and I needed something light that I could make fun of. People really like trashing bad works. It’s fun to hate things. I love hating things. I can laugh at em. It keeps me going, sometimes.

I saw a very good post on why learning literature is important and not at all about "oh the curtains are blue because the character feels sad" and it made me think about math. I didnt want to hijack that post bc it delves on racism and I dont want to speak over them on that.
But
Math isnt about if you can add 674 to 734 very quickly. It isnt about if you can find the x on an equation or if you know what the sin of an angle at a triangle is. Math is about logic. When you learn to look at geometrical problems and its ridiculous angles and sines and all that shit what you actually should be learning is how to interpret a problem. How to look at a situation and understand its roots and understand how that helps you solve your original question.
Not learning basic math is a cute meme, but the consequences are the avalanche of fake information and pseudoscience we have now. The anti vax movement is a great example of a group that just fails to see the roots of an issue, that lack the logical skill to see the faults in their speech. Their hatred against autistic people is fed by that lack of logical linear thought. Its very easy to forget how to argument when you're angry and bitter.
It's a dangerous combination
That's why fake news spread like wildfire even if they are bananas. Because if you don't train your brain to understand logic puzzles you dont use it on other situations.
Of course math isnt the ONLY SUBJETCT WITH LOGIC OWO. That would be stupid to say. But the fact is that is a very direct way to aproach logic that we usually neglect bc its thought to us that all it matters is that you can find x by the end of the day. Especially because our educational system is super kin on pretending humanities and stem dont interlapse. Like if you enjoy history or physolophy or arts you cant enjoy math and physics and chemistry. Like there isnt logic in history and philosophy in science.
This separation is on purpose. Logic in and of itself means nothing if you don't know the historical settings on where to apply it. If you cant do both they can control you.

@ me when i failed the apush exam, something i still havent gotten over oop
Tumblr media
See full response to anon’s ask here.
For anon who asked;
hey can i ask your advice on feeling better after an awful exam? last week i had my hsc half yearlies and i had 5 exams all in one week and i have adhd so study is really hard for me and i did a lot of last minute stuff…and i’ll be lucky if i get 12% and i’m so worried about what my teacher’s going to say…and i’ll embarrass myself and i’ll go from top in the class to irredeemably bottom and it’s all over now but i feel so so awful, i can’t sleep at night bc of stress about it and i don’t know what to do
“Effort will never betray you”
This quote gets circulated around a lot. With good reason.
But you know what?
Sometimes effort will betray you.
So here’s some tips on what to do when that sonofabitch stabs you in the back.
(Aka learning to get up when you’ve been (metaphorically) kicked in the balls)
Immediately after the exam
Fight or Flight?
Everyone responds differently to post-exam stress. Some people find it cathartic to discuss their asnwers immediately after the exam. Others don’t. If you fall within the latter group then don’t be afraid to hightail the fuck out of the exam room as soon as possible. There’s no need to exacerbate your stress levels. Take care of yourself.
What can you control?
Be honest about what you can control after the exam. You can’t sit the exam again, you can’t rewind the clock two weeks and change your study habits. Whilst its natural to feel a sense of regret or dread over the questions you found challenging, realise that these feelings do not change what has happened. The decisive step is how you respond to these negative emotions. For example, try not to let your feelings about your performance in this exam affect your performance in your next exam. Whether it be ‘compartmentalisation’, ‘crying it out’ or ‘ignoring it’ - stick it in the “IOU” box of emotions to unpack later. All you can do now is to wait for your results.
Quick review
While it’s still fresh in your mind, write down three positives of the exam, followed by three negatives. Did your study methods correlate to the areas examined? Were you nervous? Was time management an issue? How did you feel walking out of that exam? What song best describes the entire experience? This quickfire stream of consciousness review will serve as an honest reflection from which you can target and refine your exam preparation technique, both academically and emotionally. I also find writing things down a great way to ‘let go’ of those residual emotions from the exam.
Take a break
Chances are, you’ve been highly strung for the past few weeks (or heck, the all nighter you’ve pulled to study for the exam). Congratulate yourself - fuck yes you’ve completed an exam! Find an activity to break up the cycle of study-eat-rest-study. You’ll be back to that routine in a few hours. Let yourself breathe. Listen to that album, watch that movie, catch up with that friend you’ve been rescheduling for the past month, read that book. Mindlessly scroll tumblr, binge watch netflix - Reset and recuperate so that you’re ready for the next hurdle.
Comparing yourself to others
Its natural to judge your performance against everyone else in the exam, how much they wrote, what answers they got, how they solved a problem. Don’t give too much weight to what people say they’ve done. You don’t know what they wrote, and just because five people wrote the same response doesn’t mean that your response is incorrect. . In the end you can only control your own performance. Putting it bluntly, after the exam, it doesn’t matter what your peers wrote. Because it doesn’t change the fact that you can’t go back and change your answer. What’s done is done.
Upon receiving your results
Break it down
What were your strengths and weaknesses? What types of questions did you do well in? Is it a substantive or procedural problem?  (e.g. is it because you don’t understand the content, or is it because you can’t manage your study time/ write that quickly/ poor time management during the exam). Use this as a matrix to target your study method and review for your next exam
Ask for help
Don’t be afraid to ask your teacher or professor for advice. Even when you’ve done well - it doesn’t hurt to ask where those extra marks could have gone, or how you could further develop your response for future exams. Its always daunting to ask for advice when you’ve done poorly in an exam. But don’t forget, your teacher is paid to help you. Literally.
Special Consideration
If you feel as if your performance has been affected by a health issue, don’t be afraid to ask for a formal review of your marks or for special consideration (alteration of your marks) for your next exam. Check your high school/ university policies on this matter. Some will require formal documentation, and there may be a strict deadline you’ll need to adhere to. Asking for SC is nothing to be ashamed of. It doesn’t mean you are any less deserving of your results. Its simply a recognition that “hey, we need to level the playing field here.“

Looking beyond: University Entry
Success is not a predetermined route.
Whilst it may feel like your future hinges on this one exam, remember your future isn’t some pre-determined linear equation. Your definition of success will change as you change. Your ambitions will change. Your gaols will change. And as long as you keep your mind open and you harbour a willingness to adapt, then there will always be a pathway for you to achieve your success.
And for those who have no frickin’ clue what their ‘passions, dreams, ambitions’ are? Its ok. You don’t need some ‘overarching mission to save the world’ every morning. In the wise words of Tim Minchin:
“Americans on talent shows always talk about their dreams. Fine, if you have something that you’ve always dreamed of, like, in your heart, go for it! After all, it’s something to do with your time… chasing a dream. And if it’s a big enough one, it’ll take you most of your life to achieve, so by the time you get to it and are staring into the abyss of the meaninglessness of your achievement, you’ll be almost dead so it won’t matter. I never really had one of these big dreams. And so I advocate passionate dedication to the pursuit of short-term goals. Be micro-ambitious. Put your head down and work with pride on whatever is in front of you… you never know where you might end up. Just be aware that the next worthy pursuit will probably appear in your periphery. Which is why you should be careful of long-term dreams. If you focus too far in front of you, you won’t see the shiny thing out the corner of your eye. Right? Good. Advice. Metaphor. Look at me go.”
A few pointers:
The following section is sponsored by my opinions
Effort might betray you.
You can work hard at something and still not get the result you want. It’s all about expectation management. You might work hard and fall within the top 1% of your cohort. You can work hard and still fail.
This is not to say that you shouldn’t try at all.
It’s merely a recognition that things don’t always go your way, you cannot control everything. The best thing you can do in that circumstance is to prepare for any contingencies.
You can control how you respond to that failure.
Sometimes it’s a question of studying effectively. The adage ‘study smart, not hard’ etc. Target your study to the syllabus, the material covered in the exam, the specific style of questions in the exam. Sometimes it may simply be exam technique.
Other times its things beyond your control. Stress, nerves, blanking out - we’re only human.
In the end, what you learn from the process is just as important as the result. Conversely, the result may not always justify the means.
On confidence and self worth
Its only natural to assume that your self worth is tied to your academic achievements. Up till now, you’ve spent the majority of your waking hours at school, under the pressure of constant assessments and scrutiny.
Keep in mind that one exam is only a reflection of your performance at one precise time, on one specific date, in one specific place. How you perform on 10am on Monday in exam hall A does not reflect your capacity nor ability for the other 364 days of your life.
Find something which you can do for yourself. Something which you can fail in, without feeling terrible. This other thing doesn’t have to be another ‘hobby’ you’re amazing at. It doesn’t have to be something you’re good at. “Being the best” is not a pre requisite to “enjoying something”.
A final note:
Its ok to be stressed. Its difficult to distinguish our achievements from our self worth. Its not as simple as ‘just getting over it’. Because its something you’ve invested time, emotion, sleep - and a whole heck of a lot more- on. Its something you’ve based your foreseeable future on. The pressure of a promised future, a ‘better future’, a future ‘that justifies all this suffering I’m dragging myself through’ is sometimes the greatest pressure we put ourselves under.
Its easy to underestimate the weight of our own expectations.
Whilst you cannot control every outcome, you can control your reaction to it. Choose to learn from your past mistakes, choose to forgive yourself, choose to accept your flaws. Try not to get lost in the maze of it all. Once again, in the words of good ol’ Tim Minchin,
You will soon be dead. Life will sometimes seem long and tough and, god, it’s tiring. And you will sometimes be happy and sometimes sad. And then you’ll be old. And then you’ll be dead. There is only one sensible thing to do with this empty existence, and that is: fill it. Not fillet. Fill. It.
And in my opinion (until I change it), life is best filled by learning as much as you can about as much as you can, taking pride in whatever you’re doing, having compassion, sharing ideas, running(!), being enthusiastic. And then there’s love, and travel, and wine, and sex, and art, and kids, and giving, and mountain climbing … but you know all that stuff already.
All the best,
fuckstudy

✨Thu✨- What’s your dream car?:
I don’t think I have a dream car, but if I had to choose one, I think it would have to be a Jeep. I just really like the aesthetic of a Jeep and my aunt has one that I loved driving in with her! However, I would hate to drive them doorlessly ^^;

i’m april but with string pumpkin lights instead of j fairy lights :^)
students as months of the year
january: fresh journals, black and white notes, bullet journals filled with motivational quotes, cold brew coffee, loves writing letters, finishes everything on time, a daydreamer, seems laid back but really they’re stressed about everything
february: doodles in the margins of notes, the person who lends you their pens, sloppy handwriting, loves motivational speeches and classical music, finishes easy assignments early but writes their essay the night before its due,
march: straight A’s, study playlists, the teachers favorite, color coded notes, everyone thinks they’re naturally smart (but really they’re spending every night studying), forgets to eat sometimes, hasn’t slept for what feels like years
april: open windows, listening to the rain and thunder, tea pots full of earl grey, a functionally messy desk, fairy lights, always losing their pens, a huge nerd, afraid to raise their hand in class in case their answer is wrong
may: cramming for tests, lives in the library, highlighters and sticky notes everywhere, drinks espresso, would definitely consider bringing their coffee pot to school, messy desk, if an assignment is due at 9:00 they’ll submit it at 8:59
june: late nights, smoothies for breakfast, hanging out with friends, takes notes on their laptop, minimalist, organized, says they’re studying but they’re actually on studyblr, tries to study everything at once and gets distracted
july: staying up late to read, learning new languages, focuses on the learning and not the grade, watches documentaries for fun, loves the classics, owns a thousand pens, takes studyspo pictures, hundreds of unread emails,
august: stationery shopping, getting ahead in class, iced drinks, spending weekends with friends, takes very little notes but does well in class anyways, a relaxed personality, healthy snacks, the master of self care
september: a morning person, new pens and folders, a perfectionist, audio records classes and re-writes notes, over works themselves, loves the smell of new books, competitive, “i’m gonna fail!” but ends up getting A’s and B’s
october: chai lattes in travel mugs, will study for three days straight and then not study for a week, snacking in class, uses washi tape and stickers, sleeps for eight hours but is tired anyways, terrible at accepting compliments
november: gratitude journals, mental health days, the baristas at their local cafe know their name because they’re always studying there, study groups, loves to travel but never travels, cinnamon in their drinks, trouble sleeping, sweet smiles
december: hot chocolate, wrapped in a fluffy blanket, says they don’t care about grades but panics when they get less than a B, to-do lists, tutors their friends, watches movies in their free time, vanilla candles
