The things I found it hard to like about Korra initially are the things I came to appreciate in later books. She had drastic character development over those 4 books. And that's important because her perceived flaws were so relatable and we all dealt with them. It was valuable to see how we could grow and change. She's so the polar opposite of Aang and ATLA fans weren't expecting an abrasive or disagreeable avatar. But having another avatar like Aang wouldn't have been very interesting.
Don't know why it's so hard to appreciate both avatars and their journeys.

Okay, I love Avater the Last Airbender a lot, but man. The only good villains are Zuko and Azula. So just hear me out a second. Zuko isn’t really a villain except for in the beginning, he’s just a struggling teenager who’s lost his way and is dealing with his trauma, especially later on. Azula, on the other hand, stays a villain. But it’s the fact that you can understand where they’re coming from that makes them excellent villains.
That’s one of the things I like about Atla, and also don’t. Because wow the whole Firelord Ozai threat isn’t really,,,, threatening. At all. You can’t really get into his headspace and sympathize. All you see is a merciless tyrant trying to set the world on fire, and whatnot. That’s just one example, a lot of the smaller villains are also kinda the same. (Oop just did the tags and found out his name is Sozin actually. Or maybe I got it right idk, he’s so forgettable that I actually can’t even tell or remember.)
But I will never stop commending Legend of Korra for its villains (well okay except for maybe Unulaq. He’s just a lil bitch boi. But he’s very fun to hate). In fact, the hard part about Legend of Korra is that the villains are so well done, that you agree with them. They’re right! (To the point where Zaheer’s speech in season 3 has so many good points that they refused to air that part in some places) They just take it too far. Season four is aptly named, cause the one thing you see in this show is that balance is the key. And it’s true.
And it’s sad that so many people haven’t watched the show just cause they didn’t like the look of it, or because they praise Atla so much that they don’t think Lok would live up to it. And that’s okay!! Hell, some people don’t even like Korra in the beginning cause she’s headstrong and pretty arrogant at the start. (But that’s the thing,,,,, Korra actually has a major character arc and personal growth that’s astounding to watch. They just compare her to Aang, or don’t like her cause it’s not what they expected. They don’t know if the show will actually be any good. This is me telling you now that it is)
The thing is, most of the people haven’t even given it a chance. They immediately write it off. (don’t come at me for saying this, cause it’s true. My sister and I have both noticed this many times, and in some cases had conversations with these people) Atla is a wonderful and amazing show, with depths that drag you in and envelope you in a little cocoon until you don’t even want to leave.
And Legend of Korra has that same depth. Maybe even more so in some points (in the later seasons). All it needs is a chance.
(Plus the music is so overwhelmingly beautiful, along with the scenery. And don’t even get me started on the animation, the crisp lines and shit. For a show that was made on a tight budget and trying to be buried, it still looks and is amazing)
(And I know it’s not exactly the same feel as Atla, but I like that about it. It gives the show its own feel and it’s own chance to explore the world in a new depth and light. To be it’s own. Plus okay that radio voice guy will never not be my fav he’s so good)
I’ll continue another point between Atla and Lok, cause I just tried to now and it,,,, well. I went over the limit and it disappeared. So! I’m gonna go lie face down and try not to scream cause man I poured my heart and thoughts into that. Have a good day y’all, and I hope you’ve enjoyed Atla so far! It’s very good!

The reason I love The Beach episode of Avatar so much is because it’s essentially the “what if super teens tried to live a normal life” trope thrown into the middle of an epic war story, that JUST SO HAPPENS to be from the perspective of the show’s “villains”
The writers saw an opportunity to subvert storytelling expectations in the most entertaining and engaging way possible, while STILL providing much needed character development for those involved.
And the fact that it purposely ends with the characters still being evil and cruel is just *chefs kiss*

Many people say that the final battle between Zuko and Azula was more symbolic or held more weightage as compared to the fight between Aang and the Firelord. I personally think that both fights were equally heavy, the former being more emotional and the latter being heavier plot-wise, personally for Aang and for the avatar. Yes, the final Agni Kai was a tragic fight to the death between two siblings, one who had unfortunately spiralled towards insanity and the other, with the help of others, found his path and himself. However Aang’s fight was tremendous both for his journey, for his sense of belonging with the air nomads, and for his responsibility of being the avatar. Everyone expected to him to kill Ozai but he stayed true to his principles, to his element and his clan while saving the world.
Don’t forget that he couldn’t achieve the avatar state before as he first couldn’t let Katara go, and second was attacked by Azula. When he went into the avatar state in that fight, it brought a wholesome feel to his arc. He had to let go of his childhood and fulfil his destiny as the avatar.
He was also the first energy-bender and for me, the part where he energy-bends is the heaviest and one of the most meaningful scenes ever. His spirit was unbendable and strong, and he wasn’t the avatar when making that decision. He was an airbender.
The last airbender.

The Avatar and the Firelord
I was just rewatching this episode and ahhh, memories. Anyway, this show’s choreography is really so great: Roku’s movements when he masters all the 4 elements are perfect there as well as in the opening of every episode. Of course this is expected but it also shows how he views the elements - 4 elements just like he told Sozin that the nations are 4 nations. They are peaceful when separated, but also powerful together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As opposed to Aang who saw them as 4 manifestations of one (what he learned from Guru Pathik). United and together, like a circle.
Tumblr media
Also, here we see another glimpse at Aang’s morals and perceptions. Perhaps it’s because of both what he learned from the air nomads and because he is the avatar that he always seeks the route of ‘good’ and peace:
“Even the firelord and the fire nation have to be treated like they’re worth giving a chance.”
And ahh, such a wholesome moment this was:

I'm BAFFLED that atla never dove into the implications of Roku and Sozin having the same birthday, like, you would think Sozin would realize he could have been avatar if some things had come differently and you bet your ass he wanted that power too. I mean, unless he and roku shared a birthday but were born in different years, which doesn't seem to be the implication but I guess it could be possible

So apparently the Fire Nation killed the air benders that escaped the temples by setting up fake refugee camps in the Earth Kingdom and would proceed to kill every air bender that came looking for safety and I-
I’m very upset right now. Fuck Sozin

some of y’all are too hard on roku
he didn’t see sozin from the time he was 16 until he was 28 (that is a HUGE time gap for development for both of them), then after his wedding he doesn’t see sozin regularly enough to know about his colonisation plans (he looks to be about 40/50 by the time he sees the colonies based on his hair), then he immediately goes and kicks sozin’s ass and says “one more wrong move and i will, in fact, kill you”, and then the next time he sees sozin again it’s when sozin lets him die in the volcano
like the way some of y’all talk it’s like he watched sozin obliterate the air nomads and went “okay ONE more chance best friend uwu” like??? spoilers but if aang was able to grow until the age of 12 with the air nomads, that means roku must have been dead for over 12 years before sozin’s comet arrived and was used to commit genocide
roku wasn’t perfect but “pathetic liberal milquetoast roku” is just as much a fanon misrepresentation as “bloodthirsty kill that motherfucker kyoshi”

Roku and Sozin aren't about Good vs Evil simplistic dichotomy or form of morality, it's about Balance and Imbalance. The main theme of Avatarverse. The episode itself made it clear the point of the story via Avatar Aang that no one's born good or bad, but it's about the roles they choose to play to maintain balance or break it, not about someone being good or evil per se.

oh my fucking god i just watched a:tla 3x06 - The Avatar and The Firelord and I AM NOT OKAY
i mean.. so many things?
Tumblr media
first of all “Zuko you are the chosen one” is objectively hillarious bcs Anakin died in the fires of Mustafar, i have to get that out of the way before anything else
second of all Avatar Roku fought a fucking volcano holy shit how much more badass can you get?!
then - THE DRAGONS, my babies?! i have questions - do the prominent members of Fire Nation get dragons assigned at birth? bcs if yes, I tested a firebender, gimme a dragonnn, but more importantly - when Zuko battles with himself in s2, after he lets Appa go and denounces the Blue Spirit disguise, there are two dragons whispering to him - the blue one with Azula’s voice is the same as the dragon of Firelord Sozin, and the red one in Iroh’s voice is Avatar Ruko’s, which is just so freaking awesome and well thought out?! like, I can’t even with the smartness of this series?!
third - all the parallels oh my godddd, like, okay
Roku and Sozin were friends turned enemies, and Zuko and Aang are enemies about to be turned friends (idk yet, am still waiting for that moment, but i’m guessing its coming soon?); it shows perfectly how choice is all you get in the end? like, Sozin was raised in peace and he turned megalomaniac, and Zuko was raised in megalomania and still is about to be turned peaceful? it all comes down to choice, really. I can’t wait for Zuko to choose right tbh.
also - Aang is just. so good. “everyone should be given a chance”? that kind of belief is honestly very hard to come by, and very hard to observe, bcs the world is so awful and cynical, faith like that shines so fucking brightly.
I think I had some other thoughts but lemme get back to you on that.

Did Sozin know Gyatso?
HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT,,, do y’all think Sozin KNEW Gyatso ?? Like, what if they met at Roku’s wedding. Or, even if they didn’t meet, Sozin probably heard all about Gyatso and Roku’s other airbender buddies when He and Roku reconnected after Roku was done with his twelve years of training.
Like,,,,, do y’all think the Southern Air Temple is the one Sozin personally went to, while his generals launched their simultaneous attacks on the other temples ?? OmG do y’all think Sozin personally saw Gyatso and demanded the avatar from him? i mean i don’t think he would know which temple the avatar was born in, but maybe he just had an inkling to go to the southern air temple, even if to just force information out of rokus friend.
damb bc just, maybe at this point its been days or weeks or months since aang left and gyatso truly has no idea where aang is, but sozin doesn’t believe him and proceeds to obliterate the temple.

I’ve kind of noticed a trend on tumblr for the last six-seven months since LOK ended. Avatar Korra is a strong, muscular, bisexual woman of color who has struggled with and overcome mental illness. She didn’t start out a perfect avatar in the beginning of the series, but she grew and progressed throughout the course of the series and became successful and a wonderful avatar in her own right. She’s an inspirational character that has helped so many people in so many different ways. I’ve even seen people who aren’t even active members of the LOK fandom praise her for all she’s become.
And yet I still see people hate on Book 4 Korra and Korra in general, and these people aren’t just random tumblr trolls. They’re people who have watched Korra’s journey and seen her grow just like the rest of us. And they insist on hating on her because they didn’t get exactly what they wanted from a series that has given so much to people. They’re the epitome of self-expectant and selfish, and I’m getting tired of seeing their passive-aggressive whining on tumblr.
It’s been over half a year. GET. OVER. IT.

When I started The Avatar and the Firelord episode, I was immediately turned off thinking it was gonna be an episode all about how Sozin the warlord who committed genocide had a Soft Side™ and you know was actually a Complicated Guy™. I can’t tell you how surprised and relieved I was that the writers did not try to pull that. No, Sozin was a fucking asshole, and the story frames him as a fucking asshole. There is no grey area when it comes to genocide, and they didn’t try to insert it where it doesn’t belong.
They also at the same time were able to remind the audience that not every single individual in the Fire Nation is evil, without downplaying or excusing the evil the Fire Nation as a whole has done.
I’m just… really impressed by the unprecedented sensitivity dealing with this kind of topic, that has elsewhere in the series thus far been tone-deaf at times.

No more bullying Roku for fighting a volcano. Learn about blast radiuses and ash cover. (Strap in fellas, this is a long one.)
Tumblr media
This is a map of the ash cover in the US if Yellowstone exploded today. There would be a layer of ash covering the entire country and a large portion of the western US would be suffocated.
Now, Roku’s island is no where near as big as Yellowstone so here’s the ash covering of Mount Vesuvius (the volcano that destroyed Pompeii) because I think it’s more comparable to the size of Roku’s Island.
Tumblr media
This is a much smaller volcano and it STILL destroyed four cities and had an smoke plume of about 25 miles.
Tumblr media
Here’s a map of the Fire Nation that I added a estimated scale to for a better visual.
The Fire Nation is a rather small nation, Roku’s Island and Caldera City are only 100 miles apart, so if the volcano had been allowed to erupt it would have covered most of the nearby island in ash and probably would have killed hundreds of people.
Honestly I’m underestimating the size of Ruko’s volcano because Sozin said he could see the plume of smoke and could feel the rumbling when he was a hundred miles away, but I don’t actually have any authority on this topic. If any geologists what to come for me on this I would appreciate it.
TL:DR Volcanoes of any size will fuck your shit up and if you’re gonna bully Roku do it for the right reasons, like when he let Sozin live after he had the audacity to breath in imperialist.
