You look up from your desk at the entrance of the building as Dave walks in through the automatic double doors of the warehouse. "'Mornin'!" he shouts cheerily at you, his customary smile and wave looking the same as it always has, even if the bags under his eyes are a bit darker than your remember. "Good Morning," you respond, an automatic reply built into your system after so many HR trainings, 'always greet Associates with a smile and enthusiasm!'. "How are you doing today, Dave?" It sounds robotic, even to you, but Dave doesn't seem to take notice. "Oh pretty good, still dealin' with those pesky chest pains though." he responds beat for beat to your previous conversation. "You should probably take a break," you tell him, "you work far too hard." You aren't supposed to say the second part, but you're part of the Safety Team and not HR so you say as you please. "Psh-aw, I'll rest when I'm dead." Dave chuckles, "Anyways, I'm manning the lift again, I'll see ya later!" and off he goes, with a spring in his step as he always does.
His old saying is a bit ironic now given he's been dead for two weeks at least.
It had been a heart attack, you knew because you were the one who began resuscitation when the Code Blue was called. Every member of the Safety team needs to know CPR and basic first aid after all.
He had turned blue before you had even started the process.
You knew he was dead before the Ambulance shut it's doors, there wasn't any mistaking it. The Safety report you handed to HR was simply standard practice.
The other workers greet Dave no differently however, smiling and waving at his usual antics.
"How was the vacation?" one asks.
"Didn't think you were capable of taking a break!" another heckles him.
Dave seems confused to you, but brushes it off quickly enough, saying he hasn't been anywhere. No one believes him, but the conversation is cut short as work begins in earnest.
You head back to your desk and start organizing the medical kit.
~-----~
"Safety we have a Code Blue near the dock, I repeat Code Blue-" rings over the radio, it's been four weeks since the funeral.
Again, you run down to the docks, the first responder to the situation as per usual. Dave is on the ground, blue just like he had been nearly four weeks ago now.
You start the process, check pulse, determine none, 30 chest pumps, breathe. Check pulse, 30 chest pumps, breathe. It only takes 15 minutes for the ambulance to arrive.
Dave was dead before they shut the doors.
You turn in another Incident Report to HR.
~----~
"Mornin'!" Dave calls to you at your desk. It's cheery and bright, but his skin is a odd shade paler than it should be, and he looks more tired than usual. It's been two days since you helped load his body into the Ambulance.
"Good Morning," you respond again, "You look tired." "Eh, just a bit of a bug I think, nothing that'll stop me!" Dave responds, his breathe wheezes a bit as he speaks.
"... I think it would be best if you took a break, you've worked too much overtime as it is." you tell him hesitantly, knowing what the inevitable response is.
"Pssh," he says, brushing you off again, "I'll rest when I'm dead!"
The other workers still don't seem to notice anything out of the ordinary, as if they'd never been to the first funeral, let alone the second.
You sigh, turning back to your desk restocking the med kit.
~----~
Dave leans heavily against the wall by your desk, pale, shaking and clutching his chest. You pull him into the infirmary.
He's had four more code blues since last time, and his skin is a ghastly ashen grey, his eyes sunken into his skull. There have also been four more funerals, but no one's mentioned those.
"You need to rest, Dave," you tell him sternly as you take his vitals. Not a Code Blue, not yet, but it's close.
"I'll rest when I'm-" Dave starts with a wheeze, but you cut him off,
"What, so you can lie dead on the Warehouse floor? What for?" you snap at him, "You think a multi million dollar company is going to comfort your wife when you finally keel over? Tell your kids that you love them?"
Dave is quiet, not making eye contact with you as you shove a bottle of water and some medication into his hands.
It's an awkward silence as your friend from HR stands at the side, writing down a report.
"Well. I mean, I don't wanna lie on the floor here, it's pretty gross," Dave finally speaks up, a slow and weak attempt at humor.
Your friend in HR chimes in, also trying to bring up the mood, "That's true. Besides, you can't die here, it goes against your contract!"
Dave laughs, your HR friend laughs. You roll your eyes and tell Dave to take the damn medicine already.
~----~
Two more Code Blues for Dave. Two more funerals, and each return you see the light die from his eyes more.
"Mornin'..." Dave mumbles to you as he shuffles up to your desk. He's a ghost of himself, all energy having vanished from his body.
"Good Morning," you respond, "How are you doing Dave?"
"I'm... I'm good man..." he says, not making eye contact with you, "Look, have you seen HR?"
You blink in surprise, "Marie is in a meeting right now, do you want me to go get her?" you ask. Dave has never been one to interact much with HR for anything other than time punch corrections after all.
"Ah, nah, don't wanna bug her if she's busy..."
"She's HR, it's her job to assist you." you tell him sternly.
Dave squirms a bit, "Well, I mean..." he sighs roughly and holds up an envelope that he had been holding in his hand behind your desk, "I'm resigning."
You stare in shock.
"You're joking," you gape at him.
"Nope," says Dave, and there's a ghost of a smile on his lips, "been thinkin' about what you said and you're right. I'm pushin' it way too hard here, if I keep this up I'm really gonne keel over. I think it's time to retire."
You can't help the grin on your face, "Glad to see I knocked some sense into you," you're already reaching for your radio to tell Marie to get down here, "I think you should enjoy some of your life at least."
Dave chuckles.
By the end of the day, there's a goodbye party organized and the whole warehouse floor seems to gave Dave a fond farewell.
~----~
Dave passed only 2 months after his resignation. A heart attack. You aren't surprised, but by the way his wife and kids talk at the funeral, they were the best two months of his life.
Some of the other folks from the Warehouse are there too, as per usual. They look shocked and deeply saddened by everything.
Dave doesn't walk through the doors ever again.
Of course, you're still in the Safety Department, and Dave wasn't the only worker under your care.
"Safety we've got a Code Blue in the packing area, I repeat a Code Blue-" sounds over the radio.
When you arrive at the pack department (the first to arrive, per usual), Allison is already on the ground, blue as could be. You start the process, the Ambulance arrives.
She was dead before they closed the Ambulance doors.
You submit another report to HR.
"They've really gotta start getting better materials," you grumble to your friend as you write out your report. She's already dropping the ticket to the Repairs department.
"Oh you know they won't, it's not like they're contracted to do anything once they leave." she says sadly, typing away.
It's disappointing, but she's right. They're only not allowed to die here, it's just not part of the contract.
Your friend always said “I’ll rest when I’m dead,” so much that it became his catchphrase. He says it again today when he came into work, going about his daily routine. This normally wouldn’t be concerning, if not for the fact that you attended his funeral two weeks ago.

Dawn of a New Dream - Chapter 2
“Do you think any of the berry bushes are ready yet?” Dawn asked his brother as he hung from the vines of their tree.
“I don’t think so,” Dusk replied, “everything’s still only got flowers right now.”
Dawn scrunched his nasal ridge in mild confusion.
“The tree doesn’t.”
“The tree never has flowers,” Dusk said patiently, fiddling with the willow branches they collected from the river’s edge a few hours ago, “it will only ever have apples.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because.”
Dawn waited for his brother to elaborate, but no such explanation came, “Because why?”
“ ‘Cause that’s how it works. It’s not a food apple tree.”
Dawn made an annoyed noise in the back of his throat, slipping from his swing so he could sit on the forest floor beside his brother. He knew the apples weren’t meant to be eaten, of course he did! The feelings of foreboding energy they gave off were a tell tale sign of that.
But that didn’t explain why it didn’t follow the natural cycles of life they had watched and influenced in other plants.
“It's still a tree though!” Dawn argued, crossing his legs and putting his chin on his fists, “Why doesn't it die and bloom like everything else does? The apple blossoms would be pretty I think.”
Dusk hummed, setting down his half woven willow branches in his lap, “Yeah, blossoms would be pretty cool,” while he conceited to his brother, he still frowned, “but where would the magic go while the tree is dead?”
Dawn frowned at that too, “I… I dunno. The roots?”
Dusk scoffed, “Nothing blooms on roots, that's dumb.”
“No it isn't! Mushrooms grow in roots.”
“Mushrooms grow everywhere, roots don't count.”
“Apples can grow anywhere too!”
“They only grow on apple trees-” Dusk’s argument was cut off as Dawn tore a bit of grass from the turf they sat on and threw it at his face, “pleh- ew! Dawn!”
“Grass also grows everywhere~” the pink clad skeleton sang as Dusk glared at him.
“This is why you’re the baby brother…” Dusk grumbled as he picked the clippings from his shirt. Dawn gasped in offense.
“I am NOT the baby! We’re twins, so we-”
“Yes you are, I am a whole 3 hours older than you,” Dusk huffed with immense self satisfaction.
Dawn grumbled, crossing his arms as he sat back, “Whatever, at least I’ll be taller than you.”
“Will not.”
“The last Guardian was!”
Dusk frowned a bit at that, “Well duh. He was old. Of course he was taller than me. I bet his brother was taller than him before I woke up.”
“You don’t know that, you didn’t ever meet him!” Dawn argued.
“Well you never met the other guardian so how would you know he was taller than you?” Dusk said as he turned his attention back to the willow branches in his lap.
“Because you told me squirrel for brains!”
Dawn had straightened out his spine, attempting to gain just an inch on his hunched over brother. The smug grin of his face was heard through his voice, because Dusk glanced up from his work with a sly smile of his own.
“Maybe I lied to you,” Dusk hummed with a shrug.
“You didn’t!”
“Yeah, I did, he was really the size of a grass blade,” Dusk snickered at Dawn’s devastated expression, holding up his fingers in a pinched notion, “He was thiiiiiiis big, said he shrunk when he got older so his brother was so much taller than him and-”
Dawn grabbed his brother by the shoulders mid sentence, beginning to shake the other in exasperation.
“Nuh-uh that’s the lie!! You’re lying right now, stop it!” Dawn whined as the shaking slowly stopped to Dusk’s amused giggles.
The expression on Dawn’s face didn’t lighten up by much though.
“... He wasn’t really that tiny, was he…?” the sunnier twin asked, much softer this time.
Dusk paused in his willow branch weaving, taking in Dawn’s demure posture.
It was easy to forget that his younger sibling had never met the previous guardian, didn’t receive the gentle explanation of their roles that Dusk had gotten when he had awoken. Never received the reassurances of care and comfort that he had received from someone who knew what the world held, like he had, if only for a brief 3 hours.
~--------------------~
“Hmm. How odd it is, to be on this end of the lifetime.” a strange voice had rung out in his auditory senses. Dusk’s auditory senses. His name was Dusk. He knew that to be certain, though wasn’t sure why.
“C’mon on then Mini-Cosmo, open up those eyelights of yours and let’s see how you compare.” the voice said again, it was soft, fond, comforting.
Dusk opened his sockets, the eyelights(?) kicking on as if he’d been doing it forever. Patterns like breathing and thinking and language built into his skull, knowledge tucked away in the safety of his mind awaiting the wisdom to be able to apply it.
It was blurry at first, Dusk had to learn to blink in order to clear his vision before the soft orange blob in front of him materialized into a more solid vision.
An old skeleton, bones weathered by time and nature sat across from him, leaning against the tree of feelings (Oh, he knew what that was, it must be important. He knew it was important). The clothes the other wore matched his magic, soft hues of what Dusk would eventually come to know as the sky at sunset, and the soft golden crown upon his head looked like a star.
The stranger’s gaze was so fond, despite the wet trails down his face (Tear tracks, his mind helpfully supplied, though Dusk couldn’t fathom what they were for).
“Well well well, guess we all really are unique, aren’t we?” the stranger spoke again, breath wheezing through old ribs.
“Who are you?” Dusk had asked. The other felt important for some reason. (Brother, his mind again supplied, but for some reason Dusk couldn’t correlate that to the being that sat in front of him).
“Hmm. I don’t think my name’s going to be very important soon kid. I’ve got something better for you though. Would you like to hear a story?” the skeleton asked, patting the ground weakly beside him. It looked as though someone had already been sitting there previously.
Dusk wondered where they went as he cuddled up beside the stranger, warm and safe.
Two and a half hours later, when the stranger finished telling him about the tree, the forest, his life, and his role, he faded away.
Thirty minutes later he had a brother.
~--------------------~
Dusk looked back at his brother again, expression soft and gentle as he tried to offer the same comfort he had felt once before, “Course he wasn’t Dawny, I was only playing.”
Dawn smiled a bit as he looked up, Dusk setting aside the finished basket of woven branches as he patted the ground next to him, “You know, he told me a story, I don’t think I told you this one yet…”
Dawn giggled as he eagerly cuddled up against his brother’s side, both their backs against the tree as the sunset painted the sky in red and golds.

Got tagged in a little thing by @glitchthedemon, thanks! Last song: Faster by Good Kid
Favourite Colour: Yellow! Though I do enjoy green and pink as well.
Last Movie/Show I watched: Good Omens Season 1 is the last one I finished. I have not watched season 2 as tumblr spoiled the ending for me the day it released and I'm still mad about it lol.
Sweet/Savoury/Spicy: Savoury, though I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a sweet tooth.
Last Thing I Searched: Housing assistance in the city I live in, I'm developing a list of resources for those in need at my workplace.
Current Obsession: Good Omens if I must be honest, but I rotate between Pokemon and Undertale pretty consistently in the background at all times.
Last Book: Good Omens... again...
Last Fic: The Rose and the Serpent by Atalan on A03 - cute little Good Omens Beauty and the beast retelling, I honestly wish there was more world building in here because it's lovely.
Looking Forward To: A consistent work schedule sometime in my future, I have changed shifts 6 times in the past 3 months and I am so tired lol. I don't typically tag anyone in these challenges, so if you've never been tagged in one of these and want to do one, here you go, I have tagged you, enjoy <3

So. We have a dog now.
My roommates went and picked him up this morning.
I was not aware we were getting a dog.
He's very cute, but I think we could have picked a better time for inter animal introductions.
Like when I'm not actively going to school, working full time *and* in the middle of house renovations.
