Old 3D accelerators and slow CPUs (1997-1998)

Nearly every website focused on old 3D accelerators benchmarks them with too modern CPUs. Out of curiosity, I took a few cards and built a SuperSocket7 computer with 256MB of RAM and AGP, which is compatible with early Pentiums. I know that there were people with a 133-MHz Pentium combined with 3Dfx Voodoo 1 or 2 back in the late 90s so I started my benchmarking with this particular CPU. However, to my surprise, the early low-end cards like ATI Rage II+ and S3 Virge VX/GX couldn’t really help in any game in comparison with a software-renderer option. Not even in a resolution of 320x240. The Rage II+ was the worst. It generated less than a half of the frames per second than the CPU itself.

The situation was slightly better with ATI Rage Pro. It was not possible to have 30 or more frames per second on a 133-MHz CPU with this card, but some games were playable. If you really want to have a 3D accelerator with such a slow CPU, you should definitely go with 3Dfx Voodoo. A good reason is the 3D API called Glide because it requires significantly less CPU power than early Direct3D and it is supported in many old games. Direct3D was a horrible mess in the early days.

Although none of the early consumer 3D accelerators had a geometry unit (the thing that can transform a 3D world into a 2D projection on a screen), the better ones (like 3Dfx Voodoo, Matrox Millennium II, 3Dlabs Permedia2, ATI Rage Pro...) had at least a triangle-setup engine. Doing triangle setup in software means that a CPU has to calculate slopes for each edge of a triangle. This means slopes for both axes in the projection (X,Y), depth (Z), color (R, G, B), alpha/transparency (A) and texture coordinates (U,V). Take all of this and then multiply it by a thousand to setup the whole scene. That’s the reason why low-end cards struggled to deliver their performance on a slow CPU more than high-end cards. Anyway, even with 3Dfx Voodoo2, you will not be able to play many games from 1998+. The CPU is just too slow and they will run in single-digit fps.

Replacing the CPU with a 166-MHz Pentium MMX really helps. It allows games to run with twice as high fps but it doesn’t look like the MMX instructions or the higher clock are the reason. Pentium MMX CPUs has 32kB of L1 cache (instead of 16kB) and this can make a huge difference here. There is not a big difference in fps between 166 and 200-MHz Pentium MMX CPUs though. You would need to go with the Pentium II-class CPUs to explore the potential of early 3D accelerators.

The buyer advice is that the lowest reasonable computer for 3D accelerated gamming should have a 166-MHz Pentium MMX CPU and a 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics card. Everything below doesn’t make much sense.
