Happy Halloween to all ghosts and ghouls who happen upon this post! I didn't have the time to whip something up for Halloween, but here's a part of a larger project I'm working on! (The lightening of my phone camera is a lil bit off, so I'll fix it when I finish the entire piece :D )

A ‘brief’ addition to my Spirit rant. First and foremost, I’ve been taking a closer look at the Spirit reboots. I now have a massive question for the franchise: where the hell did the Native Americans go? In the original movie, Little Creek was a major character. He prevented Spirit’s early death from the The Colonel, and he was the only character to realize that Spirit needed to be free (hence the name Spirit-Who-Cannot-Be-Broken). Additionally, the attack on the Lakota Tribe was a massive turning point in the movie. Spirit never would have attempted to stop the train had he not made the connections with Little Creek, Rain, and the Lakota tribesmen. It was also the friendship he made with Little Creek that helped both survive the train collisions and the following chase through the canyons.
Furthermore, Spirit is one of the only Dreamworks films that has a Native American character in the lead cast. Spirit Riding Free, from what I’ve been able to find online, only had one Native American character, Mixtli, in the nine seasons it has been on Netflix (this may be wrong. I haven’tt sat down to watch all nine seasons. Feel free to correct me). I have not watched Spirit Untamed (I do not want to), so I am not sure if there are Native American characters in the movie, but I know that they’re not in the main cast. So back to my main question: where the hell did the Native Americans go? The reboots take place around two decades after the movie, so why couldn’t Little Creek’s child be a character in the show? Removing the Native Americans from Spirit not only takes out a vital part of the original film’s story, but it also cuts out the opportunity to delve into the narrative of an already underrepresented group of people.
Also, I’ve learned that Lucky’s grandfather owns a railroad company. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but I’m just going to point to the fire scene in the 2002 movie. Oop.
TL;DR: The Spirit reboots are lacking in Native American Characters where as the original movie had Little Creek and the Lakota Tribe as major characters.
Alrighty, so recently me and my friend have been talking about Spirit: Stallion of Cimarron, and it brought to mind the Spirit reboots and shit on Netflix. I for one know that, as a kid, I would have enjoyed the cartoon and upcoming movie. After all, I was THE horse girl in my elementary school and consumed all content that had a horse shape on it. However, I can't help but feel a bit miffed that the new cartoons and movies are taking out a lot of what made Spirit special. The 2002 movie (underrated as hell) was just different from all the other horse movies I watched as a kid. For one thing, a lot of the horse movies followed the pattern...
1. Girl meets horse
2. Horse gets hurt, or girl gets bullied by the rich kids, or parent issues, or all three
3. Girl and Horse prove to the world that their bond is stronger than anything on planet earth.
4. Cue frolicking and obligatory male character of interest falling in love with female protagonist. (Black Beauty is an exception to this).
And I don't have a problem with that. You do you Flicka fans. It's just that Spirit was such a different experience than what I listed above. For one thing, it's told entirely from the horse's perspective, and it tells a compelling story about the negative impacts of Westward Expansion. You see how the advancements of technology harm the flora and fauna, you see how the American soldiers tormented the Native Americans, you see how these things hurt Spirit and his companions. Through the years, these things have stuck with me, and it's made me conscious of how fucked up 'Manifest Destiny' was. Spirit explicitly showed the negative impacts through the victims eyes, and I feel as if that was one of the most important take aways from the movie. Public School could never tell that type of story and I think it's one that people need to listen to.
That's where my problem with the reboots come to play. Instead of going with what made Spirit special in the first place, it goes back to the Girl Meets Horse story. Lucky meets Spirit and the two have a bond that cannot be broken. From what I've seen of the Netflix cartoon, it's a sweet show and I wouldn't keep young girls from watching it. I just think that these reboots take away from the majesty that was the original film. It also takes out a lot of brutality that came in that era. Obviously, this is a children's show, but try and tell me that you forgot that fire scene. Try and tell me you didn't cry when Sound the Bugle now played while Spirit was taken away from Rain and Little Creek. Try and tell me you don't remember when the American soldiers attacked the Lakota Tribe (in the movie. The American soldiers did a lot of shit, but we're keeping it simple to avoid going feral). Those things stick with you, and as graphic as they are, it's not even on par with what happened in real life. The closest these new shows have to that is Spirit almost getting captured, Lucky almost falling into a cliff, and relationship problems with friends and family. In my opinion, this shift removes what made the original special, and further solidifies 2002 Spirit as that DreamWorks horse movie when it's so much more than that.
TL;DR: Spirit 2002 should receive more recognition for the story it told and I feel as if the reboots focus more on classic Horse Girl Story rather than criticisms on Westward Expansion. And that's tea fam. Thanks for hearing me out.

I started this about a year and a half ago at a swim meet, then I promptly forgot about it when I got home. Until recently, it's been sitting on a dresser under stacks of paper. I decided to finish it up by coloring it, but since I hate using markers, I decided to work on stippling! I did die a little on the inside when I accidently used a green pen on the yellow, but what can you do.
Happy Holidays!
