Did a style study of Nomura's art from Kingdom Hearts!

Some things I learned:

>leans heavily on the linework doing most of the heavy lifting. Puts a ton of personality into the drawing itself, with core shadows being done with linework.

>rendering style is actually pretty simple, mostly uses the airbrush. Lots of very soft shadows, hard shadows rarely appear except to emphasize the linework or make certain forms look harder/more 3d, such as muscles and faces. Later on in Nomura's work I observed he began using harder edges for shading more often, such as on hair, but still lots of airbrushing.

>very clever use of colors! The actual shadows are just a simple drop in value from the base hue, but he livens things up by adding more saturated hues in strategic places around it, and being very bold with the color and usage of reflective light on surfaces.

Overall very interesting! Learned a lot from this experience and how impressionable/memorable art doesn't need super fancy rendering to be good!

That FRWBY Volume 6 directors commentary and a lot of the ways you specifically broke things down was really great, gave me a lot to think about to the point where I’m trying to write a full on analysis of FRWBY Volume 6- but actually putting pen to paper is harder than expected 🫠

Anyways, my point being, everyone involved did an amazing job.

Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I personally always enjoy when I have the opportunity to break down my own creative process and go into detail as to why certain decisions were made and what it was like making them. The fact it was a collaborative process as well adds a whole new interesting dimension to working on the project that was also fun to explore!

I hope you do find the time and words to compose your analysis of volume 6, I and the others would love to read it when it's finished! We're always looking for good, detailed criticism to help us improve our crafts and to improve FRWBY in future installments.

Astarion genuinely made me go back to art. I haven't written in years. I didn't have an urge to draw or paint either. But now... All I can think about is this. LOL, who would say a fictional character would become my muse?

I speculated a lot with myself on which of the principle spawn I thought might've come before Astarion, but eventually I decided on Violet because she's slightly more unhinged than Astarion, and that made me believe she likely endured a few more years of torture than him. Plus various tidbits of research suggesting that vampires tend to prefer the taste of their own race(she's also an elf like Cazador and Astarion), and the means by which Cazador would have his principle spawn collect prey(seduction, and what's more archetypically disposed to seduction than a female?). Thus, here we are lol.
