He knows her. Her face pale and shaking in the guard's lights when they took them to their own hell, her hands in his hair, the small moments of mercy where she let him sleep curled next to her. He had missed someone then but the name is gone and he is just happy for something soft again.

What is The Sweet Smell of Bread 🥖 🍞 ?

Sweet Smell of Bread it's my WW2 Fic I started, Peeta and his brothers are drafted. And Katniss and all of the women are left behind. You live their romance through letters and his leaves.

This is from Chapter 2:

“Peeta,” Katniss whispered. She knew the world around her was going to change, she felt it in the pit of her soul.

Peeta wrapped his arms around her slim waist. The life they led in their District Twelve known as Willow, Virginia was about to change in their small rural community. She stood buried her face into his chest wanting to block out everything. Her small body trembled with the news. But his scent of bread, cinnamon and dill soothed her. Her racing heart settled and for a brief moment everything was possible and right.

“It’ll be okay Katniss, we’ll be okay,” Peeta murmured into her ear.

Katniss nodded, feeling safe and sound within the shelter of his arms.

“Do you think we’ll go to war, Peeta?” Katniss couldn’t help the tremble in her voice. She was glad in a way they’d been paired together in class, in a project that had made them have a fake marriage to prepare them for life after school. Katniss didn’t like it but it had gotten them closer. Now with the attack, she could feel him slipping from her. Peeta held her tightly as she began to shiver a little.

It was comforting to be able to for once in her life not have to be the strong one. Normally she had to bottle up her true feelings and act strong for others. Her mother, despite the hatred of Katniss's way of life depended on the fresh meat and revenue. Prim needed to be emotionally strong, when their mother slipped into that quiet world of hers.  Peeta was the only one who comforted her and allowed her to be vulnerable.  She gripped him tighter.

 “I hope not, but I don’t see how we can avoid it,” his tone was gentle.

She was surprised by his answer. “I hope we don’t, I hope we can stay out of it.”

“Me too, Katniss, me too,” Peeta answered as he gave her a tighter hug.

Feeling lighter she released her hold on him.

Peeta placed a kiss on her forehead. They stood in the bakery staring at each other.  He was her hope, and his optimism helped her. The doorknob of the backdoor jiggled just as the Chicago Round Table was interrupted to state the Japanese were attacking Manila. Peeta comforted Katniss.

Mr. Mellark walked in and stood still with his eyes closed listening to the news. He arched eyebrow as he glanced at them. “Katniss, go home to your family.”

Katniss nodded. She picked up her game bag.

Peeta followed her, pressing two warm loaves of bread in her hands.  “Katniss we’re going to be okay, no matter what happens.”

Katniss didn’t have words but hugged him before she ran out of their backyard. She shyly reached up on tippy-toes and kissed him on the cheek before she quickly left the backyard of the bakery.
