I was exited for Vol 9 but i so afraid at how they would handle Ruby like will she actually get to vent without having her words used against ger for once???

And the answer was a big no and YET

They made it clear that whatever happens its something they cant gloss over anymore

Throught that whole scene for me theres was just this feeling of vindication

FINALLY we're seeing the result of the oh so inspiring "if youre not performing at your absolute best then..." she got from Ozpin

i only got into rwby like… a bit less than a year and a half ago, went into it mostly blind (<- i knew the fandom was SUPER ship heavy, a very basic summary of who cinder was, and “this is salem, you would love her” lmao) and got as far as 1.4 before i was like

—except at that point i was being facetious bc rwby really does a fantastic job of initially masquerading as your bog standard ‘plucky kids save the world’ fantasy story at first (<- & stories like that are fun! i just tend to read them with tongue in cheek bc they do make me very conscious of my own suspension of disbelief). i remember hitting 1.10 for the first time and going 😬 and then feeling increasingly like, ‘…hold up.’ through V2-3 and by the time i reached V4 i was like. okay this is a deconstruction let’s GO! but figured the salem side of things would continue to be played straight (bc it always is) until lost fable cold-clocked me. and then i became Deranged.

so during the gap in between finishing V8 and V9 starting, there… honestly there wasn’t a single doubt in my mind that ruby would be having, not just an emotional breakdown but a wholesale crisis of identity and reckoning with the huntsman system itself. bc i think watching the whole show V1-8 in one go, while having very little in the way of preconceived notions about what the story would be, really made the incremental progression towards what’s going on in V9 a lot more visible. (<- i also rewatched it like four times in that time and kept noticing *more* of how well everything fits together. genuinely this is a really well-constructed story. so i have a lot of trust in the, like, intentionality of the narrative, that it’s going to follow through.)

but it’s been just. so so thrilling to SEE it actually, really happen. the narrative crescendo. ruby finally detonating her pedestal bc she can’t take it anymore and she’s a human fucking being. GOD. it’s so good.

also as far as neo goes, yeah i’d agree. for as different as they are they do have a lot of emotional similarity—ruby cornered on the huntress pedestal, neo both literally and figuratively silenced and abused bc she wasn’t the perfect daughter her parents wanted, there’s a very symmetrical experience here of cracking under the strain of a dehumanizing ideal. and i don’t think ruby cares about neo enough to have this bloody rampage of revenge against her that most of the fandom seems to be anticipating. the personal animosity isn’t reciprocal. as far as ruby is concerned neo is just a jerk whom her real enemies (cinder, salem) used as a pawn.

+ i think a bloody rampage at this point in the would be extremely tonally and thematically dissonant. when has this story ever reveled in violence? and ruby is at a point rn where she’s having severe trauma responses and shutting down every time there’s a fight. (she grabs for her weapon when the jabberwalker shows up, but then freezes—& in 9.7 it’s shown that she’s freezing bc she’s having panic attacks. like we see what was happening in her head in 9.1 & 9.5 while she watched wby engage the jabberwalker.)

like rwby has never been about stomping the bad guys into the curb. it’s a story about healing and compassion and escape from systems that enforce and necessitate violence. rip to all the bloodthirsty fans but that’s just not what the show is about.

This glitch was fixed in Super Mario All-Stars. This can be achieved in Worlds 1-3 and 2-4 with a Boomerang Brother, or 5-7 with a Lakitu. i’m fixating on the comment about ozpin being dissociated for all of v1 and asking you to elaborate on your thoughts on him in those early volumes if you would so please

right so aside from ozpin wandering into a police interrogation room with milk and cookies to establish him as the eccentric mentor archetype the first thing that happens with ozpin in the story, once we have him in context as the headmaster of beacon academy, is he welcomes the new crop of students to the academy with a very perfunctory and, uh, uninspiring speech:

OZPIN: I’ll… keep this brief. You have traveled here today in search of knowledge, to hone your craft and acquire new skills, and when you have finished you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people. But I look amongst you, and all I see is wasted energy in need of purpose… direction. You assume knowledge will free you of this, but your time at this school will prove that knowledge can only carry you so far. It is up to you to take the first step.

after which yang and ruby specifically remark that he seemed “kind of off” and like he “wasn’t even there,” which flags for the audience that ozpin isn’t just like that, that he is, at minimum, so thoroughly checked out of his notional job as the headmaster that it’s immediately obvious even to kids who only know him as an occasional face on the news. 1.4 and 1.7 hammer that home with his general demeanor during the initiation—the near-monotone delivery of the rules, “are there any questions?” and then flatly ignoring jaune’s attempt to ask a question, tuning out/not really responding to anything glynda says to him (coupled with her tangible concern, which again signals that he’s acting strange). then in 1.8 we get the vague trailing off of “it looks like things are shaping up to be an… interesting year…”; his sole appearance in 1.9 makes something of a point of him not paying attention to what’s happening around him (he glances down into his tea—sidebar the man pours this stuff from a teapot i refuse to accept that it’s hot cocoa let me have this—as JNPR run by and this is juxtaposed against glynda reacting to the kids rushing; taken in isolation this would read more as “well that’s not my business” but in context with what has already been established it reads more like “still checked out”).

the first… real glimpse we get of the ozpin we met in 1.1 comes in 1.10, when he engages with ruby’s insecurity—and THIS moment is always interesting to me because you can *hear* him starting to slide away again (he’s animated and speaking in his typical cadence at first and then just goes flat on “i’ve made more mistakes than any man, woman, or child on this planet,” before rallying again). which is neat because it drops a hint about why ozpin has been acting like this; he has to make an effort to stay present after referencing his past mistakes. it’s further interesting that by this point in the narrative, 1. the only two scenes where ozpin is present are one-on-one conversations with ruby, and 2. when he zones out and ignores glynda in 1.7 he’s staring at a video feed of ruby, specifically—this implicitly links ruby to the things that keep pulling him into his head (and of course it later becomes clear that ozpin is weighing ruby’s potential as one of his “guardians” in the ongoing conflict with salem).

that’s the last we see of ozpin until the end of 1.16, when he receives the “queen has pawns” message from qrow. there are some loose similarities with 1.7 here in that ozpin is focused on watching ruby via security footage when a subordinate tries to get his attention—but this time ozpin reacts quite differently, immediately shutting off the feed to view the message and then reacting to it (he lifts his head and his eyebrows in surprise and then sort of sinks back down into a thoughtful stare).

then (chronologically) the next thing that happens is he questions blake, which we see in 2.2, and his demeanor in this scene is very different from both the vague checked out behavior we see for most of v1 and the kindly eccentric he appears to be in 1.1 and 1.10 when he speaks to ruby; he’s animated and fully engaged and also focused, not merely participating in a brief conversation (as he did with ruby in 1.1 & 10) but actively driving it for a specific purpose. the questioning scene is important for several reasons—it’s the first time we get to see ozpin’s unpleasant side rise to the surface, for one!—but for the purposes of this particular discussion it’s mainly interesting because it establishes that the change in ozpin’s demeanor between v1 and v2 coincided exactly with that “queen has pawns” text, so when v2 opens with ozpin paying attention to even trivial events happening in front of him (the food fight + glynda’s ire) and then engaging much more normally with glynda and ironwood in the second episode we have a specific incident that caused that shift.

(and of course this is something that becomes much clearer in hindsight once we have context for what ozpin was so consumed by in v1 and what sort of danger snapped him out of it in v2-3; but even on a first watch his sudden attentiveness in v2 really struck me, partly bc the narrative makes such a point of emphasizing how inattentive he is in v1.)

so yeah my read on ozpin in v1 is he’s dissociating and just going through the motions by rote for… most of it, until qrow sends him that warning and the combination of 1. having something to occupy his thoughts that isn’t his many, many regrets and 2. facing an immediate and tangible threat grounds him

#this shift is also accompanied by a dramatic change in eye color which PROBABLY MEANS NOTHING A LOT OF MODELS WERE TIDIED UP AFTER V1 but #…his eyes also repeatedly switch colors in the lost fable…#so…???

leah! i have a friend who has never seen svu but i have gotten them super into EO. the prospect of 22 seasons is a bit much so do you have a EO watchlist by any chance? 👀

first up, hulu has a best of bensler playlist (or they did last i checked) that would be a quick and easy intro to just eo. it is definitely shorter than the list i am about to give you and so is probably a good place to start if they literally only want the big eo highlights.

but.
