early bird
Jason might’ve had a homefield advantage when it came to Crime Alley, but he was under no impression that the streets he remembered as a child were the same as they were today.  Hell, even the streets he’d patrolled as Robin wouldn’t be the same.  If he wanted to take over, he needed to get the lay of the land—where the gangs were, who was calling the shots, who was unhappy about it.
And where the Bats were.
The Red Hood was going to make his big debut after he knew who all the players were.  Right now, Jason was skulking around in all-black gear, armor on, armed with blades instead of guns.  He didn’t plan on killing anyone.  Not yet.
But Jason felt uneasy almost instantly.
The whole city seemed to be holding its breath, the way it did after a major Rogue attack.  Jason had kept up with news of Gotham’s freakshow gallery, and there had been nothing for months.  Plenty of crime, but the big name players were lying low.  There should be no reason for people to act like they’d just gone through a fear toxin outbreak.
Jason was feeling very uneasy indeed.
The first inkling he had that something was off was the goons on the street.  While the gangs in Crime Alley changed territory like a penny changed hands, Jason had gotten used to seeing a few familiar faces.  Now, there were no familiar faces, only full-face masks and a lingering sense of malaise.
The second clue that something was wrong was the aftermath of destruction.  Gotham was a shit place for infrastructure at the best of times, but usually there wasn’t rubble lying on the streets, cordoned off by tattered tape, or gutted-out hollows of burnt buildings.  It looked like a full-scale war had erupted on the island.
And the last thing Jason needed to finish the creeping sense of something’s not right was the glimpse he’d gotten of Batman on patrol.  The Dark Knight swung through the air like a wraith and where Jason looked immediately for red-green-yellow—Replacement, target, how dare he take what’s mine—he found nothing.
No brightly colored shadow.
No joyful laugh.
Nothing but darkness.
Something was very, very wrong.
~#~
It took Jason a couple of days to figure out what had happened.  No one wanted to talk to him, not the semi-stranger nor the cloaked figure all in black.  Jason finally had to bare his face and find one of the working girls he’d known as a kid.  She’d been happy to fill him in, though she’d used a hushed voice the entire time.
A gang war in Gotham.  Boundary lines drawn all over the place.  Some loser calling himself the Black Mask and the False Face Society taking control in an awful five-day wave of violence and brutality.  And then…well, then the story got a little confusing.
No one had seen Robin since the incident.  Batman had apparently gone feral.  Black Mask was in prison with several broken bones.  Nightwing had showed up, permanently if the outrage from Bludhaven was anything to go by.  Word on the street was that Robin was dead.
Jason didn’t know whether to be pleased or not—the pretender was gone, but Jason was supposed to be the one to do it—when his train of thought was abruptly derailed.
“It’s just like last time,” rasped a girl with a too-old-for-her-face stare.  “Robin croaks it, Batman goes cuckoo.”
“What,” Jason said.
“The Bat was scary last time,” another girl shivered, hands rubbing her arms.  “You know he put Johnny in the hospital for trying to take some bread?”
“Hope he picks up another Robin soon,” muttered a girl with a resigned expression.
“No, Stella, you know they’re children, right?  How could you even say that—”
“Look, either we give the guy in a bat suit his emotional support child endangerment, or Batman’s going to become just as bad as his villains.  Who’s going to watch this city if everyone’s a freak?”
Jason slipped away from the group as the girls all began bickering, arguing over whether or not Batman needed a Robin, if Robin was even human in the first place, if they should just pack up and leave.  He didn’t want to listen to a fiercely indignant woman call Batman a child abuser while a darkly resigned one just shrugged her shoulders.
For some reason, when he’d made his own arguments, he’d felt…unique.  Special.  Like he was the only one who could see the truth.  Now—now he was remembering Gordon’s pinched face every time he saw Jason with an injury, all the news reporters that called Batman the worst thing that had happened to Gotham, the comments from Leaguers uncomfortable with child heroes.
Jason wasn’t entirely sure when he’d switched sides in the debate.
~#~
It took another week before Jason spotted Batman again.  His patrols were all over the place, no discernable pattern to them, but when he heard rumors of a planned bank robbery in the Diamond District, Jason knew where to go.
He arrived and found a nook on the rooftop across the street to watch the action.  Sure enough, Batman and Nightwing showed up moments after the alarm was tripped, and Jason watched them take down the would-be robbers.
Batman didn’t look crazy, his movements were as swift and economical as ever as he dismantled the operation, engaged the leader, and began punching him in the face again and again and again.  Jason stared, frozen to the spot with more than shock as he watched Batman pulverize a group of robbers for the crime of breaking into an empty store.
Nightwing secured his opponents and moved to intercede, trying to get between Batman and his victim.  Batman ignored him, and when Nightwing laid a hand on his arm to get him to stop, he flung the other vigilante back so hard Nightwing nearly stumbled into the street.
Nightwing didn’t move to intercept again.
Batman stopped when the man was no longer twitching, and dropped the body where it was, turning on his heel sharply to exit the scene.  Nightwing watched him go, and Jason could see the way the younger man crumpled in on himself as Batman walked away.  Hand over his face, Nightwing slowly went after him, every line of his body screaming of exhaustion.
Robin croaks it.
Jason’s breathing had gone tight and shallow.
Batman goes cuckoo.
In the back of his head, something was laughing.  Isn’t it a great joke, it said between giggles.  Isn’t it the greatest joke of all?

“Cass is the favorite.”
Bruce paused in the hallway, head tilted in the direction of the kitchen.  He wasn’t aware that anyone was still up.
“Definitely.”
Bruce was aware that Tim had coordinated tonight’s patrol as Damian was sick with the flu and Bruce was laid up with a couple of injuries—they must’ve just gotten back.
“She can read everything on his face and he never has to say a word—the old man must’ve been thrilled when he found her.”
Bruce frowned.  His plan to return to his bedroom was put on hold as he lurked in the shadow of the den, listening carefully.
“And…Dick is the next favorite.”
“Of course, he’s the Golden Boy.  Follows orders like the perfect soldier.”  There was a dark twist of bitterness to the words.
“Tim’s next.”
“No, it’s definitely Babs.  She’s actually good at her job.”
“Nah, I have to go with Steph.  Babs calls B out on his bullshit.  You, baby bird, melt into the shadows and don’t make a peep.”
“Tim, then Babs.”  When he heard the scratching of pencil on paper, Bruce realized they were actually writing this down.
“Then the demon brat.”
“Depending on what kind of scene he’s caused in the past week.”  A laugh, low and not very amused.
“Then me and Jason.  The outsiders.  Last on the list.”
A scoff.  “No, Blondie, then you.  I’m not on this fucking list.”
“Jason—”
“We’re ranking his kids remember?  Not the vaguely estranged undead mob boss that comes to bail your asses out of trouble.”
“You’re his son, Jason.”  Bruce was gripping the door frame so hard his dislocated shoulder twinged.
“All evidence says otherwise.”
“Well, I’m not his kid either.  So I guess both me and Jason are off this list.”
“You’re his kid, Blondie.  You have a room in this house.”
“I don’t use it.”
“Neither does little Red, and he’s the one running the company.”
“You have a room here too, Jason.”
“No, I have a fucking shrine to the fifteen-year-old kid who was murdered in Ethiopia.”
It landed flat and whatever camaraderie had been underneath the bitterness and snark dissipated instantly.  It left a heavy tension in the air.
“I don’t want it anyway.  Look what happens to the poor bastards at the top of the list.”
“What do you mean?”
“Cass—dear, darling, favorite Cass.  She disappears whenever anyone is talking to B.  Probably too painful to watch.”
“I hadn’t noticed that.”  Quiet.  Guilty.
“And the Golden Boy.  Trying to hold the family together while everybody in it tears it apart.  Timbo here, who’s hoping that if he slinks further into the shadows everyone might actually forget he exists.”
“Hey, I don’t—”
“Babs is stuck working for a boss who constantly undermines her, the demon brat doesn’t know if he should be listening to Dick or Bruce, and you, Blondie, for the great honor of being last on the list, are the only one of us that actually managed to slap B.”

hello it's still wip wednesday. thank god.
this week's offering to the gods is more of last week's pornless porn with feelings. still no porn, but even more feelings. chronologically, this snippet is before last week's, if you want to read them in order.
“I assume we can lift the ban on Tyler as a topic of conversation.” He coughed again and snorted, wet-gross and deep in his sinuses.
He'd been like that for months now. Comfortable enough with her to be considerate of her feelings. It wasn't entirely true to say he'd been the only one around, but it wasn't entirely untrue either. Elena could only be forced up for air occasionally. She was shacked up with Damon, grieving Jeremy, and obsessed with getting revenge on Katherine, who was shacked up with Elijah, much to Klaus’s displeasure and Rebekah’s aggravation, and therefore unrevengable. So, Elena wasn’t exactly a party to be around. Caroline dragged her out to a town event in June and for shakes at the Sonic in Waynesboro a few times. Other than that, Elena kept to herself and Caroline let her.
Expression, as Lucy explained when she finally returned, was a little bit like meth for witches. Bonnie spent the first few weeks of summer detoxing alone with her before she gave Caroline and Elena exhausted hugs and let Lucy haul her off to try to repair her relationship with her mother. Something about confronting past family trauma to help clear out her witchy pipes.
Stefan left town indefinitely. Caroline understood why he had to go. Of course she did. It still sucked. They talked on the phone once a week, and he texted road trip pictures as proof of life in between, but she'd underestimated how much of her time and worrying had been spent on Stefan and his needs. The distance between them left her with a wistful aimlessness, like empty nest syndrome, except her child was a centenarian mass murderer with an unbearably shitty love life.
Matt drank his way through Europe for the entire month of June, having wild sex with strangers, if Rebekah was to be believed. He'd started working again the day after he returned, jetlagged and irritable, and hadn't had a day off since. As much as Caroline wished she could command more of his attention, she couldn't steal his time when he was working towards his future, the kind only humans had, limited and precious. She was proud of him for passing his classes and graduating and getting his life together. She was even proud of him for running off with Rebekah and having the experience of a lifetime with her. It was all she'd ever wanted for Matt, even back when she'd thought she'd wanted him herself. For him to enjoy himself and be appreciated and not have to be so very responsible all the time.
And then there was Tyler.
“You know, I'm starting to think maybe you don't want to get laid.” Caroline crossed her arms over her chest and cocked her hip, knowing it did miraculous things to her cleavage and the line of her leg in the short, flippy skirt.
“That,” he pointed at his face, still wincing from the burn of bourbon in his sinuses, “was entirely your fault. What sort of heathen springs that on a man out of nowhere?”
“Well, I couldn't not ask! What was I supposed to do? Just walk in and throw myself at you?"
"Seduction truly is a lost art," Klaus mused, relaxing further back into the corner and crossing his legs at the ankle. The birds on his shoulder rippled as he made a brief, languid gesture. "Perhaps I wish to be wooed."
"Like you're the master of seduction," she scoffed.
"Oh, come now. I saved your life and gave you a diamond bracelet on our first date."
"Okay." Caroline held up one index and tapped it against her forehead, squinching her eyes. "Let's put a pin in giving girls jewelry on a first date. We'll circle back around to that huge red flag."
"A recent development. It wasn't always inappropriate."
"But more importantly, that wasn't ever a first date. That was an attempted murder."
He let his head fall back on the sofa and looked at her, heavy lidded and slow blinking, and with a distant, barely curving smile said, "I liked you. We had a pleasant conversation. I met your mother and one of your friends. You even gave me a kiss at the end. Is that not a date?"
Caroline tried not to squirm at the flush burning across her cheeks. It hung over them with a strange weight she'd never understood, those times when he'd let her dig her teeth in and have him. His one stolen taste of her.
"That was not a—” she stuttered and wanted to cringe at the childishness of it, “a—"
"No?" His smile broadened and he traced his gaze down her bare throat. "There's more than one way to kiss, sweetheart.”

Klaroline WIP Wed - fake sexy lamp au
Okay so like the basic premise of this fic is that Klaus finds out about Elena and in order to keep an eye on his doppelgänger, comes to town before Stefan and fake woos her in the guise of a college student. He just doesn't count on her extremely opinionated best friend Caroline butting her nose into everything and messing with all his plans and getting under his skin.
--------------------------------------------
It was astonishing what a thousand years could do to a place. The last time he’d seen the village that would become Mystic Falls, it had been a half burned wreck, a testament to the sins of fathers coming to roost on the sons. Now?
Well, it was no longer on fire, Klaus thought blandly, looking around the town square from where he sat on an out-of-the-way park bench. One could term that an improvement. It was disgustingly picturesque in that true Southern Americana way.
As he flipped through the file folder he’d had liberated from the Sheriff’s file folder drawers by a convenient deputy, he rubbed at his jaw absently, fingers missing the usually present stubble. Going undercover, at his age. The temptation to burn this town to the ground—again—and take his doppelgänger and go simmered pleasantly in his veins, except for that one pesky loophole: the ceremony had to be completed in the birthplace of the doppelgänger. From all accounts, that was Mystic Falls, VA. So here he was, blending in.
Was this how the average American youth wore their clothes, so ill-fitting? He hadn’t worn anything that hadn’t been tailored for him in the past several centuries that he hadn’t taken in desperation on the run from Mikael. It seemed rather ridiculous to complain of one’s trousers being too tight when your own father figure was trying to stake you through the heart.
Kol had managed it, both the too tight trousers and the complaining. Probably he should have spent the majority of the 80s daggered instead of doing enough cocaine to keep El Padrino in business, but his little brother’s terrible fashion decisions aside, he didn’t think they had ever stooped so low as to buy off the rack.
The jeans and t-shirt Klaus wore, along with the thin zip-up hoodie, and converse sneakers were designed to make him appear younger. Those, and the addition of a paint smeared backpack slung over one shoulder, seemed to be performing the desired result: before he’d compelled him, the deputy had asked Klaus if he was taking classes at Whitmore.
Which brought him back to the contents of the folder: the drowning deaths of Grayson and Miranda Gilbert, and the mysterious rescue of Elena Gilbert. It was clear the car accident was just that, an accident, but what flummoxed the good members of the Mystic Falls Police Department was how his Doppelgänger got out of that vehicle. Indeed, she had no memory of having done so.
Where in town, he mused to himself, would I locate the one person who could rip open a car door with their bare hands?  Closing the folder, he slid it under a second folder, flipped it open to see a paper clipped photo of a square-faced young-looking man with green eyes and light brown hair. An odd little brush of memory hit him as the man laughed, an arm around his shoulders, the sound of jazz in his ears, blood and gin mingling in his throat. Blink, and it was just a photo again.
A shadow fell across the page. “Nik, I’m bored.”

WIP WEDNESDAY
This is your daily reminder that there should be more Bonnie & Caroline friendship in fics, thank you for coming to my ted talk.
“God, I’m so excited for Tyler to finally be able to come home.”
“He won’t have to take orders from Klaus when he’s dead, that’s for sure,” Bonnie muttered. She glanced up when Caroline remained quiet, frowning slightly. “Elena mentioned he invited you to the ball? Why would Klaus do that?”
Caroline scowled up at the ceiling, annoyed by the direction the conversation had taken. “I have no idea.”
Bonnie stopped looking through the grimoire. “Well, what did he want last night?”
“I don’t know.” Caroline shrugged, a little lost, throwing a hand up. “He asked me to dance, we talked, he showed me his artwork-”
“Artwork?” Bonnie echoed.
Caroline frowned slightly, worrying her lip.
“Yeah, he’s an artist, I guess,” she tried to shrug off, like it wasn’t a big deal. Even serial killers had hobbies, right? She didn’t mention the drawing he’d done of her - nope, not happening. She scoffed, shaking her head. “I’m pretty sure interpol has half his art collection listed as stolen or missing - like the feds would have a field day if they raided that place.”
“So he asked you to dance, spent time with you, showed you his personal art collection…” Her best friend paused, slowly closing the grimoire, eyeing Caroline critically. “...like a date?”
Caroline shot up into a sitting position, glaring at Bonnie.
“It was NOT a date,” she hissed, slicing her hands through the air, as if to ward the accusation off. “There was no ‘dating’ of any kind.”
Bonnie’s eyes widened a fraction and she deliberately turned her gaze back to the grimoire.
“Sounds like a date to me,” she muttered under her breath, opening the book back up.
Caroline tried to push the memory of Klaus admitting he fancied her out of her head, something fluttering in her stomach.
“He was just cozying up to me to get to Elena,” she tried to excuse. Her eyes shot to Bonnie, pleading with her to agree. “Right?”
Bonnie sighed, regarding her sadly. “Is it really that impossible to consider that a guy may actually like you?”
“Bonnie,” Caroline carefully enunciated, “It’s Klaus.”
Her friend rolled her eyes, closing the grimoire again and throwing it to the side. “Yeah, obviously I’m not saying you should date him, Caroline. I’m just saying you’re,” she shrugged, gesturing to all of her, “you know, a catch. Any guy would be lucky to have you.”
Bonnie leaned forward, grasping Caroline’s hands in hers as she smiled softly. Touched, Caroline couldn’t help but smile back.
“Hell,” Bonnie continued, “Tyler doesn’t even deserve you after he left you for dead in the woods and then ghosted you.”
“He’s trying to break the sire bond for me, Bonnie,” Caroline pointed out, her glare half-hearted. Secretly, her friend’s fierce protectiveness warmed her heart.
“Even so,” Bonnie conceded, letting go of Caroline’s hands, “it was a dick move, one he made on your birthday of all days. You don’t have to excuse him all the time.”
Caroline sighed - Bonnie was right. She let her head fall into her hands, running her fingers anxiously through her hair. Biting her lip, she looked back up at Bonnie.
“And if Klaus does actually…like me?” she asked quietly.
Sheepishly, Bonnie smiled, the expression halfway to a wince. “Start growing wolfsbane in the garden?”
“Would that even work on a hybrid?”
“He’s part werewolf, right?” Bonnie shrugged, picking up her grimoire again. A wicked smile curled around the corners of her face. “You’d assume so.”
Caroline shook her head, grinning too as she pulled out her phone. “Guess I need to google where I can get wolfsbane from, then,” she said, like it was a great chore.
“Check Petco, maybe you’ll find the dog version of catnip.”
Unable to keep straight faces, they giggled, both of them doubling over laughing.

Kol is such a baby in this scene and I love him for it. Clearly, Klaus can't resist how adorable he is either.
Another reason to resent Julie, because imagine if The Originals was actually about the family becoming whole again...

list of extra af™ things that Klaus has done for Caroline in the name of last love:
leave an infinity diamond bracelet on her bedside table as a birthday present and discreetly watch her reaction while opening it by standing outside her window
invite her to his mother’s ball as his date for the evening and gift her a stunning ballgown to wear to the event
lead her away from the dance floor to show her his art and offer to take her anywhere she wants to go: Rome, Paris, Tokyo?
threaten to rip out his cheeky little brother’s liver for noticing how attractive Caroline is
almost get hit by a car while running after her to try and convince her to give him a chance and get to know him
draw numerous sketches of her,  burn them later on to try and get her out of his mind, and then start drawing her again because he’s in too deep
hold her close while dancing with her in front of her current bf and tell her that perhaps she’ll be ready in a year or even a century let him show her what the world has to offer
sucker a deal out of her to give her one of his precious hybrids in exchange to be her escort and date at the Miss Mystic Falls Pageant, where he can spend time with her in public and in front of everyone
somehow get the original copy of her old Miss Mystic Falls application and keep it in his coat pocket so that he could tease her about it later
spend the entire night digging 12 graves for the witches she accidentally killed even though he was really mad at her
gift her a gown fit for a queen and allow her bf to come back into town just so she could have the prom night she always dreamed of
leave her a voicemail while standing in the middle of one of his favorite cities, and talk about how much he’d love to show it to her one day
attend her graduation and vow to be her last love, however long it takes
give her the most sensuous experience of her life for several hours straight in the great outdoors (finally making her dreams of hot hybrid lovin’ come true)
promise to keep her current bf safe at the cost of his own safety because he couldn’t bare the thought of her in pain
send her a check for $3 million dollars to fund her school of witchcraft and werewolfry along with a gushy letter reminding her of his eternal promise to her
