Would this RP accept characters older than Harry? Like someone from George's year perhaps? Although, I am not entirely sure how that would fit into the plot. I'm just curious because I saw there was a Percy.

Yes, of course! We welcome any canon characters regardless of age.

As for how to fit them into the plot -- really the only thing that makes it trickier for some of the older characters is that unlike the members of the D.A., they likely won’t have been coerced/pressured by the Ministry into coming for the celebration, so you’ll have to come up with a reason why they would either want to come, or another reason why they would feel obligated to attend -- but that shouldn’t be too hard!

Some general thoughts/suggestions:

they could be a Ministry employee like Percy (or a subcontractor like Penelope) who is here working the celebration

they could have been on the wrong side of the war and be trying to polish up their reputation (like Draco)by “honoring the victors”

they could work at one of the Hogsmeade shops or pubs and be a resident of the village already

they could come to spectate (the celebration is open to members of the public, of course! It wouldn’t be much of a party if it wasn’t!)

they could be trying to curry favor either with the Ministry itself or some other faucet of society and see this as a networking opportunity

DEAN THOMAS ✼ 1991-1997/99 ✼ MUGGLE-BORN*

Growing up, Dean always said he didn’t care about his birth dad -- and he meant it. He had a wonderful mum, a great step-father, and two little sisters who were alternately obnoxious and adorable. He had a family -- he didn’t need to know anything about the bloke who ran out on his mum when he was a baby. But then the war happened, and suddenly people were using his lack of lineage against him. Then the war ended, and Dean needed something to occupy his mind -- something that wasn’t just reliving the cold nights on the run, or the blasts and blood of the battle, or the way it felt to have his wand taken away. (Such a little thing, and one he’d only had for seven years -- how could it feel so much like losing a part of himself when those Snatchers stole it?)

His mum signed him up for a Muggle painting class, and that helped...a little. But the things he painted, that they called “so imaginative!” -- those things were real. And having to talk about them like they were things he’d made up, things that didn’t matter, hurt. Maybe he was a little angry at his mum for not anticipating that, and trying to get back at her subconsciously -- or maybe he was looking for something that would keep him safe if the unthinkable happened again. Whatever sent him down the path, he’s been trying to figure out who his birth dad was and what happened to him -- but now that he thinks he’s on the brink of an answer at last, Dean isn’t sure that he really wants to know. Coming to this party is a welcome distraction, in a way, but it does mean he has to put off the revelation a little longer. Maybe afterward, he’ll feel ready...

CHARACTER TIES:

Lavender Brown  While Lavender isn’t muggleborn, there is something comforting in knowing that a conversation with her means she’ll at least get some of the references. There’s also the fact that the more Dean does research on the wizarding world the more he finds that its a small one...and more people are related to each other then not... 

Ron Weasley  They always got along well enough, although Ron had Harry and Dean had Seamus and they both knew who came first -- but they were friends enough, even that one year when Seamus and Harry were shouting at each other. Dean didn't expect things to get so weird when he started dating Ron's sister (she's a person, not a broomstick he borrowed without asking!) but maybe now that that's in the past, this forced celebration will give them a chance to find the easy camaraderie they used to have?

Happy Holidays, Emily! We are thrilled to “invite” Dean Thomas (fc Keiynan Lonsdale  ) back to Hogsmeade for a little forced Winter Cheer.  We particularly liked how Dean was set up for growth in this application--not necessarily launching a career post-Battle of Hogwarts and still learning about himself. Dean’s roommate is: Harry Potter!

ACTIVITY ESTIMATE: I work on political campaigns and there is a race I am starting in January which kills my time immensely, but right now I have ample free time and can lurk/plot the whole time!

CHARACTER DETAILS:

FULL NAME & NICKNAMES: Dean Allen Thomas

BIRTHDATE: October 1st 1979 Dean is a FIRM Libra. “"The balanced beautifier of the horoscope family, Libra energy inspires us to seek peace, harmony and cooperation. The essence of Libra energy is charming, lovable, fair, sincere, sharing, beautiful and hopelessly romantic.“

BLOOD-STATUS: Half-Blood, although he grew up believing he was Muggle-born

* GENDER IDENTITY: Cisgender male (although I would like to eventually explore a world where Dean could be more open to referring to himself as agender or gender fluid)

* GENDER PRESENTATION/PRONOUNS: Fairly masculine, he/him

* SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Dean is bisexual, although he very only recently fully came to terms with this.

* NOTE: this does not have to correspond to canon, or to the temporary pronouns in the bios!

CHARACTER SITUATION:

OCCUPATION: Dean works at a sporting goods store near his house and while it is not his ideal job, it does leave him with plenty of time to focus on his art. This is the main way he copes with the last three years.

HOUSING: He lives in a tiny, tiny flat in Clapton. It’s about a thirty minute train ride to his home, and while he would like to stay at home, there simply isn’t enough room now that the girls are growing. Not to mention, he quite enjoys his alone time away from the chaos of his family occasionally.

SOCIAL STANDING: Dean still can’t believe that he is in The Order of Merlin, First Class, thank you very much. It’s a bit of a wild title, especially for someone that people consider Muggle-born. Dean is known as a friendly face, and will always be a friend to those who need it, but his name usually doesn’t garner recognition. And frankly, he prefers to keep it that way.

CHARACTER CONFIGURATION:

TALENTS/WEAKNESSES +Artistically inclined + Athletic, which made him a great addition as a Chaser on the Gryffindor Quidditch Team -Potions. He could never get the portions right, not to mention he thought it a dull subject -Not a strong leader

STRENGTHS/FLAWS  + Bright; always knows just what to do or say to cheer someone up + Huge empath; keen ability to improve others moods + Loyal like no other person, whether that be to people or sports teams. He is your #1 Fan - Terrible at making decisions, which causes him to go with the flow a lot of the time -Self-less, which can lead to putting himself second and the needs of others first. Also causes a bit of a self-confidence issue

CHARACTER HISTORY: 

FAMILY BACKGROUND Being raised by a single Muggle mother, Dean learned early on to dislike his father, Alexander, with every fiber of his being. His parents had married young, and he always blamed their split on that. Alexander was too young, he got cold feet. Couldn’t handle a baby anymore, let alone being a father. While Martha never gave him an outright reason to dislike his father, Dean was the one acting out about it. Looking back, it was probably because he was compensating for his mother’s own nonchalance on the subject. Why wasn’t she upset? Why wasn’t she screaming? He later realized that her spending hours in front of the television set alone was her own version of screaming.

They had been fine. Martha and Dean had built a life together, just the two of them. They lived in a tiny flat and ate tiny meals and wrapped each other in tiny blankets and only each other could feel the warmth. The introduction of Graham Richards into Dean’s life was not a welcomed one. They met at his produce shop, sharing casual flirtations down the turnip aisle. Nothing made her laugh as much as those cabbages.

As Graham started spending more time in their flat, Dean started coming to terms with the idea that maybe he wasn’t all that bad. He had shit taste in sports, sure, but he was a great cook. And he made Martha happy. Damn, did he make her smile.

It took him eight years to propose to Martha, and by that point it came as no shock to anyone. They were already basically married, having moved in together years ago. Graham was basically already Dean’s father, having helped him through a break up and always supporting him in his art projects. Veronica and Bridget were already welcomed additions into the family, and shortly after baby Sam was no different.

Soon his tiny flat became a spacious three-bedroom. His tiny meals became three-course dinners. The blankets became shelters for movie nights and a home for Dean’s stories from school.

Since his father’s death, Dean harbors serious regret for his treatment of the man he barely remembers, mainly because of memories he lost and resentment he held. He wants to tell his father he is proud of him. That he understands all that he did in order to protect his family. That he would have done the exact same thing. While he can’t look back on many memories, he will always wonder what if.

LIFE DURING THE WAR: Not being able to return to Hogwarts for his final year was devastating to Dean. He loved his friends and he loved Quidditch and he loved the charmed sugar spoon that he used each morning in the Great Hall for breakfast. The fact that he was Muggle-born should not have affected his ability to attend school, but he quickly learned it was for his own good. He would stay up late and write letters his father would never be able to read. In those letters, Dean promised he would get through all this. He promised that, eventually, there would be happiness for at least one of them.

Dean wasn’t keen on having to fight in a war in his home away from home, but like a true Gryffindor, he pummeled himself headfirst into the throws of Battle. Finally, he felt welcomed again in this world. Perhaps it was the rush of finally seeing his friends after all this time (physically there, if mentally in pieces) and seeing Harry—his old friend, his sole source of hope when no one would believe that there was a reason to hope anymore—do what’s right that continued to propel him forward after all this time.

LAST THREE YEARS

Dean chose to fully immerse himself in the Muggle world. In the Muggle word, they can’t force him to run away from his friends and family. He loves being a wizard of course, but his last year on the run really took its toll on him. He still wakes up with nightmares when a neighbor makes too much noise. He is constantly afraid of being alone, as he was alone for most of his Final Year. Dean doesn’t want to think about life in terms of goals because, to be quite honest, he really has no idea what he wants to do after Hogwarts. A small part of him didnt even think he’d make it this far. Instead, he has a lot of different interests and ideas, but nothing that is jumping out at him right now. The Ministry of Magic is urging those in The Order of Merlin First Class to follow the career path of an Auror. And there is a part of him that feels he could make a great Healer or Auror, and another part of him that longs to be a Quidditch star, and somewhere inbetween there is his desire to paint and draw for a living. The more he thinks about it the more overwhelmed he gets, so he conveniently chooses not to think about it. His goal right now is a lot simpler than that–if he is forced to come back to Hogsmeade, enjoy this festive Holiday celebration before he can’t anymore.

HOLIDAY DETAILS:

The Thomases were never big Christmas-celebrators in the whole Navity-set-and-going-to-church kind of way, but they do spend copious amounts of time watching Holiday specials that come on the telly and they have a tree with an unhealthy amount of tinsel. Dean’s step-father is a fantastic baker and Dean has a competition with him and his younger sister that involves cooking competitions and ginger snaps. His mother always ends up declaring it a tie because she can’t decide. He always valued coming home for the holidays simply because he recognized the traditions he was making with his half-sisters and knew that he wanted to be as involved as he possibly could. Being away from these traditions is enough reason for him not to want to go back to Hogsmeade, but he felt like he couldn’t say no. They crammed in as many of these traditions as they could before sending Dean off on his own.

OOC SUPPLEMENT:

SHIPS:  I will not lie and say that Deamus makes me weep because clueless best friends to lovers hits a little too close to home for me, but I am also open to alternatives! Especially when Chemistry and Drama are thrown into the mix! Also super interested to flesh out Ginny and Dean’s past relationship, as I feel like that was not explored enough.

CHANGES: This is a very tiny tiny change, but I do think Dean will be excited to go to Hogsmeade. I always kind of thought of him as that guy who would actually want to go to a high school reunion of sorts, and I think it’s because he just loves his friends so gosh darn much!! He was robbed of a proper “Senior Year” and spent most of that year on the run. As a result, I think that he is spending a good portion of his life making up for lost time. Also because the kid loves a party, and a distraction.

FACECLAIM: Truly having a tough time debating between Keiynan Lonsdale and Alfie Enoch. I would not be mad with either!

New Years.

But, no, really–we have some events planned over the next week or so and then we do have ideas for post-holidays plot turn. Now, we might be polling our players soon-ish to find out what is the most interesting post-holiday plot so if you want a say? You should totally join us sooner then later.

Reminder we review applications the day after they are received and we’re open for canon based OC’s… for those who prefer pre-mades we have 5 left and would love to have any of them mucking about Hogsmede with us!

how much can we change from a bio?

Like…pretty much anything as long as it makes sense/you can make it make sense. So for instance…let’s say you wanted to play Oliver Wood (and we had a bio for him; I’m using someone we don’t have a bio for because I don’t want anyone to go “oh well they said I could do x, so I guess that means I can’t do y” when probably you can this is just an example at random!). Only you don’t want him to be a Quidditch player.

Well, we know from canon he was a Quidditch player…but does he have to still be one? No, if you can come up with a background that makes sense for why Oliver “get the Snitch or die trying” Wood would go from being the boy who puts Quidditch above all else to being the man who doesn’t want to go anywhere near the pitch – which you could totally pull off! There was a war! Maybe after fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts it just doesn’t give him the same thrill. Maybe he feels like he should be doing something to help others. Maybe he was injured in such a way he can’t play anymore and he’s bitter and…etc etc etc.

So basically, you have to have major canon things still have happened…but where you go from here is totally up to you. If you can rationalize it, odds are very very good we will be in for all your wildest, wackiest ideas!

*Note that for our purposes, “canon” stops after the Battle of Hogwarts so endgame ships and other epilogue details are not something you have to take into account; neither are the movies or the play or Pottermore. There are things from the epilogue/epilogue notes/Pottermore/etc that we have used…but we don’t consider them binding. If that makes sense?

And of course gender, sexuality, and so forth are completely open for all characters! Canon might be heteronormaitve, but we aren’t!

tips for apps written without a bio?

Think about what role (if any) your character had in the war.

Whether they fought directly or not, their life was surely affected because all of society was affected both by the conflict itself and by the defeat of Voldemort; how did that affect them?

Has their life changed in any significant or material way since the war?

Beyond the war itself, think about what are they doing here? 

If they were a member of the D.A., they were “invited” to attend by the Ministry – but if they were a member of the D.A. they must be used to bucking authority, so what inspired them to actually come? Are they bowing to Ministry pressure because it’s easier and they’re tired of fighting, or this doesn’t seem worth the effort of refusing? Do they feel a sense of duty? Are they actually looking forward to the celebration?

If they weren’t a member of the D.A., that means that unless they live or work in Hogsmeade (or are a Ministry employee here on job assignment to help run the celebrations) they aren’t here under duress, but chose to come. Why? Did they want to see the celebrations? Support a friend? Cause trouble? Feel an obligation to support the war heroes? Want to show-off and use this as an excuse to climb the social ladder? etc.

Otherwise just make sure you’re basing your character off of what (if anything) is known about them in canon (ignore the wiki, it’s full of non-canon stuff; we recommend the lexicon if you want a source to check on things) and most importantly look for something that will make them fun to you.

Do you want to take a common fanon trope and twist it? Do you want to dig deep into straight-up canon and explore what makes this character tick? Are you intrigued by the way war weighs on the peace that follows? Do you like playing with the juxtaposition of magical and Muggle society? Are you excited to explore (or invent) holiday traditions through a magical lens? Do you want to just make your character super, super queer?

Can people switch roommates?

The short answer is yes BUT

Essentially characters can change roommates but it has to be worked up in-character and its not just a “change request done” situation. Based on the original post about roommates there’s a limited amount of space–it’s highly unlikely your character would be awarded a single room (and very likely our overworked ministry employee in charge of rooming assignments forgot someone and so someone who did (like Percy) suddenly finds themselves sharing!)

So it’s possible but highly unlikely. Best course of action? Start throwing any sort of incompatibility on the dash and have the character ask around for a swap to other characters and why.  

…of course, trying to get what you want could also go awry.

HARRY POTTER ✼ 1991-1997 ✼ HALF-BLOOD

Victory is sweet. That’s what everyone always says, anyway. And it was, for a little – but it didn’t take long for some bitterness to creep in. He saved the world, didn’t he? He died to do it, didn’t he? So why doesn’t the world feel saved? Maybe he shouldn’t have jumped straight from the Battle of Hogwarts to helping hunt down all the Death Eaters and assorted followers who fled; maybe he shouldn’t have agreed to go straight into the Auror Department instead of going back to school. But Hogwarts didn’t feel like the home it once had; he couldn’t have settled back into classes like nothing had happened (he still doesn’t know how Hermione did it, or even Ginny). He had to do something, and fighting the forces of darkness was what he was good at. It made sense!

It’s one of the few things that still does. When he has a wand in his hand, trading curses with some miscreant, he feels normal. Other times…not so much. Voldemort’s gone, Harry’s head is his own – but sometimes it feels like he’s still there. Not because Harry’s scar hurts or because he fears Voldemort might return; because sometimes he gets flashes of emotions – mostly anger – that he doesn’t understand, the way he used to when he and Voldemort were bonded. He still doesn’t feel right. If only there was someone he could talk to who could explain it – but Dumbledore is dead, Ron and Hermione have their own problems, and to everyone else he’s the Chosen One. He can’t tell them he’s having problems. Ginny might understand, but after leaving her to cope with her trauma alone at twelve can he have the gall to ask for her help now?

CHARACTER TIES: 

Percy Weasley - While Harry works with the Ministry now and trusts Kingsley... there’s always something about the Ministry which fills Harry with unease. This is no more apparent than when passing Percy in the halls evokes memories of Cornelius Fudge and Rufus Scrimgeour.

Luna Lovegood - Harry’s started to notice that no matter how off-the-wall Luna sounds, she’s right about just about everything else. Sometimes it feels like outside Ron and Hermione (and sometimes even between them) nobody understands him better than Luna. That should probably worry him.

PENELOPE CLEARWATER ✼ 1987-1994 ✼ HALF-BLOOD

In many ways, you couldn’t have gotten farther away from Hogwarts than the town of Swindown where Penelope grew up -- at least not if you were standing in her father’s parish. It took a lot of soul-searching for him to accept the idea of sending his daughter to a school for witches -- and if he’d known that her parentage would eventually make her the target of a monster, he would have balked even more! Basilisk aside, Penelope loved Hogwarts. There was so much to learn, so much to discover. They even played their sports on brooms! While she lacked the talent to get onto the Ravenclaw team herself, Penelope never missed a match...extraordinary circumstances of her fifth year notwithstanding. Even being prefect didn’t protect her from that.

On the upset, the attack merited an ongoing, if sporadic, correspondence with her partner in Petrification; they had more in common than just a few months frozen in the Hospital Wing. It was a relief, sometimes, to talk to someone else who understood what it was like to go from the Muggle world to the magical one. When Penelope discovered her father’s true heritage, Hermione was one of the first people she told -- followed by her ex-boyfriend, Percy Weasley. That wasn’t sentiment but practicality: Percy worked for the Ministry of Magic: and while Penelope was far away from Voldemort’s reign, she didn’t want trouble following her home. Better to get her blood-status documented officially just in case. If she’d known that would give Percy an excuse to rope her into this...celebration as an on-site mediwix, she might have taken her chances!

CHARACTER TIES: 

Draco Malfoy - Penelope is the only official mediwitch tentatively on staff but that doesn’t mean Draco has forgotten his craft while on Holiday and in a party this big someone is going to need medical care soon enough. If Penelope goes by Draco’s deeds in the war she knows exactly how he feels about people like her -- but is that true now?

Ginny Weasley - Once upon a time Ginny was only Percy’s little sister who once caught them snogging. That was a lifetime ago now, but it's hard for Penelope to banish the thought: Ginny and these other children wrapped up in a war which seeped in slowly until the Castle was collapsing under the weight. Maybe if she had noticed Ginny's troubles that first year everything would have been different. But she didn’t and now every time she looks at Ginny she feels inexplicably responsible. Shouldn't a prefect have done something?
