so we know Soap loves to go off roading, but is his 4runner a manual or automatic 😫

Unfortunately, it's automatic. Toyota stopped making the manual transmission 4Runner's back in 2000, if I remember correctly.

I believe they'll be bringing them back this year (2024, maybe) but with the 4 cylinder engine.

Not that I'm bashing the more streamlined power capacity, but my man ain't gonna be driving that.

He needs horse power. Torque. And proficient towing capacity for a midsized SUV.

Full blown 4Runner ramble under the cut.

This is why he went the '22 TRD Off Road. 4.0 liter, V6 engine that purrs like a kitten on the road and growls like a beast while tackling the trail.

I've already made a post about his desired tire of choice here. (I love throwing the pavlovian effect on the squad. It's so much fun)

He does have lift kit. Yet only added an extra inch to remain compatible with the KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. 4Runners are made to go off road, not much need for after-market additions when they're already almsot perfect)

Now you're probably going to ask if he has the snorkel. And the answer is, hell yes. Water won't stop this beast of vehicular engineering. It'll plow through it with ease, like the parting of the seas.

And I see him keeping the black trim and black on red TRD rims. He also went with the Nautical blue paint job because of course he did. Pair that with the full black out tint, and this is sexiest thing you've ever seen while out backpacking through the woods (besides the man sitting in the driver seat)

I could go on for hours about this man's vehicular baby (he calls her his breagha (Scots for pretty/beautiful)). But I'll leave you all with this.

it’s ep 4 of the eighth sense and i still don’t believe jaewon is in therapy.

i asked myself why? why, when it’s getting quite obvious that jaewon is in therapy, from the woman accusing him of just being here for the drugs and to jaewon stating his parents forced him to come here 10 years ago. he sits there on a couch for four as a silhouette. the water is clear and glowing behind him. she essentially tells him to spit it out for god’s sake, says he has depression, and jaewon tells her i’m getting sick of myself wearing a mask when I’m dealing with others.

(or a deeply personal piece about my experiences with being asian and the idea of therapy, all prompted by the privilege of getting to experience the eighth sense)

i’m first generation chinese canadian and queer. my sister has depression, had thoughts of suicide, all while i myself was being emotionally and verbally abused at work. it’s been 5 years but when i drive by a white toyota 4runner (because that’s the car they drove), i’m still gripped with fear. i can only stare straight ahead hoping to god it’s not them it’s not them it’s not. i want to drive the other way onto oncoming traffic

i told my mom then, that my sister needs help - a doctor, therapy, - call the goddamn pastor from church - anything.

she told me, what use is therapy going to do?

my mom was a registered nurse. when i was a kid, she used to bring me with her on her night shifts and i’d eat tuna croissant sandwiches with the seniors in front of the biggest television box i’ve ever seen in my life. cross legged on the floor because the po po’s and gong gong’s took all the chairs. she told me if old white ladies ask for kleenex and you give them toilet paper, they’ll be mad. it’s different here.

so it’s ep 4 of the eighth sense and i don’t believe therapy exists in the minds of asian people and culture

i took a new job. vowed not to make friends at work. clock in clock out. gave limited info when coworkers asked questions. smiled and giggled. i observed and mimicked behaviour that would let me fit in. i learned how to hug someone when they were upset (tight and long, soothe their backs with open palms) even though i didn’t want to hug anyone, let alone have anyone touch me anywhere that was soft

i was masking.

been masking. for a long time.

i fit in so well, everyone likes me. i’ve been told i’m the favourite by pretty much everyone. hell, i’ve had coworkers fighting over me, told i can do and say no wrong. i’m not trying to brag. i hate being the centre of attention. i steer conversation immediately to the other person so i don’t have to talk about myself too much. just enough to seem normal, to look human - to be liked.

(even as i’m writing this, there are too many words and paragraphs about me, why would anyone read this? y’all are here for the eighth sense but i’m going on like a celebrity writing their autobiography about their tragic childhood and how they were able to rise above - so, okay, i should start sprinkling in some actual t8s content analysis, for god’s sake)

jaewon says i want to free myself from human relationships

what happened to jaewon? we don’t know entirely yet. but everybody loves jaewon. the teacher will give him a good mark because he likes jaewon. everybody in class wants him to be their project partner and everybody’s missed him since he’s been away in the army please hang out with us jaewon let’s go drinking jaewon you better show up jaewon or it would be a shame, jaewon you are so likeable loveable cool lucky don’t worry about jaewon he’s got everything going on for him

then he meets jihyun and i think jaewon has a hard time finding the right mask to put on to deal with the freshman. and he slips a lot. when he starts to talk about his brother, after eunji shows up because of taehyung’s scheming, when jihyun repeatedly corrects him that it’s jaewon that wants to be friends - not him. and finally when he kisses jihyun

he’s having such a hard time and he slips up so bad, that the next safest option is to mask right back up

oh jaewon was drunk he has a habit of kissing and yeah he’ll join them after he helps yoon won wrap things up he’s the new best friend so let’s have a meal together with jihyun and his roommate next time

3 years into my new job, someone returns to the company and we become friends, on a soulmate level. i think i was in love with her - i definitely had a crush on her. but anyways, somehow i see her and i was suddenly all sorts of things because of her. i start to look forward to work. i add my coworkers on facebook and ig. we go to parties with our bosses and a few of us go on a couple of road trips even though the pandemic is blazing in the background

she saw me, even when i didn’t want to be seen. i remember getting a particularly anxiety-inducing email from my previous job. i’m in the staff room sitting quietly, staring at my feet. i try to breathe.

i’m alone for the whole of it but i emerge from the room again. ready to leave for the day and somehow, my friend sees me. asks me what’s wrong?

how did she know? i didn’t cry. i looked in the mirror before i came out. i didn’t even say anything to her. but i tell her, quietly at first and then easily and then finally with so much - so. much. honesty.

she tells me i get it. of course you feel that way. why wouldn’t you feel that way? it’s completely understandable. i know you.

we hug. it’s one of the best hugs i’ve ever received.

she leaves for another job. i try to go on, all open and soft parts exposed. but little by little, i go back into my shell.

why would i want to show the entirety of myself? all the bits of me are all the ways i can embarrass myself, expose myself, show myself to people who will take what i show and twist and move it all in a way that becomes unrecognizable and uncontrollable

so i mask

but it’s goddamn tiring and exhausting. jaewon is exhausted. you see it in his eyes as he stares off out into nowhere when jihyun tells him his name. when they’re sitting in the train, and he’s smiling at jihyun at first and then jihyun’s smile falls open, and we see jaewon’s expression: there’s a downward movement to his lips. it’s so miniscule. maybe i’m imagining it

but that’s the moment i think jihyun sees when he tells aeri he ran into jaewon sunbae yesterday, and he didn’t look okay.

what was i talking about? oh yes, therapy and being asian and how disconnected that is to me. nobody asian goes to therapy. i can hear all the aunties and my popo saying sometimes doctors are wrong and medicine isn’t going to help. my grandma didn’t believe my grandpa had dementia and alzheimer’s even to the last minute of his death and past it. she said he was annoying and stupid when he forgot where he put his ring or when he would leave the stove on until a hole burnt through the pot.

in the farewell, a story about a chinese family that lied to their aging matriarch that she didn’t have terminal lung cancer. all of them flew back to china for a rushed and premature marriage, used as an excuse to go tearily say goodbye to their soon-to-be dead grandma/mom/mother in law, etc. the juxtaposition of them celebrating a happy marriage while crying on stage to her about her for her as she claps with happiness and pride, but also with confusion, is funny. they never tell her. and she miraculously is cured of cancer. it’s like she never had it. they lied to her because they wanted her to be happy. be happy so she wouldn’t die.

so what good will medicine, let alone, therapy do? just be happy. easy, right?

i hope jaewon continues to open up. i hope he finds that soulmate of his, maybe in jihyun, maybe in himself. i know opening up and unmasking is scary. but also masking is so uncomfortable that i want to crawl out of my skin. it’s alienating and lonely.

even writing all of this out, i still don’t think jaewon is in actual therapy. i’ve never seen it personally in asian media. so i think it’s so sad that when i’m being given a beautiful example of a korean person in korea going to therapy or whatever type of appointment relationship agreement this is where jaewon gets asked what’s bothering him and he answers truthfully and almost painlessly. like he’s been doing this for 10 years.

and i don’t believe it. it’s so fucked up that i don’t believe it. i keep thinking when will the rug be pulled out from under me? surely there’s no such thing as an asian person going to therapy. fuck, evelyn travelled through the multiverse and there’s not one of her in therapy

but it’s right there in front of my own eyes: jaewon getting counselled and advised, she has a notebook, an aquarium to look at when you’re nervous, big round metal balls to stare right back at you when you need a distraction and it’s been 10 years. i watched it all with the same eyes that saw my parents fight and punch holes in the wall before going to couple retreats at church and coming back stronger than ever. the last time i saw them fight, i was in high school. even as my sister finally spoke to her doctor and she saw a therapist, then a psychiatrist and now she’s on medication and she’s doing better. i’m not afraid she’s going to hurt herself anymore. my soulmate sees a counsellor and messages me randomly and it’s so eerily weird when she knows i’m struggling even when we’re a mountain apart

it’s all in front of me. but i don't believe it.

Big changes pt. 4

Matt couldn't help but look at himself in the mirror, still stunned at how he had grown in the last few hours. He turned and looked at Jon who now was a literal giant, standing over 10 feet tall. they both where happy Jon more or less happy with the size of his feet. Jon had always wanted to have big feet. now unsure if he could ever buy regular shoes again he just stared at them. " you ready big guy?" Matt asked looking up at him. " it'll be tight but yup I am" Jon said before kissing Matt on the lips. Jon was right it was tight in the 4Runner Jon's body almost too big to fit in the front seat. Matt now had to move the driver seat all the back for him to fit behind the wheel. Jon once again placed his massive hand on Matt's thigh as they drove. finally arriving at the gym they pulled them selves out of the car. entering the gym all eyes where on them. Matt now almost 7 feet tall and Jon passed th 10 foot mark they were the biggest guys in the gym. " I hope Zack Showa up he always made fun of me for being short." Matt said to Jon as they headed towards the locker room. the sauna was empty so the two of them went in. it wasn't long before Matt had Jons dick in his mouth blowing him before the work out. his belly full but nowhere as it was back at the apartment. they went to the squat racks Matt moving the bar up so he could get in the right position. as he loaded the weights 4 ,45 plates each side he heard Zacks voice in the distance. Matt knew Zack was still taller than him standing at 7'2 it was only a few inches but Matt wanted to be bigger than him. putting his headphones and drawing him out he began to lift the weight, it was easy he thought to himself after 5 reps he added another plate to each side. grunting as the added weight gave him a challenge. he was to focussed on the lift to realize he was growing. Jon watched Matt in disbelief he was growing before his very eyes. as Matt added more weight he was oblivious to the fact he had grown 6 inches since the start of his workout. he racked the weight after his final set 6 played on each side. he had grown to a massive 7'10". still unaware of his growth he walked away bumping in to Zack. he looked down and laugh as he now towered over Zack. "sauna now " he commanded Jon, Matt blew him again before returning to gym floor. as he continued to lift weight Matt continued to grow reaching a massive 9'6". before leaving Matt walked over to Zack who was bench pressing he had a good amount weight on the 4 plates each side. Matt snatche the bar from his hand and started curling it. his biceps exploding in size. Zack stood up in disbelief as a now giant Matt put the bar down and laughed at the smaller man. laughing while him and Jon exit the gym.

the ride home was tight for the 2 massive guys. as they ducked into the now doll sized apartment Jon couldn't help himself as he ripped the shorts off of Matt and bean to suck his dick. Matt easily picking Jon up and flipping him around to start sucking him off as he made his way to the bedroom. "Matt your massive!" Jon shouted waking Matt up...." what are you talking about?" while they slept both of them had grown but Matt had passed Jon in all areas. Matt looked around standing up and smashing through the ceiling. now 15 feet tall and looking down at Jon "fuck.... hey shortie" he joked now a foot taller than Jon. they crawled through the apartment reaching the back door and went outside now able to stand up and see how massive they had become. Matt looking down at Jon and smiling as he bounced his pecs. "how's the view short stuff?" Matt said cockily "it's amazing" Jon replied.

Rescue us from the worst birthday!

My wife, Terana ( @im-a-blackstar ), and I --two humble queers-- set out to have a nice vacation for our birthdays and 3 year anniversary. We decided to go to Florida to go to Halloween Horror Nights, a horror convention, and visit my mother (who has been having a rough time the last few years). All did not go well and we need help.

The brakes went out on our car due to ABS unit failure ($2070)

My mother’s car’s timing belt broke on the highway ($500+)

My mother’s car was towed and impounded ($500+)

We need to buy my mom a new car ($1500)

We had to get an emergency flight home ($600)

We need to fly back to FL to pick up our car and drive home ($300)

Unrelated and not included in total: Our heating fuel and car insurance bills are due ($1500)

Keep reading for the full, ridiculous story of how my birthday went.

Our trip started out lovely! We were staying in a nice resort in Orlando, we went to see a Gorillaz concert, and the convention was fun! Then, on my birthday, we drove down to Melbourne, FL to visit my mother and have dinner with some of my old friends. (Yay, more good times!)

On the way back to my mother’s house from dinner, the brakes gave out on my 4Runner. (Boo. Super bad times!) I was able to coast it into a gas station parking lot and we requested a tow through AAA. After 3 hours of waiting and calling repeatedly, it became clear there were no tow companies open at that hour of the night (I had so many slurpees at that 7-11 where we waited). We decided to leave the car and come back in the morning. To save us the cost of an uber, my mom agreed to come pick us up and take us to her house just 20mins away.

On the way to my mother’s house, just 1 mile from her exit, her car stopped getting gas. It started slowing down and we pulled off on the side of the highway where it gave out completely and would not start again. We called a friend and got a ride the rest of the way to the house. It was officially a very shitty night.

In the morning, we took an uber back to the 7-11 to get our car. We got a tow from AAA to a mechanic my mother uses. The mechanic told us the ABS unit had gone out and repairs would be $2k and take a week to do. Super. We had to be back home in 4 days for work and because our dog sitter would be leaving. Mild panic attacks ensued.

We went back to my mom’s house and waited for a friend to get off work so we wouldn’t have to guide an uber driver to a random spot on the side of the highway. We drove out to her car and called her roadside assistance. We were then informed (wait for it) that no tow trucks were available after 5pm. We took a picture of the sticker highway patrol had put on her car saying she had 48hrs to remove the car, then went back to her house.

In the morning, we got a very expensive uber back to our hotel ($100, but if we didn’t get back that morning for a timeshare pitch, they would have doubled the cost of our room). While we listened to a sales pitch we couldn’t afford and didn’t want, my mom got another ride to her car. Or tried. When she got there, the car was gone and had been taken to impound.

Mom called to argue that the sticker said she had another day to move it, and after being transferred through several people, she was told the fine print said if she was on a “low access highway” (I still don’t know what this means) she only had 6hrs to move (with the lack of tow companies and time of night we stopped, this would have been literally impossible). Now she was stuck with a $400 cost to get the car out of impound.

Meanwhile, Terana and I still needed to get home! We put out a call for help and gathered some funds. We decided to try and rent a car since we had so much luggage. We checked apps and called around most of the day and found out that no car lots in the area would rent a car to go out of state. We would have to take a plane. (You have no idea how much I hate flying.)

The cheapest way to get a flight home was going to require we also add a night to our hotel stay. Altogether this was over $600, but still cheaper than an earlier flight with our amount of baggage. Things continued to suck.

We put out a call for help on our Facebook pages and we were able to get enough money for the hotel stay, the flight, and a portion of the repair fees. (We are very lucky to have good friends!) We made it home in time for work and to relieve our dog sitter.

Now, however, we still need to get back to Florida and get the repaired 4runner from the shop and drive it back to NC. My mother has had her car inspected and found the timing chain went out. No clue what other damage it may have done. Impound fees have now mounted to over $500 and repairs will be a $500 minimum. Her car only cost $1000. She plans to leave the car in impound, but they still want $300 (at least) if she abandons it and she will need another car. My mother lives on social security and I have to send her around $500 a month just to cover her basic bills... I will have to help buy her a car.

Any help at all is appreciated and I thank you if you even just managed to read all of this. I am in constant panic mode right now and don’t know how we’re going to make it through this. It is already an expensive time of year when we need to pay $1000 for heating fuel for the year and $500 for car insurance.

What a difference 40 years makes juxtaposition of Toyota 4Runner, 1983 & Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary, 2023. To celebrate 4 decades of their pick-up/SUV Toyota have created a special edition for the 2023 model year. The name "4Runner" was created by a copywriter named Robert Nathan who was working for the advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi. It was a play on the term "forerunner," as the pick-up based SUV was the first of its type for Toyota. It subsequently moved platforms to be based on the Land Cruiser Prado.

I felt off all day and I'm not sure why. Did my normal Tuesday errands before shift. Tried for a while to fix a mechanical problem on the old 4runner then gave up. Meal prepped. Walked 4 miles. Went to the climbing gym. And still can't shake whatever this is.

My mom just officially gave me her 1998 4runner that I've been driving for a few months and it is

1. My dream car

2. Only a few months younger than me

3. Like 10 months older than my partner

4. A beautiful green color

I am so fucking happy <3. When I was 2 I chose this car out of a used car lot and my parents bought it, and now it's mine. Feels right. Feels loved and loving. I love you, Forest.

“So, you and Gray will be heading back home to Cali for the summer?” Lucy questioned her friend Natsu. The University of Hawaii at Hilo just finished their spring semester, and all the dormies needed to vacate soon.

“Yeah, our lease is up at the end of the month.”

Lucy pursed her lips briefly. “In that case, I was wondering if you guys would like to come with Levy and I to my family’s beach house in Waikoloa?” She questioned. It had become their tradition to go after school finished for two weeks. “We’ll be back before you leave.”

“I’ll check with Gray, but I think he’ll say okay. So, just the four of us?”

“Yup. Gajeel,” Levy’s longtime boyfriend, “has to work so he can’t come.”

“Sounds like a plan!”

One week later, the four friends piled into Lucy’s Toyota 4Runner and headed out to Waikoloa. The quickest route was a 1-1/2 hour drive on the Daniel K. Inouye highway. A scenic route that cut between two of the island’s volcanoes, Mauna (mountain) Kea and Mauna Loa. Flanked by ancient ohia forests and lava flows on the eastern side, and miles of open fields on the west. You can even see rising across the ocean, mount Haleakala on the island of Maui on a clear day.

They arrived in Waikoloa’s Anaeho’omalu area nestled along the azure blue Pacific Ocean. A developed piece of land surrounded by crumbling ancient lava flows and sparse grass lands— a very dry environment. Here hotels like the Hilton and Marriott had built along side condos like the one Lucy’s family owned.

“Very nice,” Natsu remarked as he got out of the vehicle. “How much does a place like this cost?”

“I’m not sure,” Lucy responded. “All I know is they bought this place a couple years after I was born.” Her mom had heard about it’s sale while working at her realty company.

He chuckled, “so, out of our price range, got it.”

“Yeah,” she giggled too.

Lucy lead the group into the home and parceled out the rooms. It was a three bedroom condo, so she and Levy got one room each while the two boys had to share one. But they were fairly large and comfortable, plus Natsu and Gray were already used to sharing a dorm. Then after a quick tour of the place, they head out for supplies at the nearest store.

Foodland farms market was located in a shopping center a few miles away near the Mauna Lani resort. Since this was the boys first time there, the group walked around the shopping center, window shopping really. It was just a mix of clothing stores and restaurants.

“Can you believe there used to be a 4-D theater here?” Lucy explained. “They only played really short films, but it was the first time I experienced 4-D.”

“Yeah I saw a scene from that movie Journey to the Center of the Earth here,” Levy added. “That scene where they’re on the boat and flying fish we’re jumping all over, they spritzed us with water!”

Everyone laughed.

“At least you got to try a 4-D, I haven’t seen one yet,” Natsu griped.

“Well one day while here, we can check out the luxury cinemas at Queen’s marketplace.” Lucy offered Natsu with a light blush to her cheeks. “I haven’t been there yet.”

“Like a date? I’m game,” he teased pulling a deeper flush from Lucy.

“When you two are done flirting, meet us at the market,” Levy teased before pulling Gray away from the now flustered pair.

After a couple seconds, Natsu and Lucy gained their composure and followed. The group shopped for food to last a few days along with drinks and snacks. It was a decent haul leaving them with arms full of groceries.

On the way back to the car, Natsu stopped Lucy briefly. “I just wanted to say thanks again for inviting us. I think this is gonna be the best vacation I ever had.”

“Aww,” Lucy blushed, “I think so too.”
