In regard to Thor in Endgame, I feel like part of the reason so many are uncomfortable with him is that it’s like looking into a mirror and feeling called out by what you see. As others have pointed out, this is a very grim and real look at the overall effects of PTSD and depression that is surprising to find in mainstream media– and a take that’s far more approachable than Tony Stark’s personal history with alcoholism.

The difference here is that Tony was already caught up in the playboy lifestyle, and was acknowledged both in and out of canon as an incorrigible ass. It was real for him, but I’m off the opinion that Most People are Fundamentally Good.

And if there’s one thing Thor is, it’s Fundamentally Good.

After everything that happened, it’s only natural for him to fall like this. Thor too is one for hard drinks, but he’s always made a show of living up to what he was born to do– to be a hero, a leader, a King. Naturally, when he can’t live up to his own ideals, he hid from the world in shame and drowned himself in the easiest distractions her could find… In this case, alcohol and MMOs.

And, frankly, what mentally ill 20-something who has worked hard and failed again and again hasn’t done this? I can speak from experience that I have, and that this level of depression isn’t weeping prettily in the rain or moping dramatically in a corner.

It’s feeling unworthy enough that you can’t change your clothes, that you can’t wash your hair for days. It’s not wanting to be in public, so you unconsciously make it so you can’t even be seen in public. It’s over the top agitation over stupid things, like Thor bullying a teenager over voice chat, and being unable to spit out the words when you need to.

It’s fleeing when the pressure is on, and escaping from probable trouble so you don’t need to risk another pain, another mostly.

As a person with PTSD, depression and anxiety symptoms, this was too real. For once, I could personally relate to and sympathize with a hero on screen.

And in tandem with all of these is the weight gain, sometimes even in excess. The jokes everyone is complaining about can be a natural extension of this, because frankly who wouldn’t be surprised by this change? I’ve experienced the same– fortunately from a more positive angle. “There’s more of you to love,” my friend said.

Unfortunately, none of the other Avengers except maybe Bruce are really the type to openly say things like that.

And, the commentary from his mother? We’ve all dealt with that from time to time– well meaning loved ones say things that can be hurtful in their attempts to help. I’ve dealt with the same, and I’m sure thousands of others have too.

Once more, I find myself going back to the analogy of the mirror in this; we’ve looked into it, and find that we were uncomfortably watching ourselves.

That, I feel, is the biggest complaint about this. We don’t like seeing ourselves painted in such bold and frank terms at any point– finding it done though a hero who has long been idolized for his boy next door temperament was a step to far… Because suddenly he was real.

Too real, and no one wants a dose of reality in their fiction.

But for better or worse we got it– along with something to remember:

You are worthy.

You don’t need to be slim and attractive to be worthy. You’re worthy just the way you are… And that’s something we all need to hear.
