hey, i didn't know how to get this out into the wider japanblr area, but you seem like a pretty wide-reaching blog so i thought i'd mention it here! - huckleberry finn in japanese is an easier read with lots of kanji in hiragana and very simple language, (as it is from the pov of a young boy i believe) so for anyone looking to read actual japanese in longer quantities, (and understand it!) i'd recommend you check it out! :)
Thank you for the recommendation!
The book is called ハックルベリー・フィンの冒険 and I found a copy on Z-library if you have access there and want to read it.
This is a classic English book that I had to read in school about a poor young boy in the American south going on adventures. It would be interesting to see the Japanese treatment of this novel, especially since Mark Twain (the author) was writing a satirical novel and there is a lot of slang/spoken accent used in the writing.

you're getting distracted again. focus.
drink a cup of water, tie your hair up, pull on your comfiest clothes, get your desk clean and ready, print out past papers, set your notes out, turn your laptop on, turn off all distractions, take out your stationary, open your books, take a deep breath, and just start.

240408 ♡ monday. a fairly unproductive but still busy day!
forgot to set an alarm, but didn't need to leave very early. woke up at 8am to.... snow!!!!! なぜ雪をふりましたか?泣きたかったですね。
met my japanese project partner so that we could film our presentation—we had a lot of fun, and ended up chatting for an hour after we were done.
i practiced guitar in my lull and saw my boyfriend briefly in the lull before work.
i taught piano (3-8)! i love my job. but i am always tired afterwards. had a "double" lesson for the first time—it's going to be interesting trying to navigate teaching two young children at the same time, but i believe i will manage

🪻04.04.2024🪻 the date is so cute
• I studied Biomechanics for about 3 hours. Mainly just the intro to Clinical Gait Analysis. I made really rough notes in my ugly notebook cause I still haven’t decided how to divide the cute one. I didn’t even try to write pretty, I promise I can do better than that😭. I don’t mind rewriting them though cause I took them English cause the textbook is in English, so I’ll take the chance to translate them.
• We had an information seminar about writing a thesis and doing a practice project. I don’t have to think about those for a bit but I felt very motivated afterwards.
• I wrote a very short card for my friend’s birthday tomorrow and crocheted a headband. It’s a bit wonky at the edges and I just realized I could’ve gotten her a puzzle instead cause she loves those. I’m really rethinking gifting it to her but I’ll ultimately decide tomorrow.
All in all, I feel really good about today. I took a walk and had at least one nutritious meal and loads of water. I sat down and studied without doing my stupid ritual of scrolling on my phone and feeling guilty about not studying. My flatmate has people over so I couldn’t keep going but I’m proud of my progress. And I really enjoyed it.

240405 ♡ friday. had homework due, including a final group project for Globalizations we've been chipping away at all semester, worth a good portion of our grades. i also had three cups of coffee today, which is fairly normal for me except i was trying to do a caffeine t-break this week to prevent headaches AHKDSLFHSDKF
got a head start on some of today's project tasks before work (30m)
work! designed a new page for the website (3h)
japanese lab, in which we completed a written quiz and had time to start making our presentation. (1.5h)
lunch (30m)
lifespan development forum: the topic was on bioengineering genetic delays to aging. enjoyed myself more and spent more time than the grading difficulty warrants (this class is a joke, i've received 100% on everything!!) (1h)
group project work. this included writing my portions, editing others' portions, and formatting the whole thing! it's a magazine so there was a great deal of graphic design involved that no one else in my group was inclined to do, so i happily took it on. we submitted it at 11pm, and i had one dinner break at 6pm. i also feel like i bonded a bit with each of my group members. by the end of the night when something made us laugh we were brought near tears lol (8h)
bed (after roommates got quiet (1h)) 7h.... i dreamt about the project, and that's it. i'm more exhausted the morning after than when i was when i went to bed T_T

For the first few weeks of college I'd study with the pomodoro "study with me" videos. I think they're nice but some are 10-12 hours long??? That's toxic as hell. Kids, don't study for 10 hours. Don't even study for 3 or 4 hours straight. Take proper breaks (10 minutes is not a proper break), go outside, talk to friends and live your life. Move your body, eat and hydrate regularly, sit in the sun and do your hobbies.
A good grade is not worth your mental and physical health. Do not obsess over productivity

one of the biggest things I can advocate for (in academia, but also just in life) is to build credibility with yourself. It’s easy to fall into the habit of thinking of yourself as someone who does things last minute or who struggles to start tasks. people will tell you that you just need to build different habits, but I know for me at least the idea of ‘habit’ is sort of abstract and dehumanizing. Credibility is more like ‘I’ve done this before, so I know I can do it, and more importantly I trust myself to do it’. you set an assignment goal for the day and you meet it, and then you feel stronger setting one the next day. You establish a relationship with yourself that’s built on confidence and trust. That in turn starts to erode the barrier of insecurity and perfectionism and makes it easier to start and finish tasks. reframing the narrative as a process of building credibility makes it easier to celebrate each step and recognize how strong your relationship with yourself can become

Random writing tips that my history professor just told during class that are actually helpful
Download all your sources or print them so you can turn off your wifi
Give your phone to someone
Just. WRITE. Writing is analysing, you’ll get more ideas as you write. It doesn’t need to be perfect, for now you can just blurt out words and ideas randomly. You can fix it later.
Create a skeleton/structure before writing.
Stop before you get exhausted. It’s best to stop writing when you still have some energy and inspiration left, this will also motivate you to get started again next time.
Make a to do list
Work in bite sizes. Even if it’s not much, as long as you put some ideas on paper or do some editing.
Simple language =/= boring language, simple language = clear language.
Own your words. If they are not your words, state this clearly in the text, not just in the footnotes.
STOP BEFORE YOU GET EXHAUSTED. Listing it again because it’s easily one of the best tips a teacher has ever given me.

days until finals: 8
got a decent chunk of homework done this evening so i can spend tomorrow reviewing for my final exams. i struggled with my physics readings on four-momentum so i'll also need to spend some time going through all the worked problems in the textbook until it makes more sense.
