I have. complicated feelings. about self-immolation as a form of protest. I understand why people do it. but I have not seen recent examples be impactful to power structures/people in power; I think it is too easy for them to default into "oh a dangerous crazy person" or "oh it's too bad, they were so depressed :/ because of that we can't trust their political opinions. but it is too bad :/"

but more than that I just think the impact on people in the movement is really rough? like--seeing someone take a dramatic action like that, it makes people wonder if the best or even only thing they can really do is Die--not even "do a thing with a risk of dying" but Die--and trying to overturn oppressive power structures is hard enough on our ability to hope and our attachment to life and our love for the world without that. and we actually really do need each other alive and in the movement and not grieving more people than we already are or losing more collective skills and history than we already have

and it's not that I want to criticize people who have done this. it's that I want to tell people who are thinking about doing it to think again, and to tell people praising it to remember that there are many suicidal or easily-pushed-there activists in the world doing hard work that will never make their names known worldwide, but that is strategic, and necessary, and quietly heroic though it earns no glory, and that in many ways it is harder to live for a cause than to die for it.

I’ve noticed that there’s a certain type of “leftist” who has, like, zero empathy for terrorist victims as long as they belong to the “oppressor” side. One time I saw someone with a Sayaka icon (she would not fucking say that) talking about how the victims of 9/11 were all wealthy Americans and so we shouldn’t feel sorry for them or their families. And now I’m seeing certain people celebrate Israeli women and children getting raped and murdered by Hamas.

Obviously there’s a ton of nuance and discussion to be had when it comes to talking about why these attacks occur in the first place, and many victims that don’t get talked about beforehand, but guys… can we please not celebrate civilians being raped and murdered??? I don’t fuck with tankies, and this is some tankie shit.
