Yanno looking back now that I'm older, there can be something a bit nefarious about Spider-Man's "with great power comes great responsibility" adage.

'Cause see, Spider-Man exists because of an unforeseen turn of events; a choice Peter made ultimately led to his Uncle Ben getting shot. From that moment forth, Peter vowed that this would never happen again by trying to save everyone and stop everything. New York is full of literally dozens of super vigilantes, and yet Peter (and the narrative) constantly acts like Spider-Man is the only thing keeping New York safe from supervillains and utter catastrophe.

He's no. We know he's not, but because the one time Peter acted selfishly (depends on the iteration - sometimes it was selfishly, sometimes it merely choosing to not get involved) - the worst thing imaginable happened.

Peter Parker is a traumatized high school kid that has literally catastrophized himself into being a superhero and constantly sacrifices his happiness, his personal life, his education, his job prospects, his personal relationships because he's convinced if he doesn't bad things are going to happen.

And that? That just hits really fucking hard, now.

My issue with Spider-Man is the lack of self care. It varies by continuity, but it seems like, in general, the boy’s a disaster putting himself through a hell his uncle never would have wanted for him.

Like, forget the villain of the week. He’s his own antagonist, and what I’m rooting for more than anything is him getting his life together.

Except he’s not allowed to do that, because then the series is over, so I don’t really have anything to root for other than it ending so he can finally take a break.

So Ron "protect kids from the gays" DeSantis has just signed a law requiring all Florida students - from high-schoolers to children as young as kindergarten - to learn about the "evils of communism" and to receive instruction for how to resist "indoctrination" in higher education.

"A lot of these universities will tell them how great communism is," DeSantis said, with no citation of any this allegedly pro-communist college curricula. "So we are setting the proper foundation."

They also decided to make this a spectacle on the anniversary of the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, which was a disastrously botched CIA-organized attempt by armed rebels to overthrow the Cuban government.

"Florida students currently can receive lessons on communism in high-school social studies courses or in a seventh-grade civics and government course. A high-school government class that has been required for graduation also includes 45 minutes of instruction on “Victims of Communism Day” which covers communist regimes through history." Not sure how long it's going to remain, but it seems very....interesting that in the attached USA Today article, there included a viral video of a Cuban refugee (huh...interesting how DeSantis hasn't shipped him to Martha's Vineyard) going through a grocery store in the US and marveling at how full the shelves are; unlike communist Cuba with its shortages of essentials that is totally the fault of the communist government and not at all the product of decades of strict embargoes by the United States. An embargo that recently wouldn't allow life-saving medical equipment from landing on the island during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Obviously this is all culture war bullshit in a state with a collapsing insurance market, literacy that is the 8th worst in the nation, and had one of the largest increases of families with children and veterans experiencing homelessness in the nation last year. I'm sure spending millions of dollars on anti-communist museums is really what the struggling people both want in need in these difficult times.
