Chapter 7: The adventure begins
Word count - 1.6k (not proofread)
Note: Hopefully this chapter is more intriguing, I've got most the boring buildup bite out of the way now and I can start getting to the crux of the story, woohoo!
•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡
The forest was lush with life around you. The soil was dampened with recent rain fall making the ground feel spongy beneath your feet while the air was thick with that foreign humidity that was native to Pandora. You felt out of place as it seemed each step you took a twig would snap beneath it or a rustle of leaves would be left in its wake.
Jake and Neytiri were silent, they moved through the forest with ease but it was second nature to them now unlike you, a fresh face in this savage planet. You trailed behind them with wide eyes as you felt the scornful gaze of hidden creatures track you, you tried to focus on the path ahead.
Jake walked slightly hunched as if he were still a marine while Neytiri stood tall with her eyes gazing above it, she knew she could handle herself.
A while later, echoes of voices could be heard.
The outskirts of the village began to appear with tall watchtowers full of armed guards standing proud amongst the vegetation, the stalks of the mighty towers covered in ivy and moss to disguise them. The warriors looked down from their huts at the Oleyektan and Tsahik, confused as to why yet another dreakwalker has been allowed past their bounds. Some warriors held guns stolen from the war while the more interesting of the lot held arrows encased in thin razor like spines that had been crafted from the abandoned artifacts.
It was intimidating yet intriguing. You found yourself avoiding eye contact with each one although you know their eyes are heavily trained on you, you felt the relentless urge to just wrap your arms around yourself in a selfmade blanket of comfort but alas you didn't want to appear weak.
The sound of chatter and yips became louder the further into the forest you went, the village life growing denser. You noticed how Neytiri dropped part of her defensive stance and instead straightened to show her swollen stomach, she was proud and she should be as she was carrying the next leader - their heir. The chatter begin to hush as the chiefs walked past, the clan pressing their fingers from their heads and down towards the earth in a sign of greeting and respect before eyeing you.
They could smell the strange freshness that laced your skin as if you were newly born, which technically you were. They didn't outright show their disapproval out of respect to their leaders but you saw how their ears slightly pulled back and mothers hid their young behind their legs.
It made you feel self aware and you finally relented and wrapped your arms around your lean stomach, trying to protect yourself from the ever present stares. It didn't make you feel any better.
The huts here were mainly built in the trees, hidden from normal view, but if you looked closely you could see manually placed planks of wood that would circle the trunks of the trees leading to woven pathways throughout the sky. You followed Jake and Neytiri closely, unsure of where they were taking you.
The people that had now been left on the path behind began to huddle as soon as you left, their whispers chasing and taunting you as you felt their stare flick from your back then back to their friends. Jake noticed it too and he offered you a small smile that you returned. He knew what it was like to be stared at, to be the talk of the town, but at least he had the training to not care for any of it but here you were, a feeble little scientist buried deep in her shell - how were you going to survive this?
Neytiri paid the whispers no mind as she continued to lead the way through the constant forming crowds until they reach a tree with one of the said staircases wrapping up from its base. The climb looked long and dangerous.
She looked up to where the tree met a platform before looking at you.
“You must climb”
She said as if it were simple, as if you wouldn't die with one wrong step.
“I've never climbed before”
“Then you will learn now or you will not survive”
It was at this moment you think back to one of Jakes call logs where he would speak of first entering tribe life, he said Neytiri went by the motto ‘learn or die’ and here she was, proving his point.
You felt yourself begin to tremble like a frightened pup and Neytiri either noticed and didn't care or just didn't see, you placed your bets on the first. Jake however clapped a hand on your shoulder and gave it a slight squeeze.
“I'll go first and you can watch what I do”
He says reassuringly and steps on the first plank, his foot slightly angled so he could maintain balance. He repeated this step at a slowed pace to show you his every movement and you did just that.
“Now you go”
You heard Neytiri say in a surprisingly encouraging voice.
“I will follow you”
She states, you knew this was one of the rare occasions she was trying to reassure you, that she would protect you on your ascent, yet it just added pressure that in case you'd slip you'd now not only squash the Tsahik but a pregnant Tsahik at that.
Nevertheless you nod, trying to reenact what Jake had done before, you place your foot at a slight angle on the plank. You then feel Neytiri come close to you from behind.
“You have turned it too much, you will instead lose balance this way”
She explains and you straighten you foot slightly.
“Well done”
She praises and you can feel a blush of excitement and pride flush onto your cheeks. You then push off the ground and slowly but carefully begin your wobbly ascent.
Neytiri trekked the steps behind you, her movements fluid and accurate while watching you like a hawk. She'd give you frequent instruction yet also compliments at every turn - it was clear she had picked up you responded better to being gently guided than yelled at. The complete opposite of Jake who would never listen unless you clipped him round the ear.
After what seemed like an hour long attempt, you felt your feet hit a wider yet spongyer surface and you could've cried out in relief instead you settled for a pleased sigh. Neytiri came up behind you shortly after and you swear you saw her feline-like smile before she covered her mouth with her palm.
You turned to Jake with a proud smile as if you wanted him to be proud of you also and he had a smile on his face as well, his eyes crinkling slightly. Jake knew you were proud of yourself and he was too; however he secretly knew you made more of a meal out of that than he did on his first attempt.
“Well done”
He says with an amused tone but you were to relieved to hear the slight tease in his voice.
You now looked out across the vast tribal land from a whole new perspective. The edge of the patch of forest descended into a sheer cliff face that rivalled the height of the hallelujah mountains, you could see the bottom of their rocky forms peaking out the underbelly of the clouds. Inside the tribe land was just as fascinating, the na'vi had crafted a massive network of spiderweb-like patterns, connecting each tree to its sibling and each bridge ended with a nest like hut, some big some small. You could see na'vi of various shapes and sizes making their way throughout the levitated village, some holding baskets of fruits while others were just children chasing each other with wooden carved toys. No matter where you looked there was a smile.
The spongy pathway you were on lead to the second grandest hut their was, it was colossal in size while still looking cosy despite not being able to see in due to a warm toned woven covering blocking everything but the light from entering. The outside of the hut was decorated with beaded strings and carved symbols, some you recognised as the religious symbols of the Omaticayan tribe. It was only then you realised who's hut you were standing in front of.
It was Mo'at's.
Neytiri looked over at you before she spoke.
“My mother would like to meet you, she wants the blessing of Eywa to see if we should teach you our ways.”
It was here you could see Neytiri was slightly more accepting than you originally thought. Maybe it was due to you sharing a bond with Grace, that Neytiri felt like she owed her adopted parental figure this one favour and it was.
Neytiri had seen Grace as a mother, as she saw her dying, about to be taken by Eywa, it was then she realised she truly loved the woman and wished to honour her death in any way she could. Maybe you were this way, maybe you were how she could keep her unspoken promise to a dying woman.

Chapter 6 - The adventure begins
Note: Thank you all very much for the support, this is obviously my first time writing a series so sorry its taking a while, this story might go on temporary hiatus while I focus on my big girl exams but thanks for all sticking with me
•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡
Jake and Neytiri left soon after, the woman still mildly angry despite her acceptance while Jake trailed behind her like a sorry puppy. You watched them go in an awkward silence as if you were holding your breath until you were sure that they had left. Only once they finally exited the large metal doors did you let out a shaky sigh, proud of yourself for sticking it out but also angry that you looked like a bit of a coward.
You knew you needed to make a lasting impression on the Na'vi couple and their people, this was a whole entire community known to be hostile to humans, you had to walk on eggshells but not too much or they'll think of you as weak yet you have to be bold but not too bold or you'll be arrogant. This was all very stressful so you spend the rest of you day practicing handy phrases in the native tongue and studying which plants were safe to touch, the day rolled by quickly with the promise of tomorrow.
Before you went back to sleep in your now human form Norm pulled you aside-
“No sleeping in tomorrow, Jake said that he and Neytiri will be here at 5”
He says with a slightly mocking smirk, you only groaned in disapproval, flopping dramatically back into the hammock, careful not to go flying out.
“Village life starts early, don't blame me”
Norm justifies with his hands raised in surrender but that mocking grin was still there.
—-------
The next day rolled around too early for your liking, the vibration of a small watch on your wrist serving as your alarm. 4:30am, you didn't think you'd got up this early since high school.
This was the first time you had managed to see the actual rising of the sun and it was a sight to behold. The rich cloak of night was broken by the bright colours of the rising sun, it arose earlier than it would on earth due to the planet being closer to the bright star. The room was still dim though and filled with soft snores and strewn limbs but some strange people enjoyed waking up early and had already left the sleeping chamber. Norm was awake due to his empty hammock so you climbed out of yours, gathering your belongings in your hand and tiptoeing into the kitchenette.
Norm was there at the table, nursing a mug of coffee, looking half dead.
“You decide to join me in my early morning?”
You ask with a cocked brow, surprised considering his mocking tone from the day prior.
“Well what would you do without me in these lonesome morning hours”
He retorts, he was quick you'd have to give him that.
You ate a breakfast of powdered eggs and a bit of fruit along with a much needed cup of tea to not only soothe your nerves but keep you alive for the next undoubtedly grueling hours. After that Norm accompanied you to the link room, giving you unasked for but needed tips as a former avatar himself.
You lied back in the link bed and endured the same routine as you had the times before, leaving your human body behind for that of an aliens.
You had left your avatar body in an inside room the night before knowing you'd be meeting the same place as yesterday anyway, you changed your outfit into something that you hoped looked slightly more native: some strange, green shorts with a woven belt paired with a smaller and more delicate top. Almost all clothes came from the same box due to an avatars irregular sizing so it's not like you could be picky.
Along with an effort on the outfit you replaitted your hair, weaving in a few smaller braids to make the style more intricate and pretty. You were subconsciously trying to impress Jake and Neytiri which you put down to just wanting to make a better impression on them.
Arriving first in the meeting room, you paced nervously keeping a constant stare on the sealed door that led to the Pandoran wilderness. You would frantically check the small clock, 5:03am, they were late, could this mean that she no longer allows you to explore the forest? Could this mean you've angered her and her tribe?
Before you could question yourself further the steel locks of the door shrieked as they opened, in came a relaxed Jake and a weaponized Neytiri. Neytiri had the same narrowed gaze and proud stand as the day before where as it seemed Jake had allowed himself to relax slightly more around you, his shoulders slightly slumped with a small smile.
Jake liked you, he found the nervous way you acted around him and his mate something quite amusing and something possibly quite cute. He could tell you were a strong woman yet a respectable one, you would recognise that you couldn't act like equals to the natives yet but he knew if a situation came to it you'd hold your ground.
Neytiri on the other hand was still wary about you, she thought you were like Jake but with every passing minute she saw differences in your mannerisms and speaking patterns that were a lot softer and more logical than what her mates were at the beginning. As much as she tried to deny it and keep herself believing that she hated you and your kind, she found herself growing ever more curious about you.
Meanwhile you were just standing there like a wide eyed idiot. Neytiri didn't come close and examine you like the day before and instead she just nodded towards her mate.
“Are you ready?”
Jake says after seeing his mates nod.
“I believe so”
You say back politely. Neytiri then motions for Jake to leave first, then you, then her. Trialing between the middle of the pair you felt a heavy silence, you would occasionally glance up at Jake and behind to Neytiri, Jake being oblivious to your apparent discomfort and Neytiri only staring intently at you.
You all reach the end of the narrow hallway, the door ahead leading into the thick Pandoran Bush, Neytiri takes her bow from across her chest and notches an arrow while Jake opens the door. This time Neytiri steps out first, angling her bow in a way she'd be able to shoot at any moment.
Jake follows closely behind, a dagger resting in his palm, Neytiri then slacks her bow and nods for you to come out and close the door. You do so and shut the door behind you, you begin to try and walk to the forest.
Neytiris bow is suddenly pointed at your chest so you look up at her, she looks you in the eye before glancing at your feet, her bow still on your chest.
“You are too loud, take them off”
She commands and you nod, only then did she move her bow back to her side. You leant down and undid your laces, placing the shoes by the side of the door and hoping they'll still be there later. Neytiri saw this and dropped an ounce of coldness from her glare, liking that you had followed order instead of putting up protest like a normal human.
You felt the bare soles of your feet sink slightly in the moss covered ground, the sensation feeling different to your human body as the soles of your alien feet were thicker to protect you from this unforgiving terrain.
Once you had looked back up from the ground the couple were waiting for you, you walk towards them, towards the dense forest. You were about to achieve what Grace had wanted you to do, you were going to explore Pandora.

Chapter 5 - Meeting Neytiri
Note: Sorry this took so long I've been very busy but thanks for all the support 😘
The suns rose on Pandora early the next morning just like they did the day before, this time most the team had managed to wake up before you, leaving you alone in the empty sleeping quarters. Your human body felt small as you stepped out of your hammock, your skin tone no longer holding the same blue tone it had the day before.
You were still tired when you woke up considering the constant adrenalin of yesterday but you had no time to think about that - after all Jake and potentially Neytiri were meant to be meeting you at 9. The current time, 8:47.
Panicked, you skip breakfast and make a dash for the link room. The gel of the bed was cool to the touch, welcomed as a nice contrast to the humidity of Pandoran summers, your mind once again fell blank before transporting your conscious to your second body.
—-------
You woke up in the same shack you'd let your avatar rest in last night, most beds around you empty and dusty due to their lack of use. The wired room felt expansive as you ease your colossal body out of the bed and made your way over to the monitored exit. Your avatar body wore a red tank top and green shorts, exposing a thin strip of your lithe stomach and your hair fell down your back in a long braid which served as a protector for your long neural cue.
It felt strange having part of your neural wiring on the outside of your body. It felt vulnerable and exposed, as if someone were to come up behind you and pull your hair a bit to hard it could cause immense damage, especially with the strange strands that wiggled freely out the end of the plait. The Na'vis called it a kuru, something that connected you to the beings of eywa, even those that had entered her hold. It was obviously hard for someone who was raised human to fully understand the importance of it, as in human culture you would only develop a connection after the building of an emotional bond, not something instantaneous like connecting your hair to something.
You hoped to learn though. You hoped to finally experience the bonds that weave the Na'vi so deeply into their beliefs.
Pondering would have to wait though as your shoe clad feet sprinted their way back into the compound and towards the room where you had met Jake the first time. Not used to the new power or stamina you were capable of, you were out of breath by the time you got their and composed yourself outside the door before pushing it open.
Inside stood a narrow eyed woman and a sheepish Jake. Neytiri had decided to come. You immediately felt yourself being scrutinised as she trekked her eyes over your figure, with wide eyes you look over at her and notice the rather large bulge of her stomach. You held your tongue and stand up straighter, deciding not to ask about her pregnancy, she slowly approached you, her bow still in her hand and a sling of arrows on her back.
She circled you like a vulture, never once smiling or relaxing from her defensive stance. With her free hand she twirled your tail rather roughly, one of the only appendages you could not yet control so it thrashed wildly at the contact, she hissed slightly.
“Useless”
You heard her mutter as she let go of your tail with a final tug. She moved onto your clothes, fisting the bottom hem of your shirt, the obviously human made clothes causing her to tut in disapproval. As she circled round to your back she noticed the messy braid and flicked it to the side, watching it swing with baby hairs flying out as it went. Finally she looked at your feet, hers were bare and didn't make a sound as she walked across the linoleum floor while yours were clad in trainers and squeaked with every other step, she knocked the side of your foot with hers letting out another huff of rejection.
Only after her inspection did she look at your face.
There was no sign of friendliness or approval, just blank coldness.
“So you want to learn our ways”
She asks but it's less of a question and more of a statement, her accent ran thick when she spoke and so did the sound of disgust. It was clear this woman didn't like you and didn't plan on liking you any time soon.
“I would”
You reply, your voice came out quieter than you had intended making you sound as nervous as you were. She raised a hairless eyebrow at your response.
“And what makes you think you have the right?”
She inquires as if you had just proclaimed you wished to take the whole forest and claim it as your own, everything you did seemed to offend her.
“I wish to explore the forests, not because I think I have the right but because I wish to learn more”
You say, scared that anything wrong you say would be met with hostility from the woman.
She stays silent as she looks at you. Her head tilting back slightly making her extremely hard to read, her expression had not changed once while she's been here, she was constantly on guard. You understood her apprehension as even though her mate was once an avatar - or ‘dreamwalker’ as the natives call them - like you, the sky people had taken so much from her.
Grace had told you about her and how she used to attend Grace's school along with her sister, Sylwanin, but then she told you about how the school was raided by the RDA. Grace never went into much detail about what happened, only the fact it was a great tragedy and that she lost her standing with the tribe. It was times like those when you could see why Jake and Grace got along, due to both their professions they're both meant to move emotion and moral aside in order to carry out their duty, they were both so similar while still being different.
It was only after you thought about this did you admire the strength of Neytiri. She looked down at you before letting out a sort of hiss and waving her spear, Jakes face broke out into a smile. It seems she had allowed you to explore the forests.
“You are to be careful, you upset anything in the forest and I will remove you myself”
She said harshly, pointing one of her 4 fingers in your face.
“Thank you”
You say feebly, you had allowed yourself to become nervous from her words and rightfully so. You knew her words held truth as she was not about to let her home be destroyed by the same species that already had so many times before.
Neytiri was conflicted and only her mate could read that. She was scared, scared that the sky people would continue to come back and take more than they already had from her, yet she installed a mild form of trust in you. Possibly she could see the essence of Jake in you through the same curiosity he showed on his first arrival - albeit you had more knowledge than Jake had when he arrived, he was there as a compromise and you were here due to a dying woman's wish.
Jake could sense the fear in his mate, the same fear they felt in the battle not so long ago where she lost her fated mate and father. He wished to comfort her but knew she wouldn't appreciate such a display of ‘weakness’ in front of the natives supposed ‘enemy’. He also felt bad for you, he knew you held no ill will however he couldn't fault his mates hate, it would take a while for you to gain her trust and even longer to gain the trust of the people but he saw potential in you.
Jake Sully would fight your corner but never fully go against his mate.

Chapter 4 - Becoming an avatar driver
●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡
Jake watches the link bed statistics for a few moments to make sure everything was running smoothly before hastily jogging towards the room your avatar is.
“Brain activity looks good”
Said the scientist outside, watching your impending awakening through a glass screen. Jake entered the room having abandoned his gun and instead focusing on you, he looked worried but concentrated as he looked at your blue form. All they had to do was wait a few more moments.
—--------
The moment your eyes close your vision tunnels. You're surrounded by hues of blue, pinks and purples as you feel as though you're being transported across the thin barrier between subconscious and reality. Only moments later, you feel like you've been grounded once more, hitting this new reality with a mental thud.
Your body feels fresh, momentarily unnatural, then your eyelids begin to inch open, the harsh white light greatly contrasting the soft blue you had closed your eyes to.
This caused you to wince slightly and bring your hand to cover your eyes on reflex - your hand was blue. It was as if you had forgotten what you were doing and this strange change in colour startled you.
Realisation started to set in, you were blue, the transfer was successful.
As the harshness of the light subsided you look around the room further, seeing a few scientists all dressed in exo masks and baby blue suits but what stood out to you most was the only other avatar in the room, Jake. He stood out from the plain scientists and adorned bright colours with his skin which were further highlighted by the darkness of his clothing.
He smiled slightly at you, flashing those sharp canines.
The scientists soon huddled around you, asking you to sit up to which you complied. Everything seemed to be heightened. Your eyesight seemed to sharpen; your skin felt armoured and your hearing felt like you could listen to birdsong on the other side of Pandora. They asked you to touch your fingers to your thumb and then shone bright lights at your pupils - each test feeling more unnecessary than the last - they soon finished and you practically ripped the wires from your arms and stood up.
Your feet felt uneven and your head slightly light as you suddenly felt the affects of being 10 feet tall but it was a passing side effect, the grin soon returning to your face. Your tail whipped wildly behind you due to the appendage still feeling foreign, you knocked viles from their holder's and devices from their tables, it seemed the more embarrassed and nervous you got the more skittish you tail would get.
You look over at Jake, flushed with embarrassment, but he reassured you that when he first experienced his avatar he turned the whole lab against him.
After everything calmed down you took your first few baby steps to the world outside, Jake being there beside you for any assistance you may need. The world outside looked different without a mask, everything looked real now and the air fell crisper than the air on earth, everything felt cleaner. The gardens of the lab were almost military grade; they had training courts which had become dilapidated through lack of use and the overgrown gardens that you knew Grace had once loved. Everything seemed abandoned.
There were only a few avatars left in the compound but all were science geeks that had very little interest in things outside the natural life of this vast world; this meant the playground for all the other avatars had been cast aside out of everyone's mind.
Despite the dull nature of the desolate space, you enjoyed this new feeling, you enjoyed the featherlight tickles of the grass beneath you bare feet and Jake hadn't uttered a word since you'd come out, deciding it was best for you to take everything in before bombarding you with the bare bone rules. The two of you walked through the grounds, feeling the rays from the various midafternoon suns beating down on the secretive life on Pandora. The walk was calm and peaceful as you took in this new experience until Jake eventually broke the silence.
“You handled this a lot better than I did on my first test drive.”
He seemed reminiscent.
“I'm not surprised, you would've had a more fulfilling experience than me.”
You respond in a way so that you weren't mean and instead justifying his excitement, acknowledging how this experience was an extensive change for him both mentally and physically.
The two of you spoke a while longer about how it was that Jake felt when he was finally able to use his legs once more; through the whole conversation you allowed him to speak, letting him get everything off his chest as you were probably one of the first in a while to be sharing in a mildly similar experience. You felt special being trusted with such information.
However throughout the conversation you could tell that exposing his experiences like this was unnatural as he left out key information about his prior life and the hardships it held. Alas you summed this up to both his prior marine experience and then living in a proud warrior tribe, the man seriously couldn't get an emotional break.
Finally the two of you end up by the gate that led into the outside world of Pandora. The gate was thick and tall serving the purpose of keeping you in and whatever wasn't in out. It made you feel insignificant, this world had so much more life than you could currently comprehend, you had seen nothing yet you had seen a lot. Jake then turns to you and places and awkward hand on your shoulder, giving it a pat before dropping his hand - it was clear any other strategy than bossing people around was still strange to him.
“You'll do good here”
He said four such simple words and it still inspired hope in you, hope that you might be able to faintly follow in his footsteps.
“Thank you, for helping me and everything”
You were extremely grateful for this experience even more so for everything else to come, you spoke again.
“Are we going to see the forest tomorrow?”
You asked with hope but Jake looked at you nervously.
“We can make a basic start…. But Neytiri wants to inspect you before you go too far out”
He says, rubbing the back of his neck. You knew Neytiri was a fearless warrior and extremely protective of the people as well as the forest and rightly so. Although, Jake had said this as if it were something to be afraid of, now you knew you were going to have to impress this woman if you wanted even a shot at exploring the forests.
—-------
Jake walked you back to the hut were the other avatars sleep before bidding you goodnight and saying he'd be there again at 9 in the morning tomorrow, possibly with the feared yet respected Neytiri.
You collapsed into the specially made beds and fell asleep only to wake back up in your human body. You pushed the lid of the link bed open and groaned with the slight soreness of your muscles, against your better judgement you climbed out the chamber and looked around the room. Everything was the same dull grey colour with various pieces of technology the sight made you miss the vividity of the forests even though you had not experienced them.
You trudged your way through the bland corridors and into the communal eating areas once more, tonight's dinner was teylu and spartan fruit for dessert. The teylu looked unappetising as it was essentially a massive grub cooked amongst vegetables, the texture was soft with a tougher skin and it had a slightly sweet taste to it after you got over said texture. Dessert was much more appealing the purple skin being slightly bitter as you bit through to the sweet blue flesh, overall the conversation was the same as the previous night but with less tension.
Norm decided to pester you, interviewing you about your meeting with Jake, it's as if he was using you as a sponge for information that he could wring out later - in a good way of course. Something he found highly amusing was when he decided to ask if you had an attraction to Jake and when a slight crimson hue came to your cheeks you couldn't get the boyish grin off his face for the entire evening despite your denial. He was insufferable and tolerable at the same time, your only peace coming when he finally fell asleep in the adjacent hammock with you not too far behind.

Chapter 3 - Jake Sully
♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡●♡
The sun rose early the next morning due to the current season on Pandora resembling one like summer. You awoke before the others and peeked out of your hammock, seeing them all littering the floor like a minefield, it would be a hard task to get out.
You silently reach one leg over the edge of the hammock, the material swaying then tipping slightly, giving you a mild heart attack; with both legs now over the edge you carefully eased yourself onto the floor below and grab your satchel along either your footwear. Now it was the challenge of weaving through the room of a dozen other people.
You tiptoe your way over straying limbs and strewn bags, cringing every time your bare foot stuck to the linoleum floor. Finally you were at the heavy door.
It's hinges creaked slightly as you pushed it open but nobody did anything more than stir, breathing a sigh of relief you put your shoes on and make your way back towards the link room.
In the room you had set up one of Jake Sully's first video logs - the one which he described the first time he became his avatar - for some unknown reason you found the ex-marine's blunt instructions the easiest to follow. Pressing play on his narrative account you sit back in the chair and watch as he shows an emotion other than boredom for the first time, all because he could use his legs once more.
His slight detailing of the experience gave away his enthusiasm and it was almost endearing to watch.
Once the video ended you approach the chamber that will let you link with the avatar, you open the bed and touch the jelly like substance before fiddling with the skeleton shaped network of wires. You couldn't link just yet due to needing supervision. However, Norm had told you the night before to speed up the process more you could drain the fluid from the tank your avatar was in and then the scientists would take your avatar off to a preparation room of sorts.
Going over to your avatar you gently run your hand along the smooth glass before attaching a tube to the thick valve beneath the tank, once attached the liquid protecting your avatar began to drain.
You watched as the water level began to drop, the ebony hairs of your avatar swaying slightly in the moving water before clinging to the damp avatars body.
Your avatar now laid limp at the bottom of the tank but thankfully a few scientists got the alert of the tank being drained and came to take the tank away making the once crowded room feel twice the size. Checking the time it was now 8am meaning the residents of the lab began to wake.
After a while you finally emerged from the room, locking the heavy duty door behind you.
The same people from last night were sat back down around the pop up table with the same chef cooking up a breakfast. Norm saw you and quickly waved you over, patting the seat next to him.
“So I heard you've started to prepare your avatar”
He says, seeming genuinely excited on your behalf, you smile in return.
“Yeah I drained the tank and the scientists took her away”
You were excited, anyone would be in your position. Right now you viewed your avatar as a separate being, as if it were a creature just sleeping, instead of a shell entirely dependent on your subconscious.
“Eat up, it's a long day ahead of you”
Norm happily commands, pushing a plate of what looked to be a Na'vi impersonation of bacon and eggs. You thanked him before eating the food and engaging in small talk with the rest of the crew, finally learning the names of the people you've shared the past conscious 24 hours with.
The meal was soon finished and a chime came from what looked like an old pager in Norm's shirt pocket. He turned to you with a smile.
“Your avatar's ready”
----------
You looked through the glass and saw the large, blue version of you lying on a hospital bed, wires coming off her like she was prey in a spiders web. Norm was next to you, a comforting hand on your shoulder.
“Jake's just arrived, he wants to run you through everything before you go in”
He says and you turn to him, a nervous look on your face. It felt almost taboo knowing you had a plethora of information on him, having watched his videos throughout the past day and now he was going to see you for the first time.
“Where is he?”
You ask sceptically, the mental battle of whether to feel nervous or excited wreaking havoc on your mind.
“Just in one if the lounges”
You forget Norm had known this man for years, an old friend of sorts. The lounges were an unknown place to you as you had only really been in 3 rooms throughout your so far short stay so Norm led you to the one he was on about and stopped outside the closed door.
“Just be calm and friendly and you'll be fine”
He reassured, Norm truly was an amazing friend, always sensing when you needed a bit of comfort.
With a deep breath, you watch Norm open the heavy door revealing the nearly 10ft man inside.
Both of you walk in and you look up at the familiar stranger: he was massive, a dusky blue with navy markings and white freckles, he was wearing a cross between native and humanised clothes with the most obvious feature being a large machine gun instead of a more primal weapon. Despite his rough exterior he greeted you with a smile, sticking his hand out for you to shake.
You were intimidated and in awe. You looked up at him with wide but calculating eyes before staring at the sizable palm displayed to you.
You snap out of your trance and gently place your hand against his, yours was dwarfed making it look as if you were a child discovering your mother's hand for the first time.
“Sorry, I'm just a bit starstruck if that's the right word”
You apologise nervously, a breathy chuckle escaping you.
“It's alright, the first time I saw these blue things striding around I wasn't much better”
He said, releasing your hand. It was now that you could hear the same voice from all those video logs coming from a very different, bluer version of Jake Sully. Was it strange to say you found him slightly attractive?
“I heard you're going to show me the ropes”
You say, diminishing the remaining tension.
“Yep, although my teaching skills might be a bit rusty if not nonexistent”
You both chuckle at that and he runs you through what's going to happen during and after your link with the avatar.
“I'll start you off as well, can you take us to the link room?”
You nod at his request and push open the door for you followed by his hulking figure. The walk to the link room was quiet and comfortable despite you two not knowing each other for long, thankfully due to the avatar programme this building was built for all those years ago, the ceiling accommodated his inhuman size.
“Does it feel weird, showing me how to do something you obviously haven't bothered with in years?”
You ask, filling the silence.
“It's a bit of a change, I'm used to tribe life now and I'm sure one day you will be too”
He says and you look over at him in slight shock.
“I didn't think I'd be doing anything involving the tribe life?”
You questioned, you wanted to, of course you did, but you were under the illusion that your job was to report on scientific discovery. Jake looked down at you, the striking gold of his eyes causing your own to gaze admiringly.
“Can't have a little old scientist wandering around on her own now can we?”
He rhetorically asked. It felt nice knowing you weren't just going to be alone in the forests during your stays.
“Besides Neytiri wants to meet you, she doesn't trust easily and wants to make sure you're safe enough to be roaming around their forest”
He says with a chuckle. You had heard of Neytiri in his logs, finding how their romance grew sweet and inspirational, the chiefs daughter falling for the outcast impersonator.
Soon enough you and Jake arrived at the link room, the room feeling small once more when Jake slots himself in the middle of it.
He opens up the link bed and pulls back the skeletal frame, his movements allow you to study him more. He had various wounds littering his skin showing the struggles of war and the natural injuries from living in a budding ecosystem; you could tell he was a natural born leader in how he instantly took charge, his presence radiating authority and a protective instinct.
The bed then began to glow as it powered up, the gel mattress shining an aquamarine sort of colour. Jake then pressed his finger into the bed with a slight chuckle.
“I will never get over how weird these feel”
He says it with a reminiscent chuckle, it's only in moments like these where you recognise he was human for the majority of his life.
“Come on, I'll show you how the screen works”
He gestures you over and shows you how to work the technology for the future when you're on your own.
“How does it feel, you know becoming an avatar?”
You ask, revealing your trepidation for the unique experience.
“You can't describe it, you just kind of feel like you're waking up as normal just a bit off balance”
He answers, looking at you fondly, seeing similarities between you and him.
“Alright enough chat, lie down”
He commands, patting the cut out of a human on the bed.
You carefully begin to climb into the bed, Jake’s hand resting on your waist causing you to flush slightly as he helps you up.
You lie down in the mattress, flattening your hands and feeling the strange substance beneath you. Jake explains everything to you once more, sending you a reassuring smile as he pulls the skeletal frame back over you.
As instructed, as soon as the lid seals you let your mind go blank.

The screen flashes to life after a while showing this was an older model, the video then appeared on the screen revealing a man with cropped hair and an unimpressed look on his face. This was Jake Sully - the man you had heard so much about but never actually seen.

After a while longer of staring up at your Na'vi body, you realise you've been left alone, a note left on the table beside a computer. The note had said to turn on the computer as Norm had set up a few old call logs for you to study, the infamous call logs of Jake Sully.
You watched his call logs and like your friend you are baffled about how a seemingly uninterested and simple man like himself managed to climb the ranks of the Omaticayan hierarchy. You were rapt with the videos, watching as the call logs switched from the plain and simple base to the old shacks up in the Hallelujah Mountains, you truly envied him.
What caught your interest about his logs was the evolution of the bond between him and Grace, you could see the disapproval in her eyes as he called the treasured plants of Pandora 'glowing things'. Then you saw how over time he became sickly looking with Grace reprimanding him, the former marine had been lured in by Pandora and now couldn't escape.
The logs only made you more excited to view the outside world through you're newly crafted yellow eyes. However you couldn't help but feel a sense of dread at the thought of going out into Pandora alone with no one to experience this with you.
Soon enough the call logs ended so you rose from your seat feeling a numbness begin to course through your legs. You left the link/incubation room and went into the main communal area where the rest of the newbies sat along with the seasoned scientists, dinner was about to start and the food looked strange.
The food was a combination of both earth and Pandoran food, a new shipment of packaged goods having come in with your arrival, the earth food made up a few bits of dried beans and rice while the Pandoran food consisted of a strange meat. The meat was almost purple in colouration even after it had been skinned, when it was placed on the pan it sizzled violently before developing a charred surface signifying it was ready to be eaten.
A few people you had yet to know the names of, evenly cut the meat into strips and placed it on top of the beans and rice then the bowls were passed around the circle. You got your bowl last as you had sat on the end. You prodded the meat with your fork, it had the same texture of meat back home by the looks of it but you were still skeptical.
"What type of meat is this?"
You asked the question out of curiosity, open to the new experience.
"Hexapede"
The cook replies giving you a soft smile. You had studied Pandoran wildlife and recalled the hexapede as a deer like creature that roamed the forest of Pandora, a common delicacy amongst the natives.
"The Sully family gave it to us a gift, they still visit often to check up on things"
Norm explains to us and you immediately think of the call logs. This meat was provided by the man you had been watching mere minutes ago, except it wasn't him as he had transferred his conscience into his avatar. He had become one of the people.
Norm then makes a sound as if he'd just remembered something, he finished his mouthful before turning to you.
"I forgot to tell you, Jake will come to the lab tomorrow and meet you, he will help you around for a bit when you finally take out your avatar"
You look at him in shock which quickly turned into excitement, you couldn't believe it.
"Really?"
You ask almost not wanting to believe it incase he was just pulling your leg. But you were soon reassured by the chuckle Norm let out and then further confirmation that he was in fact being serious, you were going to meet Jake Sully.
Once your excitement wears off slightly you finally begin to eat your food. The meat was slightly tougher than what you were used to, it had a strong meaty flavour which you could dilute with the accompaniment of the rice and beans, it tasted almost primal. The meat back home is bred to be tender and of a certain flavour but this was obviously meat that had never been tampered with.
The main meal was followed by a dessert of new fruits. Each fruit opened was more vibrant with some being yellow, some pink and some even blue; each fruit hid its colourful flesh in either a dull skin or armoured shell, hiding its beauty and food to potential predators.
The fruits were handed around like the previous meal and you happily tried each fruit. The pink one reminded you of a sweet grape, the yellow like a mango and the blue was slightly bitter that ended with a creamy aftertaste - most similar to a slightly underripe avocado.
You enjoyed the fruits, it made you feel further connected to the foreign world even though you had yet to step foot on its soil.
The group soon dispersed and the newbies were lead to the sleeping quarters, you following. Everything seemed quite bare and basic with the sleeping quarters consisting of hammocks and army type beds in contrast the blankets were thickly quilted as the nights of Pandora often brought a chill.
You climbed into your hammock and soon fell asleep, dreaming of finally becoming your avatar tomorrow.

You had arrived on Pandora after years floating in the abyss of space. The lack of gravity came as a shock after years asleep, making it feel as if you were still trapped in the never ending dream.
----------
You were a scientist and friend of Grace Augastine when she had been studying on earth, she first looked down at you with your lack of experience and youth but soon she recognised your passion and allowed the budding friendship to blossom. It was during your second year of studying under her that she was called to Pandora for a second time, afterall she had only returned to earth after the tragedy of the school and the RDA.
She had only ever briefly spoken about what happened that day but she still spoke of her students with love and kindness, holding them above almost everyone else she knew. Frequently she would tell you stories of the planet and how its buds would bloom with colours unseen by people on earth and how the animals were something out of fiction. It made you crave to go there.
When she had finally arrived on Pandora you were already deep in the field of environmental sciences, even studying samples of Pandora that she had collected herself, that's when she started sending you little messages with pictures of her avatar and the vibrant nature around her. For her she had seen you a mere few days ago but in reality it had been years.
Despite the time between last speaking to her the friendship remained strong and you opened each message with more curiosity than last.
She had told you about the marine 'Jake' that had joined them recently and how he was a complete moron with no respect for the world around him. Only weeks later she was singing his praises and telling you about how she had rejoined the clan she once and still loved.
You loved it all, you experienced it through her but that never seemed enough.
Then that one fateful day came, you had sat by your computer for months, checking and checking for new messages but nothing came. She had disappeared.
After a long while of waiting you had finally sent the dreaded message to the lab she was working at, asking of her where abouts, if she was okay. Nothing could've prepared you for the message you received, a message sent by one of her lab partners, Norm.
Now you knew of her death, it broke you in unimaginable ways. You felt your tie to the foreign world become severed within an instant, how could simple pixels on a screen completely twist your perception of reality?
So you threw yourself at your work, reading over notes only you had gotten thanks to Grace, you knew everything you could about this foreign world. That's why you were selected.
With the avatar programme under new management they decided they needed more hands to help repair the gaping wound left by the RDA and once Norm found your chat with Grace and heard about your work back on Earth he recruited you.
He had a team craft your own avatar for you.
When you saw it you cried. You felt a newfound connection to your old friend knowing she had experienced what you were going to.
Then you were placed on that flight which only about a dozen people were on to be shipped lightyears out into space.
----------
So here you were, your mouth dry, your body weak and tired despite your death like rest.
You were there in the outer atmosphere of Pandora. There was a large window carved into the far side of the ship, through it you could see the planet you had only heard about but dreamt of going to.
It felt new, fresh, it was a possibility of a new life as you literally had a new body to place yourself into.
A few hours later and you landed on Pandora, a mask clamped tightly around your face as you went from the shuttle to the base. Inside was sleek but more personalised than when the RDA had ran it, you felt yourself begin to feel slightly emotional once more knowing Grace had walked these same hallways were you were now.
It was a short walk to where the few humans of Pandora were, all of them were smiling and happy to greet you along with the team. To your knowledge they had picked a variety of skill sets, a few scientists, farmers and even a few family members.
You didn't know what to expect as you walked in but you knew you were the only one with an avatar.
The team had only enough materials to craft one more avatar due to the lack of government funding and it was gifted to you. You were waiting in this small room until a man entered, introducing himself as the 'Norm' you knew so much but so little about.
The others were soon chased off to do there duties, leaving you standing there, waiting for your own instructions. After a while Norm turned to you, a large smile on his face.
"Welcome, now you know we've given you an avatar because Grace had always spoken so highly of you"
You look at him with a soft smile, it was nice knowing your old friend had spoken fondly of you, he begins to walk through the hallways while spouting scientific facts about the lab around you, clearly wanting you to follow. Finally you reach a room with a thick metal door showing it was of higher security, from the gap between the door and the floor there was a soft blue glow.
"Now this is where we've kept your avatar for the time being, it's in with the link room as with you being the only avatar driver here we have to compact the space a bit more"
He says and he types a code and the door opens, inside a glowing blue tank and inside the tank the slender, hunched form of an avatar.
"She, well you, matured on the flight out"
As he says this you barely pay attention, instead choosing to walk up to the tank and gaze up at the otherworldly figure twitching slightly in the translucent substance. She looked like you but with her features sharper - not dissimilar to a cat - the whole thing enthralled you. Norm looked at you with a slight smile, he wasn't offended at the lack of focus you gave him as he reminded himself of the first time he'd seen his avatar.
"It's cool isn't it?"
He asks, momentarily breaking your train of focus, you turn to him with a sheepish smile knowing you've been preoccupied with your own thoughts.
"Yeah, it's a bit of a shock, Grace always told me about how it felt to be part of the Na'vi tribe, to look like one of them. I guess I'd never thought I'd experience it myself"
You state, it was obvious this whole experience felt surreal it almost wanted to make you pinch yourself to just assure yourself you weren't dreaming.
It was exciting, new and it hadn't even started yet.

Another Daryl one for the Mrs/Mr Dixons out there

DARYL LETS YOU WEAR HIS JACKET
•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡•♡
TW: Death (sibling)
Info: Hurt/Comfort, I don't think I've used any gendered pronouns tell me if i have
You had stared at that jacket ever since you saw it.
It's stained angel wings and soft leather practically begged you to wear it but even though you were thick as thieves with the owner of said jacket, you knew he wouldn't relent to your request any time soon. It didn't stop you from trying though.
"Please Daryl I'll give it back afterwards pleeeeeease" You persisted.
"Nah" Daryl said walking away from your annoying ass.
"It'll be just for 1 minute!" You tried to argue your point but he just huffed and walked away from you, though that grin on his smug face showed he at least found your efforts amusing.
After a while you stopped your hounding (for now) and went to go visit your brother who was on the other side of the prison yard. He had a shovel in hand and dirt smeared across his face digging holes for some new fence posts to be put into.
You and your brother are close, your mum had said that you both came into this world holding hands and cried like hell when you were put in separate cribs. That bond had never faded over the years, sure it had sometimes been buried by moody teenage hormones but in the end you'd always come back together.
You slung an arm around your unsuspecting brothers shoulders causing him to practically jump out of his skin.
"Fuckin hell" You heard him curse under his breath before swinging his free arm over your shoulder but you quickly inched away from the sweaty limb.
You conversed in a small conversation before eventually parting ways for you to begin clearing the fence of walkers that surrounded the prison.
-_-_-time skip-_-_-
The fever had broken out a week ago.
Many had been lost in the outbreak, including your brother.
So you now sat my they freshly dug grave with a layer of disturbed soil on top of it, the funeral had finished a few hours ago. Your cheeks were flushed red decorated by trails of tears running down them yet you weren't crying instead you just stared at the poorly assembled wooden cross sticking out the ground.
There was a suffocating feeling of sorrow hanging heavy in the air around you as you sat there oblivious of the world around you. So you where unaware of the person approaching you.
Daryl had never seen you come back after the funeral but decided it was best to give you a bit of time however after you'd been gone for about 5 hours, he began to worry. He made his way outside -donned in his leather jacket- and went towards your figure.
The daylight hours had gone and the sky was in the stage where it turned a dark blue almost black and along with its dark colour it brought the evening chill. You had unknowingly began to shiver.
Daryl sat down next to you and said nothing for a few minutes until he decided to break the silence.
"He was a good man" He said in his gruff accent.
You said nothing but let a few tears begin to fall.
Seeing your paralysed figure, Daryl slid the jacket off his body. He gently lifted your arms and maneuvered your body so he could slide the sleeveless jacket up onto your soldiers making rest comfortably on your torso.
Feeling his warmth of the jacket you so adored you let a small, melancholy smile tug at your lips and you rested your body against Daryls. Instead of pushing you away like he normally would he wrapped his arms around you and rested his head against your hair.
No words were exchanged and you sat in a peaceful silence.
It was just Daryl and you, in his leather jacket.
