#1) asshole/morally grey characters are not the only type of characters who are complex or compelling

There’s a weird recurring take in D20 fan circles that Zac doesn’t play “complex” characters and that people are just waiting for the day when he “finally” plays an asshole, which kind of baffles me.  Quite apart from the idea that only morally grey characters are complex or compelling, are you sure we’re watching the same show?
In Fantasy High, we have Gorgug, an adopted biracial teenager whose journey includes realizing his self-worth, coming to terms with his rage (literally), seeking out and navigating new relationships with others (his birth parents, the Bad Kids, Zelda), and discovering what he’s capable of.
From The Unsleeping City we have Ricky, a second-generation Japanese-American, who has a very personal struggle across two seasons between doing the dutiful/sacrificial thing for other people’s benefit and expressing his own needs, wants, thoughts, and feelings; it’s a very particular exploration of immigrant generations and the relationship between the sacrificial model of your ancestors and the culture you grew up surrounded by which emphasizes the self.
There’s A Crown of Candy and Lapin, whose snark and one-liners are honestly less interesting than the way he engaged with and sought to understand religion and faith; the different yet similar ways in which both the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Church exerted control over their followers, and the search for spiritual meaning beyond these figures/institutions.
Then there’s Cumulous, whose every character aspect navigates a space of tension - the ultimate war guy who made himself hardened (literally) and pragmatic to get the job done but who also remains soft and caring and empathetic at the same time; wielding the power of death without glorifying or giving into it; the cousin who both is a member of the family and yet who remains at somewhat of a distance from the centre; a literal warrior-philosopher who is single-minded in battle and quietly thoughtful about the mysteries of life and death outside of it.
As for actual assholes, we have Norman Takamori in A Starstruck Odyssey, a bitter man who is the living embodiment of both the Superior Orders excuse as well as scapegoating.  On a side note, the amount of absolute vitriol and double standards which people threw at Norman during ASO for being an unapologetic asshole -and he had less than two full episodes of screen time- kind of underscores the calls for Zac to play a “real” asshole.  Zac can and will play whatever type of character he wants, but is fandom really ready for him to play an asshole if that asshole doesn’t have a secret heart of gold?
From the same season, we have Valdrinor/Skip, who starts as the “prince running from his destiny” archetype with a dash of brain slug possession, has a humorous yet oddly profound exploration of what humanity is and what it means to be human, and springboards from there into “wait, who am I really and actually, why are we doing things (brain slug possession) this way when there are other ways to engage with the universe.”
Most recently in Neverafter, we have Pib, who apart from the fascinating meta element of being a literal character archetype, constantly straddles the line between self-absorbed self-interest and putting himself on the line to help others; his repeated demonstration of both at various points throughout the season is a subtle yet intriguing manifestation of free will and choice-making in a story all about lacking free will and agency.
So, I mean, lack of complexity where?  Does a character need to be an asshole in order to be deep or compelling?  And because I’ve heard this specific rebuttal quite a few times now, does a character need to vocalize their innermost thoughts loudly and frequently in order to prove their complexity?  If a character is “less vocal” compared to other characters, does that mean they lack interiority?
Also, other people have brought this up before, but I am once again asking that people remember the difference between fictional characters and real life people.  Zac playing one (1) himbo on the show does not make him a himbo in real life, nor does it make him incapable of creating or playing complex characters (especially as said himbo is himself an extremely complex character), nor does it make him a lesser player than other cast members.  You don’t have to find all or any of his characters interesting or complex, but can we stop conflating character with player?

Not here to excuse Samson's actions, but I do find it weird that the writers had a street beggar sell a young boy/man to slavery because said boy/man didn't have money, and Samson needed money for his addiction to lyrium. I just feel like this writing decision definitely came from the writers's ableism, their apparent view of beggars as bad, unreliable or greedy. In DAO, you can encounter a beggar in the alienage who turns out to just want free money, and another beggar in DA2 who turns out to be demon-possessed the next time you meet her. Samson may have done wrong, but it feels like the writers want to make it out that beggars are just plain unreliable. My thoughts on this, anyway.
so like. which is it. is his writing ableist or classist. schrodinger's writing, where it's both ableist or classist based on whatever you need it to be to make samson morally pure?
i never said he sold anyone into slavery knowingly. what i did say was that samson is not a Good Templar because 1. he goes back to the templars given the opportunity, unlike OTHER TEMPLARS that we KNOW leave the order, 2. maybe when he's taking money from incredibly desperate people or working with incredibly desperate and vulnerable people, he has due diligence and a duty to make sure whoever he is sending them to isn't going to put them on a fucking ship to tevinter to be sold. like. i don't know how much clearer i can make it at this point - samson was always morally grey. and i do think there's ableism touching his writing - as there is touching a lot of the writing concerning disabilities and addiction in da (one of my more unpopular opinions is that ending da2 with meredith's death is ableist, after all) - but that doesn't like... mean that Did Not Happen? the samson thing with feynriel wasn't a retcon added in later to make him look back, it was something that did, in fact, happen? and i really don't think that the problems with samson's writing boils down to wanting to give out a specific message about beggars in da.
(you have plenty of beggars in dao that are never treated like that - notably in the alienage, but also in lothering. usually you're the one that can be an asshole to people begging for money, and to me, it's pretty clear you're the asshole for it.)
like. if you had argued that it was to paint a Certain Type of Addict to look bad, then i do agree, but this really just feels like a Reach. samson, within the context of the narrative, made decisions that he should be responsible for. and there's definitely off-putting aspects around his writing - specifically, around his addiction - but i don't ever really agree with the solution to engaging with that kind of writing to be "let's just pretend it didn't happen". how do we recontextualise what he did? how do we rewrite it so that he still retains complexity without putting off awful implications about addicts as a whole? (and the easiest solution to me, here, would be to parallel him to someone like keran - who, unlike samson, willingly left the order and will willingly go through lyrium withdrawal and have to deal with that, when it's made clear his entire household was depending on his templar paycheck for survival.)
and like. i promise you, i really think you can just. like samson. and he can be kind of morally ambigious and morally grey and you can still just enjoy him as a character and still feel a great lot of sympathy and love for his situation regardless. you don't need to sand off his edges to make him more palatable to me - what's important is that you enjoy him as a character. and that's fine? i certainly don't think you're an irl piece of shit for enjoying him as a fictional character? i certainly still think he's interesting? i only indicated that my opinions around aspects of his character had changed/evolved? so like? go ahead and enjoy him???

Mikasa Ackermann, Levi Ackermann, Amane Misa, Aeron Greyjoy for the charactet ask :3
SOMEONE HEARD MY PRAYERS AND NOW MY TIME HAS COME, tysm!!!!! <3
okay, let's start with levi (my beloved):
general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life (THEE little feral anime man after my heart)
hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would bang (Dark, Tall and Snarky + piercing grey-blue eyes and chronic insomnia? clearly my type ❤)
hogwarts house: gryffindor (maybe....?) | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff
ugh, the hp sorting house system is way too reductive. he has qualities of gryffindor, slytherin, and hufflepuff - brave, astute, loyal to a fault, etc. so it's a hard choice. but if i really have to choose, i'd go for gryffindor. i know that his Bad Boy facade shouts slytherin, but while he has larger goals (killing all the titans, then saving the world etc.), he's got no actual ambition for himself. hufflepuff would also be a good option.
daemon (from the his dark materials series): (because i've just decided that's just way more accurate than the hp method) some kind of big feline. maybe a panther - a black panther would be the ideal - aloof, predatory, dangerous, fiercely independent.
best quality: besides his obvious strenghts as a leader and warrior, the way he cares for his comrades-in-arms. it's very hard to gain his trust and respect, but once you have it, it's forever. he's pragmatic and ruthless, yes, but he also has a huge capacity for compassion and friendship. not that he would be effusive about his affections, of course.
worst quality: none, he's absolutely perfect ❤ jklsdfhjk jokes aside, he really struggles to open up (a serious understatement), idt he ever talked about his traumatic past with anyone. i mean, maybe he mentioned it to hange and erwin (erwin knew him when he was still an undergound thug, so...), but... he's not great with feelings. despite his apathetic, intimidating mask, he feels and cares deeply, but he has a long history with losing the people he loves, so he tries to not personally care about his squadmates, which can be both a strenght and a weakness. of course, he spectacularly fails at this.
ship them with: well, it's not a secret that i'm a huge rivamika fan, this ship is almost literally consuming my waking thoughts lmao. imo they're perfectly compatible: very similar personalities (stoic, the strongest warriors, absolutely terrifying on the battlefield but with a soft underbelly), very similar pasts/experiences, so many parallels that it's actually ridiculous, etc. i love how they're both each other's equals and likeness (yes, i took it from jane eyre. no, i don't regret anything lmao). a lot of tropes i love, too: Terrible First Impression (the Pride and Prejudice vibes are so strong with these two, you have no idea), Kindred Spirits/Mirror Images, Veteran/Young Prodigy, The Last of Their Kind, even Height Difference lmao. i could write a whole rivamika manifesto, but this is already too long. (maybe for some other time 👀) i would've loved for their dynamic to be more explored in canon but alas, isayama clearly didn't give a shit about the ackerman legacy, he just used it as a plot shortcut to give them conveniently unique powers, since they never really talked about it 🙄 (and before some troll comes into my askbox shouting "you iNcEsT fReAk!!!!1!!", they're only very distantly related. we know shit about the ackermans but we know for sure that they've got at least several generations between them. biologically their shared DNA is 0%, obviously they don't see each other as family, all the eldians have a dead ass common ancestor from 2000 years ago so they're all basically ⁓related anyway. if you really wanna scream about i.ncest, go watch got/dark/the borgias and shut the fuck up please. or alternatively go outside and touch some grass) sorry for the rant, uh. anyway, i can also see levi/erwin. idk if i'd ever care enough to read a fic about them (i'm usually a huge multishipper, but for some weird reason not when it comes to rivamika? same with braime and kastle tbh), but still, i can see it.
brotp them with: hange and erwin, obv. veteran trio >>> ema trio, sorry not sorry (at least h. and e. died before yams had the chance to ruin their character arcs)
needs to stay away from: ...uh, filth, i guess? lmao
misc. thoughts: besides the stupid teenage fangirl crush i have on him, i'm genuinely fascinated by the man himself. he's a huge mess of a contradictions, and yet somehow it works: he's violent and brash and kind of an asshole, but also has a strong moral code and integrity; he's obv very skilled at all the killing/torturing stuff and yet he has a huge respect for life; he's got a potty mouth to say the least, and yet some very aristocratic manners/tastes (the way he sits, his preference for tea and usually refined clothes); he comes from what's supposed to be an illustrous bloodline, he's methodical and very precise, and yet he was born and raised in the underground, he's been used to filth and blood and poverty since he was a child, kenny of all people was his father figure, and probably has known no other life than a perennial survival mode existence. he's "humanity's strongest soldier", but while well-built he's also small, the david to the titans' goliah, and probably not what people would assume a born warrior looks like. he's also one of the few characters who stayed true to himself and his original characterization until the end, bless you smol king ❤
(okay, this is getting long!)
mikasa:
general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them (so much. she deserved better ❤️) | actual love of my life
hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! (stunning lady ❤) | 10/10 would bang
hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff
this is actually easy: mikasa belongs to hufflepuff and no, i won't take criticism (just joking lol). enough with this "hufflepuffs are fluffy puppies/Cinnamon Rolls <3" thing: mikasa values loyalty and duty more than anything else. she's also hardworking... and fierce, strong, lethal. yes, hufflepuff and lethal are not mutually exclusive concepts.
daemon: (finally the better option) a she-wolf, fiercely protective of her pack.
best quality: loyal, brave, incredibly strong (alongside her more fragile qualities). practical and level-headed on the battlefield, at least when eren is not included in the picture.
worst quality: struggles to let go of the past (understandable, considering her trauma). tunnel-vision when it comes to eren, obv. extreme levels of delusions ("if only i spoke openly about my romantic feelings for him - as if i didn't made them abundantly clear in ⁓6 years - he wouldn't kill 80% of humanity :(((" lmao okay. just. okay), but that's more on the writing. she's sadly more static than any other main character throughtout the whole series.
ship them with: see above :) but recently i've also started to be intrigued by mikasa/annie and mikasa/sasha. also, i'm sympathetic to jeankasa fans, though i don't actually care for the ship.
brotp them with: EMA trio, especially armin+mikasa. their friendship is so beautiful and special. also sasha.
needs to stay away from: ...... eren, at least romantically. again, that's more on the writing than anything else, but e.remika unfortunately encompasses many tropes i loathe with all the strength of my old shriveled heart: childhood friends-to lovers where the (male) childhood friend doesn't acknolewdge/is completely indifferent to the other (female) friend's romantic feelings, she hopelessly pines for him for years without anything more than a cold shoulder... until in the last chapter it's revealed that he loved her all along and doesn't "want other men to have her!!! :((" (then why did you have no reaction whatsoever to jean's years-long crush on her while she was jealous of any vaguely female-shaped human being you were friendly to, including hange? are you that dumb, man?); the female character's development and entire arc 100% revolves around the male protagonist - she has no goals, no dreams of her own except staying with him forever and ever; the romance is based on an idealized childhood dream, therefore reaffirming those childish illusions would make the character regress, not actually grow up (and nope, epilogue!jk doesn’t count; that also lacks build-up - i would’ve said the same about rm as well, so it’s not about shipping, guys, it really isn’t - and mikasa needed an inner change; getting married to another man but still praying to eren’s shrine is not substitute to actual development lol). post-time skip she's never really frustrated/angry with him, they never get a confrontation about him becoming a, y'know, mass-murderer of gigantic (pun intended) proportions; she puts him on a pedestal, and never stops idealizing him/never sees him for what he actually is (the narrative framing him as some kind of tragic martyr/saint eren from paradis with zero agency and basically... no clear motivation for the abovementioned mass murder, and not the actual complex tragic anti-hero/villain motivated by revenge and righteous fury he deserved to be, does not help). it lacks a good or even decent build-up - it's basically all tell and not show. now, if they'd actually been childhood friends to enemies to lovers/mutually co-dependent... it could have been interesting. sadly, it's not my cup of tea. of course this is just my personal preference, no hard feelings to the shippers.
misc. thoughts: enormous potential. she's been my fav female character since s1 - and ah, i miss s1!mikasa, when she had actually other stuff to do besides mothering eren. i love that she's the strongest warrior (second only to levi, obv), that her skills are never called into questions despite her gender, i love how she stands up for herself and the people she loves, that she may seem cold and stoic and yet has a such a huge heart, that she's not perfect but also sometimes awe-inspiring. sadly, she never really gets out of eren's shadow; what she lacks is an arc focused on herself. that's why imo getting deeper into the ackerman lore would've helped (also, you cannot make the main female character and the most popular male character descend from the same Unique Bloodline or whatever, and never really make them acknowledge it out loud; as a writer, you just can't lol). my spite is so strong that i'm currently writing a ridiculously pretentious fic that's 70% development for her character, to give her a voice, and 30% ackerthirsting. (yes, that's the fic i'm always vagueblogging about lmao, rip @ my brain). if any other rivamika fan is interested… mind you, it’s in italian tho, and idt i have the skills to translate into english.
misa:
general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life
hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would bang
hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff
daemon: mmh, maybe some kind of butterfly? beautiful, colorful, and short-lived.
best quality: glorious fashion sense, more inventive and ingenious than fans actually give her credit for.
worst quality: shallow, impulsive, and obv her dependence on/obsession with light (which stems from trauma btw, but still… the very opposite of a relationship between equals).
ship them with: rem, kinda (monster/human ftw!). also weirdly enough mogi, a little bit? she deserves someone who actually respects her… though she’s far from being a perfect angel. she may actually be crazier than light on some aspects. but in this house we stan evil ladies anyway, so i have no problem with that <3
brotp them with: uh, idk, maybe matsuda?
needs to stay away from: obv light. also takada.
misc. thoughts: a tragic victim of sexist writing. she may be… unhinged to say the least, but she didn’t deserve the abuse she got from light (and from the fans). the female characters’ writing in dn is so bad that idk if it’s on purpose, to kinda mirror the reality of women in a patriarchal society (dependent on men, housewives whose life entirely revolves around their husband/boyfriend etc.), or just casual misogyny lol. it’s even more baffling since we don’t know the author’s gender (they may be a man, a woman, nb, anything really). i tend for the latter option tho.
aegon greyjoy (now, i wasn’t expecting him lol):
general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life
hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would bang
hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff
i’m so sorry, i haven’t the slightest idea lmao. maybe gryffindor? mind you, it’s been a long time since i’ve re-read the books, so i don’t have many thoughts about him.
daemon: maybe it’s cliché, but some kind of fish/squid lmao
best quality: ugh, i really can’t remember much from his chapters :(( he’s not a coward, i guess? (lame answer, sorry!)
worst quality: definitely his religious fanaticism.
ship them with: no one.
brotp them with: uh… his family, ig? except euron.
needs to stay away from: obv euron. brr ://
misc. thoughts: i genuinely like the greyjoys chapters, though i vastly prefer the martells (with the exception of theon and asha, bcs i love them). yes, they’re deranged. yes, victarion is… well, victarion lol. but the drowned god religion is actually interesting, grrm knows how to write trauma - every time aeron mentions euron and that freaking door i’m like… :// - and the tragedy of it all… just great writing all around.
okay, that’s the end lmao. thank you so much, love!!! ❤❤

Rules: List your five favorite anime characters and tag some people.
Tagged by @pendulum-sonata (thank you dear!.... sorry for this being hella late OTL BIG GOMEN)
So I had like half this post typed up last night weeks ago but my dumbass accidentally deleted it so here goes take 2...
Also I just wanna take this opportunity to gush about my absolute favorite characters so I’m gonna cheat a lil bit by using some video game characters if y’all don’t mind...
Now, without further ado...
1.
Tumblr media
Chrom - Fire Emblem Awakening
So, I love Chrom a lot, I figure y’all know that by now right? Chrom is admittedly, como se dice, not the most complex of characters. He is a simple man, really. Prince of Ylisse who doesn’t know much about life outside of leading his rag-tag Shepherds into skirmishes to protect his kingdom, family, and friends, or breaking a few things here and there (because he’s a total klutz). He doesn’t really know how to dress himself properly, as you can see (no, Idfk what he’s wearing either), and he’s terrible at diplomacy (he said so himself). Yet, despite his hopelessly dorky but somehow handsome appearance, he’s also incredibly stubborn and hard-headed, ignorant sometimes but not naiive, extremely loyal, and sometimes even awkward, but he’s always, always seeking to learn from his mistakes and the world around him. He may struggle against his own impulses, but he’s aware of this fault of his and, despite it, fights fiercely for his comrades and works to be someone reliable for them. He’s the man you want by your side because he won’t allow you to drag yourself through the mud, and if you are dragged, then he’ll drag himself right along with you just to make sure you’ll have someone to lean on when you’re struggling to stand right back up again.
Chrom is so unapologetically himself in any situation, be it formal or informal, and it’s inspiring to me in ways that words fail to describe because just watching him go about his life simply being himself and urging you to do the same reminds you: maybe you don’t have to be perfect, and that’s just perfectly fine. He is a reminder of what unconditional love is supposed to look like and it’s a simple thing but it’s always appreciated.
“Remember that you are yourself before you are any man’s son/daughter,” he says to you. I know that he doesn’t think of himself as being very charismatic but everything he does and says would claim otherwise.

Yuya Sakaki - Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V
He’s also my number 1 and that’s not a mistake.~
I’ve been a fan of YGO since the anime series debuted in the States (DM). Since 2001, I’ve followed each subsequent entry in the anime franchise and, although I’ve loved this franchise overall, I’ve never really been attached to any of the characters from any YGO show enough to go “Omg I love them.”
That was up until Yuya.
Yuya’s personality resonates with me a lot in various ways. For example, I’m not quite sure how obvious this is to people but I LOVE to make others laugh and smile. It’s one of the best feelings in the world. Life of course unfortunately isn’t just that, and, for better or worse, Yuya knows life’s wide range of emotions all too well. The trajectory his development took from day one all the way through episode 148 was one that touched, broke, and mended my heart on a level that I haven’t felt before or since (and one that, to be quite honest, I’m afraid to experience ever again).
I call him my son because he is truly precious to me. His story changed me and my views on life, all for the better. Lastly, his persona is not only one that I love, but also one that I admire; Yuya Sakaki’s kindness and philosophy is goals. I love him eternally.
Bonus: He is just a damn well written character and has one of the best developments I’ve personally witnessed. He’s raised the standard of what I expect a great shounen protagonist to be.
3.
Tumblr media
Lelouch - Code Geass
Look at this asshole.
You don’t know how refreshing it is to view a story from the eyes of a character who is, without a doubt, very morally grey. Like, sure, I’m sure there have been more stories since (and even before) that try this approach but I haven’t ever really found any other characters like him to be quite as compelling. Half the time you really are on his side, and the other half you wish he would just drop dead (not because you hate him, but because you know that’s just the right thing he should do). I know to a lot of people that haven’t seen this show he seems like a basic edge boy, but I assure you he’s quite an idiot. A smart idiot, but still an idiot. With a terrible sense of humor. He very much deals with the consequences of his actions throughout the story and sometimes it’s satisfying (because, yes, he’s a jerk), and other times not so much (because he ultimately does have a heart of gold). He’s just a little tsundere and stubborn and he has very exploitable weaknesses (read: very) so it really does help that he has a flair for the dramatic. Anyway, Lelouch, his wide range of emotions, and his story are extremely entertaining to watch and I love his stupid sassy face.
4.
Tumblr media
Neku Sakuraba - The World Ends With You
I love this kid.
So Neku is another character that looks edgy as hell, admittedly, but I assure you he’s soft. Or at least not entirely at first. Yes, he’s also a jerk, but he has his reasons (teen angst, what can I say) but watching the process of him opening up slowly in real time is just *chefs kiss* amazing and heartwarming and gives you hope for the youth of the world. I’ll admit, I first played this game when I was like 14 or so and going through some of my own teen angst, so I found the jerk side of him to be somewhat relatable back then, but the moral of his story didn’t fly by my head even then. It made me happy and it was something nice to learn at that age. Years later, I’m back here playing this game again and I think the lessons Neku learns throughout his little journey in Shibuya really hit you right in the feels, perhaps even more, idk. He’s really inspiring and, like I said, heartwarming and ultimately brings a smile to my face every time. God. Bless this kid. Please.
He needs it.

Rosalina - Mario Series
Did y’all know I fucking LOVE Rosalina.
She’s not a terribly revolutionary character, but her backstory was so touching to me and I love her character design (f me up she’s fucking gorgeous). My reasons for loving her a pretty simple like that, though on top of it all I relate to her; What with her tendency to adopt cute lil Lumas and giving up everything for them (but also using them to hurt others), Rosalina gets me. She’s also just so cool and calm but she has a fun side to her too. Simple as my reasons are, she’s up there with my favorite characters ever. God I still remember booting up SMG and meeting her for the first time yeah I fucking loved her immediately. Damn. Can’t get me enough Rosalina~
I love her relationships with her precious Luma children so much, I named my car Luma lol
okay, done! Again, thank you for tagging me Rose! Sorry I took forever~ thanks for letting me gush about my faves for a bit, it was very relaxing~
I’m tagging: @dancerladyaqua @pxiao @yutoknight @entermates @skittymon @theabcsofjustice @blueeyeswhitegarden @heliosknight @orasforlife @lilias-amell@moshimichi @timahina @seasaltmemories and @cypsiman2 and anyone else who wants to participate~ you don’t have to if you don’t want to!

answer all the ones you have an interesting answer for, i guess?
i had FAR too much fun with this and it’s horrifically long so. Apologies For That. also thank you friend
2: What’s your dream pet? (Real or not)i really want some finches, when i'm actually in a place to care for an animal? maybe a pigeon3: Do you have a favorite clothing style?in real life i actually Wear button downs and black jeans most of the time for convenience. *ideally* it would be something more like "unholy union of like three different goth aesthetics, and sith fashion, and also Pirate. and spikes/chains/glowy lights." it's probably good for everyone else's eyes that i'm too cheap to redo my entire wardrobe in line with my ideal aesthetic sensibilities. i also have a set color scheme; at most one bright color, which is generally red, blue, or purple, and everything else should be black or grey. 8: What is your Greek personality type? [Sanguine, Phlegmatic, Choleric, or Melancholic]melancholic with choleric leanings.9: Are you ticklish?nope! im pretty sure i trained myself out of it 12: Do you prefer tea, coffee, or cocoa?tea. i like the taste of coffee if it's very heavily creamed and sugared but it does terrible things to my body so i don't drink it. too much chocolate also makes me sick14: Would you rather be a vampire, elf, or merperson?VAMPIRE. practically already am. 16: How tall are you?5'7"-5'8". measurements have varied. 17: If you had to change your name, what would you change it to?starscreamthis one is Already a name change? i've been through a few names and honestly i'm pretty happy with "ren." i thought about changing to something people could actually spell right on the first try, but nothing Felt right? 20: Do you like space or the ocean more?ocean! but both are pretty neat21: Are you religious?yes, but it's not remotely clear what i actually believe, just that it's Something  23: Would you rather be nocturnal or diurnal [opposite of nocturnal]?i'm already practically nocturnal tbh and it's fun 30: Favorite movie?i really appreciate the star wars prequels32: How many pets have you own in your lifetime?nine; six fish and three budgies, not all at the same time37: What is your eye color?green38: Introvert or extrovert?i think the whole dichotomy is a bit overhyped and doesn't exactly apply to me. my situation is more that i act like extroverts are "supposed" to with close friends but people i don't already know and like very much are deeply exhausting to be around and i'd rather not40: Hugs or kisses?depends. hand/forehead/cheek/etc kisses are intensely blessed and important to me, but i don't particularly enjoy making out or whatnot, and hugs are Very nice. 42: Who is someone you love deeply?tumblr user @autisticsansa44: Do you like tattoos and piercings?yeah!45: Do you smoke or have you eiver done so?yeah, occasionally. obligatory disclaimer that it's a terrible habit and you shouldn't start. it's more a "i'm extremely anxious and need to do SOMETHING" thing than a regular habit, though. 57: Have any mental disorders? [Only ask this if you know the user doesn’t mind!]several. it's just not 100% clear which ones. the most recent Professional Opinion was OCD and CPTSD with probably related anxiety and depression. also autism but i don't think that's quite the same thing58: What does your URL mean?it's a pun on "neurodivergent" that i stole from someone else's post about liches61: What makes you unfollow a blog?if your opinions start pissing me off too much or you post things i consider morally objectionable or dangerous to me. also if we have a sufficiently bad personal fight. i don't really care if a mutual or someone i've been following for a long time stops having common interests with me or anything like that, at that point i'm invested in You as a Person and will stick around for that64: Favorite animal(s):all birds. also cetaceans69: What is your star sign?i'm a fake scorpio. i have been telling people i'm a scorpio and tagging zodiac posts accordingly for literal years, out of a combination of the stereotype applying to me much better than the one for my Actual Birthday and residual influence from homestuck. 76: Do you like birds?i LOVE birds.86: Can you run a mile within ten minutes?i can't run a mile at ALL i'll have an asthma atatck88: Can you touch your toes and keep your legs straight completely?no and trying hurts90: If you were an animal, which one would you be?goth cockatoo94: Would you rather be able to fly or read minds?both of those sound fantastic. i want to say fly, though, both because bird thing!!!!, my latest batch of Attachment/Projection Characters has me thinking about the idea a lot, and mind reading seems like it would likely become a burden on me. i struggle enough with other people's feelings about me as it is96: Winter or summer?winter. summer is consistently a miserable time for me101: Favorite type of shoesaesthetically, high heeled black lace up boots. irl i mostly wear combat boots, though103: Are you a vegetarian or vegan? If so, why?vegetarian. i don't really Know why; it was how i was raised, i have no actual desire to eat meat, and i'm reasonably certain trying to start now would interact disastrously with a lot of my preexisting food issues. also, some of you are incapable of not responding to asshole vegans by acting like eating meat is a moral imperative and it's ok to bully people who don't. so even if i did want to, i wouldn't out of sheer spite106: Do you like bugs?depends on the kind. bees/wasps, dragonflies, and butterfly/moth type things are all fine. i'm deathly afraid of crickets107: Do you like spiders?yeah! i think they're cute109: Can you draw:not very well, but i keep doing it anyway114: Do you prefer cloudy or sunny days?cloudy. bright light tends to hurt me115: Someone you’d like to kiss or cuddle right now:i'm in an odd place right now where i'm either not sure if the people i'm closest to (and/or most want to Become close with) would be comfortable with anything of the sort, or know for a fact that they wouldn't be, so i'm going to refrain from naming anyone, but certain friends129: What would you want written on your tombstone?"túrin turambar dagnir glaurunga." for old times' sake/the sentimental value. i doubt christopher tolkien would give anyone permission for that, though131: What is something you love but also hate about yourself?arrogance, ambition, drive to succeed out of sheer Spite. it's a very good aesthetic, but i don't imagine it's very pleasant to actually *interact* with someone with a complex about being #1 132: Do you smile with your teeth showing for pictures?nope. i exclusively either smirk or keep my face as blank as possible; i don't think smiling like that looks good on me. 133: Computer or TV?computer. i don't actually know how to operate a television139: What nicknames do you have/have had?a lot. tends to come with changing your name 500 times. atm i don't really have any, to my slight disappointment140: Did you have any pretend or imaginary friends?i had imaginary enemies as a kid143: Do you prefer giving or receiving gifts/help?depends? it's hard for me to help people, especially to guess what kind of thing actually Is helpful to them, and i absolutely LOVE being given things, but also if i know someone well enough that we're giving each other things i would feel absolutely terrible not reciprocating, and doing it makes me happy. 145: How many languages do you speak fluently?only english, unfortunately. i have like a six year olds level of russian, which i want to improve, and i think i Could get there with japanese eventually if i start taking classes again147: Are you androgynous?honestly i can't really tell? not deliberately so, particularly, but i think i have a very Traditionally Feminine kind of pretty face and the way that combines with mostly masculine presentation and facial hair is pretty androgynous148: Favorite physical thing about yourself:this isn't a Specific Thing per se, but i do think HRT has been taking my appearance in a very "g1 seeker" direction and i am DELIGHTED151: If you could go back into time and live in one era, which would you choose?hm. viking stuff is a Big Aesthetic, but also i think i deserve to be a sickly victorian gentleman and die of tuberculosis154: Do you like to kiss others’ foreheads or hands for platonic reasons?YES. this is one of my favorite forms of affection irl. also hand kissing is The Most Valid kind of kissing. 155: Do you like to play with others’ hair?yes!!!157: Something that makes you nervous/anxious:talking to people when i'm not 100% sure where i stand with them or how much they like me. especially if i'm requesting anything.168: Do you like to wear makeup?i used to. i probably still would if i could do it without being read as a woman, but as it is the discomfort of being misgendered outweighs the joy of Having Sparkly Colors on My Face

Ranpo, Kunikida, and Dazai for the ask meme?
Give Me A Character; And I’ll break their ass down:
Sorry in advance for the long response!
Ranpo:
How do I feel about this character:One of the more interesting characters of the series as he has no ability despite the series focusing almost solely on ability users. A good boy that made me emotional while reading his light novel (okay, I also cried at the Oda scene like the Oda fangirl I am but that’s besides the point). A small boy that I wanna protect.
All the people I ship romantic with this character:Poe: I just,, love how pure Ranpoe is. They are soft boys together. Also, I feel into Ranzai hell because I hate getting new content of the ships I like. Okay, but Dazai and Ranpo have the personalities and capability of having great chemistry together and I just,, I love them smart boys together,
My non-romantic OTP for this character:Yosano: They just have nights where they hang out talking shit about everyone else while also talking about their love life.Fukuzawa: Give me the father/son content that I need! Also: In AU’s where Oda survived, them being good friends, it A+ stuff
My unpopular opinion about this character:He’s not the gremlin man-child the fandom makes him out to be.
One thing i wish would happen/ had happened with this character in canon:More of the interactions Ranpo had with Fukuzawa and the ADA members between light novel 3 and the current story.
Let me put the rest under a read more cause I wrote so much!!
Kunikida:
How do I feel about this character:Uhh, besides the fact that he is one of two characters I’ll cry about for an hour about in this series? Okay, let me be serious here. Kunikida is the best written and developed character in the series besides Oda. He is such a good boy. The fact that he holds onto his ideals and the way of life he set out for himself even when these are constantly tested and pushed over and over again is just so awe-inspiring. Such a noble man and a person of virtue. He so selfless and he just wants to protect everyone he can. And the moment that he fails for whatever reason, the lose hits him hard. And even when he loses someone, he puts his heart out for people again and again. He just wants, no needs, to help people, the consequences to himself be damned. I just,,,, really love Kunikida and I can and will cry about him. Also, he’s a sharped dressed glasses boy with long hair, I was in love with his design before I even fell in love with his character
All the people I ship romantic with this character:Dazai: Since the very first episode of the anime. These two truly understand each other better then anyone else at the agency. Also, they care about each other so much!!! They have their fights sure, but they’re never malicious in nature. Please, just read light novel 1! It’s the good Kunikidazai content, and it shows just how quickly they get to understand and know each other.Katai: Ever since chapter.41 got translated, I fall in love with them. First off, childhood friends guys, the good stuff. But, they truly are such good friends that care about each other so much and would go to any length for each other!Oda: In AU’s where Oda lives. I think the two of them would get along so well, They’re similar in many ways, yet they have enough little differences in their view points and life experiences that they wouldn’t become stale togetherAngo: Glasses boys that deal with DazaiAlso, lowkey ship with Chuuya and Ranpo
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Anyone under 18 in the series are now his kids, no ifs or buts. He’s every child’s parent now. A family can be a 22 year old man and his many kidsFukuzawa: Father/son bonding over training together
My unpopular opinion about this character: Stop making Kunikida heartless and cold 2K17!!!
One thing i wish would happen/ had happened with this character in canon:“Slides Asagiri $20* Please, I beg you. Give me the forbidden Kunikida backstory on how he became the driven man he is nowKunikidazai team up in the manga, please! Also, Kunikatai going to school togetherWhat do you mean I was only supposed to list 1 thing??
Dazai:
How do I feel about this character: I hate this guy *starts sweating* Okay, I love Dazai a lot! But! I’m not gonna be a Dazai apologist, the boy has done MANY things wrong, Yet, I find myself so invested in him, even though he’s one of the biggest asshole in the entire series. Characters with grey morality and complex issues that aren’t explored to their full potential in canon are some of my favorite character types, and Dazai is like my top choice for both of these. Also, he’s so much fun to dissect and break down into meta writing and just trying to understand his thinking is fascinating to me.Also, the man is really fucking pretty. 10/10, no matter what he’s wearing or what era it is
All the people I ship romantic with this character: Kunikida: As I said before, I’m a HUGE Kunikidazai shipper. I love how Dazai actually respects Kunikida and the man’s dreams and ideals. Dazai himself may be a pragmatist, but he loves the fact that Kunikida can still be this idealistic person even when the world kicks him down over and over. They just,,, have a wonderful relationship built of mutual trust and respect for each otherRanpo: These two are the closest in intelligence out of the ADA and both of them have a talent of being able to read people. I think they would have an interesting dynamic together.Fyodor: Purely for the aesthetic and dynamic that a relationship could bring. It wouldn’t be a 100% healthy relationship, but,,, blame the Callme RP circle and my love for ships where both people are so similar in some ways that it’s terrifying for this.Chuuya: Lowkey, but let it be known. The only reason that I started to really like them together was because someone brought up a Yokai & hunter AU and they said they didn’t know anything about yokai lore so they couldn’t talk about it and my yokai loving ass went: Hey!!!! I can write that!!!
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Oda: Their platonic relationship is super important to me. I just,,, really love itFukuzawa: Give me Fukuzawa being a good boss to Dazai and trying to be a positive role of authority in Dazai’s life after he worked with Mori the cuck.Yosano: Give me these two being drinking buddies and going to bars and having competitions with each other over who can have the most people respond positively towards their flirting.Hirotsu: Mafia granddad who still cares about Dazai after he left the mafia, I just really love it
My unpopular opinion about this character: We gotta stop with the thing that people do where they say that Dazai’s past actions are okay because he’s gotten better. Cause that ain’t how redemption works. Also, he isn’t the best written character in the series currently. Even though I can see how he easily could be written better.
One thing i wish would happen/ had happened with this character in canon: Let! Him! Fail! He needs to fall down a peg and he neds to know that he can be wrong! I’m kinda tired of the “It was all part of my keikaku all along!” bullshit(Translator note: Keikaku means plan)Also, can we have more time dictated to show how these problems that Dazai clearly has affects his day-to-day life? Like, show us that sometimes he’s too depressed to even get out of bed for work in the morning.

AOS Character Analysis
Okay, i haven’t seen any character analysis really for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
This is kinda more to my own benefit, if anyone disagrees, go ahead and tell me, i’m interested.
and because I have the time, here is my concept of the characters (This is without seeing the last two episodes of season 4 before the mid-season finale, thanks to stupid Aussie TV networks not showing it)
1: Agent Coulson
Right off the bat, Coulson has a high moral compass, willing to do what is right for the people and for his team. He doesn’t trust easily and has his doubts with nearly everyone he comes in to contact with. He isn’t opposed to killing as long as it fulfils something. Killing people like Garret and Ward for several reasons.
While Coulson’s loyalty has been tested in the briefest of times, he’s really just the guy who’s mind says ‘Stick to the system, unless the system is wrong, then you make your own system’
2: Melinda May
It makes sense that the shows quietest character is the one of the most complex. From day 1, she’s been unwilling to carry or do anything lethal unless she absolutely has to. She was haunted by her time in Bahrain and doesn’t want to make the same mistakes. For the quietest character, emotion doesn’t come easily to her, but when she feels something, she really feels something and it takes over.
she’s lethal and efficient and really always judging anyone around her while also being severely underestimated.
3: Leo Fitz (Beware, his is long)
speaking of complex characters. No denying that Fitz has been portrayed really well as someone real by Iain, who is perhaps the best actor on the show. Like Coulson, Fitz has a strong moral compass and is also not opposed to killing, but like May, only when deemed necessary. Out of all the characters, Fitz has changed the most (even against Daisy, who is practically the same, but I’ll get to that). In season 1, we see Fitz as a shy, awkward nerd who really only has eyes for Simmons (Which didn’t change at all). He doesn’t want to get his hands dirty, doesn’t want to pick up a gun and shoot someone, hence the ICERS (Or at this point, Night-Night guns) being developed.
The first time we do see him kill is when he shoots the HYDRA agent, an action that saved May. There was practically no time for him to feel remorse, besides the reaction we got from him during the event, with all the HYDRA business. During season 2, after his brain damage, his demeanour changes and we see an angsty Fitz who really misses Simmons. We see him putting so much on the line in order to help Skye and stop people from judging her and being afraid of her. We also see his close friendship with Mack develop. What interested me though was Fitz’s statement in Episode 3 ‘I’m not a killer’ and how that comes into play later. That statement was said right after he nearly killed Ward, after torturing him (In a way). We see his reaction to Gordon teleporting onto Fitz’s pole, something he no doubt felt responsible for.
While Fitz core principals stayed the same through season 2, we see a lot change in season 3. After losing Simmons (”losing”), we see him throwing everything he has to try and get her back, because if he couldn’t, he had nothing left to lose. Simmons is his rock, someone that keeps him grounded and sane. He puts so much on the line to save Simmons, becoming reckless and in a way, more confident as the season progresses. What really came as a shock, and something that was slightly out of character, was Fitz’s killing of Giyera.
As I said before, his statement in season 2 comes into play here. We see Fitz debate constantly with himself and his moral compass get tested. Fitz is hardly not the first Marvel Character to have what is called ‘moral ambiguity’. Daredevil could even be in this category.
Season 4 for Fitz is slightly different. He's back to being similar to season 1, he’s in a committed relationship with Simmons and all is good. In season 4, Fitz is doing what he does best, Science, and is more involved in both sides of S.H.I.E.L.D. rather than being more involved in the field agent side as it seemed he was in season 3.
Throughout all the seasons, Fitz went from shy engineer with his heart on his sleeve, to semi-confident field engineer with a lot of bottled up emotions. Pardon the long section, Fitz’s character is so complex that he needed a season by season breakdown (Not to mention being my favourite character)
4: Jemma Simmons
Simmons is an obvious INTJ in MBTI types. As an INTJ female myself, i understand her character in a way few overlook. she is less emotionally driven then Fitz, going through everything rationally and applying logic to everything she does. Simmons moral compass is skewed in a way, she wants to do the right thing but is one of those people that has the code of ‘the needs of many outweigh the needs of the few’.
We see her consumed by her revenge against Ward, however brief. Bakshi died because she was careless in a way that seemed out of character for her, but really, it wasn’t. One of the traits of INTJs is that they do have emotion, incredibly strong emotion, but are able to compartmentalise them to a point where they seem cold. Simmons loves Fitz, in more ways than one. At the point of Bakshi’s death, he was her best friend. She hated what Ward did to Fitz that she felt the need to find closure in the only way she thought how, killing Ward.
5: Daisy ‘Skye’ Johnson
Daisy’s character is simple. She’s the character the show tends to revolve around and so we see a lot of her character. In season 1, Daisy was carefree and cocky. Her intelligence didn’t go unnoticed, she didn’t want it to. Season 2, we see the start of her struggles with herself. In light of learning that her parents were alive and of her inhumanity, she begins to retreat back into herself, forming a wall around her that only few could get through.
Her friendship with Fitz seemed to get stronger during season 2, as he was the only one that didn’t push her away. Her relationship with Coulson is like a father and daughter, with Coulson seeing her as someone he could ‘raise’ in a way, to teach what was right and wrong and to see become a great person.
In season 3, we see the start of Daisy’s hate for prejudice against Inhumans, as she had begun to accept herself properly. We see her and Lincoln become something strong and great as she’s learning to trust again after Ward and after her mother. We also see Daisy’s vulnerability, her emotions running everything.
In season 4, Daisy’s broken and her character is something new. She feels responsible for everyone’s pain and Lincoln’s death. She’s willing to die to stop herself from feeling the pain and seemed to find herself situations in which she might not come back from.
6: Lance Hunter
I miss Hunter. Just saying.
Hunter was a jack of all trades, a comedian in his own right. his character was arrogant, sarcastic and was overall, a loveable asshole. His moral compass is perhaps the most grey out of all the S.H.I.E.L.D. characters due to his professional career as a merc.
7: Bobbi Morse
A truely strong female character. Bobbi’s manipulative, great a poker faces and a fighter capable of similar feats to May. She’s good at using other’s weaknesses to her advantage and how to play her cards right.
8: Mack
Mack is truely done with everything by season 4, if his continuous use of the shotgun/axe or reference to it is any indication. We know he’s done with everyone’s shit when we hear a reference to his special weapon.
All joking aside, Mack’s great a helping people, like he did Fitz. He knows enough techno-babble to become great friends with Fitz and Simmons while also being a capable fighter and leader to bond with Coulson and Daisy. He’s an allrounder, being able to do a bit of everything and it’s shown time and time again that without May or Daisy there, Mack’s the one that Coulson trusts the most to get other through.
9: Trip
Poor Trip...
Trip was quite a character. He was confident, witty and clever. He drew both Simmons and Daisy’s attention in similar ways. He was smart and took pride in the fact that his grandfather worked with Cap.
10: Grant Ward
The biggest asshole on the show!
Ward was a complex villain. In season 1, he prided himself on being a really caring agent hiding behind a wall of emotions. While that was all part of his cover, there was some truth to it.
When he was captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. Ward tried to play to the teams weaknesses, trying to make himself seem genuine and willing to help. He seemed to believe his own lies and make me think that he had some sort of mental or personality disorder. One thing that interested me was the fact that he really did care for Kara.
In season 3, before he was killed, the only thing that seemed important to him was becoming the boss of a newly reformed HYDRA, with him as the head. It was interesting that he seemed to keep some habits from S.H.I.E.L.D., such as being called ‘director’ and the level system.
all and all, Ward was one cold bastard with a, albeit small, sentimental side.
Well now that’s done, if anyone has any thoughts on what I said, please do tell me, i’d really like to know what others have to say.
