Concept: Jack Kline was turned into an Ostium

And looking at how the Ostium was used in the season finale further underscores what will be needed in the future for the story to move forward, and for Jack and his family to heal.

Let's go through it:

LATA: Our box has a name. They call it the Ostium.

CARLOS: Oh. Latin for "an opening in the body." What, didn't any of you guys ever go to Sunday School? ...So is that thing organic? Is it a mouth or... [chuckles] any other kind of hole?

LATA: Let's just stick with a mouth, please.

ADA: So this box eats monsters?

ADAM: It's one of my ribs, dude. Everything can contain the spark of the divine, but this puppy? It's packing enough punch to create life. Or, in your case, destroy God.

SERAFINA: Jack, making your vessel strong, reclaiming your human soul, it was... it was all preparing you for this.

JACK: What'll it do to me?

ADAM: Start an elemental chain reaction. It fuses your soul and your grace into a... Like a...

SERAFINA: Metaphysical supernova.

DEAN: Meaning what?

ADAM: You'll collapse into a living black hole for divine energy. One nothing can escape—not the darkness, not God himself. But once it starts... you can't stop it. So, don't use 'til game time. You dig?

Dean: All that prep work we did to turn Jack here into a cosmic bomb? Oh. Well, it turned him into sort of a power vacuum. He's been sucking up bits of power all over the place.

–SPN 15x19, "Inherit the Earth"

"A living black hole for divine energy" / "a power vacuum" is akin to how the Ostium functions. (And remember that Chuck orchestrated this outcome.)

The final step of Jack's transformation in 15x17 and the way the Ostium is activated are also similar:

Adam's rib, containing extra "spark of the divine," was placed in Jack's palm and he absorbed its power. After his initial explosion outward, Jack was then turned into a vessel that acted as a vacuum for divine power.

When an item was placed on the Ostium–like a rock from the Akrida's world–it absorbed the item, which determines what powerful beings the box "eats" and where it sends those beings when activated.

Both Jack and the Ostium were also wielded as weapons.

Which, of course, this show condemns explicitly:

LATA: So you had a friend stuck in a cycle of violence, and instead of helping him, you wielded him like some kind of weapon?

And, with Joan / the Akrida Queen, we saw what happened to a hunter who absorbed monster essence: she became corrupted.

JOAN: What I decided was that the monsters weren't the problem, kid. Mankind is the problem. They always need saving. And Hunters are the ones who end up paying the price with our lives. And then what do these rescued humans do with their precious second chance at life? They waste it… kill each other, beat each other down, destroy our planet. Monsters have it right. Humans are nothing more than food.

LATA: Is that you talking? Or is it the monster essence that's powering you?

MARY: The monster essence drove her mad. She became so obsessed with making sure that Hunters were protected, and she believed the only way to do that was to wipe out everyone who needed saving.

(Joan is also a dark mirror for Dean, but that's a separate meta topic entirely.)

With how Jack is acting in 15x19 and the SPNWIN finale (and as part of Chuck Won as a concept), something seems to be wrong with him along those lines.

So in regards to the Ostium, what was the solution the team used in the season finale? What did they need to defeat the Akrida Queen?

ADA: The Queen is about to sing her swan song. We can't rewind this tape here.

CARLOS: Wait. What if we could rewind the tape? Metaphysically speaking, if you know what I mean.

–SPNWIN 1x13, "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye"

CARLOS: Well, whatever you feed it creates a portal connected to that object. So we fed it the rock, and it was able to shoot the Akrida back to their world.

MILLIE: So, if we feed it the journal and trace the sigils in reverse, the Ostium can bring here whatever was tied to the journal... the Mystery Man, if he's even alive.

–SPNWIN 1x13, "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye"

They reversed the polarity of the Ostium to try to summon Dean, which required using the journal–something “personal” and “clearly connected” to him, as Mary said at one point.

Now, of course, the result when they used it on the Ostium was that it gave the team the Impala rather than Dean for plot reasons. However, the point holds: Dean's journal was the key to metaphysically rewinding the tape and getting the Ostium to release / return what it had absorbed.

That journal was filled with Dean's thoughts, which we got throughout the show in the form of the story he's telling / narrating. They're the healing lessons repeatedly demonstrated by the 1972 gang that Dean has to use in his own life to free himself from the trap he's in, break the cycle of violence, and get his own happy ending.

So, follow the through-line:

The Ostium and Jack are seemingly similar. Just like Dean's journal was used to reverse the Ostium and get it to release/return what it absorbed... The lessons inside of Dean's journal are what’s needed to reverse the polarity of Jack’s transformation, getting Jack to release the God power he absorbed too.

And what are those lessons in Dean's journal? Ah, well, that's what The Winchesters (the story Dean is telling) is dedicated to showing and telling us. That's the function of the entire show.

To highlight a few mirroring moments relevant to the topic at hand:

TONY: You're scared of your own son?

ADA: I'm not scared of you. I... you are my son, and I love you.

TONY: If you love me, you would've told me the truth.

[...]

ADA: I... was wrong to lie to you about who you are, and I was even more wrong for not believing in you. I know you're not your father. You're not the worst parts of him. You're not the worst parts of me. You're just... you're my... You're Tony.

TRACY: I didn't know how to help you. I was scared.

MAC: I was scared too. I needed my family by my side.

Mutual honesty, apologies, and forgiveness between Dean and Jack are the vital place where they must start. After all... Jack went through with his transformation and later with the corrupting absorption of God power simply because he was desperately trying to earn Dean's forgiveness, something that was repeatedly emphasized throughout season 15. The cycle remained intact instead of broken, and that's why they lost.

So saying that they need to reverse the polarity... What does that mean? It means that their family needs to have emotional release for there to then be the cosmic release of God power, so that that power can be put back out into the universe and no longer have personhood.

Only then will they break the cycle of violence and be able to be free of Chuck's influence once and for all.

You don't need Jack and Ostium parallels to understand and know this about the story. But I do think it's neat, further enhances the overall themes, and once again supports the fact that a Chuck won plot / what happened to Jack was deliberately being centralized! :)

Personal Highlights of the Episode

Fatin’s reaction when Leah goes on her tangent in the Morning America reenactment. It screamed, “girl, we talked about this. Stfu” lol

The girls high af is the funniest thing

All of Shelby’s scenes. They’re brutal, vulnerable, intense. Mia’s acting was great, the storyline was great. The buildup to Shelby’s mental/emotional break was gradual all season and really made it seem authentic and real… probably my favorite episode of season one.

Leah confiding in Fatin. These girls have bonded so much from start to finish. Short of Martha/Toni and Rachel/Nora, all these girls came to the island with little to no history and now they can be vulnerable, show their dark side and not worry about the ramifications of doing so.

Leah’s mental break (again) and that Leatin moment.

Lychee tree. Need I say more.

Things I Didn't Catch the First Time

Shelby reciting the prayer that her father says when he holds the meeting to ‘help’ Kyle with his sins.

“God made you this way, and God only does beautiful.” Yet, the fact she’s gay when God made her that way is a sin. Dave, you’re talking in circles my man.

The cross necklaces Shelby wears in her flashbacks aren’t the same as the one she wears now. Also, Shelby doesn’t have her cross necklace on in the interviews, but she still has her earring in, so the agents couldn’t have confiscated their jewelry, or they would have taken that too, right? This may be a sign to where Shelby’s headspace is regarding her religion at that point in time.

Do you think Nora knew Gretchen would have intervened with the pilot, or do you think she was genuinely excited about being rescued at this point?

Shelby drank like half of the liquor that was in the bottle after Dot handed it over to her. I would've been done in after like 3 sips.

“Uh oh, shark week for Rachel.” – oh, you have no idea Fatin.

Shelby with all them posters of girls on her wall. Uh huh, that lines up.

When Shelby takes her teeth out in front of the agents, the break in the plastic is quite evident. I wonder if that means anything or it’s just representing that she was the one unsettled in her skin and now she’s more comfortable with herself (otherwise she would have hidden her fake teeth like she did with the girls at first)

Doctor Ted… despicable. It’s always the ones you least expect too.

As someone with absolutely zero rhythm, watching people dance is always fascinating to me

The fact that it took nine episodes until someone decided to sharpen a branch into a weapon. Nine episodes and twenty-two days.

Toni is a teddy bear when she’s crushing. She’s like a sour patch kid – sour, then sweet.

Rachel only diving in the water when it was about someone else and not her. It really shows what kind of character she has deep down. Rough exterior at times, but genuinely cares for her people.

It’s to be assumed that Martha gave up dancing, correct? Just another reason to hate that mf’ing ‘doctor’.

I actually kind of like Agent Young. I hope he’s not actually a piece of shit. I feel like he and Alex (Susan too, perhaps) may be the only redeemable people on Gretchen’s team going forward.

Is the goat a parallel to Martha losing her innocence/abandoning her ‘fantasy’ world? Or am I just missing something bigger here?

Field Notes

Field Note #092 – For those playing along, this is the second time we’ve seen Fatin use a random object as a fake “microphone.” First her toothbrush, now Martha’s hairbrush. It’s something she’s done since she was little; in her living room wall there’s a photo of her at four years old, hosting a fashion show using a red-white-and-blue Bomb Pop as a microphone.

Field Note #093 – The surviving girls have all been issued comfortable clothing for their quarantined recovery. Something interesting to note: Shelby and Rachel have been issued sweatshirts of the same color.

Field Note #094 – Back home in Texas, Shelby blew out and straightened her hair every day.

Field Note #095 – Shelby’s dad owns this faith-based spinning studio, which is called All Rise Cycling.

Field Note #100 – The bowling alley is one of the main hangouts for high schoolers in Fort Travis, Shelby’s hometown. On weekend nights, it’s basically either that, the all-night diner off the highway, or a patch of woods next to the cemetery that everyone calls “The Smoke Hole.”

Field Note #101 – Becca’s all-time high bowling score? 249. Shelby’s? 94.

Field Note #103 – Toni is a collector of mementos. She’s got a cigar box full of souvenirs that she carries with her whenever she moves to a new home.

Field Note #109 – To describe her after-school drink of choice, Martha says “pop,” which gives her away as a Midwesterner. Based on where they live, here’s a breakdown of how our girls refer to sugary carbonated beverages: Martha and Toni say “pop”; Rachel, Nora, Fatin, and Leah say “soda”; Shelby says “coke.”

Field Note #111 – Nora’s fishing net is made from suitcase mesh.

Field Note #112 – Nora was a pioneer of the thumb-holes-in-sleeves look at her middle school. She used to cut the holes herself and reinforce the edges with a needle and thread until it became a style and you could buy shirts with pre-made ones.

Field Note #114 – Shelby has already mentioned that she once took down a ten-point buck. Her dad offered to have its head stuffed and mounted, but Shelby declined. She told him it wouldn’t match the aesthetic of her room… but deep down, something bothered her about celebrating the death of an animal in that way.

Field Note #115 – This is Martha’s first year not having to share a room with her sisters. She got her brother’s room when he moved out. In the ridiculously hot summer of 2014, one of his sticks of deodorant melted into the carpet. If you sniff deeply enough, you can still detect a whiff of pine-scented endurance anti-perspirant.

Field Note #116 – Toni is demonstrating experienced wilderness peeing position: butt behind the heels, knees behind the toes, peeing down an incline so it doesn’t splash back on her.

Shadow & Bone 1x07

I would love, LOVE to have Aleksander’s power as a shadow summoner. Without being twisted and warped by morzost. I mean look at it, sure being able to summon light is neat but to have darkness, to have it pool around you like that and consume everything.

“Just mortal.” His expression… 💔💔

I finally realize where I recognized Baghra’s actress from. Harry Potter the first one. She taught them how to fly on brooms.

Look at him, he can hardly handle it when Inej is injured:

But all I can think about is how his hair is so fluffy and that I wanna run my fingers through it.

“I’m fantastic.” Right you are Jesper, but hold up we’re not just gonna speed past that like you didn’t just fix Kaz’s cane. Very subtle.

Man, Mal is just constantly having hard time. He’s been beat up more than anyone throughout this whole season.

“I believe in myself… and you. And Jesper.” And this is why I prefer Kaz. He may try to deny it, but he needs them and knows that.

“Because we flock to your bidding.” You’ve got that man all wrong…

It’s always ‘I love you’ but never ‘No saint has ever watched over me. Not like you have.’

If Inej didn’t have the slightest idea that she has Kez Brekker wrapped around her pretty little finger before, she does now.

“Jes?” His face… 🤣🤣

“It’s suli for friendship.”

“No it’s not.”

These three are so chaotic!! Half the time I forget these characters are teenagers.

“I’m not gonna kill you Mal. I don’t need to. Time will do it for me.” That’s fucking cold as ice. I LOVE IT!!

Kaz holds up his cane, after he knocked out one of the guard.

“Oh. Well, isn’t that convenient for you?”

No Means No, 2nd Edition: This is another version of a previously written story in which Ruby raped August in 1x17. This was actually the version I'd started writing first but I ended up going a different direction. I kept the skeleton of this version around though and now I present it to you here. Enjoy. Pulling Back The Veil: Crowley approaches Abigail to make a deal. After she turns him down, she gets help from another source. Prompt filled: Day 22- Pick Your Poison

Hiding In Plain Sight, Chapter 2: Cordell reacts to Liam being their neighbor and we get a glimpse into how Micki and Cordell first met. Prompt filled: Alt prompt 7- Protective

Basic Instinct: In which Cordell storms down to Desert Speed Wars to pick up his kids and his car. Shannon and her buddies have varied responses. Prompt filled: Day 24- Fight Flight or Freeze.

Familial Invasion: Sam and Dean think that Henry should be involved in their search for John. But finding him won't be as easy as they thought. Prompt filled: Day 25- "You better start talking."

No Man Left Behind: Trey snuck Cordell over the border in order to take care of him. Cordell doesn't quite understand why. Prompt filled: Day 26- "Why did you save me?"

We Just Need to Talk: Liam has a nightmare about his time in captivity and goes looking for comfort. After witnessing Cordell have a nightmare too, he decides enough is enough. They don’t have to talk about what happened, but they are going to engage in some brotherly cuddles and at least acknowledge that there’s a problem. Prompt filled: Day 27- Muffled Screams

The Missing Piece: Liam finds out that Ben was the one to figure out he was missing. He doesn't take it well. Prompt filled: Day 28- Punching the Wall

Handle With Care: Abigail Walker is trying to care for her wound. She gets some unexpected help. Prompt filled: Day 29- What Doesn't Kill Me....

A Study In Arrogance: 3x02 AU- Stella promises Shannon she can get the money, she just needs a little time. Shannon decides to take August as collateral. Chapter 1 Prompt filled: Day 30- Note To Self: Don't Get Kidnapped; Chapter 2 Prompt filled: Day 31- "You can rest now."

rating william crying scenes

- 1x04 dissonance theory: fully obsessed with this bc it feels so inexplicable in context by anything other than vibes. literally he is just feeling some type of way about dolores talking about her dad and their herd and her existential confusion. incredibly wholesome and sweet also he SMILES through the tears which is just so much 9/10

- 1x07 trompe l'oeil: this ones pretty straightforward he's just feeling confused and frustrated and sad because he's engaged and he accidentally fell in love with a robot instead of his fiancée. however im living for the very poignant sense during his little "pretending" monologue that he's forcing out things he's never told anyone about before as well as the hilarious classic-william side fact that he's trying to communicate the sentiment "i love you" without once deviating from talking about himself. solid cry but other things about the scene overshadow the tears 6/10

1x09 the well-tempered clavier: this one's just hard to watch :/ nothing really fun about this scene everybody who matters is miserable and they don't even get to be the ones making each other miserable 2/10

2x02 reunion: fully insane of him to be sitting there telling dolores how little she matters to him while he is visibly and audibly a hairs breadth away from falling apart right in front of her. kind of have to respect the audacity to be honest and it is pretty classic william hilarity. better luck disguising the shaky voice next time king however this scene and everything he says and the fact he's in tears during it do make me want to eat glass 10/10

2x07 phase space: manipulating his own daughter with crocodile tears is one of the absolute funniest things this man has ever done. the real kicker is that they actually weren't crocodile tears, i think he was genuinely feeling those emotions while talking to her but knew all along that he was going to ditch her anyways which is just even more incredible. world's worst dad :) 8/10

3x04 the mother of exiles: i actually don't remember if i saw tears in his eyes during this episode but im assuming they were in there somewhere. obsessed with him doing a full mental and emotional breakdown during this episode but my favorite part is actually how quickly he pulls it together because that's his secret cap, he's always insane and groundhog day looping his dark night of the soul. either way not a ton of impact from the crying as opposed to other stuff 4/10

2x09 vanishing point: 😬 i can't. talk about this one it hurts too much unfortunately! suffice it to say............ sad 10/10

BONUS s2 post credits scene: hard to really parse the emotion of the scene bc it's so disconnected from everything else going on in the season however this is a fun and funky and fresh little moment. like there's no context to it so i can't rate it higher than a 5 but it is very on brand. yer in a prison of yer own sins.... 5/10
