Rocket + Achievement Headcanon

Rocket achieves so much in his timeline yet while he is clearly aware of how smart and capable he is and not shy to brag about some of his achievements (escaping 22+ prisons, designing his own weapons, knowing he's a great pilot ect) at the same time he has a hard time processing praise at his intellect if it isn't worded in a way that he feels he earned.

For example, complimenting a plan he came up for you he would accept, as it is directly complimenting his personal work and framing it in a personal way that highlights his cleverness in the specified situation would make him feel good about it. (IE: "That was a pretty good plan.")

An example of something that would not go over well is if you complimented his ability to remember/retain/learn fast or just complimenting him generally for being smart he'd blow it off or get in a bad mood because the compliment is aimed at how his mind works, not on how he uses it.

While Rocket has had to learn to embrace his modifications and fully enjoys exploiting his intellect, to him it's just an on going "Fuck you!" to his creators in using it for his or his friends' gains. You can acknowledge his abilities in how he's chosen to utilize them and he will take that, but if you're giving him a general comment on how cool it is he's so smart, good at math or how his mind is like a giant database for tech it will probably not go over as well because he had nothing to do with his own intelligence, and in a way the compliment feels more like its aimed at his creator than himself since it was their doing.

I think this is a big part of why Rocket has such a sour personality, is in a way he's afraid of people loving him for what he can do based on those modifications more so than just accepting him for who he is. Even though he loves his team he's still in part often worried that these ties are rooted in this, and while he cares for them regardless because he NEEDS that comfort in his life, to feel like he matters in whatever way, it's all he really wants, it's all he ever really wanted.

In Volume 3 we see him feeling fully embraced for everything he is at the end of the movie, finally feeling that validation that his friends care about him for who he is. Not just as some super smart creature who can build stuff, fix stuff, or come up with good strategies, but someone who is a person and a friend with his own thoughts, personality and soul... and he is ready to accept himself now too, which makes a lot of that bitterness of his personality melt away.
