Corrupted Tzen armor - 3D Model

Hi, It has been a while, once again! Sometimes, I am not sure what to share on Tumblr. I will try to keep sharing about my 3D journey. The next episode of Untold Tale of Pandaria (Pandaria Monogatari) is running well. The progress has been a bit slower than expected because of the sleeves that are custom and a nightmare to animate.

Talking about "nightmare", we finally arrived at That part that I wanted to give a try for a long time: a short horrific Japanese ghost movie! I am a huge fan of the Fatal Frame game series, and I also really enjoy the tones of Asian ghost stories and movies.

(Note: This gif features a yokai, not a yurei or an onryo. But it is the less scary I found) In the machinima, I feel like I have the unique opportunity to play around with this! The whole scene in this Kaiki eiga style will be released apart to not scare the audience. Also, from the lesson learned from the prologue, I need to avoid multiple intrigues, to keep the narrative flow clear enough. So we will briefly see ghosts (many more elaborated and diverse models than below), and see later whom they torment and how they proceed.

This long digression being done... Let's talk about the new model I made and its lore! (Finally) I have had the draft idea of this armor for a long time! In the lore of the machinima, the Tzen armor is a centuries-old artifact of the eponymous clan. It is thought to have been partly destroyed, just like most of the belongings of the disposed clan. The last warrior thought to have owned and worn the armor was Tho's father. Although Mei-Phang claimed that they saw it, altered but complete, in Tho's bedroom, during their teenage years (so about a decade after the execution of all the Tzen patriarchs). The armor is considered an artifact because it changes with the owner's will and absorbs the chi around, accordingly. The Tzen identified themselves with the Mountains of the South that can bring prosperity or devastation. The armor thus "embodies" that ambivalence.

In the prologue, we could foresee that Tho chose a path of destruction, realizing way too late the disaster he'd caused.

But this had consequences. And notably on the Tzen armor. In the "Notes about the Untold Tale" (written by one of my lorewalker OC, Wen-Long) states that the Tzen armor got corrupted with so much bad chi that it started wandering by night, more likely seeking for revenge. Older Mei-Phang would have to relocate their students, when the armor started causing a big safety concern. Yet, the armor never attacked Mei directly, unless they wear the official kimono of the Zhu clan.

The customization work on this armor was pretty simple and straightforward. I started from an existing Huojin sentinel model that I rediscovered while playing (Han-zhu) on the PTR. (On the screenshot, you can see a hint regarding one of Han-zhu's first names, btw... :D).

The original mesh of the model had few refinements to attenuate the plate-looking style. I then worked on the main additions: -add a wakidate on the kabuto (helmet) -refine the sode (shoulder pads) - add a kusazuri and a haidate (lower part) These additions were very simple but they gave a nice silhouette. I improved my retopology and seam marking, so the work on the kusazuri/haidate was much less painful than on Han-zhu's samurai armor in the prologue! The main work on this armor was the texturing that was almost completely remade from scratch. First I wanted Tho's eyes to be visible beyond the menpo (mask), but it looked like he was squinting, like, way too much! And it really messed up the frightening aura of the armor! XD

So I decided to keep the eyes red-glowing and add Tho's "emblematic" red scarf, instead.

Hello, It has been a while! I always forget to post around there! Every Friday, I invite my mutuals on social media to drop their ideas for sketches. This helps me stretch a bit my hands after the weekly lab workload. This is the reason why it is called "Stretching Sketching Friday". Actually, it was a late Saturday session, this time. One of the topics I got was "Cool Brewmaster design". I am really happy with how it turned out!!

The design is partly inspired by Tho-tzen. I hope to improve my 3D skills enough, so I can showcase his powers in the machinima, as they should be.

Minecraft - Back to Fort Panda

Hi there, I was back to Minecraft this weekend! The squad was a bit smaller: my brother and me. Yet, many things happened during this session, and we really had a blast! Billy's house in the jungle The main objective of this session was to build me a house. I like the style I gave to the building. I still struggle to build a rooftop, and symmetry is still...an abstract concept, sometimes. But, it is a cozy place with a nice view. And there is no longer a need to sleep in the temple or in the panda stable, which is a great improvement! :D

Panda Garden Invasion The slight problem of panda overcrowding (mentioned in a previous Minecraft post) is not fully fixed. I think I need to double the fence to prevent the pandas from falling... ^^' So, now, I have many pandas happily frolicking in my garden, which is quite cute! :D

The Storm Sadly, later in the night, a big storm hit Fort Panda. We had a lightning rod to prevent the buildings (mainly made of jungle wood and bamboo) from being affected. Not impressed by the extreme meteorological conditions, several pandas decided it was just the best time to have a snack in the middle of the bamboo grove. But they got stuck at mid-road between the fence of a farm and the so-called lightning rod... The first pandas got hit and vaporized into dust and bamboo sticks, which attracted the other pandas nearby ("Yeah, warm bamboo snack!"). Lightning stroke a second time, and so on... Meanwhile, our piglets were turned into zombies and started attacking us.

What a night! We lost 13 pandas and almost all our piglets! My brother made a commemorative fountain near the place of the terrible incident. We put the bamboo sticks that were dropped by the vaporized pandas, as a tribute... You can notice that we placed the new lightning rod there, so it could protect the buildings and the pandas.

Happy Ending! But no worries, as shown in the very first picture of this post, the garden colony has already recovered pretty well and is thriving, now! Next time, we will secure the bamboo grove and connect the panda stable (near the temple), to the garden. The pandas will soon have a wonderful haven!

Zhu-en's model

3D sessions had been a bit shorter, as I received some friends at home, and then I had to refill my energy. Plus regular work and other professional duties. But I have been spending some time on Zhu-en's model for the next episode of Untold Tale of Pandaria. And I am delighted with how it turned out! In the prologue, we met the character as a young child.

In the next episode, she will be a bit grown up, but struggling to find her path, because of her overprotective father.

I postponed working on this model because I needed to have a clear idea of the Zhu clan's aesthetics. Here are the preparatory sketches I made. I will more likely use the different color tones during the machinima.

For the teen model, I decided to use the dark blue one. First, because it shows the most Zhu-en's willingness to look like her father. Then, for a practical reason, as this outfit gives a better contrast with Mei-Phang who will share some screen time with her.

My brother told me that the kimono sleeves should be more rectangular, but those are still a nightmare to animate. So I decided to keep them simple, even if it made the outfit a bit less realistic.

I cannot wait to animate this cutscene of the episode! (You can see that Zhu-en is still small compared to Mei! :3). See you next time!

Untold Tale - Close Up: Mei-Phang's models

Hi there, The progress of the next episode is getting pretty fast and smooth! I now render per layer, which enables me to render complex animation really quick, so I can spend more time fixing and polishing them. I am already reaching one of the last cutscenes, in which Tho and Mei "officially" meet again, about 15 years after the prologue.

To keep the whole story short for now, Mei has the most complete and diverse wardrobe of the machinima!

Because they play so many roles in the city! They are Lord Han-zhu's secretary and healer, but they are also an elite warrior who give classes at the Dojo of the Silver Serpent. By night, they may work as a waitress in rough places, to look after Tho and keep an eye on his alcohol consumption. As an heir of the Zhu clan, they are also highly respected as a lord.

I love this character so much. We can guess that they undergo a lot, but they always find the strength to stand strong and dignified.

I found them pretty cool and charismatic, either in a qipao or in a gi. And I like this ambiguity.

For this first reunion with Tho, I first thought about re-using the dojo uniform. But this would have been totally out of character for Mei: This is just not bearable for this elegant Pandaren to just show up in front of their ex-lover, sweaty, in "sportswear" (although Tho would have clearly loved that! OvO). On the other hand, a complete kimono may not sound appropriate either. Tho lives in a rough street, and Mei is not heading there alone. While they could totally stand to fight 1v10 robbers on their own, they are too worried about Zhu-en getting harmed in a potential fight. I thus gave them a traveler look that is pretty close to their daimyo outfit. The symbol of the Zhu clan is discrete but easily seen, so people may think twice before causing them trouble. The fact of opting out for a traveler's outfit also enables me to avoid the crafting of their katana and wakizashi, for now.

I did not spend that much time on the details of this model, but I really like the haori I made. Funnily enough, the base color is close to the first attempt I did for the Fenghang costume.

I cannot wait to get the fully animated cutscene! How do you feel this gonna go between those two characters? ... :D

Zhu - Episode 2 - Additional scene

After the Minecraft interlude, it is time to come back a bit to 3D animation. It has been now a month since I uploaded the Prologue of Untold Tale of Pandaria. So far, I received great and positive feedback! I decided to implement an episode to explain a bit more about some characters' evolution before MoP. In particular, I want to show Zhu-en's admiration for his father, and also the way PTSD is progressively destroying Lord Han-zhu. It is a very soft but bittersweet scene that I hope people will enjoy. So, instead of starting the machinima with the three Bian-Lian dancers in the tavern, the story will start in the garden of the Zhu palace.

This first scene features three small koi fish. They represent the past, present, and future of the Zhu clan, especially Lord Han-zhu's fate. They all have their personalities. Happy is swimming peacefully; Broken tries to avoid the other fish; Healed is faster and tends to follow Broken, eventually chasing them away.

The big challenge of this scene is that the garden is highly rich in detail. (I watched the last Miyazaki just before starting the design... It might have influenced me!). There is a double skybox, grass with particles and brushstroke effects, and a lot of plants (I designed most of them, and I am especially proud because I am not good at drawing flowers! ^^').

Consequently, I have to render some cutscenes by layers and assemble everything like celluloid. This saves so much time at rendering, and I can polish much more animation per session (which is a substantial change for me, with the small amount of free time I do have!). The con is that the post-processing is a little bit more painful because this method then requires stitching everything frame by frame, much like traditional animation... O__O

I really enjoy working on this scene! And I cannot wait to get the whole episode assembled, because I think it will be a nice one. :D Regarding the whole project, I still have this fear and doubt in a corner of my head. I feel that what I am doing is not really Warcraft machinima, and never has been... The Zhu Pandaren clan harbors Japanese aesthetics. Pandarens are here depicted as being much more violent, and not that much in the peaceful side of the Chi. The story also treats dark topics, and it features characters that are not really pure white knights or devilish bad guys (except Garrosh, but he is shown as more narcissistic and paranoid than purely evil). I used to call my narrative style "Dark chocolate Fantasy": It is always sweet but with a punch of bitterness. Either you like it, or you don't.

But what matters is the journey! And I enjoy bringing my story to life! My OCs deserve it, and the learning path is so exciting.

Minecraft - Fort Panda - Part 2

This is a follow-up to my previous Minecraft post. If you read the previous one, you may already know that I spent part of my New Year's Eve on Minecraft with my friends and my brother. And we found two Pandas near an ancient temple in the jungle, around which we built a new colony. A week later, how is the colony going?... Pretty well! Except for a slight problem of Panda overcrowding! :D

In brief, what happened: I told my friends that the baby sick pandas can drop slime, so, when I was not there, they fed my pandas to increase the slime drop. The number of pandas was already high, so I decided to increase the farm and renovate a bit their area, so they would have more space to move around. But it was very difficult to navigate and build within a "panda super packed wave". Especially because of this guy:

An aggressive panda (born in the colony) that would kick me out anytime I would hit a panda (by mistake!) with my tools or a bamboo stick, while working in the area. Look at this face! He's so mad at me! My brother was back from an exploration. So I asked him to distract the pandas with bamboo, so I could work on the terrace. But you know, there is no good sibling without trolling... Of course, he helped me first, but he ended up Feeding all the pandas he had in charge! Doubling the number, again!! It took thus some extra effort, but now my lovely fluffy friends have a very large and secure terrace. Next time, I will work on their shelter. I know it looks like they live on wood, but no worries, they are fed with many bamboo, and I start planting some all around.

Then, I tried to resume my planned quest: Finding a brown panda. In short, this one failed. But I found a few more pandas, so it was not completely wasted time! I found back the second colony I previously fed in the wilds. And I started having "happy" pandas there!

Our little town in the jungle is the best we had so far! We had tons of resources on-site, and many exotic pet animals.

Next week, I will try again to find a brown panda. Regarding the machinima, I have been working on a set of illustrations in ukiyo-e style. A few more, and the last scene of Episode 2 will be ready. I have started the pre-rendering. It should go quite smoothly, with a release in February as expected.
