Temari took a deep breath waiting for her fiancé.
It was still such a foreign concept. She should have been anticipating this day. Arranged marriages were just what their family had done for generations. Marriages were business arrangements solely done to garner more wealth and influence. It had been the case for her parents. The respect and love had come eventually. Still, as much as she knew that it was going to happen she wasn’t prepared for reality.
After the deals were made and contracts were signed her father was strangely vague about who her betrothed was. He just assured her that he was from a good family and this was the best scenario for her and their family.  She wasn’t allowed to be a part of any of the proceedings. Her father and brothers were her representatives. Temari just accepted her fate and hoped that her family had done their best for her.  Her father was a lot of things and being a shrewd and calculated businessman was one of them. She wasn’t going to be married off to a family that wasn’t worthy of her.  In the end, whoever she did marry had to be enough in the eyes of her father and that was a tall order.
Temari took another deep breath before sipping her tea. Her…fiancé had asked that their first meeting occur at his home without any chaperones. It was a bit unorthodox but her father had agreed and so she’d made her way from Suna to Konoha. She’d been there so many times that she could name all the roads and buildings they passed.  She pushed aside certain memories that the scenery attempted to invoke. When at one time this place had been like a second home it was now just haunting scenes from her past.  She’d avoided returning there for years now but her destiny couldn’t be put off any longer.  They drove past the city to a beautiful neighborhood with large homes and the grandest one of them all was the one they’d pulled up to.
She was quickly ushered inside and everyone that she met welcomed her kindly. Excited at her presence there. There was something oddly familiar and comforting about this place even though she was sure she’d never been there. Upon coming to the room she was asked to wait in she was surprised to see a table filled with her favorite tea and snacks. Her future husband had done his research.
Temari tried to relax in the gorgeous room. It had a wonderful view of the gardens.  Warm and inviting it was easy to pretend she was in a different place instead of her fiancés home. Now her home.
At least her cage would be a beautiful one.
When she heard the door open her breath caught. The air in the room had shifted. This was it.
He took the chair across from her to sit and silently stare.
Temari’s eyes widened as she tried to maintain her composure.  This was a turn of events. Once Temari got her wits about she spoke,  “I can’t say I’m not surprised.”
The arrogant yet handsome grin that crossed his face sent a bolt of electricity through her. Years later he still affected her like no one else.
“You shouldn’t be.”
He leaned forward placing his chin on steepled fingers to bring them closer together.  He seemed annoyed by the space between them.  Temari wondered if from this distance he could hear how loudly her heart was beating.
She leaned further away from him.  “You’re right.  Given our families' shared histories I should have figured that my father would want to make our alliance stronger.  What better way than a marriage?”
The Naras were one of the most powerful and prolific political families across the five nations.  Her family had been there from their early ascent into power.  Providing money and clout.  The Naras in turn ensured that her family had exclusive control over the production and distribution of military arms and weapons.  A marriage between their two families would only tighten the stranglehold and influence that they had in Suna, Konoha, and across the other nations. The press would have a field day once news of their engagement broke.
Shikamaru noticeably clenched and unclenched his fist. “Do you believe that this is about something as frivolous as money, power, and political influence?  I could give a fuck about all of that Temari. I have all of that. All I care about is you.”
Temari was sure her gasp of shock was audible.  It had been years since they’d seen one another face to face.  She only knew what the rest of the world did. He’d made a name for himself while expanding the Nara name and influence.  The Genius Nara.  He was known far and wide for his political skill and was on his way to being second in command for the Konoha government. How he was doing personally was only garnered through information from his mother. Also, from shamefully stalking a rarely used social media account.  It hurt that after having become so close it was nothing but silence for years. As far as she knew the person sitting across from her was a stranger.
No, her fiancé.
Nara Shikamaru had grown up. He was finally taller than her with lean muscles encased by a well-fitting expensive suit. His hair was still in that familiar style but it suited him well. Where at one time he’d been awkward and lanky he now sat in front of her confident and handsome.
Despite knowing very little about his current life she did know that Shikamaru was considered one of the most eligible bachelors. Handsome, rich, powerful, and from a storied family.  He would be quite the catch.   Despite his status, he was never seen with another woman. No one had ever been found to be associated with him. Women would kill for the chance to be in her position but it seemed like all he wanted was her.
Shikamaru stared at her deeply.  Those eyes she’d known so well set on her sure and steady.  His heavy gaze left her speechless.
“You sealed your fate that night you kissed me. From that second you were mine.”

Royal Flush
Hello my deers!  Here’s a quick ficlet courtesy of late-night thoughts. Something sweet and silly because it’s a mess out there.  Enjoy!
Summary:  Tired of losing to Shikamaru at Shogi Temari brings something new to game night.
*
**
Royal Flush
**
Temari groaned aggravatedly while Shikamaru just chuckled at her frustration.
“I don’t understand how you keep winning.  We’ve been playing for years, you would think by now I’d have you all figured out.”  She pouted annoyed.
He shrugged as he started to reset the Shogi board.
“Have to keep you on your toes somehow.  Now would you like to start or should I?”
“Actually I have an idea.”  He watched curiously as she disappeared into her room and returned with a small pouch.
“We've been playing your game forever, today I want to play one from Suna.”  He looked intrigued as she pulled out a deck of elaborately illustrated cards.
Bringing this game to Konoha to play against Shikamaru had actually been Kankuro’s idea. For years now she'd forced him and Gaara to play Shogi against her to improve her skills so that one day she’d actually be able to beat Shikamaru.  He suggested that instead of trying to beat him at Shogi they should play another game. It originated from Suna. A game that he and Gaara could never win against her. The idea was pretty inspired and she gleefully imagined that future in which she finally beat the Genius Nara.
Shikamaru nodded as Temari explained how to play. The rules seemed simple enough.
“I think that I get it.  Why don’t we make it… interesting?”  He suggested as he took time to study the various cards.
Temari peered at him curiously.  “What do you mean?”
“A bet, the winner gets a… prize let’s say.”  Shikamaru replied in his typical lazy manner.
Temari carefully considered his suggestion. Shikamaru was a shrewd strategist. He only entered into situations in which he knew he could win.  That all too smug look of self confidence across his lips was annoying but distracting all the same.
They’d played countless games of Shogi and not once had he proposed a bet.  She knew him too well.  He had something up his sleeve.
Temari leaned into his space, her face coming closer to his.
“Is that right?”  She breathed her voice dropping to a whisper.
“Just a friendly wager.”  He certainly knew how to get and keep her attention.
Temari worried her bottom lip, an action that didn’t go unnoticed by him.   She contemplated the potential consequences.
“Sure, I’ll gladly take your money. When I win, 10,000 Ryo.”  Shikamaru could sense the underpinnings of nerves in her response.
He didn’t balk at the amount and simply nodded. “Fair.”  She was surprised at how easily he agreed to the stakes.
Temari’s eyes sparkled with excitement.  This afternoon had certainly taken an interesting turn. “And you Mr. Nara, what could the great Shikamaru possibly want from me?”
He took a moment to contemplate the question but the look in his eyes changed to one of mischief.  This got Temari’s interest.
“Anything I want?”
Temari knew that he was presenting her with a challenge. And damn if she wasn’t curious.  He’d never be cruel or ask her to do anything embarrassing. What was the worst that could happen?
“Anything.”  She replied, sealing her fate.
“Well I’m not interested in money.  There are very few things that I actually need…”  She paused waiting for his response.
“So if I win I get a kiss.”
He might as well have shouted his response.
Temari’s eyes widened at the wager wondering if this was some sort of odd joke but his expression hadn’t changed.  Could this be some sort of strange strategy?  A way to distract her?
“My kisses are worth far more than 10,000 Ryo.”
He grinned at her response.  Troublesome.
“Then double it or choose any amount you wish. This is your game right? What’s the likelihood of me winning anyway?”
He was baiting her, she knew this.  But she agreed.
“Fine Nara, you have yourself a deal.  Don’t be upset when I walk out of here with all your money.”
“We’ll see Princess.”
That damn nickname.  There were only specific times that he dare use it with her.  He must be really confident.
Temari dealt the cards with sheer determination on her face.  Winning money and taking him down a notch would do wonders.
But so would a kiss.
She shook those thoughts away and focused on their game.
They were silent as the cards were traded back and forth.  Neither one backed down, strong, stubborn competitors to the end. Even Temari had to admit that she was impressed at how easily he seemed to pick up the game.  Not that she’d ever admit as much.
They were evenly matched till the final hand.
“Last hand Princess, if I get this one I win.”  He looked far too pleased with himself.
“We’ll see.”  Temari watched as Shikamaru studied his hand, his expression revealing nothing.  But his doe-like eyes were determined and sure.  And it caused her to smile.
Temari glanced at her own cards schooling her appearance.  She’d somehow gotten the best hand possible.  No other arrangement of cards could beat it.
“I win,”  Shikamaru announced and placed his cards face up.
Temari studied his final hand.  They were certainly high cards, a winning set if she herself was not holding the hand that would win.
A beat of silence passed before she spoke.
“You sure did.”  Temari replied, settling her cards face down back into the pile.
“You’re not mad?”  Shikamaru was surprised by her calm response.
Temari tried to look unaffected.  “Can’t win them all.”  She shrugged, gathering the cards together.
She glanced up at him her eyes steady and clear.  “A deal is a deal Nara.”
Temari took a deep breath before shutting her eyes and felt him come closer.  His calloused hand gently cupped her cheek before rubbing his thumb against her lips.  She attempted to calm her rapid heartbeat, hoping that he hadn't noticed how her breath quickened.
It was finally happening.
“I can’t.”  Temari’s eyes shot open hearing his resigned sign.  She stared at him disappointed and confused.
“I want you to kiss me because you want to kiss me. Not because of some stupid bet.”  Shikamaru confessed refusing to look at her.
“Oh.”
He looked saddened and apologetic. “I’m sorry Tem, this was a dumb mistake.  I’ll head out.”
Before he could leave Temari reached over the discarded cards and grabbed ahold of his vest bringing him forward.  Taking the situation into her hands
“Trust me, I want to kiss you,”  Temari admitted honestly.  She could have easily won, taken his money and ended the night.  That wasn’t what she actually wanted.
Before Shikamaru could understand what was happening her lips were on his. Gathering his wits he pushed aside the game to pull her into his lap. His arms found their home around her waist.
New and delightful, kissing Temari was unlike anything he’d ever felt before.  It was something that he hoped he’d experience time and time again.  All he wanted to do was live in this moment.
When they separated with his arms still around her Shikamaru gazed at her curiously.  He could have never anticipated this.
“Next time you want a kiss, just ask.”  She teased him with a grin.
That was a relief. He'd rather not wager his entire life’s savings. But for a kiss from her it just might be worth it.
“No promises.”  He smiled at her sweetly, before he pulled her into another heartstopping kiss.
Temari had never admitted defeat before.  Never thrown a fight or accepted a loss.  This time though, wrapped in his arms, with soft kisses pressed against her lips she never felt more like a winner.
Next time though, she was taking him for all he had.

If you want the dirty version of this read Chapter 5 of Stalemate.  Not exactly the same but you get the idea.  Also, I based the amount of Ryo to Yen, so Shika was about to lose at least  $200 USD for a kiss lol (worth it) Take care babes!  I love you tremendously.

Happy ShikaTema (4/10)!
I had to post something for my babies on their day!  Here’s the first chapter of a modern AU that I’ll never finish.
Summary:  Temari is a top divorce lawyer.  Sharp, cruel and cunning her skills in the courtroom are unmatched.   Life experiences led her to have certain beliefs about love and relationships.  Could a certain stand in flower seller change her mind?
*
**
De jure
*
“You ever get tired of ruining the lives of men?”
Temari grinned at what she considered a compliment from her colleague.
“Do you ever get tired of representing the absolute scum of the Earth?”
Her male counterpart shrugged. “If they keep paying me the way they do I’ll represent Satan himself.”
“I’d say given your last client you already have.”
“You wound me Temari.”  He replied dramatically, clutching at his heart.  She was sure that it was more related to how times she’d rejected his request for a date.
“That’s what I live for.”
Temari was one of the top and most sought out divorce lawyers in the area.  Known far and wide for her skills and talent.
She was an absolute terror in court. Ruthless, calculated and precise. She always seemed to get the settlement, decision or outcome that she wanted.
Each case was its own kind of Chess match and she was determined to outplay her opponents every time. Beyond the mental challenge it presented she found joy in helping her clients get out of terrible relationships. The settlements didn’t necessarily forgive what happened, but it helped.
A success story by every measurement.  Shrewd, and cunning she’d established herself as someone to be reckoned with.  And she relished being in that role. She didn’t work as hard as she did to make herself small in a field that was dominated by men.
A lucrative career. The respect and fear of her peers.  There was little more than she could ask for.  But despite it all there was still ….something.
Temari took a deep breath walking into the familiar flower shop. When she was younger and just starting out as a lawyer she’d send her clients flowers after their final meeting. It was just a little extra touch of comfort after having to go through such a difficult process. It became a habit. Usually she’d just have an assistant call in the order but today was a tough case and she needed the comfort of flowers.
Her favorite store was just a few steps away from her office.  Family owned and operated their flowers and arranging skills were unmatched. She used their services so much that she’d even formed a working friendship with the shop's owner.
Instead of the familiar blonde she was used to seeing she found an utterly bored man staring off into space.
Ino had told her weeks ago that she’d be going away on vacation with her husband and that a friend would be watching the store for her.
“Oh you must be Ino’s replacement?”  This shook him out of his stupor and he straightened up to look at her.
“Temari?”
A surprise look crossed her face at hearing her name.  “Ino told you about me.”
“A little bit. She just mentioned that you might be stopping by.  She wanted to make sure that I didn’t scare away her best customer.”
“Still a chance.”
His lips lifted into a curve at the response. “Hope not, Ino would never let me hear the end of it.  I’m Shikamaru.”
She shook his outstretched hand. “Nice to meet you.”
“I have your previous orders on record. Just need to know which arrangement and the address.”
“We’re going to go with the 4th one.”
“That’s a pretty pricey arrangement.”
“Well it was a pretty pricey settlement.”
He nodded, entering the information into the computer. “So you just send your clients flowers after they get divorced.”  Ino seemed to have filled him in.
“If their partners had done it before then maybe there wouldn’t have been one.”
“Touché”  He replied, agreeing with the reasoning.
Her eyes shifted down towards a colorful arrangement.  “Besides, I might be heartless but even I have some compassion. These women have been through a lot. An act this simple, well, I’d like to believe it means something.”
“I think that it does.”  She appreciated the sincerity in his response.
“Here’s my question though.”  She stared, curious.  This was a very odd and unfamiliar interaction.  She intimidated the people that she came in contact with.  It took time for her and Ino to go beyond the basic small talk.  Shikamaru though didn’t seem the least bit wary of her.
“When was the last time someone gave you flowers?”
Temari paused before replying.  “Can’t say it’s ever happened.”
“Then let me be the first.”  Surprisingly a single large yellow flower was presented to her.
She grinned, taking the bright flower from his hand.
“A sunflower?”
He nodded.  “It seemed fitting.”
She was unconvinced.  “How so? My sunny disposition?”
“Maybe. How about we go out on a date tomorrow night and I’ll tell you why.”  He offered with a hopeful smile.
In spite of herself she grinned at the self assured smirk across his face.
“I’m sorry, I’m really not interested in dating right now.” The words well automatically from her lips.
Shikamaru’s face fell but he nodded.  “I can respect that. Well. I’m here for a few weeks till Ino gets back. Don’t be a stranger.”
“Thank you and uhm thank you for this.” The fact that she could be taken by such a simple gesture was absurd but her fingers were clutched carefully around the flower's stem.
He waved off the thanks.  “You deserve them.”
“Flowers?”
“Yes, fields of them.”  He replied without a hitch.
Temari stood there speechless by the sincerity.  This wasn’t a situation where someone was just trying to butter her up. She’d learned to read people quite well. This strange stand-in flower seller was genuine. “Thank you Shikamaru.”
“Anytime Temari.”
*
**
“Where’s the flower from?”  Temari wasn’t surprised by the familiar voice.  Her brothers despite having their own places would often drop by unannounced.
“This guy, Ino’s replacement at the flower shop.”
Kankuro looked at her curiously.  Her brother was becoming excited.  “Did he ask you out?”
“Yes”
The flat response wasn’t promising. “And I assume that you rejected him.”
“I didn’t reject him. I’m just-“
“Not interested in dating. Yes I know. Well if hanging out with you baby brother is better than a free meal on a Friday night.”  He teased her with a shrug.
“Hey asshole you came here.”
He ignored her response to continue.  “Come on Tem, what’s the harm in dating? Sure maybe early on it would have been a distraction but at this point what do you have left to prove.”
“Should you really be asking me that?”
“I date all the time. But it would be wrong to commit to one person.”  He explained.
Temari just shook her head annoyed.  It wasn’t the first time that one of her brothers had brought up their concerns about her lack of a love or social life.
 “Right.”
“I’m just saying, don’t let dad take another thing from you-
Her hand slammed against the countertop.  “Kankuro that’s not it.”
He just sighed and pulled her in tight. Whenever he or Gaara brought him up Temari would just end up shutting down.
“You’re brilliant Tem. Smart, successful and if you don’t want a relationship that’s fine but let that be your choice.  I’m not telling you to put yourself out there just for the sake of it but if someone happens to catch your eye. It might be worth exploring.”
She stayed silent.  She knew that he was just concerned but she didn’t have a good response at this point.
“That sunflower reminds me of mom.” Temari nodded remembering the brightly colored flowers that used to grow so beautifully in their backyard.  This flower had brought up some troublesome feelings.
“Alright I’m out.  I know you're stubborn but just think about what I said.  Love you sis.”
She hugged him back tight.  She had him and Gaara. Whether she ever found anyone else she’d be happy with just being the three of them.  “Love you too.”
Once Kankuro was gone Temari’s fingers gently glided over the soft yellow petals fighting back tears.
‘You’re my sunflower Temari. Always face the sun, beautiful girl.’
She shook away the thought of warm summers and even warmer hugs.  What was the point in reliving the past?  It wouldn’t change anything.  She paced through the large, empty house. Despite how annoyed she’d act when her brothers were over she always hated the deafening silence that followed once they left.
A buzz from her phone was a welcomed distraction.
“Hey, it's Shikamaru from the flower shop. I got your number from your client profile.”
A series of panicked texts followed.
“Please don’t sue me.”
“Fuck, please don’t tell Ino.”  Temari stared at the text message in disbelief.  She knew that she should feel offended, violated even but more than anything she was just curious.
“It’s okay. Did you need something?”
“No uh I just wanted to say it was nice meeting you today. If you’re ever free from your big important job I wouldn’t mind company at the store.”
“Ya know if you’re not busy. “
Temari’s fingers hovered over the keyboard ready to send an automatic rejection, but paused thinking about what Kankurou had just told her.  If she was honest with herself the temporary florist had sparked her interest during their brief interlude.
“I’d like that.”  She bit her lip nervously waiting for his response.
“Don’t make fun of me, but that made me really happy.”
She hated the smile that automatically crossed her face.  “You’re embarrassing.”
“You hurt me Sunshine.”
They text back and forth well into the night.  Charming and intelligent Shikamaru was an easy person to talk to.  She didn’t get along with most people.  Often finding them tedious and obnoxious.  He was the exact opposite.
Late into the night as she turned into bed she was surprised to see a call flash on her screen.
“Shikamaru?”
“Sorry I’m about to fall asleep so I just wanted to be sure that I didn't before I wished you a good night.”
She felt her chest warm at the gesture.  His sleep-addled voice was a pleasing melody.
“You didn’t have to do that.”
“I really did though.  So thank you for today.  Good night Temari.”
How long had it been since someone had so sweetly wished her good night.
“Good night Shikamaru.”
She laid in bed that night clutching her phone to her chest. The warmth and giddiness felt so unfamiliar but it wasn’t a bad feeling.
She was adamant about not dating. Sure that she was content with the life that she led.  She could have never imagined Shikamaru coming into her life.
It would be easier to break off whatever this was now.  He was a stranger, she didn’t owe him anything.  It would hurt far less.  But the idea of just walking away.  Of pretending that they hadn’t met and to ignore the odd connection that had begun to form.
Well, that seemed much more painful.
Shikamaru's eyes slowly began to fall close. It was way past his usual bedtime but he’d gladly forgo his beloved sleep to talk to Temari.
He recalled fondly when her expression lifted just a little when he'd given her that simple flower. Asking her on a date was such an uncharacteristic and impulsive act. Ino would kill him if she found out that he wrote down her phone number but this was all her fault. Ino had told him all about her hot shot lawyer customer. And had more than once mentioned that she and Shikamaru would get along well.
So while meeting Temari however briefly was new it wasn’t unfamiliar. Temari was beautiful, powerful and successful. On the surface it seemed like a charmed life. But the heaviness and sadness in those striking teal eyes told a different story.
He sent her one final text before he finally succumbed to sleep.

Love Struck
Ino stared at the elegant drink placed in front of her. She’d been staring off at a gorgeous painting hung behind the bar when the beverage had appeared.
“I didn’t order this…”
“It’s from the gentleman in the corner.” The bartender explained pointing towards a table behind her. Ino rolled her eyes ready to send the desperate man a dirty look. Did a move like this ever work?
She’d slipped out of the wedding reception once everyone had been just tipsy enough not to notice her presence. It had been the perfect wedding. Filled with true love and romance she’d never been happier for her friend. Chouji had always grown up with a touch of self-esteem issues. Never believe that anyone could fall in love with him. His new wife had been straight out of a dream. Their courtship had been a whirlwind. From a first date to a marriage proposal it had all happened in a blink of an eye. Still, seeing the two of them made her believe that perhaps soulmates were real.
And thus the Akimichi had spared no expense in giving his bride Karui the most incredible wedding. The ballroom at her favorite hotel had been transformed into something from a fairy tale. The food and drinks were impeccable. Chouji and Karui’s love story had been like one pulled from a movie that their wedding was held on Valentine’s Day.  Chouji was convinced that it was good luck.  That perhaps those looking for love would find it.  And Ino had smiled, laughed, and cried the whole way through it. It wasn’t till the couples’ dance that an unsettling feeling of loneliness came upon her.  Now that Chouji was married and Shikamaru would be soon, she was the only one in the trio left standing alone.  In a cruel twist of fate, she’d been the one to awkwardly catch the bouquet.  Single and with no prospects in sight the self-pitying began. And so Ino found herself here. Seated alone in a bar with gilded ceilings, high-priced alcohol, and pity drink from a stranger.
Ino turned in the direction that the bartender had indicated and felt herself freeze. Inky dark eyes regarded her from across the room, his hand elevated with a drink in it. She raised her own in a silent toast. His gaze on her was heavy as he watched her take a sip. She was used to the stares of men but there was something different about this one. Hungry and possessive, his eyes hadn’t shifted from her face rather they sought to see into her soul. She couldn’t escape and she knew that this time, she didn’t want to.
He stood up revealing a strong, lean body that was covered by an expensive, well-fitting suit.  She wondered how she could have not seen him when she walked in. There was no missing him now. He walked with an air of confidence through the bar to take the vacant spot next to her. The eyes of women following him to take a look shot a pang of jealousy through her. But he didn’t notice any of them. His eyes were solely on her.
“Sir, may I get you anything?”  The bartender asked but he just shook his head and they were left alone.
“Thank you for the drink.”  Ino broke the ice before taking another sip. Her throat felt dry now that he was standing so close to her.  How this man was affecting her was unlike anything she’d experienced.
“No thanks needed.”   He replied, his deep, silky voice caused her to rub her thighs together.
“Alone?” The question sounded more like a demand than an inquiry.
“Yes, I’m here for a wedding.”
“And they just let you leave. You’re far too gorgeous to be left alone.  Someone might try to take advantage, or do something inappropriate to you.”  She shivered at the way his mouth curved around the word.
“Is that what you’d like to do to me?”  Ino was surprised at her own fearlessness. She’d left the wedding just for a temporary reprieve but instead, she’d found something much better. This, whatever it was, felt new, exhilarating and this stranger in a hotel bar was making her experience things she didn’t want to forget.
A soft smirk crossed his lips at her boldness.
“If I was to do something, between us, it would be completely appropriate, Beautiful. And I promise it will only because you’re begging for it.”
She’d never once begged for anything in her life but she found that she’d gladly be submissive under him.
Ino worried her bottom lip as she considered what to do. She could easily walk away and return to the party. Forgetting him and what the night could have been.
But when he removed her lip from between her teeth to rub softly at the indents her fate was sealed.
“Do you have a room here?”
His eyes widened in surprise before his lips shifted into a smile. “Yes, I have a room here.”
Ino stared at his extended hand knowing this was another chance to make a different decision.  She threw caution to the wind and took his hand in hers.
In an instant, they were out of the bar and in an elevator.
The quiet of the elevator made her realize what she’d done.
The still-unnamed man leveled her with a serious look. His hand had taken a gentle hold onto her ponytail.
“I’m serious Beautiful, anything you want to do we will. The second you say stop, I will. No matter what, you’re safe with me.”
“Ino.”  She revealed her name, trusting him. She didn’t know what it was but she couldn't help but believe him.  That there was validity behind his words.
“Ino,”. He smiled saying her name as his fingers tangled in her hair.
“Call me Sai.  You’re in charge here Ino. You want to stop, I will.”
She stared up at him, those deep eyes drawing her in, and nodded.
“Sai.”  He waited with bated breath for her request, loving how his name sounded against her tongue.
“Kiss me.”
Ino’s feet left the floor as his mouth crashed against hers. His tongue pushed into her mouth demanding her taste. His hands were hot and possessive as they explored her body, savoring each inch he could touch.  She wrapped herself around him wanting them to be even closer.   She’d never had anyone affect her so much from just a kiss.  If this is what he could do with his mouth she couldn’t help but wonder what else was in store for her.

Head in the Clouds
Hello my deers.  I had some time, some thoughts and feelings so this was the result. Hope you enjoy it!
Summary:  If someone is constantly on your mind then maybe that’s where they’re meant to be.

Head in the Clouds
**
It was a peaceful and sunny day.  The weather was perfect for being outside and Shikamaru gladly took advantage of a rare day off.  Against the cool grass, he lazily watched the clouds pass by.  It had been a while since he could lay so listlessly about.  There was no room for leisure while in the throes of life, death, and war.  But he settled into a relaxed state easily.
He drifted in and out as he stared out into the high heavens. He thought about his friends and family. The work that would be inevitably waiting for him the next day. His mind wandered with no destination in mind. Until a curious thing happened.
The clouds above seemed to take various shapes. Unique but familiar, their shapes reminded him of a certain wind-wielding kunoichi. And despite how he tried to convince himself that they were actually different objects they remained as permanent symbols that taunted him from the sky.
Shikamaru reasoned with himself that this was happening because he knew what was to take place tonight.
Temari had mentioned it casually after work on their way to dinner. She’d been asked out on a date by a jounin whose name he’d happily forgotten. The announcement was confusing and surprising so he just nodded and wished her a good time. What else was there to say? Temari was young and attractive. Her brother was the Kazekage, of course, she’d attract attention.  This was a good thing. And they were friends. Weren’t you supposed to be happy for your friends?
He tried to forget about that conversation and refocused towards the sky.  He would be a liar if he didn’t say that this was the first time that he’d thought about Temari and not just while cloud watching.  It seemed that more and more simple things would remind him of her. Certain sights, and sounds, always brought him back to her. Temari was now the center of his dreams and it was becoming much more troublesome. It was becoming some kind of strange vice.
It didn’t matter whether he was sitting in silence or thundering chaos his thoughts would inevitably float towards her. What she was doing, how she might approach a particular situation. This would often influence his decisions and she’d become some sort of muse.  The harder he fought against thinking about her the more it seemed that she remained stuck in his mind.
It was becoming worrisome that he’d considered talking to Chouji about it. He knew that if he admitted to what was going on his friend would insist that he should just ask Temari out. That they should finally just become a couple. Everyone was just waiting for them to be together.
It happened more times than he’d like to admit. Those around him asked constantly if they were dating or a couple.  Wanting to be proven right.  That they’d foreseen the inevitable.  Shikamaru would just claim that he didn’t dare think about her that way. That they were just friends and to imagine anything more would be wrong.
It was a claim but not a fact. And to say that he’d never considered her as a romantic partner would be a bald-faced lie.
Shikamaru rubbed a hand over his tired face. His beloved clouds provided him no comfort. He needed a distraction.  Knowing that she was out there with someone that wasn’t him was making him anxious.
*

Barbecue with Ino and Choji was the best form of comfort. They were older now and spending time all together was more challenging but they always found a way. Sitting together eating and drinking made life seem simpler. Maybe just friendships were enough. But he’d already imagined what it might be like if she was sitting right there next to him.
“Wow Chouji, you’re pretty smitten.”  The said man grinned with a nod.
He’d just returned home from a diplomatic mission in Kumo and was delighted to share all the details of his trip. One of which was about a fiery, red-headed kunoichi
“Karui’s different. On the outside, she seems cold and hard to approach. She can be loud and mean but there’s a lot more to her.  She was…sweet to me. I can’t explain it.  We spent a lot of time there together and even though, in the grand scheme of things we haven’t known each other for a long time, we just get one another.”
Ino nodded. “I feel that way with Sai. We’re so different in how we act and think but when we get to it I think a lot of our values and what we think is important are the same.  He’s been everything to me since the war ended and through processing all that stuff. I’ve never felt so safe with someone.”
They sat there in silence thinking about how much their conversations had changed over the years. Everything felt more serious now. They knew soon enough their clan responsibilities would only become more intense. Who would share that burden with them was becoming clearer.
“I know Ino and I are new to this but Shikamaru here, well he’s been getting to know Temari for years now.  Just gotta cross that bridge right buddy.”  Chouji teased his friend.
He was thinking about his friends’ reflections on their new relationships that Chouji’s comment surprised him.  “What do you mean? We’re just friends.”
They both rolled their eyes at him.  They’d heard this argument far too many times now. “You two aren’t just friends. The three of us are friends.  You and Temari, you’re something else entirely.”
“And what is that?”
“Soulmates,”   Chouji told him softly.
Shikamaru waited silently for Chouji to elaborate.
“I don’t know. The two of you just seem inevitable. Since we were kids she’s been in your life.  You’ve gone through hell and back together. She’s just always been there with you. Sometimes I feel like she knows you even better than we do.”
“If that’s true, why is she on a date with someone else.”  They could sense the bitterness in Shikmaru’s voice.
“Because she’s stubborn and you’re lazy.”
He couldn’t argue against Ino’s characterization of them.
“You've never shown any interest in her so she’s probably a little scared that you’re not. She’s not going to make the first move here.”  Ino tried to explain.
“How can you be so sure that she feels that way about me?”  He didn’t like how this conversation had evolved but he needed their help.
Ino just shrugged her shoulders ignoring her friend’s crisis.
“It’s a hunch and just an observation. When she’s here, you’re together. She’ll seek you out. When I’ve hung out with her, her favorite thing to talk about is you. Temari doesn’t get close to people. But for some reason, a shinobi that she met as a child, who beat her during an exam, who she scolds, criticizes, and trusts is her best friend.  But that doesn’t seem like a good enough title for what you two are and how you are when you’re together.”
“That’s fine and all. but it doesn’t mean that she likes me in that way. I’m not even sure how I feel.”
“How can you not be sure?”  Ino demanded becoming annoyed at his sheer stubbornness.
Shikamaru tried to find the words to explain.“I mean yes, we’ve been through a lot together. We hang out when she’s here. I trust her with my life. I’ll think about her a lot when she’s gone. It’s kind of annoying. If she was closer then maybe I wouldn’t think about her so much. She’s beautiful, she’s strong and resilient. She’s honest to a fault but I know in her own way that’s how she shows that she cares. It feels like it’s been so long now that I can’t imagine not having her in my life.  When I think about my future, I want her there.”
Chouji and Ino let him stew in quiet. “Well, it sounds like you have some decisions to make. You two can carry on how you have been and remain friends.  But at some point, either she or you will find someone. Where will that leave you and your relationship?
Shikamaru sat there reflecting on what they’d said. Temari was just on a first date with this guy. It didn’t mean that they were going to get married.  But the possibility did remain that it could lead down that path. And if it wasn’t this particular person who’s to say it wouldn’t be the one after him. And if she was the one to move on he knew that he’d have to live still seeing her everywhere.
*
**
Shikamaru inevitably found himself waiting for Temari to come home. He remained hidden until he was sure that she was alone then made his presence known. If she was surprised by him being there it didn’t show.
He couldn't help but feel a bit self-conscious. She looked gorgeous dressed in civilian clothes with her face made up. It was less pleasant when he remembered that she didn’t look this way for him.
“Shikamaru, can I help you with something?”
“Can we go take a walk?  Hang out for a little?”  He asked hopefully. On any normal day, they would have spent time together. After not seeing her all day he felt off-balance.
Curiosity and concern were fueling Temari and so she agreed. It was obvious something was weighing heavily on his shoulders. He believed that he could suppress his emotions well but he couldn’t hide anything from her.
They walked together in sync. He didn’t even have to guide her steps; she just seemed to know instinctively where to go. Was he really that obvious? Or did she just know him that well?
They spoke with one another freely. The conversation always flowed so easily between them. This was normal and Shikamaru finally felt like he was on solid ground until they settled into their familiar place.
It was a specific spot in the Nara forest.  A singular place where the canopy of the trees didn’t block their view of the sky. How many times had they been there together? Either for cloud watching or star gazing. Or sometimes just for no reason at all. They would just sit, comfortable and silent. Together and away from the chaos of the world.
Shikamaru felt the question trapped in his throat.  Insecurity and worry got the better of him that he had to ask.
“How was your…uhm date?”
Temari looked at him surprised before shifting her gaze back to the sky. “It went well. He was polite and charming. I can imagine that we’d get along.”
“Good, I’m happy for you.”
Temari peered at him curiously. “Are you really?”
“What do you mean?”
She just shook her head. “I guess that this is to be expected. You said days ago that no matter what happened we’d always remain friends. And I’m thankful for that…”. Her thoughts trailed off and they sat there in heavy silence.
“He asked me if I’d want to go out with him again but I wasn’t sure what to say.”  She stopped again before sighing.
“Sorry, I must be tired, I can't think straight. I should go.”  Temari began to get up but he settled a warm hand against hers.
“Clouds.”
“What?”  She responded confused. Why did everything go back to the clouds with him?
“I see you in them. I try not to but you’re there.”
“Oh.”
His heart and mind were racing. “But it’s not just the clouds.  I find you in crowds and during my walks in the forests that I have to do a double-take. Before I sleep and when I dream. You’re there.  Even now under these millions of stars, it’s just you.  At first, I was confused and a little annoyed but I realized that I like that you’re constantly on my mind. That even when I’m not with you. You’re here.”  He moved their joined hands against his heart.
Now that it was out in the open there was no stopping him.
“When I told you that we’d always be friends I meant it but it hurt to believe that perhaps we’d only ever be friends.  I tried to hide it, wish it away, and pretend but I can’t do that anymore. Temari, it’s you. And whether you give me a Summer or a lifetime I’ll be happy for it.  Do you think maybe you’d like to be with me? That perhaps together we can be something more.”
Temari was worried that when she slipped into his arms he could feel her heart racing. Even worse when she felt him place a kiss against her head.
His admission sat heavily in her heart. The weight behind his words and actions and what this would mean made her stomach flutter.
“So you can finally admit you like me?”  She teased him with a grin.
He stared at her in shock, but she had always been more perceptive than him.  “You knew?”
Her hand gently ran through the strands of his hair “Not exactly, I just felt something… unusual with you.  You treat me differently, it’s nice and it made me feel special that you chose me.  I don’t even think you realized it.”
Even though he’d been consciously trying to hide his feelings, subconsciously he’d been making it known.
She rested her head against his shoulder. Her breath fluttering against his neck made him shiver.
“I think about you all the time too. It gets so much worse and harder when I’m in Suna.  Sometimes it’s like the sand makes shapes of you and reminds me that you’re far away.”  She relished in the way his arms wrapped tighter around her. A strong reminder that he was there with her.
“Growing up the way we did in Suna my brothers and I never really had friends. I’m not even that sure when you and I became friends. But it means so much to me that I never wanted to do anything that could upset that balance. At the end of the day, I can’t stand the idea of losing you. I agreed to go out on that date because I thought it might make things less complicated between us.  That we’d remain in this neutral and safe place.  I think though that we’re meant for something beyond friendship and it’s worth taking that chance.” The smile that he adored so much crossed her lips.
“And I think the greatest risk that I’ve ever taken was falling for my best friend.”  Temari melted when Shikamaru’s lips met hers.
Safe and warm she never wanted to be anywhere else. Shikamaru held her strong and steady against his chest. Noticing how perfectly she seemed to fit against him. He kissed her again and again. He hoped his actions said more than his words ever could as a hundred different emotions raced through him. Just friendship between them would never be enough, not after knowing how it felt to kiss her.
He knew that everything in life had its possibility of troubles. Sure this would inevitably change their relationship and it could lead to some dark places but he also knew that there was hope and possibilities. And that there were many things in life worth fighting for.
This was one of them.
Shikamaru held onto Temari, taking in the moment that had been years in the making.  Unspoken promises were shared between them.  They’d remain who they were. Their relationship would just be built on the strong foundation they’d made and it would become so much greater.
A sincere smile appeared on his face as he stared at her.  He could easily see their life and future reflected in her eyes and it was one that he’d gladly work towards.
“So you and me?”  She asked with a grin, hope, and excitement reflected in her vibrant eyes.
He smiled softly at her before kissing her gently.   That sounded just fine to him.
“Forever.”

This story was super inspired by the song "double take" by dhruv.  I've wanted to write something inspired by it for a while and I love the falling in love with your best friend trope.
Hope you're all doing well, staying healthy and safe. Love you my fawns.  Till the next one!

Where the Love Light Gleams
My deers!  Hello!  I’ve been tossing this story around in my head for a while and I finally got inspired to finish it!  It’s a follow up of my ShikaTema holiday story from last year “Please Have Snow and Mistletoe” Alot of things may not make sense if you didn’t read that story.  Quick reminder ShikaTema meet, they pretend to be together, fall in love, she leaves, he follows and we have happily ever after holiday style.  There’s a few time skips/scene changes so I tried to indicate that.  Anyway enjoy!

Where the Love Light Gleams
**
Christmas Day a Year Before
“You’re really leaving already?”  Yoshino asked her son, surprised as he hurriedly packed his things. They had just barely finished eating their Christmas meal together and now he was a flurry of activity trying to leave.
“I’ve had this meeting scheduled for a while and I can’t miss it.”
“You’ve been here less than 24 hours and you spent most of it on your phone.”  She replied upset and annoyed.
“Can you not be a nag about this?”  He replied thoughtlessly.
“Shikamaru!”  The booming voice of his father made him realize what he’d said.
He waited for his mother to explode into a tirade but instead she stood there shocked and silent.  For all her brass and bravado he knew that her silence was far more dangerous.
“Mom, I’m-”
“Next Christmas, I want at least a week.  I’m giving you a year to get yourself in order but I expect you to be here and present.”  He held back the argument at the firm look from his father and defeated expression on his mother’s face.  There was no room for discussion.
“Fine.”
Their goodbye was the lowest he’d felt in a long time. He knew that they were both upset and disappointed but he’d hope that they could at least understand.  The world didn’t care that it was the holidays or about family traditions.  Didn’t they see he was doing this for them?  For the Nara name.
It was a lonely flight back on his way back to the city. Seeing his family and friend’s festive and fun pictures online while he sat there cold and alone made him consider for the first time whether this was the kind of life he wanted to keep living.
*
Before Shikamaru met Temari
“Hello.”  Shikamaru finally answered the call that he’d been avoiding for weeks now but his mother was nothing if not relentless.
“So, when will you be arriving?”  At his mother’s excited voice he felt a punch to the gut.  She wasn’t going to be happy.
“About that...”  Shikamaru began seeing the bright reminder about a meeting he was scheduled for the very day he was set to arrive home.
Yoshino sighed exasperatedly.  “Shikamaru, a week.  I asked just for a week.”
“Of course I was planning to be there but…”  He grasped at a good enough cover to explain why he would be late.  Explaining that it was for a meeting would only enrage her.
“My um… girlfriend.  She couldn’t get the time off.  We’ll be there by Tuesday.”
“Your what?”  He could hear the confusion mixed with delight and excitement in her voice.
“Surprise?  I’ll be bringing someone home for Christmas this year.  She’ll have to leave on Christmas Eve so she can be with her family, but yes, we will both be there.”
“Shikaku come over here.  Oh, honey, I'm so excited to see you and this girl!  Okay, Tuesday, let me know what time your flight arrives.  I’ll talk to you soon, your father and I need to plan!”
A sense of dread settled over him as he hung up the phone.  He knew that it was a dumb lie but he couldn’t handle disappointing his mother any more than he already had.  She still hadn’t completely forgiven him for his behavior last Christmas.
His phone pinged a reminder about another meeting he needed to attend.  The girlfriend problem would just have to wait.
*
After Temari Left
Shikamaru entered his home long after the car carrying Temari had driven out of sight.  He’d left to take a walk and to clear his head but everywhere he went reminded him of her. It had only taken a few days but she’d permeated his world with her wonderful light.
The home that had been so warm and familiar the last few days now felt off. As though something was missing and he knew just what it was.  He watched an odd scene of his father comforting his mother.
“Yoshi, calm down, Temari is Shikamaru’s girlfriend.  It’s not as though we aren’t going to be seeing her again.  Maybe we can go out to where she lives and see her and her family for new years.”  Shikaku attempted to console his wife who had burst into tears.
“Sorry, you’re right.  It’s silly to get emotional.  She’s part of our family now, there’s  lots of things to look forward to right Shikamaru.”  At the hopeful look on his mother’s face he couldn’t keep up the charade any longer.
“Temari is not my girlfriend.”
Their eyes shot open wide.  “What?”
“I randomly met her at the airport on the way here.  I asked her to just fill in so that you wouldn’t find out that I came home late because I scheduled a meeting.  She’s practically a stranger.”
“Shikamaru!”
He rubbed a hand over his tired face.  “I know, I’m an idiot, and a liar and I really messed up.  I’m sorry for being such a disappointment.”
Yoshino could see the sadness and hurt assault her child and took him into her warm arms.
“Shikamaru, no.  You’re none of those things.  Yes, at times I'm not happy with your actions but you’re not a disappointment, you’ve never been.  I love you son and I’m proud of you, nothing you could do could ever change that.”
“What do I do now?”  It had been a long time since they’d seen their son look so helpless and confused.
“However… odd the circumstances in which you met Temari, you were meant to meet each other.  Sure it may just be a few days but I have never seen you this happy or relaxed.  This may have started off as a lie but it became real.  You can’t fake what you two have and shared.  Temari clearly means something to you and it’s worth chasing after her to find out what that is.”
Shikamaru paused thinking about how to phrase this but his parents had never steered him wrong.  “Is it crazy for me to say that I think that I love her.”
They smiled at the revelation, glad that he could finally see it.
His father grasped his shoulder.  “Not crazy at all.  It’s Nara intuition.  Your great great grandparents had it when they started the family business.  I had it when I first met your mom.  We just know things.   Go son, and when you’re both ready come back home.”
Shikamaru had a number of meetings and commitments that awaited him but none of that mattered anymore. All he could think about was getting to the girl with sandy colored hair and vibrant teal eyes.   The only one that had ever made him feel this way.
He was a smart man but letting her go was the biggest mistake of his life.   He’d find her again and then  he’d really be home for Christmas.

**
Present
It was a whirlwind romance not without its clouds and storms.  But despite it all Temari and Shikamaru remained solid and sure. Knowing that together is all that they wanted. Over the course of their relationship their families all interacted. Yoshino and Karura had become thick as thieves dropping ever so obvious hints about marriages and grandchildren. Kankuro and Gaara grew closer to Shikamaru recognizing just how much he loved and valued their sister. Shikamaru even began to look at them like his younger brothers. And Shikaku had become a father figure to them both.
They became another branch of the family tree. Right along the Akimichis and Yamanakas. And Shikamaru couldn’t have been more grateful.
Shikamaru was true to his promise and stepped back from his chaotic and hectic lifestyle. He found that lazy days and a simple life suited him much better. He continued to have some say with the family business and his own ventures but for the most part he was content and happy just being by Temari's side and helping her accomplish her dreams.
He began to experience life as more than just a string of tiresome meetings and nameless faces in crowds.  He had far more meaningful things and people to put his energy into.
The following Christmas they all spent together. Temari’s family was brought into the fold.
“Welcome to our home!”  Yohsino was all too happy to welcome Temari’s family at the door, dragging them into hugs and boisterous excitement.
Temari and Shikamaru just watched from the side as their families melded into one unit.  Their relationship had not only brought them joy but it had done the same for everyone in that house.
They overheard their mothers’ familiar talk bubble up about how Spring would be the perfect time for a wedding.  Yoshino had an ideal venue in mind.  Karura shared her ideas for the food.  It didn’t matter that they weren’t engaged yet, it was just a matter of time they’d say.
Before Temari could make her way inside Shikamaru pulled her away and into his arms.
“What?”  She asked curiously.
“Nothing, just needed a moment before my family stole you away from me for the week.”
Temari grinned and met him with a kiss.  “You’ve become quite needy Mr. Nara.”  She teased him with a smile.
He shrugged.  “Perhaps, but just when it comes to you.”
Temari melted into him reflecting on the past year and how much love and happiness they'd experienced together.  The memories that they’d shared in this home during this season just a year ago and she became overwhelmed.  She’d considered herself a happy and content person long before she met Shikamaru but now having him in her life had changed everything that she thought that she knew.  Shikamaru held her comfortingly as she shed happy tears into his coat.
He pulled back to look at her.  His warm thumbs rubbed away at the light tear drops.  It amazed him how one person could make him so happy.
“Hey let’s go hang out with the deer.  I doubt our families will mind if we’re gone for a little while.  Our mothers would probably encourage it.”
She nodded, taking his familiar hand in hers and they walked across the freshly fallen snow.  The world was a Winter dream around them.  For all the amazing things life had given them both, the sights and views. There was nothing that could compare to this.
The days that they all spent together were loud, chaotic, and filled with incredible joy. Karura, Kankuro, and Gaara were more than happy to be included in the various InoShikaCho traditions and introduced their own.
That Christmas Eve dressed in an even more festive and unique matching set of deer and cactus-themed pajamas they celebrated together.  And while there was a massive mountain of gifts among them. Nothing was more valuable than the love present in the room.
Shikamaru watched and observed the activity around him. Temari curled up in his lap.  It felt complete. All the people he loved in one room together.  He held her hand which was settled against his heart before placing a kiss against it.  There was very little more that he could ask for in life, just one thing was missing. And like an impatient child, he’d have to wait for Christmas morning.
*
**
Temari woke up to a warm hand rubbing her back.  She nuzzled into Shikamaru’s chest as he sleepily greeted her good morning.
She couldn’t help but think about this moment last Christmas.  Waking up that morning home and alone, questioning whether she’d actually met Shikamaru.  Not having him next to her had been the most disappointing Christmas morning.  She prayed that she’d never had to experience that again.
“Merry Christmas Tem.”  He whispered gently into her hair
“Merry Christmas Shikamaru.”
They held one another in comfortable silence.  Peaceful and warm there was nowhere in the world that could compare.
“Did I ever tell you about this dream I had?”  She looked at him curiously and shook her head.
“Before I let the madness of the world consume me I thought of this scenario in my head. About what my Christmases would look like in the future.  Despite everything I always went back to this.”  His face became thoughtful and contemplative.
“I’d think about waking up on Christmas day hearing little feet outside of my room.  A kid who looked just like me and one that looked just like her mother would wake me up demanding that I go downstairs because Santa had come.  They’d tell me excitedly about how he’d eaten the milk and cookies they’d left out.  That there was a mountain of presents waiting for them.  I’d pull them into a big hug, and promise to be right there and that they had to wait to open their first gift.  They’d run out loud and impatient.  Then I’d roll over and laying there next to me would be the most beautiful woman that I'd ever seen.  Someone who was smart, strong, caring, and mine.  And everything would be okay.  I had this image in my head of what life could be but it was incomplete until I met you at an airport gate in the middle of a blizzard.  And at that moment, I saw it.”  His eyes held hers. The emotion and hope in them took her breath away.
“Temari, you’re my Christmas morning.”
She felt herself choking up as she pictured that moment he’d so beautifully described in her head.  And it was so easy to believe that it could happen.
“And if you’ll let me, I’ll spend the rest of our lives making you just as happy as you’ve made me. I’ll never need another gift as long as I have you. Temari, will you marry me?”
“Yes.”  Temari breathlessly replied before launching herself into his arms, a crying but happy mess.  Shikamaru held her, feeling tears appear in his eyes.  He’d experienced a level of peace he’d never known the moment his ring was placed on her finger. The success, accolades, and things he’d accomplished paled in comparison to this moment.  And very few would ever measure up to what this event held.
They’d tell their families eventually but for now, this was a moment just for them.  Another happy memory to add.  Proof that magic and miracles could happen.

Delivered
Hello my pretty flowers!  I’ve missed you all.  I’ve been in a Sai/Ino mood so here’s a quick little ficlet from me.  Enjoy!
Summary: After a horrific mission gone wrong Sai becomes closed off and reclusive.  Ino takes it upon herself to bring him some light.

Delivered
**
Ino adjusted her hair before bidding her father a quick goodbye. The flower shop had begun to introduce flower delivery and while it wasn’t what she typically did she offered to fulfill today’s deliveries. She enjoyed going to the village to drop off these little bouquets of joy. Today’s last stop was a special one though.
On her way to her final delivery, her steps felt heavy.  Ino hoped that her appearance at his home wouldn’t be too alarming.  She’d heard about the mission and while she was thankful that Sai had returned home in one piece she’d heard just how badly he’d been injured. So much so that Kakashi removed him from active duty.   The details of the mission were highly classified so she could only speculate as to what happened.  But for something to affect a former Root member so drastically, it must have been bad.
She’d tried multiple times to see him at the hospital but he’d refused any visitors. When he was finally allowed to return home that was where he stayed unwilling to leave and did not allow anyone to see him. She was not going to give up though.
The outside of his home was beautiful. There was a well-maintained garden and trees that provided a reprieve from the sun. Realizing that this was the first time she’d ever seen his home showed just how much she still had to learn about him. It seemed like a shadow loomed over the house.  The shutters and blinds were tightly closed not allowing for light or anyone to come inside.
Taking a breath she knocked on the door.  It was met with silence so she made another attempt.
“Go away.”
“Sai, Sai it’s me Ino. I just have a delivery for you.”
“What? I didn’t order anything.”  She could sense the irritation in his response.
“I know but, please.”  Sai didn’t know whether it was genuine curiosity or the slight pleading in her voice but he met her at the door just opening it slightly sure to remain in the dark.  She could only see half of his face clouded by shadows.
Ino held out a beautiful arrangement of purple flowers. Meticulously ordered and set, bright and lovely it reminded him of the girl making the delivery.
Confused and a little taken aback, he shook his head. “I didn’t order flowers.”
“It’s just something small, from me.  I wanted to see you, and …well if you need anything please let me know.”
Without giving him an opportunity to refuse the gift she pushed the arrangement into his chest. He caught it before it could fall.
He sighed at the beautiful but invasive blonde. “Ino, you didn’t have to do this.”
“I know that I didn’t.  I wanted to.”  When he didn’t respond she continued.
“Sai, you don’t have to tell me what happened during your mission. You don’t have to say anything at all but I’m here for you and it’s not just me. Your team, your friends. We’re all here for you.  You’re not alone anymore, don’t forget that.”
He felt her sincere words resonate within him.  She was right, of course she was. But he had so many routines and habits that he still needed to break.  And relying on others was something he still needed to learn
“Thank you, and uhm thank you for these I guess.”
“Of course.”  She felt a smile cross her face at his sincerity.
“Hopefully I’ll see you soon.”  She waved making her exit and he watched carefully till he couldn’t see her anymore. Those precious flowers she’d given him clutched tightly against his chest.
He placed the flowers on the table near his art supplies. Their vibrant colors brought a little life into the dark space.
Sai had lived through trauma, violence, and war. He was familiar with the pain it brought. This particular mission had affected him like no other. Sure he had survived but he’d been left with not only physical but mental scars.  He tried to shake away the intrusive thoughts.
He sat in front of a blank canvas, his eyes still set on the vibrant bouquet. His team, teachers, and friends had all come to see him but he’d rebuffed their attempts. Ino had gotten the closest. This was the most light that he’d felt in weeks.
His hands automatically began to move across the white canvas filling it with bright colors. He hadn’t created anything for a while now but he felt different. As though Ino had taken the heaviness that had been sitting on his chest with her.
Hours later he stared at the completed painting feeling a sense of accomplishment. Colors filled the cracks in his skin.  Creating again felt like being back on solid ground. And a beautiful girl with a handful of flowers was to thank for that.
He made a decision and dialed a number.
“Hello, I’d like to make an order for delivery.”
~
This went on for a few weeks. Sai would order flowers and Ino would deliver them.  Sometimes they were grander arrangements, other times simple bouquets.  While she dropped off the flowers Sai remained hidden inside his house behind the door but he greeted her far more kindly.  He was willing to talk to her more each time. She’d sometimes bring him different treats. Small things she learned that he enjoyed and ones that she did.  Little by little, despite the space he wanted to make with the world, they became closer.
Sai didn’t know if he could truly ever express how much her quick visits meant to him.  There were so very few things that brought him peace or joy, but she did.  The happiness she gave him during those small interactions was enough to get him to the next day, to strengthen and encourage him. So much so that he’d even begun to reach out to his team.  But as much as he wished for more he didn’t think that it was possible.  Ino deserved light, someone that could offer far more, but he couldn’t let her go.  So for now he’d live in this limbo.  Enjoying the light as long as he could.

“You got a complaint yesterday.”
Ino was taken aback by the information shared with her the second she walked into the flower shop.
“What?  From who?”
“A grumpy Shinobi who was upset that his flowers weren't delivered by a certain blonde. I don’t know who he talked to but I guess you’re the only one he’ll accept deliveries from.”  She mused, eyeing Ino with a grin.  Everyone knew that Ino was making these special deliveries.
Speaking of which, here.”  She handed her a gorgeous assortment of roses.
“He’s expecting them.”  Ino sighed but nodded, taking the flowers in her hands.
Still, Ino could admit that not seeing him yesterday was disappointing. As short as their interactions might have been they were still one of the most enjoyable parts of her day. They were small, imperceptible changes but she saw him opening up to her. The blinds were not closed as tightly. Some of the arrangements he’d ordered sat on the window sill. Glimmers of light seem to appear in his eyes once again.
When she arrived at his home he surprised her by meeting her beyond the front door stomping his way over. Under the sunlight, she could see clearly a constellation of scars cut across his face. His rough hands took the heavy arrangement from her to place delicately to the side.
“Where were you yesterday?”  He demanded, but she could see the worry in his eyes.
“Hello to you too.  Why? Was there something wrong with the delivery?”
He nodded.  “Yes, I waited for hours and when my order finally arrived it wasn’t you.”
“Sai that’s not a reason to be upset.”
He knew that he’d overreacted but he’d been genuinely concerned.  “You said that you were going to be coming back and when you hadn’t I panicked.  I got worried about whether you were okay so I called the store.  And when they told me that you weren’t making deliveries I assumed that I had somehow upset you.”
“Sai, you can’t assume such things. Besides, I'll let you know if I am upset.  I got pulled for a mission yesterday so I couldn’t come. I should have let you know.”  She appreciated how concerned he’d been about her but at the same time, he couldn’t just expect her to ignore her other responsibilities.
A soft smile crossed her lips.  “You can just ask me to come by. You don’t need to keep ordering flowers.”
She noticed the slight flush that crossed his cheeks.  “I…I thought that this would be the only way that you’d continue to come see me.” He admitted looking down.
Her heart broke for him, she knew just a little about his history but she didn’t know how deeply his scars ran.
“I’ll be honest.”  He looked at her confused and worried as she avoided his gaze.
“I don’t do flower deliveries. When I brought them to you that first day it was only my third time making deliveries. The other times I’ve come here was only to bring you your flowers.”
The admission floored him. Making him feel special and chosen.  Before he could stop himself he asked the question that had been hanging over his head for weeks.
“Why do this? I’m not your teammate, before this, we hardly interacted. What have I done to deserve your kindness or attention.”
When she tried to reach for his hand he tensed up but allowed her to take it in her gentle grasp. “Sai, you don’t have to do anything to deserve those things. Relationships aren’t transactional. I do this because I genuinely care about you, because you’re a member of the Leaf, because you’re my friend but especially because I know you’re hurt. What kind of person would I be if I didn’t try to help?  Besides, I like seeing and talking to you. I enjoy being around you.”
He looked at her, the sincerity in those sky blue eyes catching his breath. “I’d like to keep seeing you, and not just within this context. Perhaps this weekend? I’ll cook for you.”
He knew that this was a big step. He would not only have to venture out into the village for supplies and he hadn’t had a guest in his home for a while now.  But it gave him some hope that perhaps if he was willing to make these leaps she’d accept him as broken and bruised as he was.
“I’d like that.”
She looked behind him, the door that he’d kept so tightly locked up burst open flooding his home in light. The scars he’d tried to hide from her and everyone so strikingly on display under the sun. When he felt her hand reach up to gently touch those marks seared across his neck he’d realized what he’d done. He was open and vulnerable but it felt okay because she was there with him.
“I was so relieved to see you.  I didn’t think.  Getting to you was more important.”  He admitted placing a kiss against her palm.
She felt tears appear in her eyes. Relief and hope settled over both of them.
He picked up the arrangement he’d placed to the side to hand them to her.
“These were actually meant for you.”  He admitted and knew that he’d do anything to keep that smile on her face.
“You know, despite working at a flower store no one has actually given me flowers before.”  Ino mused.  She had a feeling that she was destined for many more.
“I don’t know if you have other plans but perhaps you’d like to come in?”  The idea of waiting even just a few more days to see her felt maddening.
She nodded and laced her fingers with his before making their way inside.  Healing wasn’t easy.  They both had their own demons to fight but it was possible and worth it.   Individually they were strong but together they were a force of nature.

I love this couple and the Yamanakas so much.  I might write a follow-up about their date together/ some sweet smutty stuff but for now, consider this complete.  I hope that you all are doing well.  I love you and see you soon!
