Between the snows and gales that shoughed
A little girl was born
Far up the kingsroad, past the moat
A world away from Dorne
From dawn to dusk they rang the bells
And ravens filled the skies
To spread the word of Winterfellâs
New babe with Tully eyes
Â
A pretty girl, the bluest stare
And fire in her hair
In time a Lady, sweet and fairÂ
And often found in prayer
Â
Before the seven in the sept
With chants by candlelight
And though that was the faith she kept
She sought the weirwoodâs might
Â
For every morn come sun or rain
She stole between the trees
And prayed for something quite inane
To old gods on her knees
Â
She prayed for love without delay,
For them to right her wrongs,
To travel somewhere far away
With pretty lights and songs
Â
And so one day the winds of change
Veered off and howled her way,
Took it upon to rearrange
Her joy to grave dismay
Â
Because as is the case with life
And any in her throes
The purest hearts are lost to strife
And wishes turn to woes
Â
And so it was, both knights and squires
No more than charming lies
The pretty lights were burning pyres
And songs the burial cries
Â
That nest of snakes upon a stage
She had to call her home
For she, a songbird in a cage
Had nothing but her comb
Â
And though she lied and played the part
She kept them in her heart
Three brothers and a sister andÂ
A sixth who stood apart

Social Distancing with the Starks
The Starks are very into Social Distancing right now, and Ghost would personally like to ask that you stay indoors if youâre sick.

Jon and Sansa are kissing.
Arya walks in.
Arya *clears throat*: Excuse me?
Jon: Huh? Oh! Hi, Arya!
Arya: Care to explain what in seven hells the two of you were doing?
Sansa: Jon, um, had crumbs on his lips!
Arya: And he couldn't find a napkin to wipe them off?
Sansa: They were lemon cake crumbs!

I have to be honest. I feel that a lot of the "eww they are cousins" outrage from some GOT fans is disingenuous. Jane Austin has Edmund and Fanny, also teases Lizzy and Mr. Collins. Bronte teases St. John and Jane Eyre. BBC's Victoria is all about Victoria & Albert who are cousins. Downton Abby has Matthew & Mary. All these stories are popular with a GA. Even in world we have Tywin/Joanna & Rickard/Lyarra not to mention how popular the Targaryens seem with the GA. The "disgust" feels fake to me.
Hi there!
The 'beautiful cousin' is a literal trope in 19th century literature!
And not only in English literature : In 'War and Peace' there is also a cousin pairing : Nikolai and Sonja (although they don't end up together).
From what we see in Westeros it is quite clear that cousin marriage is not seen as incest. Even the Catholic Church allows it in our world.
So, in a way I agree. It seems hypocritical to criticise Jonsa for that.
On the other hand some people feel that the incest is not about them being cousins but about them growing up together, but we'd vfn that is a bit hypocritical. People are fine with Gilbert and Anne from 'Green Gables' although they also grow up together.
I think the problem for some is that with Jonsa it is both. They are not cousins who only meet when they are adults and they are not childhood friends who are not related.
So, the people who think cousins are icky can argue that and people who think pseudo-siblings are icky can argue that.
They are cousins, yikes....
They grew up together, yikes.... (JonâŹrys usually argue that this is why Jonsa is disgusting)
As the example of Edmund and Fanny shows, this exact combination happens in literature (and Edmund really takes quite some time to realise he loves Fanny, because he has known her all his life - just like Emma and Knightley).
To me it seems such a strange argument in regard to the question if Jonsa could become canon. 'I think it's icky' is a valid opinion and not something I would argue against. Jonsa is a fictional couple and they can't be hurt by someone finding them 'icky'. Some people might feel genuine disgust but I think they should check their hypocrisy if they ship other 'incesty' couples (and there are do many in ASOIAF)
But it is in no way a valid argument against GRRM writing Jonsa.
Cousins falling for each over is a literal trope.
The boy and the girl who have known each other all their lives falling for each other is a literal trope
Incest becoming pseudo-incest after a parentage reveal is a literal trope.
So, it is entirely possible that GRRM is completely unimpressed by people who feel icky about Jonsa. It is also entirely possible that GRRM is influenced by literal tropes in his writing. Because writers usually are.
And of course the whole (faux?) outrage at Jonsa as an 'incest' couple is in no way an argument against shipping them in a non-canon way.
Thanks for the ask!
