just realized what my overarching pet peeve with the triple A visual arms race is - it's the god damn adaptive resolution. it's this umbrella telltale scam that contains all the snake oil we've been slowly fed and gives away the entire false equivalence of trying to one-up the competition by feature bloat on hardware that just doesn't handle it. games are so rammed up the wazoo with ray tracing and global illumination sims and trillion polygon models with performance modes and SSDs sweating for blazing fast speeds that everything just "secretly" runs at upscaled 900p now. and nothing is crisp or legible and anti aliasing is being retooled as a further smokescreen for it and that is our next generation playstation experience. it slowly crept up in the prev gen and absolutely exploded with this gen's idiotic ambitions and we all just took it and now every game looks like fucking mush. I can't believe the scam that's being run here. how do we not care about this trade-off?? seven-year dev cycle games with more polish than a chrome teapot roll out with LOD pop-in on a hero character's hair that dissolves into grain noise when you jerk the camera too much.

I've been exclusively console gaming for the past decade and just happened to need a powerful laptop for work this year - where I've now replayed some of my multiplatform faves. at like low-to-medium settings but with dynamic resolution forced the fuck off and all the masturbatory nonsense switched off and it is an incomparably better experience, and yes, I mean visually - geometry and shape language are legible, art direction is no longer hidden behind a screen of upscaled pixels and beholden to careful resource allocation for set pieces, and it all looks so utterly fine with the reflections and lighting being baked-in instead of mathematically simulated. I don't want to name names and start slinging shit at developers here, it's all a top-down industry issue obviously, but man. such dung being shoveled onto us for seventy dollars and they don't even give you the courtesy to make it legible at 1080p - a small desk computer screen. for fuck's sake. unreal engine 3 games looked fine. what is going on here

at the end of the day the steam deck is dope as fuck but it's just too cumbersome for me to use handheld often. ergonomically it's comfortable for my hands but holding it fatigues my problematic ass arms. and it's just too big for me to practically take anywhere. it's pretty much a docked console for me that i use to run my steam indie games and emulators on my tv. which is kind of a hassle due to it's nature of defaulting to 720p most of the time and needing to manually enable 1080p per game.. all in all it's kind of just an annoying device to use for me lol. but i do really love it at the same time

you're not bothering and none of this is inappropriate, you're more than welcome in my inbox! as for your questions, let's see what i can do.

1) tutorials — i've been doing this for long enough that i don't really have much to recommend here, the only tutorials i use nowadays are all about specific things and not how to make gifs as a whole. that being said i've linked this one before, i personally do some things differently but it's a very good tutorial, well-received by gifmakers who are just starting and well written, from what i've skimmed through.

another good post to look through is this one, not a gifmaking tutorial per se but it goes into sizes, sharpening, and how to get neat & clear gifs. two of the main points are A) while you can get away with making gifs out of a 720p quality video, 1080p is what is usually recommended. you could use 4k as well, but a 1080p video is usually easier to find, will take less space in your storage, and will give you really good results already. no need for overkill <3 as for B) size matters here on tumblr dot com, mostly width. the op of the post linked in this paragraph has included a nice graphic for the size limits for gifs, you can refer to it as you make your gifs so that whatever you make won't turn out pixelated once you upload it to tumblr.

2) software — you mentioned app, if by app you mean mobile stuff then i'm sorry, i can't help you! i've never made gifs through mobile and i wouldn't even know which direction to point towards for you to find more information. as for computers, if you mean programs then these are what i use to make my gifs: potplayer (for taking screencaps) and photoshop cc 2020 (for making the actual gifs, this is the post i used but here's one with more links)

now i'd like to mention something my grandma always used to say: no one is born learned. you're not stupid just because it's taking you a while to do something, learning is a process and everyone has their own pace. i've been making gifs for a decade now and i know there are things i could do better! i'm also still learning, i make plenty of "shit" gifs before stumbling my way to something i am okay with posting, and sometimes i'm really proud of what i've made and other times i think it's just "good enough". i understand feeling disheartened but please do not feel stupid about any of this!

3) tips — we've mentioned video quality, sharpening, and sizing. what else, what else. personally i would start simple (and i did, way back when, and still do!! most of my gifs are quite simple). so: cropping/resizing + coloring + sharpening. it'll help get the basics down and then you'll have a good foundation for everything else you might want to learn. i mentioned in another ask, almost two years ago now lmao, that i used to download other people's free psds (that is, pre-made settings and layers to color your gifs) and instead of using them i would open them up and pick them apart to see how people were coloring things, which layers they used, in which order, stuff like that.

remember: there is no right or wrong to do this! you could ask ten different people how they make their gifs, and their preferences for any specific part of the process, and you'd get ten different answers. if you find a tutorial and don't vibe with it, throw that aside and look for another. pick and choose, find what works for you and what doesn't! and that means do not be afraid to experiment and try things out.

also, don't like photoshop? no problem! i started with gimp, now personally i wouldn't recommend it over ps but it's a good program, it taught me a lot, and there's really nothing to hate about it. it might have less functions than ps though, and already a decade ago there weren't that many tutorials/resources for it.

don't like photoshop AND don't want to download a program? try photopea, i haven't used it but it works directly from your browser and it should do everything photoshop does!

How do you make your gifs?

i have photoshop 2020 and a mac so i have to use MPlayer OSX Extended to screencap because that seems to be the only screencapping program that works on a mac (or at least for me). some times i have to use VLC player to clip scenes. i've screen recorded some too, but sorry to mr. jackson-cohen i will not be screen recording mr. selfridge ever again because that was a complete pain in the ass and i'll just wait until i can find a HQ download of it. so, yeah, just make sure every movie or show you use is 1080p (or 720p if you have to) so it looks as crisp as can be.

here's my sharpening settings:

my save for web settings: ( sometimes i change it to ADAPTIVE DIFFUSION )

and here's some links that have helped me in the past with making gifs: one, two, three. i make sure to set my gifs at 0.05 speed (some times 0.06 if it looks like it's going too fast) because anything higher than that starts looking like the gif is going in stop motion.

i hope this helps answer your question because i'm bad at explaining things! gif making is really just trial and error until you like what you see. as for coloring, i literally just go with vibes until i like how it looks, just be careful not to whitewash actors of color. people have premade psds for certain shows and movies or base psds that you can search for on itsphotoshop or completeresources. i think they have a whole bunch of links to premade psds and "actions" you can use in photoshop to make gif making easier if you're just starting out.

no fr... i did develop a weird bodily reaction to alcohol at some point (likely due to weight gain? idk) where my hangovers suddenly went from like nonexistent to Absolutely Deadly and yet i kept drinking all alone in my apartment despite that and despite it not being fun and my being freaked out every time that i would say stupid shit to people (and like being bad weed high level of paranoid about my tipsy behavior, like, having one or two coke&vodkas and feeling nothing and still being like oh god i have to make sure 50 times i said "hi" to my friend and not "hi penis bootyhole rimming ass boobs clitoris pussy analingus cunnilingus cock cock sex 720p" levels of insanity). and yet i kept drinking and being broke bc i spent money on liquor and being miserable and barfy all the time and being mad with myself for spending a chunk of each day being to some degree out of it. like it rly seemed like a fixed miserable part of my life. the embarrassment was the worst part i think. but i had to because i needed the numbness and the forgetting stuff so bad. idk like it was hard! and i had been insistently emphatically downplaying it SO hard to everyone and so it felt like i had no one to talk to bc then id have to come at them with the "yeah sorry its been a lot worse than i was making it seem" and that always feels bad

until one day i was like "i dont think i want to do this anymore. i think this is stupid. i think i have been causing myself to have a terrible time on purpose. i want to do better, actually" and like to be fair that came after i cut back on drinking slowly to some degree which definitely helped but yeah i just stopped. i was just like no i dont wanna. i still occasionally had a lil apperol spritz when i visited moms place because she offered, but that stopped completely when i got on venla&mirta which you should not be drinking on. i just stopped and the meds definitely helped me stay away from relapsing so thats good
