Title: In Amsterdam Summary: After realizing that Saehyun isn’t having as much fun on tour as he is, Woodam decides to make it up to her by dragging her out of her hotel room.

Pairing: Woodam x Saehyun Genre: Fluff , relationship building Word Count: 1.8k Warnings: None that I could think of besides that it’s partially edited so there may be some mistakes. But please let me know if you think something deserves a warning!!

SUMMER 2014, AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS

“Dude, get ready.” Cyth emerged from the bathroom, running a fine toothed comb through his hair. “The pyrotech boys are waiting for us in the lobby.”

Woodam lounged on his hotel bed with his laptop in his lap. He was wearing his grubby sweatpants and a shirt so old that the lettering on it was worn off, completely contrasting the designer button up that Cyth was currently sporting. He tried to make himself look as obstinate as possible.

“You backing out?” Cyth asked, a twinge of disappointment in his voice. The hurt in his older friend’s voice almost made Woodam reconsider his plan, but he stood his ground.

“Yeah man, I’m just not really feeling up to it tonight.” Woodam shrugged, looking at his computer screen rather than his friend’s face.

“Okay... Sure.” Sungho didn’t argue. The good thing about rooming with someone who’s introverted; they never question your need for space. The rapper headed to the door, flinging his coat over his shoulder. “I’ll try to be home before two, but... no promises.”

“Alright, be safe!” Woodam called, pretending to search something on his laptop.

“Again, no promises.” Cyth smirked at him from the doorway before closing the door.

Woodam waited fifteen minutes before snapping his laptop shut. By now, the staff members should either be experiencing the nightlife that Amsterdam had to offer or unwinding in the privacy of their own rooms. It was time for him to get a move on.

Discarding his worn out clothes, he put on a nicer pair of jeans and one of his less-shabby sweatshirts. After a quick comb through his hair and a spritz of cologne for good luck, he exited his hotel room, heading for Saehyun’s down the hall.

Ever since Vice’s tour started, Saehyun, their photographer and past savior, had been dodging invites from Vice and the rest of the staff to unwind after work. At first, Woodam respected the rejection, even though he wished she occupied one of the empty chairs when the staff went out for dinner. But as the tour went on, Woodam felt like it was unfair that he was making all these memories while Saehyun, the person who saved him from a sasaeng all those years ago, sat alone in her hotel room. Tonight, he was going to repay her.

Woodie knocked on her door, swaying back and forth on the balls of his feet while he waited for her to answer. He heard the shuffle of footsteps stop before the door. Woodam looked at the peephole and waved enthusiastically. He was sure he heard a sigh before the door opened.

“Sorry, Woodam. I’m not going out tonight.” Saehyun said, giving him a false look of apology.

“Oh, no worries, me either.” Woodam beamed. The apologetic smile on the photographer’s face melted, being replaced with a mild look of bewilderment.

“Huh?”

“The boys already left. I was wondering if you wanted to hang out?” Woodam proposed, his mouth dry. In his head, Saehyun would accept the invitation without hesitation and the rest of their night would be full of unforgettable memories. However, the strained smile on Saehyun’s face was bringing Woodam back to reality. Before Saehyun could give him an excuse, he continued speaking. “I don’t want to invade your space but you just seemed really stressed lately and I’m worried that you’re overworking yourself. I’m just worried.”

Saehyun licked her lower lip, mulling the proposal over. Then she looked over her shoulder, surveying her current living situation.

“Um, would you like to step in for a minute? We can plan out what we want to do.” She offered tentatively.

“Only if you’re comfortable.” Woodam said sincerely. “You have the right to tell me to go away.”

A ghost of a smile quirked on Saehyun’s lips as she stepped aside and welcomed him into her hotel room.

The room was clean enough, but it was obvious that Saehyun had been living out of it for the duration of their time in Amsterdam. A collection of discarded takeout boxes were crammed into the overflowing trash can. Her pre-planned outfits for the week were neatly folded on the spare bed. Books were stacked on her nightstand, titles that Woodam had noticed several times on the job sight between breaks.

Woodie gestured to a well-worn paperback book. “Didn’t you finish that in Germany?” He asked.

Saehyun shrugged. “I’m re-reading it. I didn’t bring as much reading material as I thought I did.”

Woodam perked up, an idea of how they can spend their night casting over him. “Hey, let’s go shopping for a new book for you to read. My treat.”

Saehyun gave him an appreciative smile. “That’s sweet of you, Woodie, but it’s not necessary.”

“Saehyun, come on.” Woodam pouted, giving the photographer pleading eyes. “You’ve been stuck in this hotel room for two nights now. It’ll be nice to get some fresh air, huh?”

Woodam knew no one could resist his pouting, and Saehyun was no exception. Within ten minutes the pair was exiting the hotel, heading towards the downtown area.

It didn’t take long for Woodam to locate the bookstore he mentioned. The outside was covered in ivy and had little window boxes filled with multicolored flowers. A string of delicate fairy lights draped over the doorway and windows. It looked like something out of a fairytale. Woodie opened the door for Saehyun and watched with satisfaction as his photographer’s jaw dropped every so slightly.

The inside of the bookstore was even more magical. There were books stacked from the floor to the ceiling, teetering in precarious towers. Paper mobiles hung from the rafters, taking shapes of animals or hot air balloons. Just like outside, there were fairylights draped over bookshelves and dangling from the ceiling. It was like stepping into a whole other world.

“Wow.” Saehyun mouthed, looking around with wide eyes. Woodie smiled at Saehyun’s endearing amazement. He let Saehyun wander around as he followed behind her like a tethered puppy, occasionally glancing at titles as they passed. Unfortunately, the bulk of the inventory was written either in Dutch or English. As Saehyun began to notice, her smile started fading and becoming more strained.

Woodie looked around for something to cheer Saehyun up. His eyes fell on a display a few paces away. He walked over and picked up a copy, hurrying back over with a smile on his face.

“What’s that?” Saehyun asked. Woodam held it up proudly. Saehyun arched an eyebrow, looking not nearly as impressed as Woodam imagined.

“A coloring book?” Saehyun wrinkled her nose.

“An adult coloring book.” Woodam emphasized, flipping through the pages, displaying all the intricate line drawings. Saehyun still didn’t seem hooked. Woodam snapped the book shut, accepting defeat.

“Okay… What about…” Woodam looked around. He spent about fifteen minutes searching around the store for something Saehyun would like. Unfortunately, all he knew about Saehyun was that she liked to take pictures and that she probably wanted Woodam to leave her alone. He came up empty handed, and Saehyun looked bored.

“I don’t know…” Woodam sulked, glancing around the bookstore one last time. “I think we struck out.” “It’s getting late anyways.” Saehyun shrugged. “We should probably get back to the hotel before people realize we’re gone.”

Woodam followed Saehyun towards the door silently, thoroughly discouraged that he couldn’t make this night memorable. He doesn’t even know if Saehyun smiled once tonight. That hurt Woodam the most.

As they were passing the last row of displays, something caught Woodam’s eye. He halted in his tracks. To his left was a tall shelf full of journals. The covers ranged from classic leather bound to sparkled with rhinestones. Saehyun realized Woodam wasn’t behind her and backtracked to stand next to him.

Woodam glanced over at the girl with a grin on his face. “What about writing your own story?”

“Got any ideas about your first entry?” Woodam questioned as they walked down the sidewalk. Above them, the street lights buzzed, casting the two of them in an peachy tint. Saehyun peeked into the paper bag, examining her recent purchase. “Not sure.” Saehyun mused. “Maybe I’ll make it into a burn book.”

Woodam’s eyebrows shot up. “Working for HBH is that bad huh?” He teased.

Saehyun rolled her eyes. “I didn’t mean it like that. Most of the staff is lovely. I think.” A puzzled expression casted over her features. “It’s kind of hard to tell who’s nice and who isn’t if everyone talks to you simply.”

“You haven’t made any friends yet?” Woodam asked with concern.

Saehyun dryly chuckled. “I mean… I’m not really here to make friends. I’m here to photograph a boy band and to build up my resume.”

“Still. It must get lonely if you don’t have someone to talk to.” Woodam sympathized. Saehyun didn’t respond. Laughter and cheers from the bars that lined the streets filtered into the night, contrasting the stiff silence between them.

“Are you okay?”

Woodam had been wanting to ask this question for weeks now. With no other staff members or his friends around, the question came out easily. Saehyun looked up at Woodam, her expression downcast.

“I mean… Yeah. I’m okay. But I guess you’re right. I am a little lonely.”

The silence returned.

“You should write about tonight.” Woodam suggested as they were two blocks from their hotel. “In your journal, I mean.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. You might be less lonely when you look back on it.” Woodam smiled. Saehyun fought off a grin as she gave him a playful shove. “Yeah, I’ll look back on it and write about how you tried to get me to buy a coloring book.” Saehyun chuckled. “Hey, it was a good idea! You’re just boring.” “I’m not boring.” “I’d say otherwise…” “You don’t know me.” Saehyun arched her eyebrows playfully. Woodam slowed his walking, nodding his head.

“You’re right. I don’t really know you.” The idol gave the photographer a small smirk. “Maybe we should hang out more. Then I’ll be able to decide if you’re boring or not.”

Saehyun’s smile melted a little. “That’s sweet, Woodie, but… I’m concerned of how it’ll look to everyone else if we start hanging out. My colleagues know I used to be a fansite, you know? They already have their assumptions as to why I’m here. I don’t want to look any less professional than I already do.”

Woodam nodded in understanding. He looked around them. There were people around, but no one seemed to be paying any attention to them. He pointed a finger to the sky. “What if we hung out like this?”

“At night?” Saehyun reacted as if Woodam suggested that they lay in the middle of the road. “If we get caught, I’ll be booted in a heartbeat.”

“So we won’t.” Woodam grinned. “I’m better at keeping secrets than you may think.”

Saehyun ran a hand through her hair, tugging the roots back as she thought about the proposal. Finally, her hand fell from her locks, the strain on her scalp being released.

“I guess it was nice not spending a night alone.” She caved. Woodam beamed, resuming his walking.

“Exactly.” Woodam said satisfactorily.

Mori Girl Challenge: Day 5

Name 5 things you dislike about Mori

Of course, nothing is perfect, so, incredibly enough, there’re also some things we don’t like about our favourite things - and that goes for Mori, too. Thus here are the 5 things I dislike the most about it:

1. People using the #Mori hashtag (as well as #morikei, #morigirl, etc) without having any remote idea of what it is, or without having at least done some research. I’ve heard of people branding themselves as ‘mori’ by simply adding a flower crown filter into a modern, classic, mainstream outfit. That’s not mori, that’s just mucking around!

So please, do yourselves a favour and do some research about a style in particular before claiming your belonging to it. TY in advance! 😊

2. The unsuitability of the style to be worn in warmer seasons or areas. Because of its layers, Mori isn’t precisely ideal for especially hot summers - which is the case of Southern Spain - and hot, arid (or humid) areas in the Caribbean, Central Africa, South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific, etc. Unless someone can get by by wearing fewer layers, or be actually bold to create a new variation, you should go for another styles fitter for these kind of climates (i.e. Boho Chic). 😐

3. The lack of flexibility when using non-natural fabrics that your clothing may be made of. I mean, I’m completely aware that polyester isn’t precisely one of the most beloved materials by Mori (nor any other community or individual people concerned by the environment), and there’re too many reasons to understand why - but what if you just can’t find or afford clothes purely made of cotton, natural tulles, wool, etc. for whatever reason? Of course, you can take a look at the tag indicating the composition of the textile, but it’s always recommendable that it’s made with as much natural - even ecological - fibres as possible. Plus, there’re also new materials, such as Cupro, Modal, and Tencel, which are deemed environmentally friendly.

4. The shrinking community, which causes the fashion to become a sort of wallflower in both Japanese and global fashion. The good news is, that the smaller a community is, the less prone of catching and having toxic people within. But of course, it also makes me sad that most people ignore a trend in fashion and lifestyle with so much charm and potential as Mori Kei.

5. This one is a direct consequence of the former point - the lack of incoming sub-styles and sister styles to Mori. I mean, we’ve got loads of variations, such as ‘classic’, bohemian, dark/gothic Mori, etc. as well as Hama, Kawa, Yama Kei, etc. But since the fashion almost faded into obscurity around 2014, it’s now almost impossible to see new trends and/or substyles coming into light, which is a real shame. 😔😞 And thus, the production of Mori dress up games for Internet sites also came to a halt. 😞

Raphael's heart rose and lodged firmly in his throat as the sound of the egregious squeaking doorknob filling his sensitive eardrums. The anxiety and fear that had wedged itself deep inside of his chest had only slightly alleviated in hearing the turning metal and the unlocking of the latch before revealing to him who was behind it.

April.

The form he'd studied and known so well was indeed right in front of him; her eyes lowered as she hauled herself into the door, not taking notice of him whatsoever as she turned her back to him to lock it behind her. A quick scan over her body told him immediately that she was not bleeding or in dire need of medical attention and that alone had his anxiety wane if only slightly. It made it all the better seeing her enter her apartment without the asshole Casey Jones following behind like a damn poodle.

Yet there was a tenseness to her shoulders, the gait of her walk that was the very definition of exhaustion as she slowly locked her door and the safety latch with lazy precision. Raph didn't focus on that though; only savored the sight of bouncy brunette hair, pale skin, and beauty that for the past day, he worried he'd never see again.

Anxiety and panic that had been his constant (if only) companion for the past twenty four hours vacated as quickly as it arrived by the mere sight of her; the sensation akin to the rays of a summer sun breaking through a blizzard - relishing the comfort that indeed meant that April was indeed, finally home.

"April!" the word was out before he had a chance to stop his exclamation, gigantic body launching itself more gracefully than should have been possible over the couch. Escaping the location he'd paced for hours before landing in front of the pretty brunette who did not have the reaction he hoped for.

April screamed.

Sudden, shrill screech assaulting his ear drums and her hands shook, dropping her purse and keys to the floor in the process.

Once her screams stopped, when she realized he was not some murderous intruder, her cornflower blue eyes were covered in a sheet of ice when they met his. "Aw, dammit, Raph!" April admonished with a huff, picking up her purse and slamming it onto the small table nearby as she gasped to regain her lost breath. "You scared the hell out of me!" she screamed and as happy as he was to hear her voice and see her indeed breathing and alive in front of him, the words cut deeper than he cared to admit.

April stood there for long minutes just staring at him, chest heaving with frantic breaths and for the first time since she arrived, Raph finally got a good look at her and realized not all seemed to be perfectly fine like he initially thought.

First off, she didn't look exactly like the April he knew. Still wearing day old make-up, eyeliner and mascara smudged at the corners of her eyes and under her lower lids where it only brought out the purple bags in high contrast compared to the milkiness of her skin. Clothes that normally were crisp and clean were impossibly rumpled, hair that was usually so nicely combed or put in a high ponytail was in disarray around her tense shoulders.

It wasn't until long moments later when he realized he'd been staring and he still never responded to her rather aggressive words.

"I was fuckin' worried, April!" he growled out, hands tense at his sides. Anger. It was always so easy to turn to anger - no matter how much April changed him, that was a part of him that would never change.

The brunette let out a rather undignified sigh before turning away from him and walking in a beeline toward the bathroom.

Not sure what else to do, he followed.

April sighed, "...Why, Raphael?" seemingly shrugging off his concern as she grabbed a few Tylenol out of the vanity; completely ignoring the look of horror Raphael didn't even bother hiding.

"Ya told me ya were comin' back after the game so I waited all night and fuckin' day for ya!" Raphael explained, using the vast recesses of his self-control to keep himself from lashing out in pure rage that lay just beneath the surface but damn, was it getting hard to keep it at bay. "I-I was worried…" he growled out to reiterate the fact she scared the fuck out of him but he kept his words short.

This was not how he expected their reunion to go…

April swallowed a few chugs of water, chest heaving when she finally placed the glass back down to the bathroom sink with a light clink. He patiently allowed her a moment to lean against the porcelain, dainty fingers pinching at the bridge of her nose. As much as he felt sympathy to her plight; despising seeing her in any kind of pain, even a headache, he needed answers. Something to abolish the sensation of his gut coiling and acid eating through the abdominal lining.

"W-Well, why didn't you just call me?"

"I DID!" Raphael bellowed out, surprised at himself by how he immediately took a step back from her after doing do. His heart ached and hammered in his chest as he took another deep breath of the air around her and instantly regretted it…

Casey.

The distinct scent of the human male wafted unwarranted into his nostrils; the distinct, male scent permeated April's even worst than the awful reek of alcohol leeching from her being. Scents often combine innocently but this was no friendly mixing of aromas; no quick hug or flinging his arm over her shoulder or even sitting for hours together. As much as he hated to admit it, this was something more and the connotations of it all hit him like a runaway train. Completely blindsided by where exactly April was last night and most of today…

A sharp pain exploded deep in his chest as the truth hit him hard…

"...you did?" April asked as almost an afterthought, not even noticing Raphael's sudden inner turmoil. The brunette merely reaching into her skinny jeans pocket and pulling out her small cell phone. She turned on the device and her eyes alighted and widened when she noticed more missed calls and texts than she probably ever received in her life.

"What the? B-But - why the hell is it on silent? Ugh, Casey…" She muttered under her breath as she turned back on her ringer and shoved the device back into her pocket.

April lifted her eyes and finally met Raph's, but this time he was looking away.

Regret hit her fast; instantly hating herself for how she lashed out at him. It didn't matter if it felt like she'd taken an ax to the center of her skull, she never reacted to Raph in that way and she instantly regretted the harsh words and reaction to his presence.

"Raph…I'm so sorry." she stated honestly knowing he needed an explanation so she provided one, "Things just got a little crazy last night, I guess I just lost track of time and alcohol didn't help. Hey! The game was a blowout - you'll be happy to know Casey's team got pummeled into the dirt." she laughed softly but there wasn't much mirth there when she saw the terrapin's attention was somewhere off to her left.

Crestfallen, quiet and amber eyes awash with an emotion she wasn't familiar with and it fucking broke her heart to see Raphael like that.

Wracking her brain for what had she said to make him react in such a way...

Raphael remained completely silent.

The things he cared little to think about that occurred between April and Casey last night filtering through his mind and shattering whatever was left of his blackened heart in his chest. The detective's scent permeating her aroma to where her normal beautiful fresh scent was masked with the detective's musk and the boozy scent of alcohol.

Raph could not deny that he had his suspicions, the rampant and excessive doubts, and yet the pain of knowing the harsh truth was nothing he was prepared for...yet, here it was. All rumpled clothes, messy hair, tired blue eyes and the scent of Casey Jones clinging to it all.

Anger fading like sand between his fingers, Raphael finally accepted the truth he never wanted to.

Who the actual fuck was he kidding?

…A freak like him never stood a fucking chance at winning April's heart...

Said heart instantly shattering, splintering like broken glass in the confines of his shaking chest, Raphael kept his face as stoic and neutral as possible even if the back of his eyes were nothing but searing fire. If Splinter taught him anything it was this - and as per usual, Raphael pushed through the pain; meeting her blue eyes and pretending like he wasn't actually dying on the inside…

"Oh - uh, that's good." Raph muttered with a grimace disguised as a lazy smirk.

April, thankfully, seemed to buy it regardless.

"He's a crummy detective so why wouldn't he be nothin' but a shitty hockey-player?" he continued even if it was just a husk of words. Raphael was merely grateful he was able to speak above the sob that threatened to choke him.

April smiled at him then and for the first time he could ever recall, it fucking hurt.

It was the moment all the precious instances of their time together seemed like a big fluke. All the nights they spent hanging out, watching movies, and her languid touches, long hugs, kind words, and even her going as far as kissing him upon the cheek, that one accidental brush on the corner of his mouth as she fingered his scar - it made him feel absolutely sick.

Those moments he treasured so close to his heart really meant fucking nothing to her this whole time.

April's complete nonchalance at the entire situation made Raphael's stomach turn rapidly. The following moments where he pretended to be okay were the most heart-wrenching experience in his life as he acted as if nothing was amiss as she continued with her story.

"Yeah, it was an awful game, but anyway, we ended up meeting some of his cop buddies there and went to a few bars afterward, and…" April's words turned to nothing but garbled noise in his mind.

The red-banded terrapin didn't want to hear any excuse she may have - her scent didn't lie even if she may want to protect or deter him from the truth. As much as he wanted to bolt, his feet were frozen to the ground and Raphael merely found himself nodding at the appropriate times as the brunette continued on with her story, the words not even registering due to the pounding of his pulse in his ears and the shattering of his heart.

Raphael was not sure how long he stood there pretending he wasn't falling apart even if everything inside of him was raw and festering; the only one mercy he was provided was a beep, an alarm he forgot he set, coming from his cell phone. Large green, scarred hands immediately reached for solace in that small device - knew instantly he needed to pretend it was from Leo. It was enough to give him an escape, an excuse to leave before his rage completely exploded outside the confines of his chest.

"...Raph? Who's th -" April began and Raph didn't dare look at her before he lied through his teeth.

"I gotta go. It's Leo - patrol is on me tonight." he said rapidly, cutting her off and ignoring any former or future statement she had may have made given.

One abrupt glance at her face showcased her shock and confusion. Raphael wasn't never one to interrupt (especially her) and by his quick words and her reaction, he could tell instantly that she knew he was lying. For since when did he ever listen to ol' Fearless?

"Oh... Um...b-but I just got here." April chuckled, trying desperately to lighten the mood it seemed. "You waited forever for me to get home and I need to make it up to you, so c'mon! Stay! I'll order your favorite pizza and we can catch the game. Besides, what's the rush? It's still early and you've made Leo wait plenty of times before. It's one of your favorite hobbies, remember?"

Hands trembling (hopefully unnoticed) at his side, he shoved the cell phone into his belt before uttering, "Yeah…Sorry. Duty calls. I'll uh, see ya later, April." with those few words uttered, he was running. Approaching, opening and gone out the kitchen window within a mere blink of an eye, leaving April hardly any time to make it to the open pane before he was already nearing the rooftop.

Raphael didn't even stop or frankly even care upon hearing the brunette yell, "Raphael! Wait! Where are you going?!" before he'd already made it across to the other side of the rooftop and jumping to the next one. No destination in mind, he ran anywhere that wasn't her apartment.

The harsh cold wind stung his face, leaving tracks of frigid ice on his cheeks was when he realized he was crying.

Raphael choked it down, continuing to sprint - the freedom he once felt from such an act felt deliberately mocking. The same wind he'd appreciated against his scales was just making his tears of hurt and betrayal more apparent.

In a fit of unbelievable rage at the utter agony wedged deep inside of him, he'd jumped blindly upon the edge of a roof.

Even before he jumped, he knew the trajectory was off but found he could care less when he found himself falling, barreling down between the buildings, his leg hitting the side of one and scraping along the skin til he crashed into a pile of trash bins and bags at the bottom of a cold (thankfully destitute) alley.

The pain etching into his skin from the burn of the stone was just enough let up to keep his tears at bay for a moment. Focusing on the physical pain rather than his heart imploding in his chest was all he had at this moment. In a blind fury, he hauled himself to his unsteady feet, smashing his fists over and over again into the bricks, not caring how his knuckles bled and body screamed at him to just STOP.

It was only when he heard a tumultuous crack through the deafening sound of blood rushing in his ears that Raphael finally stilled; grasping at the freshly blood-stained bricks in a vain attempt to hold himself up. Chest heaving and lungs burning fiercely, his legs gave out from underneath him and he fell onto his ass with a muted thud.

Tears began dripping down his face in a torrent - his chest nothing more than a smoldering crater as he allowed himself to fall apart in a dark dank alleyway.

Lupine Publishers | Fertilizer Effects on Nutrient Elements, Total Polyphenols and Anti-oxidant Contents of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) Leaves

Abstract

A great deal of research has been geared toward the calyces of roselle due to their medicinal properties. Though leaves of roselle have been consumed by diversed ethnic groups, little research efforts have been focused on leaves due to unestablished beneficial bioactivities. This paper provides preliminary data on the effect of various types and rates of fertilizer on fresh fruit yields, total polyphenol and antioxidant contents of the leaves of roselle (Senegal accession). Fertilizer applications at planting time had nonsignificant increasing effect on fresh fruit yield/plant and non-significant reduction in total polyphenol and antioxidant contents of the leaves. Inconsistent effects of applied fertilizer on macro and micro nutrient contents of the leaves were observed. In general, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Mn and Zn were significantly (P<0.05) increased by selective fertilizer types and rates while Cu and Fe contents were not significantly affected by fertilization. Further studies on fertilization along with increased frequencies of application are needed to validate these findings.

Introduction

More than 300 species of Hibiscus species (Malvacea family) can be found growing in both tropical and subtropical regions of the world [1]. Roselle, Hibiscus sabdariffa L., is only one of the hibiscus species that has its sepals of the flower developed into a swollen red calyx enclosing the mature fruit at maturity. The calyces are found to be rich in nutrients and photochemical compounds that exhibits anti-oxidant activities Consequently, economic interests have been mainly focused on roselle calyces which are used worldwide in the production of herbal tea, cold refreshing drinks, jellies, jam, sauces, chutneys, wines, preserves and food colorants (D'Heureux-Calix and Badrie, 2004). Because of the folk's medicinal uses, a great deal of research has been geared toward roselle calyces. Most research has been heavily directed toward the studies of phytochemistry, anti-oxidant properties and effects of calyx extracts on anti-oxidant activities, and other bioactivities such as anti-inflammatory action, anti-microbial, and antitumor activities [2] and Wang 2015. Even though leaves are widely consumed by a diverse population of ethnic groups, particularly in tropical regions of Africa, little research effort has been focused on leaves. In recent studies [2], roselle leaves are found to be a good source of phenolic acids and flavonoids that exhibit anti-oxidant activities. The purpose of this preliminary study is to evaluate the effect of various types and rates of fertilizer application on roselle fruit yield, nutritional, phenolic and antioxidant content of the leaves.

Materials and Methods

Chemicals and reagents

ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sufonic acid), potassium persulfate were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich of St. Louis, MO, USA. Folin Ciocalteu's phenol reagent was purchased from MP Biomedicals of Solon, OH, USA. Water and methanol were purchased from Fisher Scientific of Fair Lawn, BJ, USA.

Experiment and plant samples

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of the applied fertilizers at planting time on roselle plants of Senegal accession during the 2014 growing season at Southern University's research farm, Baton Rouge, Louisiana which has a subtropical climate (30.5240N and 91.1900W and elevation of 22m). The area has an average precipitation of 1700mm and the average annual temperature is 19.70C. The field has a silty clay loam soil with a pH of 7.1. The seeds of Senegal accession were planted in the 2x2 cell-pack trays in the greenhouse at the beginning of April, 2014. Seedlings were hand-transplanted into the field one month after germination. A completely randomized design with a total nine applications as treatments. These treatments were the control; 3, 6 and 9# (lb=454g)/30.48m. of organic fertilizer 4-2-2, respectively; 3, 6 and 9# (454g)/30.48m of organic fertilizer 8-5-5, respectively; and 3 and 6# (lb=454g)/30.48 m. of inorganic fertilizer 13-13-13, respectively. Each treatment consisted of 16 plants spaced at 6 feet (1.83m) between plants within a 3.5ft (1.07m) row. Between row spacing was 8 feet (2.44m.). Fertilizers were applied and incorporated on top of the raised bed. Seedlings were planted one day after fertilizer applications. Leaves were randomly collected in late July from branches at waist height from 10 plants of each treatment.

Nutrient elemental analysis

Leaves in the brown paper bags were dried at 500C in the Precision Thelco Laboratory oven for 8 hours in the oven and then ground using Thomas-Wiley Model 4 grinder with a 30 mesh screen. The ground samples in the vials were subject to one-hour of drying before they were stored in the desiccator to prevent moisture contamination. Three individual 0.5g of composite ground leaf samples from each treatment were placed in 50mL Digi-tubes (SCP Sciences) and were digested using DEENA automatic digester. Each digested sample in the Digi tube was brought up to a total volume of 20mL with distilled water. The solution with digested sample was vacuum-filtered with a 1.0 micron Digi-filter. The filtrate was analyzed by SPECTRO ARCOS ICAP for Al, Bo, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, P, K, NA, S and Zn. Separately, 0.15g of dried leaf sample was used for determining the amount of carbon and nitrogen using LECO CN Analyzer.

Sample preparation for total phenol and antioxidant activity determination

The method of sample preparation was adopted from Xu [3] and Zhen [2]. A 100mg of each dried and ground leaf sample was measured and placed in a volumetric flask. Twenty-five mL of 70% (v/v) methanol/water with 0.1% acetic solution was added into the flask. The sample extraction was then put in ultrasonic water bath for 10 minutes followed by shaking at room temperature for overnight. The extract of each sample was then filtered through 0.45um filter. The filtrate was used for the Folin-Ciocalteu and ABTS radical scavenging assays.

Phenolic content determination (Folin-Ciocalteu assay)

The Folin-Ciocalteu assay with modifications [4] used by Zhen [2] was adopted for the determination of the total phenolic content of the leaves. 40ul of the prepared leaf extract was mixed with 900ul diluted Folin Ciocalteu's reagent followed by incubation at room temperature for 5 minutes. Then, 400ml of 15% sodium carbonate was added. The mixture was allowed to react at room temperature for 45 minutes. The UV absorption of the mixture solution at wavelength of 752nm was measured against a blank solution. The standard curve was measured based on the prepared gallic acid standard solution (0.38, 0.19, 0.095 and 0.475mg/ml). The result was transformed as mg/g of gallic acid. The results were calculated from the mean of three replicates.

In vitro antioxidant activity (ABTS radical scavenging assay)

The procedure of the decolonization of the ABTS radical cation [5] used by Zhen [2] was adopted for the determination of antioxidant activity. 38.4 mg of ABTS and 6.6 mg of potassium per sulfate were co-dissolved in 10ml of water and stored for 16 hours in the dark environment to form stable radical action (ABTS+). The stored radical solution was then diluted using ethanol to a concentration with UV absorption of 0.70+/-0.20 at734nm. 900ul of the diluted ABTS radical working solution was mixed with 10ul of the leaf extract followed by 20 minutes of reaction at room temperature. The decolonization of the mixed solution indicates that antioxidant compounds in the extract quenched ABTS radical actions. There was a quantitative relationship between the reduction absorbance at 734nm and the concentration antioxidants present in the sample [2]. The standard curve was built up by plotting the concentrations of Trolox against the percentage of inhibition. The value of antioxidant capacity of the sample was calculated as Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity. The final result was expressed as the % of antioxidant per dry weight basing on the calculation from the mean of three replicates.

Results and Discussion

Figure 1 shows the effects of the type of fertilizer and its rate on fresh fruit yield/plant. There was a trend to indicate that applied fertilizers increased fresh fruit yield of roselle of Senegal accession under this study. However, the yield increases were observed to be non-significant. Since all fertilizers were applied at the planting time in spring, the effect of fertilization might have faded away during the late summer and early fall during which fruits were produced. This fading effect of applied fertilizers can be supported by various extension publications indicating the recommended side-dressing of fertilizers are needed for various vegetable crops during the growth period [6-8]. Figure 2 shows the effects of the type and rate of fertilizer applied at planting time on the total polyphenol and antioxidant content of roselle leaves in % of dry weight. There appeared to have a trend that increased amounts and rates of fertilizer exhibited a reduction in total polyphenol content. The reduction in polyphenol content might be due to less nutritional stress by plants receiving increased amount of fertilizer. It is hypothesized here that further application of fertilizers to enhance plant growth and yield may cause significant reduction in polyphenol production. It had been reported that plants under stress provided more antioxidants in response to stresses [9-12].

Figure 3 shows the effects of the type and rate of fertilizer applied at planting time on (A) macro-nutrients and (B) micro-nutrients of roselle leaves. The results when the effects were compared to that of the Control treatment, showed that (a) 3# of organic fertilizer 4-2-2 and 3#, 6# and 9# of organic fertilizer significantly (P<0.05) increased N content of the leaves, (b) all fertilizer treatments had no significant effect on P content of the leaves, (c) 9# of organic fertilizer 4-2-2 significantly (P<0.05) increased K content of the leaves, (d) all fertilizer treatments had no significant effect on Ca content of the leaves, (e) 9# of organic fertilizer 4-2-2 , 6# and 9# of organic fertilizer 8-5-5 significantly (P<0.05) increased Mg content of the leaves, (f) 3#, 6# and 9# of organic fertilizer and 6# of inorganic fertilizer 13-13-13 significantly (P<0.05) increased S content of the leaves, (g) all fertilizer treatments had no significant effect on Cu and Fe contents of the leaves, (h) 3# and 6# of organic fertilizer significantly (P<0.05) increased B content of the leaves, (i) 3# and 9# of organic fertilizer 4-2-2, 9# of organic fertilizer 8-5-5 and 3# and 6# of inorganic fertilizer 13-13-13 significantly increased Mn content of the leaves and (j) 9# of organic fertilizer 4-2-2, 3#, 6# and 9# of organic fertilizer 8-5-5 and 6# of inorganic fertilizer significantly increased Zn content of the leaves. The results of this study showed inconsistent in nutrient elemental contents of plants in response to fertilizer treatments. In general, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Mn, and Zn were significantly increased by selective fertilizer types and rates while Cu and Fe were not significantly affected by the fertilizer applications.

Conclusion

Fertilizer applications at planting time enhanced many macro and micro nutrient elemental contents of roselle leaves but did not adequately affect fresh fruit yield, leaf total phenol and anti-oxidant contents. Reviewed literature provides evidence a significant increase in fruit yield can be obtained through an increase in fertilizer application as side-dressing. Evidence provided by literatures also suggests that an increase in fertilizer applications which reduce nutritional stress can also possibly reduce polyphenol content and antioxidant activity of roselle. Inconsistent results of this study suggest that further studies on the effect of fertilizer and the frequency of fertilizer application are needed to validate the results of these findings and conclusion.

This year’s Eclipse falls on the eve of the New moon, Elul, which will begin on the evening of the 22nd. Scripture is full of prophecy regarding wonders in heaven, signs in the earth, sun turning to darkness, and the moon turning to blood. Along with the event being a major one this year, it is not unusual to see natural events in human history tied to such things. The question is this. Will this year’s Eclipse that will cross the United States from the west coast to the east be a harbinger of prophetic human events that will occur in the earth? There is no doubt; the last major full eclipse of the sun that went from the West coast to the east happened just less than 100 years ago and great events occurred on that date!

One thing of note, April 11th signals the Pink Moon and another item of note that shows signs and wonders do appear in the heavens on a regular basis. But the events of such things are not to just be ignored, especially if they have historic connections and biblical foundations closely related to them.

Eclipse History: 1918

The last time an eclipse of this magnitude was in full ‘umbra’ and passed from the west to the east coast was some 99 years ago. During that year Louis Armstrong married Daisy Parker, the Great War in Europe was winding down and a pandemic of epic proportions hit the world. We know of that pandemic as the Spanish flu. It killed some 40 million in a matter of months. That year, as well, Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, the famed Red Baron of Germany was shot down and killed, Nelson Mandela was born that year on July 18, and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Chicago cubs to take the 1918 world series.

Today, just one year short of the century mark another famed eclipse will occur. Here in Wyoming the high plains and the open skies make for one of the best views on the planet for watching this year’s famed full eclipse on August 21st, 2017. Now it was just a while back in 1979 that a total solar eclipse occurred, but such an eclipse as this one which passed literally from one coast to the other was in 1918.

You can view the 1918 track of the eclipse as it went across the United States on the NASA Eclipse Website [see link]. To view the 2018 eclipse there is a wide swathe where the “dark shadow of the moon will pass. The Umbra or shadow will begin its journey far ‘Out in the North Pacific Ocean’ which will be almost 1,000 miles south of Alaskan Aleutian Islands. It will travel across the USA from coast to coast, a distance of “2,500” miles in just over One hour and a half. Casper Wyoming Eclipse 2017

Casper Wyoming is one of twelve smaller cities in the USA which will have a well-placed shot of this historic event. The Eclipse will move across Wyoming beginning at 11:34 am MDT on August 21st, 2017 and will take just 15 minutes to cross this great state of the west.

10:22 the moon touches the sun’s edge. Use your glasses or another filter to safely experience First Contact.

10:23-11:41 over the course of these 80 minutes, the moon appears to take an ever-growing bite from the sun as it becomes a shrinking sliver. Beads of light will shine through in certain places and disappear from others. Temperatures cool, and the sky gradually darkens from deep blue to twilight to black.

11:42 the eclipse approaches totality. As the last bit of the sun’s sliver shrinks away, the corona appears, and the Baily’s bead effect begins. Beads of light dance around the sun then fade away as the final bead brightens and expands into the highly-anticipated diamond ring effect.

11:43 the eclipse reaches totality. Remove your glasses for the next magical 2 minutes and 26 seconds. Catch an inimitable look within the universe as the eclipse creates a revealing hole cut into the sky. If you can pull your eyes away from this spectacle, notice the orange horizon that surrounds you. Most of all, appreciate this incredible but evanescent phenomenon.

11:45 totality ends. Put your glasses back on to see the moon’s journey back across the sun.

Casper Eclipse 1918 details:

In the Casper, Wyoming area the eclipse in its totality will be 146 seconds long. Festivities and activities will lead up to the eclipse. Two major events, the 2017 ASTROCON will be held at the Parkway Plaza Hotel and the Casper Eclipse festival with events listed all over the area. In Casper where there are only about 50,000 residents, the police are gearing up for the crowds which are estimated to range from 20,000-50,000 thousand people.

“The biggest concern is the influx of people, 50,000 in Natrona County and they’re predicting maybe up to a half-a-million or 500,000 for the state of Wyoming. We have very limited law enforcement, fire, medical resources and to deal with the influx of people from literally from all over the world that will be coming across the state.” – Stu Anderson, Natrona County Emergency Management.

The event also will be big around the viewing area crossing Wyoming. This is true for the National Guard camp at Gurnsey Wyoming. It is here that Students and scientists will be gathered for the event, with one group with the NASA sponsored program “Colorado Space Grant Consortium” who will work to launch a balloon and payload that will capture images and video of the event.

“It’s right in the path of totality,” he explained. “The eclipse runs right through this location. It’s nice open space, and great to do a balloon launch and great for the number of people who will want to come see an eclipse. Our goal is to be able to use this footage to show the public what it looks like.” Chris Koehler of CSGC

The only Customs and Border immigration officer for Wyoming, Dale Leatham has said that he has had calls from South Africa, Bahamas, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and from 14 other countries as well. All are interested in coming to Casper Wyoming to view the 2017 eclipse. Because Casper has an international airport, direct flights to this city are available. This makes the city a hub for such international travelers who follow such events.

Here the people and businesses have been gearing up for the crowds expected. The motels and hotels in the area are booked, with some estimates saying a few are left. But the truth is those who follow these events booked a long time ago. There are homes that are renting out rooms, camping sites available, and maybe a few places to park your RV at Walmart or Sam’s; if you are lucky enough. There is no doubt that this will be one hard week to get around in the Casper area. Also of concern is safety, for with such events and crowds there are those who come along for the ride to steal or pilfer what they can. In addition, these events can bring the threat of terrorism.

Viewing: Be sure to get Eclipse glasses before trying to watch the eclipse

Resources: If coming to our area, call one of the available resources below to help you

Preparedness: It is cold in Wyoming in the spring, fall, and winter, so be prepared. It is also Hot in the summer.

Security: Be on guard when coming to such events and know to be aware of your surroundings.

Safety: Try to travel or be in a group of those you know. If traveling alone be careful. It is always safer to travel in a pair at least

Stores: Be sure to bring with you extra blankets, coats, food, water, first aid; just in case.

Contacts: Be sure you leave with your friends and loved ones with your contact information and where you will be at all times, in case of emergency.

Human Events and Signs in the heavens

These are the days when we shall see signs in the heavens and in the earth. As we progress towards the very end of the end of days we shall see more. These signs point to the very prophecies coming true and those things which are written in the book. The last major signs we had were the double blood moons during 2014 and 2015 which occurred those years on the spring and fall feasts of the LORD. It also was a foretelling of major events to come. Those events were the major persecution and death of Christians and others as ISIS moved through Syria into Iraq and elsewhere. To date 2014 signaled the change in many things prophetically. Most important of those was the change in persecution of Christians. More blood has been shed since that time than in recent memory. Many believe that the Christians killed, imprisoned, and left homeless is greater than at any time in history. When we speak of the double blood moons occurring during the feasts in the spring and fall of the aforementioned two year time span, it is definitely connected to human events. In short, we find that the Lord gives us signs in the heavens during the great events change in the earth.

Today, this eclipse is the first such to move from coast to coast since 1918. It was in 1918 that we had major events occurring. Of such the Great War was winding down and the Spanish flu epidemic occurred. Both of those events are connected with millions of death’s in the earth. This year is the year of Jubilee for Israel. In addition the USA faces Russia, China, and North Korea as those who threaten the US over its policing of the world. The recent strikes in Syria by the Trump administration have pushed the status of major conflict to the forefront. In addition continued chaos and demonstrations in the US cities are ongoing. Terrorism has not gone away and with the recent terror strikes in the UK and in Sweden, it is clear; lawlessness is in full gear today.

The eclipse is a prophetic sign of the end of days, as it meets the criteria for signs in the heavens above. It also is connected with the signs of the sun and the moon. All of these are mentioned in scripture and when we see these signs it signals the end of days, time of the end, and the coming great Day of Judgment in the earth. Now while many of these events are some time off, it is also clear from this that it could indeed signal a great change in the earth along with some great event or catastrophe or even world war that is close on the horizon. With this being the year of Jubilee for Israel, it could definitely signal some change for Israel and those closely connected to Israel, like America [since we have this close viewing of the eclipse, the first such in almost 100 years]. In Israel there have been major signals of war this year and if so; it is being warned that it could mean lots of deaths. But, this could just be a sign in the heavens and not have such catastrophic event follow it. But the fact that we have such things follow these events, we need to be prepared.

Luk 21:34-36

(34) And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

(35) For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.

(36) Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

Scientists and others follow such events all the time and many do not see biblical prophecy connected to them. In addition, the connection of such events to human events is seen a mere coincidence. Now while eclipses happen regularly and nothing of extra-ordinary occurs, when something comes along that is a hundred year event; we sit up and take note. While this is a 99 year event, that is close enough. We look and watch, observing both the event, scripture, and those things occurring in the earth. All three this time agree that we are in perilous times and prophecy is warning us about all this and what we should be doing to prepare ourselves and our families. Therefore, take care; my friends. Watch and pray that you would be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass and to stand before the Son of man!

In Spades continues the band’s dark, complex relationship with the concept of love. But instead of the raw diatribes on the subject a younger Dulli delivered dripping with youthful confusion, regret and curiosity we are presented with a more mature exploration on the topic saturated with the experiences of a mature man who has seen and done it all.

This album builds on the sound from 2014’s Do To The Beast which is classic Afghan Whigs filtered through Dulli’s post Whig’s band The Twilight Singers. The personnel here is a mix of the two bands after all. Staples of the Whigs classic sound, crunchy guitars (Copernicus) and interesting leads (Arabian Heights) are married to important aspects of The Singers like keys and strings (The Spell). The sound is joyous sonic overload for longtime Dulli fans.

And from way down deep inside Like a wave I crashed on the Reason I Was there

Though it may not appeal to modern listening sensibilities, In Spades is an album, best experienced in full, consumed in one sitting with comfortable headphones and candlelight. That’s not to say the individual songs cannot be enjoyed on their own, the lead single Demon In Profile will satisfy when it comes up on shuffle, but its a much more complete experience when listened as a whole.

Light the candle Lock the door too Draw the circle I’ll fall into you

The brevity and sharpness of the opening track (Birdland) and the length and seriousness of the closing track (Into the Floor) clearly demonstrate that this is an album by bookending this collection of songs like a good novel or noir film. Dulli has never been concerned with short term gains and hit singles, instead focusing on the art giving his all to provide you with something to lose yourself in, to revisit and cherish.

At 36 minutes, In Spades is brief. Do not be fooled by the length of a typical punk album. The Whigs pack a lot in to those few minutes. In Spades is a dense album that will take several listens to fully unpack. The opening track (Birdland) itself is a challenge. At less than 3 minutes the song sets a mood with atmospheric orchestration; sharp, inaccessible strings and a beautiful melodic payoff with Dulli’s singing accompanied by sparse acoustic guitar. The closing track (Into The Floor) an epic payoff that aspires to be what Faded was to Black Love. And while it falls justthisshort of that song’s power, I look forward to seeing the band close their live set with it.

And are you gonna see the light Or are you gonna be the light? I want to free the light and lose control

Arabian Heights, Demon In Profile and Light as a Feather are the songs that will satisfy most Whigs fans as they sound like they could have come off any of the classic records, Black Love, Gentlemen or 1965. The Spell and I Got Lost would be comfortable on any of The Twilight Singers albums. Despite this perceived duality there is no struggle for the listener as Dulli’s smokey vocals and bassist John Curley’s signature sound ground this album firmly in Whigs cannon.

Say you’re coming for the rest of me Sounds good, I like what you’re doing Let me demonstrate And though I’ve said it before-I’m gonna be breaking your heart baby

One of the strengths of any Whigs album is the timeless classic rock sound the band are able to create. With few exceptions, one can listen to any of their records and assume it is a contemporary release or believe it was released in just about any modern decade of rock music. Toy Automatic for example has an almost “new wave” quality to it. The song would sound appropriate on many 80’s mixtape, but the rock guitar and Curley’s impressive bass work give it a contemporary sound. Of course this is all overlaid with jazzy sax, trombone and trumpet that give it a timeless sound, unbound from the typical constraints of popular music.

And I Wanna leave you Make me believe you Forget everything I’ve ever learned

The real star of the show of course is Dulli. One of rock’s greatest and underrated frontmen. A true showman, performer and lyricist. Dulli’s at his best when he gives his all. Fortunately that is all he does. While some cracks are showing in the master, he strains for some of the notes in The Spell for example, overall Dulli reminds fans why they have invested so completely in him. He lays himself bare with his lyrics. Sharing his desperation, experience, regret and rage with us while singing his heart out. He’s lived these songs and by listing to them you do as well.

When it burns And falls into the floor Feel it rise And come and get some more I’ll remember you always this way

Overall, In Spades is classic Afghan Whigs. Worthy of sitting alongside Gentleman and Black Love. And while its more aligned with 1965 and Do to the Beast in terms of sound and impact than those classics, this is an endlessly re-listenable album. Dulli and Curly are musical partners and soulmates; a perfect pair. Guitarists Dave Rosser and Jon Skibic are excellent compliments for Dulli’s own playing and songwriting and Patrick Keeler does an awesome job keeping time and partnering with Curley. The additional musicians add atmosphere to a deep and dense record that seems to play well beyond the 36 minutes in which it is constrained. If you are already in the Congregation, you get it and you know. If you are new to the band, grab a glass of whiskey, a pack of smokes, your favorite headphones and welcome to the club.
