Hi!
When it comes to the business of making content, there is just no predictability. Because input is the only controllable component, whereas output is variable.
Now, while OTT platforms seems to be having a bright future and has certainly helped filmmakers, get going through the pandemic, lately it seems like the BL fans are left confused as to which OTT platform should be they be subscribing to in the first place, since there are so many.
Also,...nowadays, major BL producers sign lucrative deals with OTT players, where they perhaps get whooping amounts to create unlimited content. In fact, I won't be surprised if in the near future GMMTV launches their own streaming platform to exclusively air their BL content, which would obviously be a subscription based model. Not that anything is wrong with YouTube, but for a big production company like GMMTV, it's a piece of cake. But I don't think GMMTV will go that way, given that their YouTube game is pretty strong, and that they have learnt a lesson by streaming "Cupid's Last Wish" on Disney+ Hotstar and making a fool of themselves.
The only issue I have is why do independent producers and filmmakers sell their content to OTT, when they can attract sponsors, given that almost every other BL series has product promotions. And I believe, the overall, collective YouTube views would create more revenue than the one time model of signing a deal with an OTT platform.
So, my question to you are as follows:
Has OTT platforms democratised BL content, but at the same time become a dumping ground for meaningless content?
How does the revenue model of a BL Actor gets influenced when a BL series has a domestic release vs international release? (Take for example, "Triage" which was only streamed on AISPlay, which is exclusively available to only Thai nationals.)
How has the OTT platform changed (or rather influenced) the BL landscape, especially after the shutting down of LINE TV?
Why does certain producers totally neglect international fans, and chose to release their content on an OTT platform that's not available to anyone outside Thailand? (Take for example: "MOD" that was streamed on WeTV, "2 Moons The Ambassador" that's aired only on "AmarinTV34", etc,...etc,...)
I'm sure almost all the OTT platforms has a certain metric in place to estimate the views of a certain BL series to determine it's success, but that happens only after the series is aired. So, prior to airing a series, on what basis do they decide to sign a contract with a production company, especially when it comes to fairly new players in the BL business?
xoxo

Wow! This is an impressive set of questions and I'll do my best to answer them but I feel like this is just... not my knowledge base. I will absolutely do my best, I promise!
I do wanna say that I don't really think GMMTV is likely to create a subscription-only platform because they also air some of their BLs on sub-only platforms and adding their own might make that much more difficult. I suspect their money comes from how popular they are in general and that keeping things freely available is a big part of that. I don't know but they do seem to have chosen that model.
Anyway, onto more specific questions you actually asked.
Has OTT platforms democratised BL content, but at the same time become a dumping ground for meaningless content?
Honestly? I saw worse when so much of it was free on LINETV. I don't think anyone now would pick up The Cupid Coach... thought they did pick up Physical Therapy so maybe they would. I think this goes back to how @absolutebl talks about the exponential growth. It isn't that there's a highest percentage of meaningless content, there's just more of it around because there's more BL in general. This is a metric I can't even imagine tracking, honestly.
How does the revenue model of a BL Actor gets influenced when a BL series has a domestic release vs international release? (Take for example, "Triage" which was only streamed on AISPlay, which is exclusively available to only Thai nationals.)
No clue but, honestly? I don't think international fans are their big concern. They are definitely making most of their money from their local fans and the rest of us are just... also there. This just... I have no idea? I don't know how they plan their money or how actors get famous in these countries. Japan definitely doesn't care about international release, Korea doesn't seem to care too much, Thailand is more focused on it but they don't seem to care much, Vietnam is all tiny companies... the only country we almost always get is Taiwan.
How has the OTT platform changed (or rather influenced) the BL landscape, especially after the shutting down of LINE TV?
My main thoughts? It's made it harder to have an international release and that a number of shows that would have been on LINETV had delayed international releases because they either had to scramble to find someone to release it or someone to put together a youtube channel so they could release it. Otherwise? I honestly don't think much has changed. shutting down LINETV just made the international releases a big more complicated.
Why does certain producers totally neglect international fans, and chose to release their content on an OTT platform that's not available to anyone outside Thailand? (Take for example: "MOD" that was streamed on WeTV, "2 Moons The Ambassador" that's aired only on "AmarinTV34", etc,…etc,…)
Because the international audience isn't important to a lot of these production companies. They're going for the people who are going to buy things, especially sponsored things, and that's who matters to them. International audiences are a happy coincidence, not a Main Goal for a lot of these productions and creators. We don't buy sponsored products, we aren't adding to their local numbers, we rarely go to their events because, well, we'd also have to be in the countries to do it... we are nice but we are not the goal... typically. Not always but typically.
I have absolutely no idea. No clue. Nothing in the world could let me understand or know this. Sorry. This is... I dunno. Metrics are a mystery to me and i have no idea how they choose what to release because it sometimes seems like the most wild coin flip ever.

Hello Key, do you think Between Us will be put on YouTube (publically) after its finished airing?
I feel like many companies are shooting themselves in the foot by making things exclusive to a select (willing to pay) audience instead of making things readily available like putting it on YouTube a la GMMTV.
The amount of views Between Us would/will gather, I feel like, would be beneficial if they had just kept it to public viewing on YouTube as they did for UWMA. But then again, I don't know anything about the revenue they may receive from iQiyi vs. YouTube views.
I feel like it would be beneficial for them in the long run since people will access the show frequently for fan edits or just as a rewatch, etc., and with the lack of availability, people will just watch it off of Dailymotion or download it if they don't want to keep a membership for only one or two shows they like perpetually...
Maybe iQiyi lent them some money to be able to produce the show thus the higher looking quality with the condition that it must be on their streaming service???
Idk if any of that makes sense, just kind of a bummer. I just really hope the quality and sound is worth the hassle 'cause its kinda dampens it a little. I know WabiSabiStudios put their all into their craft especially for BU but it's just the situation of it all...
Hello, Anon!
So, I think the boring reason for this is tied up in licensing agreements. SWS isn’t a broadcasting company like GMM, and they’re significantly smaller, so they’re trying to survive in very different circumstances. It’s a marvel they survived the long, long stretch where they couldn’t produce anything.
Originally they were meant to produce Between Us with LINETV the way they did with UWMA, but they went under, so it changed to WeTV. And then it changed again to iQiYi. I remember in 2020 New made a tweet reassuring fans that the series would be available for free on YouTube, likely because that was the agreement they’d had with LINETV.
The current airing options seem to be iQiYi or SWS’s YouTube membership (for those who can’t access iQiYi in their countries), but I’m wondering if SWS will upload the episodes for free a week later the way they did with 7Project. It’ll likely depend on whatever agreement they had to make with iQiYi.
Basically, I think New had to make some financial decisions that weren’t ideal, but I trust him to find a way for people to access the series as easily as they can UWMA. He’s always been actively looking to get feedback, and I’m sure he knows this isn’t the best situation for longevity and access.
Fingers crossed!

TW// Sexual Harassment, Assault & Abuse:
Post Translation Under Video: Someone greeted us to delete the clip, we asked not to delete it. But ask for permission for Khun Art as well. That we picked up the clip. That we do this. We want to call for justice for Khun Art. No one should have been acted like this.
Tumblr media
TW//: The streets are finally calling for justice for Art Pakpoom after rediscovering video of him recounting the sexual harassment, assault, mental and emotional abuse he experienced under Mew Suppasit's hand. The man is an abuser. Just because Art never pressed any charges doesn't mean the abuse didn't happen. Lots of victims don't press charges (either because they want it to go away or they think people won't believe them) and male victims are especially known for not speaking up about their abuse let alone pressing charges. Also there is little to no physical evidence you can give in order to prove you were sexually assaulted and some times even evidence doesn't hold up. Art was brave enough to come to the internet and speak out against his abuser 3 years ago and was shunned for it. So, I think we should all be by his side now while the Thai community and the internet asks for justice on his behalf.

Why is it shutting down?
no idea, their statement is very vague, & they don't even seem to know if the shows are gonna stay on their platform, move platforms or disappear forever. after having spent 5 weeks downloading 30+ gmmtv shows, guess I'm gonna have to download linetv shows as well... love that (:

So LineTV made a section for all their BL Drama! Now if we could just make LineTV available in like… my country, that’d be great 👌🏼
