This is part six of The Guide! A series about 'what if SAGAU [Name] wasn't the creator, but simply is the only person with power like that who has tried to help Teyvat?'

Aether had set out that morning a bit unsettled. The Guide had been going back and forth quite a lot, appearing for a moment only to leave for another hour.

That and the current state of Teyvat left him feeling a bit on edge.

Earthquakes had become a lot more common recently, the weather changing at a moment's notice to the same thing all over Teyvat, not to mention the light show from the night before.

It looked different than when The Guide played with the stars, instead of a handful of stars, the number slowly growing, it started out of nowhere, the entire sky lighting up with shooting star upon shooting star.

Aether wouldn't normally worry, he had seen meteor showers before but nobody knew this was coming, and this didn't look quite right.

The stars continued even after the sun rose, it was difficult to see but still very much present.

The Traveler had been on his way to Mondstadt that morning to speak with other vessels, ask if any of them had felt The Guide's pulls, but he didn't make it that far before getting an answer to his questions.

Not long before he entered Mondstadt land, the meteors stopped. They look this as a sign of goodwill and kept walking, he debated making a quick pass by a statue of the seven to offer up the oculus he had found before deciding The Guide wouldn't take kindly to him making an offering without them and so he simply kept his eyes on the road.

Until he heard a scream, that is. He wanted to roll his eyes, fully aware it was likely another traveler being attacked by Hirlichurls. He planned to ignore it, you know, like the average person, but Paimon made a noise of panic and grabbed his hand, attempting to pull him in the direction of the noise.

"Woah now, calm down Paimon. What's the rush?" He asked with a bit of a laugh to his voice, he'd never seen Paimon so worried but it wasn't much different than other incidents, he'd handle it if she wanted but there was no need to be so pushy.

Paimon's cheeks grew red from anger as she just kept pulling, Aether followed along, confused but willing to humor his dearly beloved friend.

Paimon spoke up after he started following, speaking so quickly that Aether wasn't sure he was keeping up. "You have to help them. I know that voice anywhere. They could be hurt! What if we can't help?! We have to help. Paimon will help too!"

To Aether, it all just went in one of his ears and out the other, the speed making it difficult to follow, but, Aether was relatively sure he got the basics. Paimon knew this person and wanted to help them.

He nodded in understanding. A friend of Paimon's was a friend of his and even without [Name] by his side, he'd help in any way he could. Maybe he'd have new artifacts or ascension materials that they could put to use on him.

Aether drew his sword and approached quietly, being in the middle of enemies when he began the fight tended to make the damage he could do a lot easier.

He paused however, when he finally found the source of the unsettling scream, a person, as expected, but with no enemies in sight.

Animals seemed to come out of the grass from all sides to get closer to this unknown figure.

[Skin tone] skin nearly glowing in sunlight and a soft smile across their face as each creature pressed its face against any portion of their body that the critters could reach.

Then they spoke, and Aether felt his heart, that had sped up at the beautiful sight, nearly come to a complete stop.

That voice, he knew that voice. He couldn't stop himself from gasping in surprise and Paimon merely chuckled in amusement, quietly speaking to him as to not draw their attention.

"Aren't you glad I brought you over here?" She asked with a smug tone.

Aether's eyes met [Name]'s and they twitched their lips into a smile that Aether recognized as being in acknowledgement before turning back to pet every nearby creature that they could.

He couldn't stop himself, you see. He knew it was them but he needed to be sure

The Traveler moved to their side in moments, reaching down and grasping a wrist that had been resting on an animal's head. He didn't bother registering what animal it was, only focused on [Name]'s eyes that portrayed confusion and fear as They attempted to move away.

Aether simply tightened his grip and spoke in a low and quiet voice.

"Say something again."

He came out as demanding but from the inside, he was begging. Praying to anyone who would listen and to you that he wasn't wrong, and he wasn't, you spoke again and he knew that voice.

He was too focused on your voice to be able to pay attention to the words but that didn't matter.

It was them. His patron, his god, his Guide.

Aether let go off your wrist and dropped to his knees, placing his face close to the ground. He wasn't sure if he was allowed to look up as he spoke.

"Your Grace, our dearest Guide. Thank you for allowing me the honor of being the first to meet you in person."

After all, if anyone else had met them, they wouldn't have let The Guide out of their sight. They would have brought them straight to a place where they could be worshiped, even a non-vessel would understand the warmth that Aether now realized they emanated, clearing away the chilly breeze and leaving a comforting warmth that made him feel as though he could simply curl up and sleep.

No one would be able to miss it after exchanging even a basic greeting.

After a moment, He heard a snicker from above him… from his Guide.

Quickly the snickering changed to full blown laughing.

He risked a glance upwards and felt his heart nearly lurch out of his chest at the sight.

His Guide had tilted their head back and was laughing loudly, joy written all over their face.

Aether took that as a positive sign but he still wasn't sure if he was allowed to stand so instead he watched as [Name] laughed until they almost couldn't breath until attempting to compose themselves enough to speak.

"Y-Your Grace?" They asked through wheezing laughter. "Aether, I'm as graceful as a chainsaw and as destructive as one too. What on earth, er, Teyvat, are you talking about?"

[Name] bent down to one knee to get on his level after seeing he seemingly had no plans on standing up and offered their hand out to him.

"That is also very much not the response I expect upon calling you an alien boy but hey, at least it worked."

Aether stared at their hand for a moment as his brain kicked into high gear, asking all sorts of questions including why they were here, why they were so incredibly kind and why they were so increasingly casual, then the answer for the last one just clicked in his mind.

They were casual because it was him. Their chosen vessel. They spoke so relaxed because he was there.

The world around them seemed to fade away as Aether took [Name]'s hand and Aether spoke again.

"Would you prefer a different title to your grace? Most call you The Guide but I thought we were a little beyond that." He couldn't help a playful smirk from placing itself on his lips. This wasn't just any god, this was his god, they wouldn't judge, they even laugh at snide one liners.

"I'd prefer if you used my name if we're being quite honest, I'm a bit confused about the 'Your Grace' title and wouldn't rather not it, at least not until I understand it."

Aether nodded. "Of course.." he paused for a moment to steal himself to use your name in front of you. It made sense he would be granted the freedom to say their name, it wasn't something he'd never done, his brain simply scream at him how disrespectful it was, how cruel and undeserving he was of this honor.

"[Name], I humbly request you grant me the honor of escorting you to Mondstadt. I swear upon the archons you will get there safely and everything will be explained to you."

Paimon rolled her eyes at the display, sitting on a nearby rock that made a nice resting place as she basked in the warmth of her god.

[Name] was very confused and hoped their expression showcased it, however they nodded. "I accept? Really, just drop the respect when talking to me, I have more in common with a raccoon than a human person, if you can do that, then let's get going."

Aether looked around in confusion. "More in common with a what?"

"You heard me." They replied, hoisting their bag fully onto their shoulders and standing up. "Now then, let's head to Mondstadt. Paimon, are you coming?"

[Name] began to walk down the path once more, giggling when Paimom quickly made her way over, rambling off everything under the sun she wanted to show them about Mondstadt.

Aether stood and watched for a moment before following behind the duo.

The Guide was here, in Teyvat. Aether would help them go anywhere they wanted to go, help them obtain the worship they deserve, anything for the warmth and strength of his God.

Hopefully Mondstadt would show them the proper appreciation, if not, Liyue was a trip he was more than willing to make with [Name] and Paimon by his side.

A Potion and a Sparkling Ring

Aslia x Hina | romantic fluff

a proposal fic? whaaaat???? okay but seriously i've started calling Hina my wife and then the potions event happened so uh. here we are i guess

"Oho, so you're the ones behind the potion shop I've heard so much about! When it comes to fulfilling requests, I heard the customer's wish is practically your command."

At the sound of her girlfriend's voice, Aslia looks up from the book she's reading. Sure enough, Hina is standing there, her eyes twinkling and tail wagging. The rabbit lady blushes, and buries her face in her book to the sound of Lisa's teasing giggle. As Paimon and Lumine greet the general and her companion, Aslia's mind drifts. A bag hangs off the back of rose chair, and this is the perfect situation for ro to make use of it.

A brief tug on rose arm makes rose look up. Lisa is tugging gently on her arm, a silent encouragement to go greet the guests. Kirara, who Aslia is only vaguely acquainted with, is rocking back and forth idly. Lisa greets the guests in her usual playful tone, while Aslia stares at Hina with a wistful smile as ro shoulders rose bag. Then ro basically sprints the short distance between the potions stand and the cauldron where the others stand, exclaiming, "Puppy!"

Hina barely has enough time to turn around before she receives an armful of her girlfriend, but her tail is wagging more than before. Aslia presses kisses all over Hina's face as the general giggles and manages to say, "Hey, Bunny!"

"Oh, this cutie seems to like you," Lisa teases. Aslia pulls away from Hina, rolling rose eyes playfully. Crossing her arms and turning to Lisa she grumbles, "Lisa!"

Lisa puts her hands up in surrender with a little giggle. She keeps talking, but Aslia stops paying attention. Ro is more concerned with rummaging around in rose bag, pausing when ro finally finds the item ro's looking for.

A small box.

She'd had this for months, waiting for the perfect opportunity to give it to its intended recipient.

And now here's the recipient, standing right in front of her, unaware of what Aslia holds in her hands.

"Hey, Shining Star, are you gonna help out?" Lumine asks, causing Aslia to jump and nearly drop the box. She approaches the cauldron, asking, "So, Lulu, what're we making?"

Lumine explains the potion the three of them will be making for Hina and Kirara. One to keep them, and the soldiers of Watatsumi, in peak condition. Aslia nods in understanding as she prepares herself for her role in making the potion. She leans over Lumine's shoulder, pointing out places to put ingredients to make the most efficient potion.

When it's done, Lumine pours it into a heart-shaped bottle, picked out by a blushing Aslia. Then Paimon attaches a decoration to the bottle, whilst Lumine sidles over to Aslia.

"So... Hina," Lumine giggles, "and that little box I saw?" Aslia lets out a squeak of embarrassment, rose face burning. Ro knows that Lumine has figured out what's in the box, so ro just nods a little. Lumine grins wide and chirps, "About time!"

"About time for what?" Paimon asks, poking their head over Lumine's shoulder as they pass the finished potion to it. Lumine takes the potion and whispers, "Aslia's hoping to get engaged."

"Again?" Paimon asks, louder than strictly necessary, prompting Hina and Kirara to glance over for just a moment before resuming their conversation. Aslia pulls out the box again, looking at it with a faraway stare. Paimon looks at rose, then over to where Hina and Kirara are speaking. Then back to Aslia, then Hina, then Aslia one more time. Recognition dawns on their face, and then a smile.

"Good luck!" Paimon chirps, patting Aslia on the back. Meanwhile, Lumine holds out her hand with a knowing smirk. Aslia tilts her head in confusion, before Lumine gestures to the ring.

"Put the ring around the potion neck. Hina sees the ring. You propose," she starts, before Paimon finishes, "Bam! There you go!"

The plan makes Aslia blush, but ro nods in agreement. Lumine holds out the bottle, and Aslia carefully works the ring over the neck. It's big enough - or the bottle neck is small enough, Aslia's not sure - that the ring slides down easily.

Then Lumine approaches Hina and Kirara, distracting them from their conversation. Paimon encourages them to try the potion, with Hina praising it with her usual genuine smile. Kirara tests it as well, also having nothing but compliments.

"Hey, what's this?" Kirara examines the bottle carefully upon spotting the ring. Then her eyebrows raise in realization, and she giggles with a playful, "General, I believe this is for you!"

"H-huh...?" Hina stammers, taking the bottle and staring at the ring. Aslia clears rose throat. Ro's down on one knee, rose hands out as if gesturing to the ring on the bottle. Ro just hopes ro looks more confident than ro feels.

"Hina... will you marry me?"

Hina blushes, her entire face burning red. Aslia can see her tail wagging as she stares at Aslia for a long moment before announcing her answer of, "Of course!"

Lumine, Paimon, and Kirara burst into cheers as Aslia leaps up, and then Hina pulls her into a kiss.

This, of course, is the exact moment that Lisa approaches. She compliments them, her usually playful tone entirely genuine. Aslia thanks her as ro removes the ring from the bottle and places it on Hina's finger. It's a black band, with an amber-colored gemstone in the middle. She'd had to pay Wagner a fair bit of Mora to get him to make it, but it was worth every single one.

"Well, I guess our afternoon tea is more of an engagement party now, huh cuties?" Lisa asks playfully. Aslia and Hina both blush, though Aslia is also rolling her eyes playfully.

"Now I'm really glad we decided to make that delay," Hina giggles to her new fiancée.

"So am I," Aslia replies with a fond smile, "So am I."

I've been playing more of honkai star rail and getting quite into the story since getting to the xianzhou luofu. and while I think people tend to exaggerate how much better HSR's writing is compared to genshin's, I do think it's interesting to compare them and analyse why HSR's core character dynamics are so much more compelling

I don't think it's that HSR has an inherently more intriguing plot than genshin's. Genshin's central hook, with traveller of uncertain origin searching for their sibling, works pretty well, and I think most of the archon quests have pretty interesting concepts too. I struggled to get into HSR at first and don't think that the Belabog storyline was that well paced. both games have problems embedding exposition cleanly into their narratives, so the plots are kind of overwhelming and dense at first

there are obviously a lot of flaws in genshin's storytelling, much as it still intrigues me. But the most glaring problem, in my opinion, is Paimon

people dunk on paimon all the time, but the biggest issue with her isn't that she's annoying, and it isn't even that she does all the talking while the traveller stays silent. HSR has a similar dynamic, after all - March 7th and Dan Heng kind of fulfil that role for the trailblazer. but the key difference is that march and dan heng are both characters in their own right, with their own motivations and reasons to help the trailblazer. paimon doesn't have this

think about paimon as an actual character. what do we know about her? the traveller literally fished her out of the ocean, and she just stuck with them after that. she wants to be a guide, but she doesn't have an actual stake in the traveller's goals at all. We know nothing about her past, and there's no sense of there being a mystery to uncover there. If paimon were actually a developed character, who had her own reasons for wanting to track down the archons and find out the truth about the traveller's sibling, then it would make all the difference in the world.

Because that's what march and dan heng offer. they both have mysterious backstories to uncover, and they're both on the express for their own reasons, so their goals align with the trailblazer's but aren't exactly the same. Because there are two of them, they can bounce off each other and clash a bit more, in a way that you just don't get with the traveller and paimon duo.

it's deeply frustrating, because dainsleif is such a plot-relevant character who clearly has his own motivations, and he was literally the equivalent to paimon for the traveller's sibling. it's a bizarre oversight to not make anything of paimon's history and personal goals. if she had her own stake in the plot, she wouldn't just feel like a mouthpiece for the traveller. she'd still get to be the main expositor who does most of the talking, but she'd have her own reasons for asking questions and pursuing information, which might overlap with the traveller's reasons but would still be distinct.

it is absolutely possible to pull off a silent protagonist well, and it also is totally fine if that protagonist isn't even really the main character. We saw it in botw and totk - link is the protagonist, but zelda is the one that's really at the heart of the narrative. and likewise, the trailblazer in HSR feels like more of a narrative device than a proper character, but the supporting cast around them are interesting and driven towards a similar goal, so we have a reason to care about them all as a unit.

tl;dr: if you are going to make the protagonist's companion(s) the real main character(s) of the story, you need to give them character motivations. honkai star rail understands this. genshin fumbled it, which is why paimon is such a dead weight in the narrative

The answer came before she had even finished her question, a bit sharper than he was meaning to. Something that made him back off quickly once he realized, looking away. "Just... I want it short. I'm sick of having long hair."

All it did now was remind him of the Traveler. Both the one who he called Aether, and how the title seemed to cling to him. He was the Traveler. Just 'The Traveler'. A strange outworlder to be wary of.

He doesn't want that.

"It doesn't have to look good, if it helps. I just want it cut."

Okay finally did the new event and god. I like it. But the first round. God the first round drove my patience thin.

I kept accidentally walking out bounds and apparently being too far away from my partner (MF GOROU IS LITERALLY JUST A FOOT AWAY), and I had to redo the whole thing with the slow walk and listening to him talk about that ghost story and having Itto fling his cow on us not once, not twice, but fucking SEVEN.

Enjoy these headcanons on ways the starting four characters worship [Name] while I debate posting the next chapter tonight or tomorrow night.

Aether

To be honest, Aether has a bit of a superiority complex.

He's your first vessel, the only vessel you've never left behind, your favorite vessel to talk through, any important conversations are done through him, and he takes all of those details to heart with the idea that even though he's lost his twin, he's gained a god who will assist him in every step along the way while he's looking.

His favorite way to worship and thank you for your help is to place himself at the forefront of every conversation about you.

He's gained respect from the other vessels as your first vessel and many respect him as your voice piece, speaking on your behalf with everything, from what foods you would favor based off of what you cook most often to what your temples should be designed as based off of which buildings you ooh and aah at the most.

He views himself as an extension of you and your will, and nothing in Teyvat could convince him that he is not the manifestation of what you believe.

Amber

Amber has always felt most at home in the sky, gliding being one of her best and most respected skills.

As the gliding champion on Mondstadt, there really was no one better than her to teach Aether how to glide, and by extension, you.

Amber feels most connected to you when she's gliding through the air, remembering the feeling of your voice surrounding the world around her rather than emanating from the Traveler.

Gilding reminds her of that slight gasp and noise of joy she hears when enjoying the sky.

Reminds her of your concern in that treasure thief's hideout when she jumped across that expanse, she knew there was some way to make it across but your concern simply enforced that she had to try.

Honestly, Amber feels a bit guilty for not recognizing you when you first met, the whispers in the wind weren't her biggest priority until she focused on teaching the Traveler everything she knew about gliding and words in the air weren't exactly normal, however now that she knows, she's thankful you trusted her to teach your vessel.

She's also thankful that because of you allowing her to teach you, she's getting requests from citizens of Mondstadt to help them with their gliding license. You've given her the chance to do more of something she loves and has put the life of your vessels in her hands, she can never thank you enough.

Kaeya

His methods of appreciation might be a bit outlandish compared to the others.

He's seen first hand the response that using The Guide's title garners and he's rather proud of the fact that as a vessel, he can use it freely.

He feels a little bit of shame for the amount of things he's put the Traveler and therefore, The Guide, through, but he doesn't feel too bad about it. He was only doing his job after all.

Mondstadt as a country isn't very religious and Kaeya is no exception. His worship for [Name] is directly tied to how much amusement and strength they give him and each adventure, travel and battle causes him to respect this being just a bit more.

Kaeya also knows better than to blame The Guide for his mistakes in life and finds it rather refreshing how willing The Guide is to admit when something going wrong is their fault.

Whispers of 'sorry' and 'that must have hurt' or even 'I promise I'll make it up to you' always soothes any injuries better than food or proper healing and Kaeya takes it as a bit of a compliment how much a god apologizes to him.

Kaeya almost doesn't see The Guide as being a god, but no one else could have that kind of power. The Guide is kinder than any god he could think of and he only hopes they never change.

Lisa

As someone with a much more in place job than most other Knights of Favonius, she can't exactly go out to gather gifts or offerings unless you personally pull her outside but either way is fine with her.

Lisa builds up her own reputation by writing stories and religious texts of you, occasionally interviewing other vessels and especially Aether when he's in town, honestly he never gets a break with how many people ask him about [Name].

Her writings are often for the eyes of the Knights of Favonius only, worrying that if she leans them, people will never give them back and goodness knows how much Lisa cares for her books.

Speaking of which, any chance she has to have you and Aether in the Library, she'll take. Showcasing how nicely she takes care of the Library and showing off her favorite books.

Any books that you show any appreciation for will promptly be taken off the shelves and kept for your eyes only, she would rather be fired from her position than let you down by not having your favorite book and Jean knows better than to fire a vessel from her ranks.

One day, Lisa will show all Mondstadt what she's written for you but only once she's certain they understand how well it must be taken care of.

AYYY! PAIMON BECAUSE NO ONE WRITES PAIMON! Okay, okay, actual writing, let's do this.

Bonus, Paimon!

Paimon often gets glossed over in regards to you, by everyone honestly, but they seem to forget a key detail, Paimon never leaves.
