No Love to be Found in the Empire Oil on Canvas 2024 40x32 A portrait of American revolutionary Phil Agnew- founding member of the Dream Defenders and Black Men Build. I’ve met Phil several times, and ultimately talked with him about a portrait while we were on a solidarity delegation to Cuba. Amidst a busy schedule, we managed to gather some reference photos at La Casa De La Amistad. La Casa was expropriated after the revolution from a wealthy Spanish landowner, and then became the Soviet Cuban Friendship house. We were welcomed as part of the house’s current role, providing meeting space for solidarity groups visiting Cuba.

He was a close friend of Che Guevara and an early leader of the Cuban army after the revolution and assisted with land reform before his plane was lost over the ocean in late 1959.
