Cozy Spotlight: Ooblets
Tumblr media
Have you ever gotten so addicted to a game that you play it, and only it, for months on end, until finally one day your partner guilts you into popping a different game card into your Switch and you become obsessed with that one instead? Well, @ooblets is that game for me! This cute little creature collection game has a lot more to offer than your typical farming sim, and with a little nudge from my significant other, it was just what I needed to break my Animal Crossing addiction. It's kind of like a cross between Pokémon and Stardew Valley, with elements of both expressed in an original way and charming art style. Throw in some dancing and a whole wacky world of story on top, and you've got yourself an Ooblets addiction. Well, I do, at least.
Ooblets is developed and published by Glumberland, and even though I may loathe the desire to compare every game with creature collection to Pokémon, and every game with farming simulation to Stardew Valley, Ooblets really is best described by compacting those two into one super cute, groovy game. That doesn't mean that it's not unique though. I mean, hello, it's "groovy."
Tumblr media
Gettin' the Ooblets So I've already mentioned that Ooblets is a creature collection game (like, several times), but what you may not know is the groovy way you actually go about collecting those creatures. If you haven't figured it out by now, it's dancing. Near the beginning of the game you join one of the four ooblet clubs presented to you, and then you get an ooblet associated with that club. You use that ooblet to dance battle other ooblets via a turn-based card battler, shown above. The battles are pretty easy, which just makes the game more accessible to younger audiences, and they're pretty straight-forward. You use your fresh "beats" to play dance cards and earn points. If you get enough points before the AI does, you win! Then the ooblet is gently forced, or um... encouraged, to toot out a seed (yes, that's right, TOOT), and after that it's all yours. When you plant the seed, an ooblet will grow. Bet ya don't see that in any Pokémon games, do ya?
Tumblr media
Farmin' It Up Now that you've got your ooblet seed, it's time to plant it on your farm. Of course you have a farm. It's a farming sim. You also received a dilapidated house, access to a fishing area (known as "sea-dangling"), and for some reason you have the responsiblitiy to help the mayor save this place known as Badgetown. Pretty standard farming simulator tropes. It's ok though, because you've got your little ooblet buddies to help you through it. You spend your days dancing in battles, planting ooblet seeds and other crops, cooking those crops into fancy dishes, selling those dishes for "gummies" (in-game money), fixing up and decorating your house, buying outfits or changing your hair style, earning "friendship stickers" with the locals, traveling to other places via hot air balloon, and basically doing whatever the game tells you to do, but at your own pace. Which even though there is an overall story taking place (that I won't spoil for you) there is no rush to finish it. You can spend as much time as you want collecting ooblets until you catch 'em all, Ash style, if that's what you want.
Tumblr media
Catchin' Them All There are many, many, MANY different types of ooblets, some of which you need to use special in-game "wishies" to unlock, which are basically like premium currency or reward points. Each ooblet comes in three versions (common, uncommon, and gleamy) and certain ooblets are only available in certain places. For example, if you want a Pantsabear ooblet then you have to travel via hot air balloon to Pantsabear Hill, while Gleamy ooblets are more likely to be found during a rainbow rainstorm. Yes, the rain is colorful sometimes. Getting all of the ooblets will take time. To travel to different areas, you have to unlock them by playing through the story more, which is presented to you through a series of naturally occuring dialogue and quests. On top of that, each ooblet also has its own set of cards available to use in your dance battle deck, but it's not quite a deck builder. You just have to decide which ooblets follow you around and get to dance with you. Only a total of eight ooblets can follow you, so deciding can sometimes be strategic (and also very, very HARD), but you can have more ooblets at home on your farm, or you can send them to the wildlands to be free. Sort of. As you can see, the game has a lot to offer. I really enjoy the pace of it. There is always something to do, but you never feel rushed to do it. There are day/night cycles, as well as weather to consider, but for the most part you don't have to worry too much about the consequences of your actions or the timeliness of them. Which is good for a former Animal Crossing addict, because you don't have to be quick about doing anything in that game. Why do you think I'm still playing it after all this time? Well, you know, when I'm not playing Ooblets. Ooblets is currenlty available on PC (Epic Games Store), Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and the Nintendo Switch. If you prefer Steam as your PC platform, they do have a Steam page. However, it is not yet available for purchase on Steam, but you can wishlist it now. And you should. I did. Even though I already own two other copies. It's just that good. - SMP 💗

The Ooblets 1.1 Localization Update is live!! (on Switch & PC)
This adds French, Spanish (LatAm), and German translations to all the game text and dialogue.
If you don't speak any of those languages this update might not sound that exciting, but it was a huge project for us and we're super excited to get more folks playing. From early reports it sounds like the translators did a great job of capturing the spirit of the game, so shout out to the team at Local Heroes!
If you have any feedback about the translations, please feel free to share it with us in our Discord! 🌸🌺🌷
Next, we're going back to focusing on our Springtime Event Update and will hopefully have a more official public roadmap to share with everyone soon.
Thank you again for all of your support, kindness, and patience. ❤️
