John Mayer Divulges Who His Song Your Body Is a Wonderland Is Actually About

John Mayer has responded (again) to one of his career's biggest questions: what was his hit song "Your Body Is a Wonderland" really about? The musician revealed the answer to host Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast's first-ever holiday special.

"That was about my first girlfriend," Mayer, 45, admitted to Cooper. "That was about the feeling, which I think was already sort of nostalgic," he said. "I was 21 when I wrote that song, and I was nostalgic for being 16."

"Your Body Is a Wonderland" was the second major single released from Mayer's 2001 debut album, titled Room for Squares. It was an instant hit, winning him the best male pop vocal performance Grammy the following year and spurring fans to guess who the song was about. Since the singer was dating Jennifer Love Hewitt at the time, many assumed the actress was the inspiration behind the tune.

"That's one of those things where people just sort of formed that idea," the "New Light" singer said of the assumptions. "It gets reinforced over the years…" "I had never met a celebrity when I wrote that song."

The guitarist also talked about his songwriting process and what truly inspires him, saying he doesn't write "for people or about people." Mayer explained further: "I might use a relationship that inspires me to write something. So yeah, even if I was writing a song because of someone, it's like, that goes away, and I'm left with the song.

The singer-songwriter revisited the topic of his high school love in his 2013 song "Dear Marie," asking, "Dear Marie, tell me what it was I used to be." Remember me?" I'm the boy you used to like when we were 15; now I'm curious what you think about me when you see me in a magazine… Dear Marie, tell me: do you still believe in me? "I've got my dream, but you've got yourself a family."

And though the singer did tell Cooper what his infamous song was about, it's not something Mayer will be doing regularly moving forward. "I don't like telling anyone that a song is about somebody because most of the time it's not," he said. "And it takes people away from themselves because they're just visualizing who I'm writing about."

The drama of the visuals are just priceless—a girl covered in blood, with only the whites of her eyes visible, is a forever favorite,” says Miesmer. “To a certain extent, we all feel like final girls these days, always narrowly escaping some chainsaw-wielding, apocalypse-grade monster. This beat-up, busted, mud-stained spirit of the collection reflects this feeling of always outrunning the devil.”

The Masked Singer Season 3 Episode 7: Last But Not Least, Let’s Meet Group C (Kickoffs Commentary and Guesses)

Hello fellow Masked Singer lovers! Welcome (or welcome back) to my commentary and guesses for the Masked Singer. Last night, we meet the last group of 6 masks for the season, Group C. The group consists of the Night Angel, Bear, T-Rex, Rhino, Astronaut, and Swan. 

Evaluating the whole group, like I did with Group B, this is the most bizarre group of masks ever, like wow. That reveal was absolutely insane, so let’s just get right into it... 

As you know, this is a **SPOILER ALERT**, avert your eyes now if you don’t want to know what happens during this episode. This is a disclaimer, don’t say I never warned you.

Ok so the first Group C mask to go home was: 

*DRUMROLL PLEASE* 

THE BEAR 

Alright, so I would be lying if I said I didn’t see this coming. She was alright, I was between her and the T-Rex for the elimination with my money going to the T-Rex but whatever she wasn’t the best vocally out of the group at all. Having said that, I would never ever in a million gazillion years ever would have guessed correctly who she was... I am not going to lie the weirdest thing I have seen on this show was this person singing Baby Got Back. 

And the person that made me laugh out of shock and was revealed to be the Bear is... 

SARAH FREAKING PALIN (and I thought Tony Hawk was shocking... ya I am still shook at how bizarre this is... u think I am lying? Look at the picture...yup that is Nick Cannon twerking, I said bizarre and I didn’t joke) 

Ok her performance was not what I expected from former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee... heck, I never thought a politician would be on the Masked Singer. Not getting into politics, because I really hate politics with a burning passion, but wow I never would’ve thought a republican would be on the show. AND HER SINGING BABY GOT BACK?! Wtf, and she freaking knew all of the words!! Like, I am impressed not gonna lie. People have been hating her on the internet but kudos to her for going for it and yup it’s weird but she went for it and wasn't scared to be judged. I respect that, you go Sarah Pailin, you rap about big butts. 

Anyways, looking back at the clues, it makes sense: 

Ice Skates= she always talks about how she is a hockey mom

As and Ks playing cards= AK= Alaska Abbreviation 

Calendar with “live”written under Saturday= SNL = Tina Fey impersonating her on SNL

At the start of the show, Nick said that there are 2 people who were voted Time’s Most Influential People = she was one of them 

Alright, so shock aside, let’s talk about the remaining contestants going to the playoffs: 

1. The Night Angel 

Performance: I really enjoyed the Night Angel’s performance even though her mask is so creepy and kind of hard to look at. However, she is one of the strongest, if not the strongest, singer in this group. Her voice is fantastic and I love her tone. You can tell she’s been doing this for a while. I do know exactly who this is, my guess being: 

KANDI BURRUS (Real Housewives of Atlanta) 

The clues make a lot of sense to my guess: 

Doors with “4,” “5,” and “6″ = She sang a song called “4,5,6″

Group of grandmas= has a restaurant called “The Old Lady Gang” 

Men in duck bills= she wrote “bills, bills, bills” for Destiny’s Child 

2. The Astronaut 

Performance: Ok, so yes I get it he was pretty shaky but he was nervous give him a break. I don’t care though because he is my favorite and I love him so much. I really want him to go far in the competition because I know how he sings and he is fantastic. Having said that, from the moment I heard his voice, I was convinced that he is: 

HUNTER HAYES 

Ok, so the Internet agrees with me based on voice, but the clues also correlate:

“if you want something enough”= one of his most popular songs is Wanted

“This might sound crazy”= another popular song, I want crazy 

“Code Blue”= releasing a 3-part album called Wild Blue 

Skeleton Foot= duet with Victoria Justice 2011 version of Footloose soundtrack 

Beginning of show, Nick also said that one of the masks won a Guinness World Record, which Hunter did for the most city performances in 24 hours

3. T-Rex 

Performance: Ok, this is not my favorite performer I am not going to lie, but she got so much energy wow. She isn’t a singer like not at all, but she is a great dancer and capped full of energy. I burned calories with her, damn. There is only one person who is this energetic and bonkers... and I am so happy that finally a YouTuber is on the show, so my guess is: 

JOJO SIWA 

Her voice and energy gave it away to me, but also her clues are so obvious: 

“Put into a magical world where I was one of dozens talented creatures pirouetting the land” = reference to Dance Moms where she appeared for 2 seasons 

Drawing with North and West= famous playdate with Kim Kardashian’s daughter North West 

Bow and arrow= her line of bows and the fact that she always wears them in her hair

A balloon with the shape of a U with white, blue, and pink stars= the star colors are reminiscent of what she wears/her branding and the U could mean YouTube, since her channel is so popular (she is a YouTuber after all) 

The other person who was Time’s most influential person was Jojo, last year being most influential on the internet. 

4. Rhino 

Performance: Ok, I love Rhino. He is such an unexpected favorite for me. I love his voice, he is such an amazing vocalist. Wow, he is amazing. The thing is I feel the same way I did at first with the banana. Is he a country singer or is he an athlete? I really cannot tell. Some people are saying it’s Tim McGraw. Others are saying it’s an athlete and I also heard some guy from Lady Antebellum at one point. I have no idea who he can be.

The clues were pretty confusing:

5. Swan 

Performance: I really liked Swan’s performance, she is pretty awesome. I’ll admit she had a shaky start but she’s pretty good. Her voice isn’t as strong and powerful as Rhino, Night Angel, and Astronaut, but that doesn’t make her any less amazing. Also, she has the costume I would want to have if I were on the Masked Singer. Based on the voice, I think she is: 

JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT

It makes sense because of the clues: 

Ghost= she starred on the show Ghost Whisperer 

Heart pool floatie= “Love” her middle name 

Megaphone= starred in horror movie in 90s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” where her character is screaming 

She is on 911, a crime show on Fox, which is the same network as The Masked Singer.

The Masked Singer: S3, E8 Running Commentary

Well, the one bright side of this coronavirus pandemic is that we don’t have to worry about The Masked Singer being interrupted...the season has already been taped!

As always, no spoilers.

Astronaut 👨‍🚀: Was famous when he was younger. Just the voice alone has me convinced that this is Hunter Hayes, who was a child singer and then had a huge crossover hit in his early 20s with “Wanted”.

Night Angel 👼: Some have said that this might be Kandi Burruss, who was a prolific songwriter in the 1990s and was part of an R&B girl group called Xscape. She’s currently a cast member on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, which fits with the sweet tea clue. But my original guess of Monica is also from Atlanta. So, I’m going between Kandi Burruss and Monica. (My spelling on Kandi’s last name may be a little off. I don’t watch any of the Real Housewives shows.)

T-Rex 🦖: Rainbows, might like tennis? She’s a dancer with a lot of energy. But I also saw a lot of rainbows and bright colors in her clue package. I can think of one celebrity with that much energy and all those bright colors. I don’t know much about her, but I’m thinking this could be Jojo Siwa.

Swan 🦢: Self-made. I’m still thinking that this is Jennifer Love Hewitt, but I remember her voice sounding better than it does tonight. I couldn’t get much else from her clue package. Mila Kunis and Kristen Stewart are also good guesses.

Rhino 🦏: Lives in Tennessee, sings, and the large diamond seems to suggest baseball diamond. I know Tim Tebow just got married back in January, but I’m not entirely convinced it’s him...the singing voice doesn’t seem to match Tebow’s speaking voice. My guess is gonna be a bit out of left field, but I think this could be former Major League Baseball pitcher Barry Zito, who is a known singer.

I didn’t bother anybody. Because I know now that by default, most people aren’t into me. I don’t even try and I actually like that now.”

John Mayer has insisted he’s actually only slept with six people – despite his previous boast that he has bedded around 500.

The 41-year-old singer, who counts Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson among his famous exes, recently opened up about his busy sex life in a chat for the unofficial Instagram Live show, Current Mood.

Asked by Cazzie to indicate just how many women have shared his bed, John was told to “blink twice if you have slept with over 800 people” or “blink once if you have slept with over 500 people”. Both times, the Your Body is a Wonderland singer pointedly stared straight into the camera, before telling the host his body count is a “soft 500”.

The remark caused a storm on social media, and led to John recalculating the figure – revealing the results on another episode of Current Mood on Sunday.

“I made reference to being a sub-500 guy and you guys, I know, listen, it’s a tough world out there and you want people to like you. And I try to do it too,” he explained. “But I feel like people might like you more if you would just go along with what the truth is… I also just wanna say that I thought about it over the week and I actually went back over my entire dating history and… my number is six. So I just wanted you to know that. That my number is six.”

As well as Jennifer and Jessica, John has enjoyed relationships with stars such as Taylor Swift, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Katy Perry.

He’s also reported to have had flings with Renee Zellweger, Kim Kardashian, Minka Kelly, Mandy Moore, Cameron Diaz and Rashida Jones.

John Mayer Is Bummed That Jennifer Lawrence Won't Date Him

Dating John Mayer used to come with the near-promise of the singer writing a song about you and later revealing lurid details about your skills in bed. Which is probably why a lot of image-conscious celebrities are hesitant to date the 40-year-old now. 

While they won’t go out with him, Mayer said that A-listers will hang out with him ― but only if his BFF Andy Cohen is around. 

“You have a lot of friends who, without you, would want nothing to do with me and I find that exciting,” Mayer said on an episode of “Watch What Happens Live” that aired over the weekend. “You’re friends with Jennifer Lawrence, who just, she doesn’t wanna have anything to do with me. I don’t have the greatest track record when it comes to celebrity relationships.” 

“It’s amazing to watch your friends humor me on a friend level but also keep a fair distance from me,” he said, as Cohen laughed. “Because if you are someone who cares about your image… dating John Mayer, at this point, is just conceptually sort of a no-no.” 

The star added one last self-deprecating jab: “So it’s really fun to get to hang out with your A-list star friends who otherwise would be highly uncomfortable sitting around me.” 

Mayer has dated Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jennifer Aniston, Katy Perry and Renee Zellweger over the years. 

But the singer famously revealed a little too much about his celebrity exes, speaking about his sex life with Simpson in a 2010 Playboy interview that will live in infamy.  

“Sexually it was crazy,” he said of his and Simpson’s love life. “It was like napalm, sexual napalm. Did you ever say, ‘I want to quit my life and just fucking snort you? If you charged me $10,000 to fuck you, I would start selling all my shit just to keep fucking you.’” 

In the same interview, he spoke about dating Aniston, calling her the “most communicative, sweetest, kindest person.” He also denied that the song “Heartbreak Warfare” is about her. 

Taylor Swift dated Mayer when she was just 19, and famously penned a song about him called “Dear John.” It included lines like “Don’t you think 19 is too young to be played by your dark twisted games?” and “Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with? The girl in the dress cried the whole way home. I should’ve known.” 

Maybe he’ll have better luck with Cohen as his wingman (and staying away from answering interview questions about his exes).

Just A Reminder Of What Katy Perry Looked Like In Her Pre-‘Idol’ Days

Katy Perry sure has changed since 2002. 

Before we knew her as queen of thecandy-colored hair and wearer of whipped cream bras, the “American Idol” judge was a brunette Zooey Deschanel doppelgänger singing Christian rock music. In 2001 she released her debut album, “Katy Hudson,” but it wasn’t until 2008′s “One of the Boys” that she really made her mark. 

Since then, Perry, 33, has gone through a number of style changes, taking inspiration from every decade since the 1950s. As she first gained popularity, the pop star often sported corseted dresses and bodysuits, and she wasn’t afraid to play with color. Moving into the next decade, Perry often appeared in ultra-glam gowns like the red and gold number she wore to the 2010 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. 

In more recent years, Perry has kept things playful, never shying away from bold colors or plenty of sparkle. She has also flaunted virtually every hair color and length imaginable. 

The “Chained to the Rhythm” singer continues to take style risks ― as she did with a leopard-print Versace ensemble on a recent episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” ― and we’re betting she won’t stop.
