The Progress
To ensure that the pieces performed in the concert are of a high calibre, a vetting process is adopted and conducted by my teachers.
The first vetting is set to be on 4 Dec 2023. It is an important milestone in the planning process as we get to watch our fellow schoolmates and friends perform their chosen repertoire for the concert.
Performing has never been my strength in my years as a classical pianist. Opportunities like PV give me a chance to improve my experience as a performer and challenges me to deal with my anxiety and worries for performing.
With the concert set to be next year in February, the most work and progress will take place between the months of December and February. As of now, I am heartened to see my peers continuously giving their best at planning and practising for PV.
In moments of sonder, this classical community in LASALLE is the greatest thing that has happened to me in my music journey :) I look forward to collaborating and making music with my friends as we go through our lives together.

The Reflection
As I journey through this planning process, I take time to think about the emotions and thoughts that I go through. Planning a concert while also submitting assignments and practising my pieces for the semester takes a toll on my mental health.
I am appreciative of my schoolmates that cheer me on and ensure that I am taking care of myself amidst the workload and responsibilities that I have.
Although it can be tough at times, I remind myself that beautiful things are worth putting your best for. A smooth-running concert that helps to spread awareness for classical music is my goal for this project! :)

The Second Meeting
Tumblr media
(Photo courtesy of my committee member Cheryl)
We had our second meeting (this time with Yocelyn too!) on 27 September 2023. I had contacted the head of the School of Dance, Melissa, and she had replied with several questions for us.
We discussed a few possible repertoire that we could collaborate with dancers for, as well as the logistics that were required for a collaboration.
I am elated that everyone is hard at work and keeping track of their tasks :) The marketing team - Yocelyn and Stella - shared with us their plans for content and the timeline for the posts.
Upon my request, Bryan - the Alliance Manager - had also contacted the 3rd-party companies that would be partnering with us to assist us in Lighting, Sound and Recording.
We also decided on the date of our concert! PV will take place on the 21st of February, 2024 at 7:30PM in the Singapore Airlines Theatre at LASALLE College of The Arts.

The Theme
Paramount to every concert planning is deciding the theme and our vision for the concert. With a theme and vision in mind, we would be able to start choosing our repertoire for the concert, as well as the visuals that we would want to work with.
We bounced around theme ideas like animals, the 4 seasons, time ... and many more! We also decided that we didn't want a super formal classical concert - we wanted something fun and engaging to the audience :)
After much consideration, we finally decided to settle on an Animation theme - which means, showcasing repertoire that has been used in movies or animation films!
We got started on choosing our repertoire fast, so that we can share it with our school mates from the rest of the classical stream in LASALLE.
I personally felt that this theme was refreshing! I think the audience would be able to relate and enjoy the pieces because (most) people enjoy watching movies and/or animation films :) It's marvelous that everyone agreed to this theme.

The First Meeting
Tumblr media
On 6 July 2023, we had our first PV committee meeting with my teacher, Frank (missing Yocelyn :( )! We discussed our ideas for PV and shared our favourites from the different PV concerts that we watched.
It was wonderful to see how everyone was so excited to begin our planning for PV and I am looking forward to work with them.

The Initial Plan
Given that this PV is the 10th edition, my teachers had plans to make it special. An initial idea was to include signature pieces of every past PV that were executed in the best way and/or were audience favourites.
I received the recording archives and shared it with my committee, giving them the task of watching the concerts and bookmarking their top picks from each PV. I was particularly interested in the items that involved collaboration with the School of Dance.
The deadline for this task was 6 July 2023, when our first committee meeting with my teacher is set to take place.

The Beginning
On 24 May 2023, I created a Whatsapp group with all my committee members! In this edition of PV, I am the Chairperson. Here are the names of my group mates and their respective roles:
Cheryl - Producer
Bryan - Alliance Manager
Yocelyn - Marketing Leader
Stella - Assistant Marketing
I started off by asking everyone to brainstorm ideas for PV. As I had previously discussed with my teacher, Frank, we were interested in collaborating with artists from other schools in LASALLE, such as Dance and Animation. I then asked if they knew anyone in the other schools that we could reach out to for a collaboration.
As the Chairperson, I am responsible for overseeing the planning process and ensuring that everyone (committee members and the performers) are on track for their tasks and are clear of their roles in this concert. Upon reflection of my performance in the committee of the previous PV, I have come to realise that I struggle with being strict with my committee members as I am afraid to be seen as too stern or uptight. This time, I will be learning how to strike a balance between being understanding and being too confrontational towards my peers.

Introduction to my Project! :)
For my project, I will be planning a classical concert - Piano Voyage (PV). It takes place every 1 to 2 years in the Singapore Airlines Theatre in LASALLE College of The Arts, Singapore. This concert will be the 10th in the PV series.
I am utterly thrilled and euphoric to start this journey with a different group of committee members. I have been part of a PV committee in 2022-2023 for the previous edition of PV - Piano Voyage IX: Water Fantasy. As the Chairperson and Producer, I had an incredible amount of fun (though sometimes also experienced a dreadful load of stress from the tasks and responsibilities) organising and executing the concert, all thanks to my supportive committee that I am grateful for.
In this page, I will be documenting the planning process and my thoughts as I manoeuvre through this experience a second time!
