「叱る」を避けようとした時に出てくる典型的な反論は、「甘やかすのか」「厳しさを放棄するのか」といったものです。スポーツ指導なら「（厳しくしないと）強くなれない」、教育場面なら「（厳しくしないと）道を踏み外す」、子育てならば「（厳しくしないと）弱い子になる」など。いろいろなバリエーションがあります。しかしながら、叱ることがすなわち厳しくすることだ、という認識自体がそもそも誤りです。「厳しさ」の本来的な意味とは、「妥協をしない」ことや、「要求水準が高い」ことだからです。要求水準を高く保つことは、相手にネガティブな感情を与えなくても可能です。「苦しみを与える」も同じことで、厳しくする＝「叱る」「苦しみを与える」ではないのです。　さらに言うと、苦しみが成長につながるのはそれが他者から与えられたときではなく、報酬系回路がオンになる「冒険モード」において、主体的、自律的に苦しみを乗り越える時です。周囲の人間ができることは、本人が「やりたい」「欲しい」と感じる目標を見つけるサポートをすること。そして目標を目指す「冒険」を成功させるための武器を与え、道筋を示すことです。繰り返しますが、「叱る」がなくても厳しい指導は可能です。

So, my Japanese isn't great, but I wanted to try to clarify something on here that Google Translate isn't capturing, namely from this part: Saying that there are two types of gates and then defining them both as "Power to bring" doesn't make sense in English. Why make a distinction between the two if you're gonna define them the same way? But in the Japanese, it's not quite the same words used for both: "持ってくる力" (motte kuru chikara) vs. "持っていく力" (motte iku chikara. 力 (chikara) just means "power," so we'll set that aside for now since that part is actually consistent across both items. 持って (motte) is also consistent across both items. This means "carrying" or "holding," like you'd hold a bag or a purse or a backpack or something that you're taking around with you. The big difference is between くる (kuru) and いく (iku). These are actually the kana (phonetic) versions of two kanji characters: 来る (kuru) - to come 行く (iku) - to go That provides us with a nice little pair of opposites, and changes our literal definitions as follows: 持ってくる力 (motte kuru chikara) - Power to come carrying 持っていく力 (motte iku chikara) - Power to go carrying So... they're both kinda "power to bring" but it would be more accurate to say one brings and one removes. Or, if you're feeling dramatic, one giveth and one taketh away.

Emmy's letter to Professor Layton, post-Curious Village. The fabled letter, which can only be accessed properly if you rip open your copy of the Japan-exclusive Azran Legacy Guidebook (more or less).

Years ago, there were photos and a fan-translation floating around on tumblr. Now, I give you the new and high quality version, as well as a full transcript. You're welcome :>

It's been literally eight years since your post, but since your tags say that you wanted to be warned if a better scan were to be made, well... Here you go @puzzilitis x) I'm also tagging @the-azran-legacies, but I'm pretty sure your blog is completely dead since this translation post seems to be its latest sign of activity, and that was ten years ago.

Seriously though, just in case you get to see this -- thank you both so much for what you did all these years ago. Without your posts, I might never even have heard that this letter existed in the first place! Or, well, I likely would have heard of it by now given the fact that I've been documenting every single Layton media I can find -- but I would have lived through an entire decade of ignorance by that point.

The translation below has been done exclusively with DeepL because my free time is limited, sorry for that ^^' If you want another one in order to compare, you have the one linked above, and I will likely make another one later (much later).

タージェントから世界を救ったあのレイトン教授が単なる遺産相続のナゾトキの依頼を引き受けるなんて。まさか…と思いましたが、ナゾには目がない教授ですし、きっと知的好奇心を刺激される不思議な出来事だったんでしょうね。 How could the very same Professor Layton who had saved the world from Targent, now accept a mere inheritance puzzle request? I could not believe it… But you always had a penchant for puzzles, so I am certain that it had to be a mysterious event which truly stimulated your intellectual curiosity.

記事には書きませんでしたが、密林の奥には古代遺跡が隠されていました。 We did not mention it in the article, but there were ancient ruins hidden deep in the jungle.

最初は、この｢マスク男の正体｣をスクープするためカメラ片手に追いかけていましたが、スラム街の子供たちを見ているうちに、１人の記者としてそこに暮らす人々の現状もじっくりと取材したい、と思うようになりました。 At first, I followed this "Masked Man," camera in hand, in order to get a scoop on his identity. But as I watched the children in the slums, I began to think that, as a reporter, I should rather take the time to cover the current situation of the people living there.

Emmy Altava

Important translation note: Emmy calls Bronev "oji-sama," all in hiragana, which makes it unclear whether she is related to him by blood or not (おじ means "uncle," but can also just mean "man who is older than the speaker" (at least from what I know)).

The Eternal Diva novel introduces Emmy as "a beautiful woman of Asian lineage" (and yes, I know, Asia is huge with a lot of different lineages, and I don't know either which corner of Asia is being talked about here), so make of that info what you like. In order to leave it as ambiguous as I could, I replaced all instances of "oji-sama" with "Uncle Leon."

There might be a few other translation changes I made, but I think this was the most important one to take note of.

By the way, I actually scanned the whole guidebook, and I will share it when I can (though don't hold your breath, as you probably know I am currently juggling between way too many projects). The scans aren't ready to be shared yet because they were basically done with me not really caring whether the pages would be perfectly straight, upside down, etc, and as such they need some editing.

(I checked and the resolution of the scans is high enough to make it so that editing doesn't hurt the quality in the slightest. I swear that when the scans are finished editing, you won't even realise it and they'll look just as good as what you're seeing above with Emmy's letter).

The editing also includes linking the pages together for aesthetics purposes. Some pages have artworks that spread over both pages, so I'm doing my best to make it look seamless! Here, have an example for the first double page in the book that really does it:

As you can guess, editing each of the 128 pages in order to get this result is time-consuming, and translating that is going to be a doozy. But let's just appreciate how awesome it will be once it's done, eh? :D

Anyway, next up on the blog is going to be the Eternal Diva novel translation. I'm still working on getting some buffer done, but hopefully the first "chapter" will get out soon! I'd like to post on Saturdays. Let's cross our fingers for tomorrow. Or next week, if today's translation is enough to satiate you all for now!

横浜中華街の朱雀門（すざくもん）あたり

先日、横浜中華街の南の門、朱雀門あたりを歩きました。

以前近くに住んでいた時に、よく歩いていたところです。

そんなに大きな門ではありません。

朱雀門の横にあるセブンイレブン、よく買い物をしていたので懐かしいです。先日もちょっとだけ買い物をしました。

これからもまた買い物すると思います。

私はよく、元町ショッピングストリートの方から中村川を渡って朱雀門にたどり着きます。

この道のりですね。

それから、門をくぐらず山下公園のほうに向かうコースが好きです。

途中で小さなライブバーも見つけました。前なかったような気がしますね。

近くにイオン系の小さなスーパー「まいばすけっと」があります。

この辺りはお年寄りやシングルの人が多いので、小さなスーパーが多くて便利です。

ライブ帰りに買い物もできる😊

先日は歩きながらいろいろ考えてました。

いろいろ思い出して、ちょっと反省することもありました。

やっぱり石川町や元町、中華街あたりを歩いてると、自分と向き合えるからいいです。

自分の世界に入り込んでいる系の変わった人が多いから笑、歩いていても気分がいいです。

波長が合う。

しかし、この辺を歩いていて目に映る景色がなんとなく以前と違って見えます。

それは、私の心が少し変わったからかもしれません。心の世界ですかね。

横浜を離れて4年位です。今回初めて、それを思いました。

そして、コロナの影響もあって京都に帰ったのですがあって、自分的にはいい時期に帰れてよかったなぁと今回初めて思いましたね。

離れてみてからわかることも多いし、戻ってみた京都も、戻ったからこそわかることが多かったです。

なんかありがたいです。

ただいま発売中のジャズマガジン「ジャズ批評」２３５号に新譜「crossroads」の広告とレビューが掲載されています。特にレビューが凄い！いつもは辛口の村井さんだが、本作では、手放しの讃えようで、何だか、こそばゆくなる感じ？でも聴きどころを押さえていて「何推し」かが良くわかりました。

以下はレビュー記事の英訳版です。 The first time I reviewed Hiro Ogawa's CD in this magazine was "NOAH" in 2016. This new work "crossroads" begins with a remix of "PANAKEIA" that was included in "Noah". A terrifyingly technical pianist and keyboardist, I have no choice but to admire Ogawa's determination to maintain the stance of building all the backing tracks by himself. This time as well, there are fusion-funk tracks, improvisational tracks, classical-sounding songs, and progressive songs, but the quality of improvisation as a pianist is overwhelming. . 沖縄Trip - 恩納村・読谷村中心に

はじめての沖縄旅に行ってみた。

座喜味城跡

読谷村の小高い丘の上にたつ城跡。世界遺産「琉球王国のグスク及び関連遺跡群」の1つ数えられる。曲線上の石造りの城壁とアーチ門が美しさに惹かれて訪れてみました。どこに行ってもやっぱり城跡は外せないね。城壁の一部は登ることも可能で、豊かな自然に囲まれた読谷村の眺めを楽しむことも。

併せて隣接するユンタンザミュージアムも見学。読谷の歴史・文化・信仰を触れられる興味深い内容でした。

屋嘉田潟原・恩納の浜

海なし県出身故に、海をみるというイベントは外せない。本土、特に都会の海とは違う透明感、エメラルドグリーンに輝くの水平線にテンションがあがります。訪れた中でもこの屋嘉田潟原と恩納の浜は、人が少なく豊かな自然を感じられるスポットとして印象に残りました。

琉球村

沖縄の伝統的な民家等を移築された観光スポット。小学校時代の社会の教科書でみた沖縄を体験できます（もうおじさんなので、最近の教科書にのっているのかは不明ですが）。ネーミング的にもっと観光客にこびた俗っぽい施設（言葉がよくないですね。。。）をイメージしていましたが、そんなことはなくちゃんとしていた印象。この手の建物系展示によくありがちな時代錯誤な建物が横並びになり違和感しかない、みたいなこともなく、広いエリアを上手に分けた表現で雰囲気抜群。訪問期間中で最も天気が良い日だけあってシーサーの乗った赤い屋根が映えますね。

見知らぬ地では何でもない光景のスナップも楽しい物。まだ骨折した左腕が完治していない都合上、35mm単焦点レンズ1本 + スマホのみとなりましたが、それでも十二分に楽しめました。

Igusa Matsuyama Interview #2 Original Japanese correspondence

Below is our original e-mail correspondence with Igusa Matsuyama in Japanese. This is provided for the benefit of Japanese readers and fans wishing to translate Igusa Matsuyama’s words on their own. The text is presented mostly as-is, though Tumblr ate some elements like emoji. Sorry about that.

Ranch Story の皆様へお待たせいたしました。まずは質問の答えを順番にお返事しますね。

Anonymous asks: 牧場物語幸せの詩の女神様とリオンはどのような関係ですか？

リオンは確か妖精という扱いだったと思います。

女神さまと接点があるかどうかは、私もちょっとわかりません。ごめんなさい。

Tomato asks: 牧場物語ワンダフルライフforガールの主人公の衣装なんですが、I love Kumaのコーデを見ると、Mezzo Pianoというレディースアパレルブランドを思い出しますが、どこからインスピレーションを受けましたか？

春らしい色合いにしよう！と思っていただけだったと記憶しています。（それぞれ春夏秋冬のイメージで作っていました。）いろいろなイベントが予定されていたダーちゃんが、ほとんど活躍しないと知って、せめてマスコット的存在をアピールできればと、シャツのデザインに入れました。

Pansy Asks: まつやまさまがもし、制限無しという条件で、自分の牧場物語の作品を作る機会があれば、どのよう作品にすると思いますか？

私は犬が大好きなので、犬だらけの世界が舞台の牧場物語を作ってみたいですね。

おそらく、叶わない夢ですが。

Anonymous asks: 牧場物語は昔からあるゲームで、時間が経つほど大きく変わりますね。昔のベーシックなデザインと、最近の密度が高いデザイン、どちらの方が作るのが難しいですか？

昔はゲーム上では再現できないことが、とても多かったです。

髪型や服装に関しても、色数や模様の制限などがありました。その制約の中でやりくりするのは難しかったですが、同時に楽しかったです。

最近はその逆で、ほぼそういった制限なくデザインできるようになりました。そして昔とは違って、模様や飾りのようなパーツを増やして欲しいと頼まれます。

ただ、欲張りすぎると、イラストの作成を頼まれた際にとても苦労します。どちらもそれぞれに難しさがあるなと思っています。

Anonymous asks: まつやまさまのイラストのおかげで、牧場物語がすてきなゲームになったと思います。まつやまさまからすごく刺激を受けています！牧場物語のキャラクターで、ワンダフルライフのロックが1番好きです。 21年前のロックのデザインと、リメークしたロックのデザイン、インスピレーションはどこからきたか教えていただければ嬉しいです！

遊び人風の青年とのことだったので、なんとなくああいうデザインになりました。リメイク版では元のイメージはあまり変えずに、更に遊ぶのが大好きな人に見えるよう、服をゆったりめにしました。日本のスタッフの中にも元のロックらしさを好きな人がいて、私もなるべく変えたくなかったので、お互い意見を交換しながらあのようなリメイクになりました。

Jerome asks: Special Comicの130ページに、そこ以外見たいことのないスーパーファミコンのキャラクターが出場すると思うんですが、全身のキャラデザインが気になっていまして、Marvelousかまつやまがなもし立ち絵などまだ手元にあれば、見せていただけないでしょうか？彼らについて何か教えていただけることがあれば聞きたいです https://i.imgur.com/Sh5nvqm.png

ニーナの両親、エレンのお母さん、アンのお父さん、マリアの両親（町長夫妻）など、全員スーパーファミコン版の『牧場物語』に登場するキャラクターたちです。

スーパーファミコン時代のイラストは、ただいま行方不明になっておりまして・・・ごめんなさい。

Raven Bloom, Ryan, and Moth ask: 原作の牧場物語ワンダフルライフのマシューは、若い時のBruce Campbellという有名なアメリカ人の俳優に似ていて、いいなと思っていたのですが、まつやまさまはリメークした男性結婚候補はどのように思われていますか？もともと結婚候補じゃなかった男性たちがそうなった時、どう思われましたか？ https://i.imgur.com/FAQGmOz.jpeg

マシューは、日本の『ワンダフルライフ』での名前はマッシュとなっております。この名前を初めて聞いた時、真っ先に浮かんだのが『EVIL DEAD』シリーズの主人公であるアッシュ。

そう、ブルース・キャンベルさんをイメージしてデザインしました。

私は今も、ブルース・キャンベルさんが大好きです。

最初の『ワンダフルライフ』制作当初は、女性主人公のバージョンは作らないと聞いていたので、彼は恋愛対象ではなく個性的なキャラクターとしてデザインしていました。

リメイク版では男性結婚候補として登場することが分かった状態での再デザインだったので、幅広く好かれるようなデザインに変更しました。

懐かしさ以上に、パワーアップした新作として楽しんでいただければ嬉しいです。

Salmon Axe and Anonymous ask: 個人的にドラえもん版の牧場物語が大好きなんですが、将来牧場物語以外で、コラボでも、イラストを担当してみたいなと思う作品がありますか？ゲストアーティストとして出たいなと思う作品はありますか？(もしかしてポケモンとか？)

『ドラえもん』の漫画は、子供時代から大好きです！

ゲストアーティストをやりたいか？と言われれば・・・ゲストではなくメインの仕事の方がありがたいので、特にないです。『Fallout』『Far Cry』『Border Lands』など、プライベートではいろんなゲームを楽しんでます。

Anonymous asks: 噂のワンタタンの隠されて��る顔なんですが、着ぐるみなしのデザインはあったりしますか？

ワンタタンはワンタタンという生き物だと思いながらデザインしたので、着ぐるみなしのデザインはありません。

Idris asks: まつやまさまが流行に敏感で、今のデザインは昔のと大きく変わったように感じます。牧場物語の新しい作品で、昔みたいなベーシックなデザインを使おうと思われたことありますか？まつやまさま的に自分のデザインの魅力はなんだと思われますか？

『牧場物語』の仕事におけるデザインのこだわりは、作品内容に合った頭身と雰囲気のキャラクター作りだと思っています。まずクライアントの希望を聞いて、それに沿ったデザインを考えます。

最近はゲーム内のビジュアルも豪華になってきたので、なかなか頭身の低いキャラクターが登場できないですね。

私にとってデザインのこだわりは「遊び心」でしょうか。

綺麗やかっこいいというものよりも、親しみやすかったり楽しかったり、そんなキャラクターを生み出すことに喜びを感じています。

MacGyver asks: わださまが前に一番最初に出たスーパーファミコンの牧場物語の開発がどれほどケオスだったかの話し聞いた事あるのですが、まつやまさまはあの時の思い出話はありますか？

今となっては、笑い話ですが・・・どこまで話していいのか分からないので、ご容赦ください。

あの時、和田さんがいなかったら、『牧場物語』シリーズは生まれなかったと思います。

Toyherb asks: 牛のデザインが豊かになりましたね。どれを描くのが1番楽しいですか？

私は子供の頃から、動物の絵を描くのが大好きでした。

なので、どの牛の絵も大好きですよ。

描きやすいのは鼻の大きな牛ですけどね。

Anonymous asks: 主人公と異性のキャラクターデザインは、描いたけど最終的に使われなかったのはありますか? 例えば、牧場物語3・牧場物語シュガー村とみんなの願いの女性版の主人公とか、牧場物語ワンダフルライフまで、ノンバイナリーの主人公などです。よろしければ、その絵も見せていただけたらすごく嬉しいです!

ボツになったデザインは山ほどありますが、設定自体がボツになったようなキャラクターは、特になかったように記憶しています。（後述の親指姫を除きます。）

Koharu asks: スーパーファミコンのエレンが牧場物語2に出たように、他の作品に出るつもりだったスーパーファミコンのキャラクターはありますか？例えばですが、牧場物語2のマリーは髪の毛が黒ですが、青色のマリーが載ってるマガジンも見たことあります。もともとスーパーファミコンのマリーが64に登場するつもりだったのかなと思って、聞いてみました！

他の作品のキャラクターを登場させるなど、シナリオや設定を作る立場にはないので、私にはわからないです。でも昔のキャラが登場したら、私も楽しいなと思います！

Bunbun asks: 最近発表されたクレアのねんどろいどがすごく楽しみです！牧場物語2のキャラクターのねんどろいども出たらいいなと思います。まつやまさまのブログに、フィグアよく見かけますが、自分がデザインしたキャラクターをうちのコレクションに入れるのはどんな気持ちですか？クレアの他に、このキャラクターがフィギュアになれたらいいなと思うキャラクターはありますか?

私もとても楽しみにしているんですが、いつ発売されるのでしょうね？

Chickee asks: 牧場物語2の噂の紫色の髪の毛のお姫さまなんですが、最終的に登場はしなかったけど、もしかしてまつやまさまがそのキャラクターをデザインしましたか？

おそらく「親指姫」だと思います。

とても小さなキャラじゃなかったですか？

一応デザインはしたものの、最終的には登場しませんでした。『牧場物語2』のキャラクターといえば、ペットに亀を入れて欲しいと無理なお願いをしたのですが、最終的には置物として登場。

『ワンダフルライフ』の際に、再度お願いしてスカーフ付きのリクガメをデザインしたのですが、ペットにはなれなかったものの池のそばを歩く野生の亀として登場しました。

いつかゲーム中で、カメをペットとして飼える日が来て欲しいものです。

Emery Flower 147 asks: 牧場物語ワンダフルライフの女性たち3人がチームを組んでいて、ムームーが銃声を持っていたりするマンガが目に入って、オーマイガー！！と思いましたが、他に誰かチームを組んでかっこよく活動しそうなキャラクターはありますか？

『ミネラルタウンのなかまたち』の攻略本の時には、ポプリ、マリー、ラン、エリィ、カレンの5人をコロボックルにして活躍してもらいました。あとは

ピート（昔の男主人公）とサラ（��ームボーイ版の女主人公）、そしてクレアの3人は、攻略本の時に好き勝手に描きました。かっこいいかどうかはわかりませんが、この3人を動かすのは楽しかったです。

Ixur asks: 私が住んでいる地域で、牧場物語オリーブタウンと希望の大地のキャラクターの多く、例えばベス、みさき、クレメンス、ラーシュが結構人気です。それ、まつやまさま、Marvelousも認識していることですか？

マーベラスとはそういったお話をあまりしないので、先方が認識しているかは知りません。私はSNSをやっていないので、どのキャラが人気なのかは知りませんでした。でも、どのキャラでも気に入っていただけるのはとても嬉しいです。ラーシュのシャツの模様は私の愛犬がモデルなので、彼のシャツも気に入ってもらえると更に嬉しいです。

Anonymous asks: まつやまさまがデザインしたキャラクターをコスプレされるのはどんな気持ちですか？

とても嬉しいです！私は裁縫がとても苦手なので、自分で服を作ってしまう人を尊敬しています。私がデザインした服を実際に作ってもらえるなんてとても光栄ですし、皆さんがキャラクターを演じて楽しむのも素敵だと思います。

Afro Fae asks: キャラクターデザインする時に、色選びはどうやってしてますか？色の雰囲気をキャラクターの性格に合わせるか、なんとく選んでいますか？

クライアントからイメージカラーを伝えられた時は、それを意識してデザインします。こんな色の方が似合うのでは？と思った時は、こちらから提案することもあります。遠くから見てすぐにどのキャラかわかるように、色もそれぞれに特徴が出るよう気をつけています。ただ、家族などは逆に共通のカラーを入れたりして、まとまりを持たせたりする時もあります。

また質問に答えてくださるのは本当に嬉しいです。何を聞けばいいか分からないけど、とにかくまつやまさまの絵が好きだ！！と言っているファンたちもいて、それも伝えたかったです。今までデザインしたキャラクターが好きだし、これから制作するデザインもお楽しみにしています！！
