It’s that time of year and as everybody loves a good list, here are my top albums of the year. It was supposed to be a top ten, but hey who likes confines so I’ve included eleven. If you want to listen to tracks from my choices click the link before each album for the Youtube video. I hope you enjoy the musical choices, even if you don’t always agree. Happy reading/listening and here’s to a happy new year, hopefully filled with more great music!

This week, at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre, a sell-out crowd gathered for the final event of this year’s ‘Carol Ann Duffy and Friends’ series. This special Christmas evening included jazz, poetry and a performance from a group of musicians called LiTTLe MaCHiNe.

As 2015 comes to an end, we can happily look back on a year that has done us good by music. Not the commercialised drivel of the UKTOP40 or MTV, REAL music. Music with soul and feeling! Here are ten albums – in no particular order – from punk to jazz – that I see as some of 2015’s finest compositions.

2015 was yet again another fantastic year of film, so I thought that I would look back on the films of the year I enjoyed the most, and then decide what I believe my top 10 are. This list is extremely diverse, which I believe just proves how accessible any genre of film can be if you’re willing to give it a try.

Once the Christmas dinner has been eaten and the After Eight’s have being passed around, you might be in the mood to snuggle up under a nice warm blanket this festive season to watch a movie or two. Thing is, TV can be pretty dismal at this time of year and unless you’re lucky and manage to find something to your liking you may just be stuck watching comedy acts from yesteryear (not that they’re bad). Have no fear, for Netflix is here! There are plenty of festive movies to get you into the Christmas spirit and here are a few of my personal favourites to get your started!

Firstly, when it comes to learning a language, it is important that we know the difference between three very common and sometimes tricky terms: first language, second language and foreign language.

Most band regardless of their success outside of their home city, always come home to raucous crowds at any home venue they play at. But not many bands have gathered the love and loyalty from a home fan base than indie rock band, Courteeners. Having sold out their 25, 000 strong Heaton Park gig in the summer, the likelihood was that the seven dates at Manchester’s O2 Apollo, as part of their winter tour, were going to be chaotic sell outs.

It is unfortunately coming to that time of the year where assignments and exams are on the horizon. For some, they are before Christmas but for many January is the time to hit the library like no other and eat, sleep and breathe revision! As a third year student, it is coming to the last stretch of the degree and the last rounds of assessments. So I thought it would be useful to any first or second years (even current third years) to receive some advice that will benefit us during the assessment season.

Visually stunning, emotionally devastating and expertly crafted, Todd Haynes’ latest cinematic offering Carol is a strong contender for one of the best films of the year. A hero of the 90s New Queer Cinema movement, Haynes has previously tackled diverse subjects such as glam rock (Velvet Goldmine), medical paranoia (Safe) and marital breakdown (Far From Heaven), all united by an exploration of the past and queer sensibility. It’s the same with Carol, a beautiful and tragic love story between two women in 1950s New York.
