I just want to say. I voted for Yang "protecting" Blake from Ruby. Out of character for me? Yeah. But consider:
Weiss sticking her weapon in Whitley's face, despite all the outrage, was a just a gag. And we all know crwby are just shit at writing comedy post v3. Their brains got infested with terminal unfunny brainworms that sucked out the ability to make a good joke from their system. They couldn't make edgy jokes anymore because they realized they had to pretend to be a progressive company, but that inclination to be meanspirited as fuck is still actually there inside their souls it just shows itself in a different way. And honestly listening to Kerry Shawcross trying to squirm his way through an explanation for it was much funnier than the joke itself so I'll give them that. Yeah sticking a gun sword in the face of a 14 year old is totally character development material I definitely can tell you went to a very professional and important school for writing Kerry (and he did which is also much funnier than the original gag also). Did it mess up Weiss' character? Not really she's always been a bit of a self centered trigger happy bitch. Slay ig!
Yang protecting Blake from Ruby? One moment that destroyed like... 2 characters. Blake for being the pussiest ass bitch and Yang for being herself post v4. "But you just don't understand abuse victims!!!" Yeah maybe but Blake was introduced to us as someone who could 100% hold her own. She didn't need to be reduced down to someone who needed to be protected from scawwy angwy Ruby. Imagine v1-v3 Blake in your head and imagine Ruby yelling at her, could you imagine she would have reacted the same way? I don't even need to explain Yang like truly what kind of behavior is she exhibiting where she implicitly choses protecting Blake from literally nothing over her little sister. Um !
Now look... It's common to reduce a ship down to the "soft uwu baby who needs to be protected" guy and the "I will protect you" guy in fanon. We've all done it. In our heads. We've all blurred canon so hard for a ship we enjoyed. Ever read one of those middle aged woman eroticas or just any fic on ao3? It's normal. But when canon starts doing that that's when you know youre fucked, son. MKEK are so bad at writing romance all they did was take the common woobification of a couple that fandoms do everyday and made it canon. They literally just made fanon canon.
Also the abuse victims excuse is dumb as hell they wanted us to laugh at Weiss threatening her abuse victims brother with physical violence (when we know canonically Jacques was not above threatening his children and hitting them if he was pushed to that point <3) but now I've got to sit here and act like crwby gives a fuck about portraying victims just because of a ship. Booo.
They didnt do this with Weiss' character btw. We see her get uncomfortable around conflict but never to the extent of what they did with Blake. The difference? Weiss isn't a part of a popular fandoms ship.

30 min vent doodle of Sasha Waybright I started out to let off some steam. Ended up liking it too much to delete, so I cleaned it up a bit and gave some mood lighting. Guess I accidentally made it part of the set with Calamity Anne. Please do not repost, edit or use this artwork in any way.

The opposition to rewrites in the FNDM is just so goddamn weird to me, given that one of the cornerstones of another fandom I'm in is a rewrite of a canon storyline that had some really cool ideas but dogshit execution. I see people saying that the rewriters are arrogant for thinking that they can do RWBY better than the official team, but no, in my experience even if they are arrogant it's equally possible that they're right. Official doesn't mean "The Best" or even "Good", just official.
Exactly. Ultimately it shouldn't even matter whether rewrites are "good" or not because
a) That's a highly subjective interpretation no one will ever agree on
b) They're written by amateurs for free as a hobby - with "amateur" meaning someone who does not produce RWBY writing in a professional capacity, not someone who is automatically "bad" at the art - and thus rewrites would be at huge disadvantage even if we did want to judge their quality
and c) That's just what fanfiction is?? Transformation??? The writer's motivation is inconsequential. Whether they're producing this because they think they can craft a better story than canon, or whether they simply want a creative means of celebrating it, the end result is still the same: a new, unofficial RWBY product that readers with inevitably compare to the original, favorably or otherwise
So yeah, it's wild to me. I've literally never seen another fandom so anti-rewrite. It's usually the opposite - as you say, a cornerstone of fan engagement - where fans, both jokingly and not, talk about how sometimes fic is a love letter and sometimes it's a "FUCK YOU STRONGLY WORDED TELEGRAM TO FOLLOW." Despite RWBY appearing unique at first glance (from my perspective, anyway) I wonder if part of this is due to larger fandom trends? Meaning, RWBY is comparatively young as fandoms go and I've noticed in recent years a prioritization of canon that hasn't been around before, particularly when it comes to shipping. Some of that is good imo (like the push for queer canonization) and some of it is just downright odd (what do you mean I'm not "allowed" to ship them just because they haven't spoken to each on screen? Since when is THAT a requirement?). Though RWBY is definitely an extreme case, there seems to be this generalized move from, "This is our canon and it's great, or maybe it sucks, but either way it's a spring board for all of THESE cool things" to "This is our canon and it is scared. It is perfect, flaws and all. If you're going to add to it I need a detailed proposal for how this fits into the established world, encapsulates the original author's vision, and maintains characterization even though I'm too young to know what OOC stands for." Certainly in RWBY's case, I wonder if part of it stems from the rise in social media and, as a result, fans "personal" relationships with the actors and writers. When you're seeing a creator's tweets all day and feeling like they're your online friend, you might be less inclined to "mess with" their work; as opposed to seeing an actor/writer at a con once a year, going home, recognizing that they're a complete stranger outside of any fantasies, and then getting on with playing in their sandbox because why wouldn't you? They're never going to know. This is the age of fans sending their fic to actors to read aloud and tweeting at writers that such-and-such had this to say about the show. Though this was done in a cool and positive light, I have legit had a meta of mine tweeted at a OFMD actor and, if the like he gave is any indication, he read it... which is a weird thing to think about considering he was not the audience I had in mind while crafting it. Those kinds of interactions has got to have some kind of impact on fans' perception of what they can and cannot do with the material...
Anyway, today's PSA is that if you want to do a rewrite of any story - yes, even RWBY! - you are absolutely allowed to do that regardless of how "good" it supposedly is. Go forth and get creative. Get messy. Do whatever the hell you want and if someone in the fandom tries to make you feel bad about that, tell me and I'll manifest a Lego in their shoe.
After all, it's not like the entirety of RWBY is build on transforming others' stories or anything :)

I’ll gladly leave Yang falling to the “they were in shock” excuse if it means making the tea thing irrefutably stupid. You can’t tell me they were so fucking shocked by the sight of Ruby laying in the ground drinking tea to run to her side is insane.
Out of morbid curiosity I went back to check and it's nearly a whole 30 seconds (28, specifically) from when Weiss first runs in to when Ruby rolls onto her back, 'dead.' So her team:
Knew she was in an emotionally fragile state post-fight
Knew she was in trouble after hearing her shoot Crescent Rose
See her lying on the ground beaten up
Neo is standing over her
Little is lying squashed in front of her
"Roman" is there saying, "Are you ready to admit the truth? The world would be better off without you."
The tea has a tree leaf sticking out of it
Ruby pauses to make eye contact with them all before starting to drink
This is a group of elite huntresses with superhuman reflexes, making knocking the cup out of Ruby's hands, running to her side, attacking Neo, etc. child's play and, supposedly, their natural reaction. Seriously. We can't justify them pulling their weapons on Qrow in Volume 6, or Yang stepping in front of Blake as their honed instincts when this generates nothing.
Tumblr media
I had a big problem with this passive 'stand there and do nothing' writing when Yang fell and that was with the slow-motion excuse. This? This is nothing but drama. The team stands there because RT wanted the drama of Ruby not only successfully drinking, but the whole world - literally - pausing while she does it, but the cost in terms of characterization is huge.

My god r\/\/by stans are the most pathetic thin-skinned mfs I’ve seen. Y’all really can’t handle anyone saying the show is anything less than amazing. And people are calling Charlie a bigot over this shit? Seeing a meme circulating online and going to the source material to get the original context isn’t homophobic. Charlie has also watched Arcane, a show with explicit sapphic characters in explicitly romantic-coded scenes, and he’s had nothing but praise for it.
It’s almost like it has nothing to do with homophobia and everything to do with the fact that one show is actually written and animated well and one isn’t.
