One of Flyleaf's GREATEST songs! It has such a cool tension between dread and joy written into it: the dread of realizing, slowly, that you have been lied to/manipulated by the enemy your whole life, but at the same time, this soaring, confident joy of of finally being able to admit that fact and do something about it. Such a weird, conflicting vibe for a metal song, but it hits so hard. I love it.

I finally watched Wish the other night. Well, watched isn't really the right word - skimmed is more accurate. I really did try to sit down and watch the whole thing with an objective eye, but I just got so bored with it in moments.
I don't really have anything new to add to the dialogue surrounding this film. My complaints are pretty much the same as everyone else's: the animation looks cheap, the characters felt bland, the music is beautiful but makes no sense in context, etc. But I do think all the discourse surrounding it is really interesting.
I really feel like this is a perfect example of what happens when you try to "overcorrect" a story. There are whole, far more compelling versions of this film that ended up in Disney's trashcan for no apparent reason, other than someone on the writing team thought about them too hard for too long. To me, it seems like an over application of one of Pixar's 22 Rules of Storytelling (number 12, I think):
"Discount the 1st thing that comes to mind. And the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th. Get the obvious out of the way. Surprise yourself."
It's a great rule, but it only works if your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th ideas are each progressively better than the last.
Storytellers... don't fix what isn't broken. Disney has been doing way too much of this lately, across the board. Narrative structure exists for a reason. Narrative patterns work for a reason. They have for hundreds of years. The fact that Disney is even still around after 100 years is proof of that.
Anyway, that's all I have to say. Gonna go look up some early concept art of Asha and Star now! 💫

“Fairy tale does not deny the existence of sorrow and failure: the possibility of these is necessary to the joy of deliverance. It denies (in the face of much evidence, if you will) universal final defeat…giving a fleeting glimpse of Joy; Joy beyond the walls of the world, poignant as grief.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien.

You know how people have started using the phrase “none of my/his/her thoughts are in the Bible” to describe sexual attraction?
Those people have clearly never read Song of Solomon.

There's 5 things a Christian loves to see in a story: unconditional love, self-sacrifice, and of course, the 3 r's, redemption, reconciliation, and resurrection.

Bandit Heeler: “In the 80s, if you got jinxed, you couldn’t talk until someone said your name, and you couldn’t say your own name to get out of it.”
Me: “Ah, ok so Beetlejuice then.”
Me and My Roommate Watching Bluey…
Bandit Heeler: “This fairy tale is about a mean brother who ends up good, a curse, and even a princess!!!”
Me: “…Loki?”

”It’s so over —> we’re so back” = the Urban Dictionary definition of eucatastrophe
"It's so over" may endure for a night, but "we're so back" cometh in the morning.

You know what I just realized? Brad shoots Mobius down about his special interest in the most mean-spirited way... but an episode later, when all Brad wants is to get back to his Zaniac escapades on his timeline, what does Mobius do? He asks him about it. Sincerely.
Brad even shrugs it off ("You don't care about my movie") like he's expecting Mobius to treat him the same way he was treated, but Mobius is genuinely invested in Brad's filmmaking endeavors.
Conclusion: Mobius M. Mobius is consistently the bigger man in every conversation he has, and that's how his friendship/mentorship managed to transform a murderous orphaned demigod into the savior of the multiverse. Validation saves lives yo.

I know that there’s been a million and one Jane Eyre adaptations but I need one that gets the authentic atmosphere of 2011, the chemistry of 2006, the unsettling nature of 1997, the tenderness of 1996, the intensity of 1983 and the eccentricity of 1973. Also I need an on-screen Jane whose wildness measures up to Madeleine Worrall’s performance at the Royal National Theatre. Also the fortune teller scene.
