Synopsis: When Do-Jin (Jang Ki-Yong) and Jae-Yi (Jin Ki-Joo) were high school students, they were each other's first love. Do-Jin's father Hee-Jae (Heo Jun-Ho) was a psychopath and killed Jae-Yi's parents. Do-Jin and Jae-Yi were separated afterwards. Now, Do-Jin works as a detective. He treats the victim's family with care. This is his way of atoning for his father's horrific act. Meanwhile, Jae-Yi works as an actress. Hello people,

It is I, your neighbourhood critique. I know it's hard to believe but I am alive. I haven't had a chance to write reviews here in the past few years as my degree and life took a lot of time but I want to go back to writing reviews now. Sooooooooooooo what better way to do that than to talk about Come and Hug Me!

This 2018 Korean drama really took me by the collar and said "Bih, you thought". I had seen ads about it last year when it was airing but I wasn't fully aware of the plot so I never watched it. The poster and the promos honestly make this show look like your avarage romance drama with some external conflict between the couple blah blah blah BUT BOI WAS I WRONG

Let me educate you with what I have learned. You're very welcome.

Come and Hug Me is about Yoon Na Moo and his life as the son of a serial killer who killed his high school sweeetheart's parents, among 10+ people ofc. The main conflict throughout the show is Na Moo and his relationship with his father, the guilt he feels for what his father has done and how he can atone for his sins. The timeline takes us from when Na Moo was in high school to when he becomes a detective. His guilt-ridden life is also heavily influenced by the fact that his father killed Gil Nak Won's, the person he loves, parents. Na Moo finds his father with Nak Won and her parents at their house and this incident unravels his as the serial killer and gets him caught. As you can expect, this breaks the lovers apart and they don't see each other for years after that until Gil Nak Won is sent a hammer covered in blood in a box one day, just like the weapon used to kill her parents.

While this show satisfies every fangirls dreams about handsome dudes and romantic scenese, it also does a remarkable job at addressing nurture and negligence in a person's development and how someone can live after sustaining a great emotional trauma. Na Moo is an incredibly inroverted and closed person who cannot smile because he feels guilty but also cannot cry because he feels shameful. The inner dilemma and the despair to atone for his father's sins pushes him to become a polce officer in order to protect others. His choice of becoming a oublic servant like that is quite heartbreaking to watch as he decides to serve the people at the cost of his life, and often body.

This drama did everything right in terms of what I would expect a script dealing with such a controversial subject: Is wickedness by nature or develops by nurture? Does a murderer's child deserve to be punished? What does it mean to be 'family'?

Like any good high school debate I've ever watched, this show made the point of involving different perspectives on these questions and did not stick to a Yes/No dichotomy which made the plot quite dynamic and worth getting invested in.

Jang Ki Yong's portrayal of Yoon Na Moo was stiff and unclear at times. I don't know if that is because he was playing an emotionally constipated character or because he needs to tone his skills a bit more, but it did not necessarily take away from my enjoying of the drama. Nonetheless, I am very excited to see him in Kill It this year! Definitely a rising star.

If you decide to watch this drama, let me know what you think about it! The < two 30 min episodes a day > set up really grinds my gears but I made it through for Come and Hug Me. That says a lot, honestly.

Overall, I am giving Come and Hug Me seven and a half trees out of ten.
